Sparano: OL 'not good enough'

The Dolphins lost to the Tampa Bay Bucs Saturday night. Not a big deal.

The Miami offensive line was terrible. That is a big deal.

The line was equally stinky at run-blocking and pass protecting, if results are the measure. The Dolphins rushed 17 times for 22 yards -- a 1.3 yard per rush average. The Dolphins did not pick up even one first down rushing. Not one.

Pass blocking? Chad Henne, working behind the first-team offensive line, was sacked three times. He was pressure on several of his 13 attempts. Right tackle Marc Colombo yielded a sack to Dakota Watson and another to Michael Bennett.

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano called the performance, "not good enough."

Sparano was very complimentary of quarterback Chad Henne. I write in my column that Henne has improved to the point he is not the biggest worry on Miami's radar right now. Amazingly.

What follows is the rest of his post-game press conference.

Henne was good. The O-line wasn't! Colombo needs to be cut. Try Murtha at RT. Bring in a FA lineman!

Be aware

ltcdolphin = multiple name poster and imposter.

Proven, verified.

F_CK!

I smashed my other computer during tonights game and this one won't let me download ADOBE!

Whud he say, whud he SAY?

Great, where the heck did I put my credit card?

The key word in this video was 'Fixable'.

Lots of fixable things. No word on when they plan on fixing them.

EXCUSES EXCUSES EXCUSES. Henne remans inconsistent no matter if this time the Oline stunk. Stop making excuses for him. This season either Henne and the Fins go deep into the playoffs(not just make it) or we trade up in next year's draft and get a franchise quarterback(whoever is in the front office).

I don't think cohesion and continuity matters in Longs case. He's good enough to plug back in next to Incognito and it's good to go.

Next to him it's Pouncey and that's a work in progress. A good work in progress though. I havent been able to DVR this game yet, but he showed marked improvement between week 1 and 2. At first glance, he didn't look bad tonight at all. Could have been better for sure, but didn't show any glaring weakness or any MAJOR mistakes.

From Pouncey on, it look like some sort of Frankenstein experiment gone awry. While I'm willing to give Carey the benefit of the doubt(like I have an alternative), he looked a day late and a dollar short tonight.

Colombo simply looks like he's in over his head. I don't know the guys history, I don't know know what happened to him. To be totally homest, I don't want to know. Just get rid of this guy quick. I harped on Carey at RT all last season. I'll stand by it. But to be fair, I'd take Carey over Colombo at RT in freaking HEARTBEAT!

Some are advocating sliding Murtha over to right tackle. Don't even think about it. He looked almost every bit as awful as Colombo this pre season and looked the same last year when pressed into duty.

Mr. Ross don't put put away the check book just yet. There's GOT to be someone better availiable smewhere!

At Hypnotoad:

Inconsistant? Henne was 10-13 with a TD. This resulted in an almost perfect QB rating. He outplayed Freeman and was a Marshall fumble from putting more points, possibly, on the board. Take the blinders off.

The problem today was the O line. Cut someone and make a statement. Preferably Columbo. There has to be a turnstile out there that will slow DEs down quicker than that Dallas reject.

Hypno...respectfully, what game were YOU watching? Henne played as good as one could, considering the lack of support.
No, unlike Eli (sarcasm) Chad is NOT top 5, but neither was Dilfer, and several others who kept their teams in games and won a SB.

I'm NOT a huge Henne supporter...yet, but if he's MY QB, then I'm behind him 100%.

We need to get the O-Line in one piece, and play with more discipline.
Because of the shortened practice time (including no 2 a days) I have to think this 3rd game may not be quite as indicative of things as would be in a normal pre-season. At least that what I hope.

This season either Henne and the Fins go deep into the playoffs(not just make it) or we trade up in next year's draft and get a franchise quarterback(whoever is in the front office).

Posted by: Hypnotoad | August 28, 2011 at 12:40 AM

You want to draft whoever is in the front office?

Wow, I think you just set a record for.......well.....you know.

Henne will be 26 this season, how about we just draft a QB in the first round regardless of how Henne does this year?

I'm glad you said franchise QB though, because I'm sure had you not specified, Ireland would have just went after an average one.

What Hypnotoad said Ya'll. If we don't win the Super Bowl go get us one of then there FRANCHISE Quarterbacks!!!!

U cant fix penalities....but u cant fix two fat slobs that cant move well or blk anybody. Keeping Carey and moving him to RG was a mistake. what does Saparno think that moving him to Gaurd means that he no longer has to blk? The guy sucks and should have been cut. Signing Columbo another mistake. Call me crazy but I think that Nate Garner should be given a start at right tackle....He cant do and worst than Carey or Columbo

Henne was good tonight not great but good, their is something about Henne i just can't trust he has a arm like a cannon but something is missing, he isn't mobile and doesn't seem to have good peripheral vision maybe it's me but something is wrong with the guy.

JAKE LONG BACK, CONSISTENCY, AND COHESION IS ALL THIS OLINE NEEDS. MAYBE POSSIBLY REPLACING COLUMBO TOO.

BAD 1ST GAME, REALLY GOOD 2ND GAME, BAD 3RD GAME. THAT INDICATES WE NEED LONG BACK AND CONSISTENCY. STILL, GETTING LONG BACK THERE ALSO HAS TO BE COHESION TO BE THE FOUNDATION OF THAT MUCH ANTICIPATED CONSISTENCY.

IT'S B!TCHING ALL OF THE TIME FOR MOST CHICKEN LITTLE THE SKY IS FALLING FANS!

BLINDREF,

GREAT SCREEN NAME. IT FITS. HENNE HAD A 109 QB RATING AND ALL 3 INCOMPLETIONS WERE CATCHABLE DROP BALLS.

WASNT GOOD, HE WAS EXTREMELY GOOD. eXSPECIALLY IN THE FACE OF PLAYING BEHIND A VERY POOR PERFORMANCE BEHIND HIS OLINE. HAD THE OLINE NOT PLAYED SO POORLY HENNE'S PERFORMANCE TONIGHT COULD HAVE EASILY GONE FROM VERY GOOD TO GREAT!

GET SOME NEW GLASSES BLINDREF!

DB,

All the BS aside, all the back and forths aside, I LOVE your enthusiasm and passion as a Phins Fan!

The say Fan is short for Fanatic, I say you're damn straight!

ValHalla!!!!

ODIN,

I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED MY DOLPHINS WITH UNBRIDALED PASSION. ITS SICKENING TO ME TO WATCH WANNABE FANS CRITICISE WHEN THEY HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THE HELL THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT MOST TIMES. SOME CRY FOR THE SAKE OF CRYING. SOME ARE IDIOTS NO MATTER WHAT TEAM THEY WOULD HAVE DECIDED TO ROOT FOR.

I BEGINNING TO THINK MANY OF THEM ARE JUST DISGRUNTLED JETFANS KICKED FROM THE ROOST BY SMARTER JETFANS. NOT SAYING THAT THERE'S A SUCH THING AS A SMART JETFAN!!!!!!!! LOL...

...I haven't seen the game, just read the box scores and some comments here. Looks as if the line was poo-poo tonight. It is very encouraging to see that Henne played well. But can somebody tell me why we abandoned the run? I see that we only ran it about 20 times?

I get it that the line was bad. But if we fall in love, or are forced to pass it 40 times a game..We are screwed. This isn't because Henne hasn't proven to be capable to do this. It's because 90 percent of all NFL quarterbacks that throw it that many times a game end up on the losing side. We must find a way to establish the run, or it is going to be a long season...Good job C. Henne, way to get better each week.

I have not been a Henne supporter to say the least but he has shown some poise and pizzazz the last two games. By no means am I jumping up and down in my poodle skirt waving my pom-poms like a lot of the little girls here, but I have to give credit where it's due. In the last two games the guy has done a better than respectable job.

BM and Bush (may he PLEASE stay healthy) have been close to outstanding, Daboll has an offense that actually looks fun (then again what wouldn't compared to what we've had?) and the D (esp. Burnett - wow what a different player from Crowder!) is going to be good.

I really hope they give Livas a roster spot. I just have visions of Mark Duper (okay, so he's a return guy but he's exciting and I'm rooting for him).

Colombo? Oops. Is Max Starks even halfway healthy? 'Cause Max in a hospital bed is better than this sieve.

143.8 qb rating I would say his best game ever (even though this is a preseason game) hope it continues to regular season

ODIN,

ALSO THERE'S NOTHING WORSE WHEN YOUR TEAM IS LOSING THAN TO HAVE A BUNCH OF LOSER MINUTE MAID FANS TO BOOT.

THERE'S A SUCH THING AS A FAN CLUB AND THERE'S THE CHICKEN LITTLE CLUB. THE CHICKEN LITTLE CLUB ARENT REAL FANS AT ALL. AFTER IT WAS FINALLY PROVEN THE SKY REALLY ISNT FALLING, SOME CAME HERE TO POSE AS FANS.

LITTLE DO THESE CHICKENS KNOW HOW EASILY THEY ARE TO SPOT. NO MATTER THE EVENT, THE SKY IS ALWAYS FALLING! LOL...

Darryl,

It wasn't so much that we abandoned the run as it was they took it away from us.

Wait till you see it. NFL Channel @ 11:00pm. You'll be amazed that Henne held his poise and performed. the O-line wasn't terrible, it was horrendous.

Daboll gets a lot of credit from me, because he rolled with the punches and called an excellent game.

Neither Jones nor Clemons distinguished themselves and Marlon Moore's good showing makes the WR question even tougher.

I am just tired of this Carey Guy!!!Im sorry. The guy is fat and cant move. Ive been hating Carey for yrs this didn't just start.

Columbo just got here so its amazing how fast he got on the fans unpopular list. Let Nate Garner get a try with the 1st team. Cut Carey and bring another gaurd.

..Thanks Odin..That bad eh? I wonder(I'm sure Sparano is as well) what the right formula is.
It sounds like Columbo was off the chart poor. True?

tHESE CLOWN ARE TOO PROUD TO SHOW EGG ON THERE FACE.
Columbo was cut he allowed a ton of sacks
But Tony and jeff say......
Yo you know deez guy ya know he is a goodfella ya know, Bill paaaaarcells vouched and we suck his well you know whats ya know.
The tuna drafted this guy yeeeeerz agoo ya know , just ask
Phillp Merling
Jake Grove
Joe Fat Burger
Justin Smiley
Gibril Wilson
Joe Dat Guy Nalbone from new joezzzzyyyy
and dat fellla boaaaabeee caaapentaaa , first rd and re pick up ya know.
Why make a mistake twice , we kickin tires guido !!!!

DarrylD we ran for 22 yds, what can I say? I'm a nobody!

DarrylD, Colombo is like a screen door on a submarine!

Darryl D

For example, in the first half we had 9 rushes for -3 yards. Pretty dismal.

Henne looked better yes, but still no pocket presence at all, took a really hard sack because he couldn't feel the rush. He is getting rid of the ball quicker and scanning the field better.

I'm worried about Marshall. He makes great plays and terrible plays. After a catch and run he had the ball stripped away. He is a big guy, needs to protect the ball and not have mosquitos slap it away from him.

Something still doesn't feel right in the secondary. They are not closing in and tackling.

Tony for two weeks now is saying things are fixable. He sounds like the captain of the titanic saying that.

Its fine to be a fan, but some here are snorting angel dust. Magnifying the improvements out of proportion while ignoring the problems. I'm not confident this team will have a winning season.

Guys in the path of Irene, forget the media hype! It's a wet fart! Yes, cover your windows, prepare for loss of power

DB,

I don't know what all the hubbub was earlier so I can't comment.

I do know what you mean about the straigt up ignorant biased crap. Like the guy earlier saying Henne has been inconsistent.

So far He's 29 of 45 for 471 yards. 2 Td's and 2 int's completing 64.4% of his passes. That in about a game and a half of play.

Also, guys continously cutting on the FO. They haven't hit on all their moves, but what FO does. I can give you an example from another poster.

Phillp Merling-Though he offers good depth and is anything but a bust, I'll give you Wake!

Jake Grove-Dansby

Joe Fat Burger-Burnett

Justin Smiley-Marshall

Gibril Wilson-Bush

That's not even mentioning guys like Davis, Smith, Long, Misi and even bringing bac JT.

DB, I know it's not always easy, but sometimes it's just best to ignore the ignorance.

Bush = Bust
Thomas = Bust

Bush is best catching screen passes, he sucks as a running back. Thomas looked even more hesitant this week. We have no running game. The FO F'd up with this big time.

DB,

Don't look now, but here's anotheexample of extremely biased IGNORANCE. This dumba ss take the cake tonight.

Henne looked better yes, but still no pocket presence at all, took a really hard sack because he couldn't feel the rush.

I'm sure this had nothng to do with Murtha and Colombo BOTH letting their guy run run free, RIGHT?

DB, this is he kind of retarded shyt that pisses me off. There's nothing I can do o help the mentally challenged, so sometimes you just havr to laugh.

Fixable-ROTFLMAO, right at you!

I'm sure this had nothng to do with Murtha and Colombo BOTH letting their guy run run free, RIGHT?

Yeah man. I guess Henne needs another 4 years to learn how to escape the rush or throw the ball away. Gimme a break.

..I'm not sure if you guys are talking about the first sack? I just watched it. Sorry, no way that was Hennes fault. The pocket colapsed right on top of him. It was like crushing a can underneath your foot. That is the only highlight..Touchdown...sweet. I was going to say that is the first highlight from the NFL Network around the league program.

Nice pass from Henne...1 on 1 matchup, perfect placement, great run after catch. That is Marshalls game..He may be the best run after the catch reciever in the league..seriously. I know he fumbles later in the game, after a nice catch and run. Go look at his Denver highlights...YAC baby.

Odin, both Murtha and Colombo have tremendous issues!

Our o-line is an example of the old saying, "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link".

Columbo is weaker than a rusty paper-clip.

Sadly, we hire many very good players, only to sabotage the entire effort by picking up one too many rejects...

Colombo is another example.

Sparano looks like a captain ready to go down with the ship. He is in over his head. He is not the guy to lead this team anywhere. They made some great acquisitions and some terrible ones. This FO does not have the experience to pull it all together.

Well that or hey, maybe he could learn to block for hiomself too? Ya Think? That would be alrighty dighty-Duh?

He's had these two bozo's not blocking for him all pre season. I mean everybody else here seem to realize how terrible the tackles have played so far, um, everybody but YOU-Ha ha!

Anyways, with these sieves, Henne has went
29 of 45 for 471 yards. 2 Td's and 2 int's completing 64.4% of his passes. So I don't know if he's escaping the rush or what, but it's obvious he's doing something rigt.

So MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, YOU should give ME a break-Duh!

In all my years of following professional sports, I've never seen such an endless stream of excuses for a single player.

Websters Dictionary: Infinity
1. A number with no limits
2. The amount of excuses Fin Fans make for Henne

If he does well in real games, ok, I'll eat it. I'm tired of hearing Sparano talk about whats fixable though. Fix it already.

The dolphins should have won tonight, they did not

As much a you might have a point there, your initial statement was that Henne got sacked because he has no pocket awarness. A play in which EVERYONE but you could see the pocket completely collapsed on him.

As far as excuses go, it sounds like your making excuses to justify your obvious fallacies.

For now I'm just going to go with what actually happened THIS YEAR and hope for the best.

Hope you and webster have a lot of fun tonight.

Henne: 29 of 45 for 471 yards. 2 Td's and 2 int's completing 64.4% of his passes.

AwwwRiiiight Miami!

PS: Thanks for stopping by, Goodnight :P

odin, I hear ya.

Last week the fins barely got into endzone on fouth and goal. Good thing Hilliard can jump ten feet in the air, because there weren't no hole to run through that down either.

I feel sad for Henne this year. He has the potential to be good. But the o-line is again, our downfall.

WHEN YOU'RE STUPID AND HAVE NO PLAN B!TCHING WILL ALWAYS BE THE PLAN!!!!!!!!!!! LOL....

Did Hilliard play tonight, no! That concerns me, he is better than Polite and Thomas!

DEAR SANTA DOLPHIN,

CAN YOU PLEASE PUT SMART FANS INTO THE DOLPHIN STOCKING STOCKING THIS YEAR.

LOVE YA SANTA! :)

HILLIARDS SO GOOD ZERO TEAMS HAVE INQUIRED ABOUT HIM IN A TRADE. EVERYBODY CANT BE WRONG. JUST DOLPHIN FANS!!!!!

SUH IS A BEAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Colombo needs to go. And I'll say it..it hurts me but I'll say it...Henne looked decent the last two games...Colombo is a oaf, he's mom's leftover meatloaf that's been sitting on the counter for 8 days straight

Also..please stop saying how good Lex is...I haven't seen shyit that tells me he's worth a roster spot

I'm worried about Thomas...did we waste a move up and pick in the draft...or is the Colombo oaf not cutting it...maybe a combo of the two...

Santa,

Can you lend us a elf to play RT in place of Columbo?

The elf would prolly play better than the Dallas Reject!

Ok, we all agree Colombo has to go!

For the first time ever I liked Hennes game ! I can't believe I'm typing this. He has impressed me the past few games

DyingB, you're against Hilliard? He can outplay Thomas and Polite, sorry, I disagree with you on this one! Do I think there are better RBs out there

Got cut off, I'm tired enough BS, goodnight all!

Why can't Miami create an ol?

There are a lot of changes with Hennes game this year. Different, more aggressive scheme seems to have given him confidence. Also it seems he has lost weight and gotten into better shape. He's playing much livelier in the pocket and is always on his toes looking to make a play. No longer looks robotic!

Guy's did anyone catch the Highlights of The Pats-Lions game????, Brady pressured unrelentlessly, Thats how you Rattle him... Lions 34 Pats 10......They can be beat..
