Sparano: QB battle not really a battle right now

Note to everyone who is now considering Matt Moore a legitimate competitor for the Dolphins starting quarterback job:

Stop it. Just stop.

At least for now.

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano addressed the possibility today when he said he wouldn't say there is a quarterback battle right now because while Chad Henne had some issues during Friday's preseason game at Atlanta and Moore brought the team back from a deficit to help Miami win, 28-23, much has to happen for this to become a legitimate competition.

"I mean I wouldn’t say there is a battle right at this second," Sparano said. "To me it takes more than a few outings, couple practices any of those things.  But I mean I thought Matt did some good things.  I mean, on the surface it’s going to look like Matt did way more good things than Chad maybe, I guess to your eye but there was enough things in there to Matt’s 36 plays I believe it was that needed to be corrected as well.  He did some good things, that’s the Matt I know.  Matt can move the football team pretty well.  He’s got a little bit of savvy to him and he can move the team, step up in the pocket and make those kind of throws.  He did a nice job last night."

In other words, Henne has to seriously struggle while Moore has to seriously play sharp the final three preseason games for the coach to consider this an issue.

And so that is not where we are right now. Remember, we're talking about snapshots in time here. Today, this is not an issue. Much stuff has to change for it to become an issue.

Henne can close the door on the issue by simply playing consistently well the next two games.

But as I wrote in my column for today's newspaper, Henne was both good and bad versus the Falcons. And consistently inconsistent is not unusual for Miami's quarterback. He finished 4 of 8 for 77 yards with one TD and two interceptions. Playing against both Atlanta's starters and second-team players, Henne posted a 83.9 rating.

Moore, playing strictly against backups and guys that will not be employed by the Falcons in a month, completed 11 of 18 passes for 123 yards, with two TDs and one interception.

That's a good but not perfect outing. It's an outing that suggests Moore is locking in on Miami's backup QB job. It is not a performance that says, 'I'm better than the starter."

At least not right now.

Im not 100% sold on Henne as of yet. But so many are against him its become a heck of a lot more fun being on the opposite side of that camp. LOL....

I'm anxious to see if Dabol can rise to 31 from the 32 ranked OC last year.

Bobby,

It was just exciting to me to see this offense make some big plays and chunk yardage plays. Just the first preseason game we probably equaled all of the big plays and chunk yardage plays we had all of last season! LOL...

DB, and a punt return for a TD!! I honestly don't remember the last one we had. Was it Teddy (where is he today) Ginn??

Pessimists say what you want about Daboll but consider this. Here's proof DaBoll did a fine job developing Colt McCoy last season

I know its onlyb preseason but the Browns beat defending SB champ Green Bay 27-17 Fri night. Colt McCoy was 9-10 135yds 1 TD with a 15yd per completed pass average. Obviously DaBoll did something right in Cleveland but he wont get credit for it.

Just maybe McCoy > Henne

Bobby,

Livas was pretty exciting to watch. At least 3 other returns Fri night had he not been tripped up at the end he could have took those the house too. Kept watching this and thinking it was just a matter of time. Then BAMMMM! He did it. LOL...

One otherthing That Bothers me about Mr.(Hoolywood) Ross is the 1st 1 pm game at home ocurrs Oct 23rd..., I guess Mr. Rosses Idea of "Fan Friendly" Is Glitz and D-list Celebs,At 4pm and night games in sept and Oct. My Idea along with 90% of other fin fans is watching teams welt and suffer at 3:15pm(In the 4th Qtr) in Sept when the temp is 96 and humidity is 100%..., Then again what do I know about Dolphin history..

Hard to say someone did something right when finishing at the bottom of a pack of 32.

My concern is he only has one year experience as an OC, and was fired after his first year. We went from a guy 100 years behind the times to a guy still learning how to stand on two feet.

Bobby,

Ginn never took a punt to the house. He was awful fielding punts in training camp that's why Bess had the duty even when Ginn was here. Ginn only did k/o's.

DB, definitely, all we can do now is hope the injury bug doesn't bite us and some things go right this year, especially at home.

Just Sayin,

Who the hell else wanted to come here and take the oc job? Just sayin! LOL...

Bobby,

I just have a strange feeling we're going to have a buzz saw waiting for Belichik when he comes here on Sept 19. Plus we have Brady's old nemisis and kryptonite, Jason taylor back.

The Brady-Taylor reunion should be just like old times! LOL....

"I'll take a win and a 19.2 yd completion average from my starting qb all day long. The 1st pick was Fasano's fault. The 2nd both Bess and Henne were at fault. Bess ran the wrong route and Henne shouldnt have thrown the ball."

You can't possibly be that obtuse, can you?

1. 25% of Henne's passes were interceptions. Twenty-five percent, deushnozzle. If you'll "take that", you'll also take a shytload of losses this year. Don't forget: Henne struggled with accuracy on the pass (to Fasano) that your average high-schooler could complete with ease.

2. The team wasn't winning when Henne left the game. In fact the Dolphins were LOSING. Guess you'll take that from your starting QB too.

I'm starting to think you're a Herald plant to keep discussions going on the blog via your asinine takes.

Actually Im thinking JT may just be the wilcard we need playing against Brady and the Pats. If JT doesnt have much left in the tank I hope its all used on just the 2 Pat-Brady games.

If JT helps get even a split against the Pats this year our money was well worth the show! LOL...

Breed, I Hope the have that "Buzz saw " Ready a week before that, The Pats game is Sept 12...

Seminole Sam,

Do the Looney Tunes cartoon writers know that you have changed your 1st name and escaped the script? Tell Bugs Bunny we said hello, Yosemite Sam! LOL...

DB, Ginn took one to the house Nov 2007 against the Eagles. 4 years ago!! That may have been are last one

Cuban,

That was a mistype. Meant Sept 12th.

Sammy, Easy with the personal insults..(Some of are adults)...

Assuming Henne makes 32 attempts per game in the regular season and has the same interception ratio he had against Atlanta, he would be on pace to get 128 (one hundred and twenty-eight) interceptions this year.

Dying Breed will take that as long as Henne averages 19.2 yards per completion. LMAO!!

What an imbecilic tool!!

We are cleaning house here in Miami. About time.

Bobby,

I dont remember Ginn ever scoring on a punt return. You could be right but I just dont remember it. LOL...

Yosemite Sam,

Dying Breed, watched it on You Tube, I know, hard to believe

"Some of us", Sorry for the typo....

Bobby,

Every now and then I like playing with the idiots. Because I know they have zero chance to win. Its like eating baby food with a full set of choppers! LOL...

Nice try, donut brain. All the more reason why you look like a complete and utter cretin when you crow about Henne's 19.2 completion average in the face of such an ATROCIOUS outing. LMAO!!

I am so happy that my extrapolation of his numbers has allowed you to see the folly and sheer absurdity of your thinking. No charge, DB.

Truly, truly bizarre analysis by you...19.2% completion average...LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As hard as I try to take an optimistic view, the glaring thing I can't get over is that Henne seems to have no chemistry with any of his recievers. Not even his favorite target Bess. His throw to a wide open Bess was way off, I was amazed Bess caught it.

Accuracy is something you either have or have not by the time you enter the NFL. Henne is not accurate frequently enough. Has no feel for the game, no chemistry with anyone. I sincererly get the feeling ALL the recievers are totally frustrated with him and deep down would prefer another QB.

ALoco,

Gang of Four??

I Remember that guy odinseye from that night when aloco made him look like gay man riding on a gay boat .

YES SEMINOLE, YOU AREE PART OF THE GANG OF FOUR, THETY WERE THE ONES THAT TERRORIZED THE CHINA PEOPLE IN THE 70s.MANNY WERE PUT TO DEATH BY THEM.

I take it you're imopressed by Henne's 19.2 ypc in the face of a 2:1 completion to interception ratio too? If so, YOU"RE obviously the Jets troll.

Please tell me, the know it all, why that 19.2 number is worth "taking" given Henne's overall performance.

TO BE OR NOY YO BE............................ DB JUST COMPLETED THE CHANGING OF HIS SKIN AND RIDING THE HENNE WAGON ./...../..../....

Aloco,

LMAO!! I terrorize nobody, sir!

THE GANG OF FOUR WERE HEADED BY MAO'S WIFE AKA DB .......

WE SHOULS WELCOM S.SAM ...HE WRITES HIS VIEWS AND ANY ONE CAN DO THE SAME ....HE HAS EVERY RIGHT TO SAY AND DEBATE WITH US ON ANY TOPIC ......................

WLECOME SIR ...............

WE SHOULD

Really if you take away the long pass to a wide open Hartline, that one play against a broken second string secondary, there is really nothing to admire about Hennes performance.

Henne will not get any better. I don't think he makes it past the bye week.

WHO YOU WOULD RATHER READ;;;;;;

1- OSCAR .....
2-S.SAM ...
KRIS.....

I PICK S.SM ...HE'S MORE FUN TO READ SOME THING DIFFERENT ,NOT THE SAME CRAP FROM OSCAR KRIS .......

Careful, oswald. You will be labeled a troll!

Thanks, A.Loco.

I'm trying to tone it down. I just get a little nuts when the subject comes to Henne. Yes, by all means, let's hope he turns into a better QB, but we can't just turn a blind eye to his performances and gloss over his development. If he turns the corner (and he won't), I'll be the first to say (repeatedly) that I was wrong about him.

That is all.

Sam

People who call me a troll are suffering from paranoia and its my cue to not respond to them.

S.SMA/OSWALD............ AGREE WITH POSTS @ 11;14 AND 11;16 .......

THE OTHER THING IS DB,BOBBYD12 AND KRIS ALL THINK THEY R THE SOUL OF THIS BLOG....I SAY LET EVERY ONE IN AND ENJOY THE DEBATE ////////

I was planning on giving Henne until the bye week before labeling him useless. Now I will give him until the end of the first quarter the next game. We are going against lowly Carolina. If he can't IMPRESS, then no hope.

Impress doesn't mean completing a pass. It means shredding them.

Yes Aloco. The blog is a debate, not a war. If everyone agreed it would be really boring.

AGREE OSWALD,OR THE DB BREED WANTS ALL BLOGGERS TO FOLLOW HIM LIKE DONKEYS .

henne had a good game friday. he just needs us to get behind him and let him know he's our guy. if you guys can do better, maybe you should put on a uniform and give it a shot?

I'm noticing that.

To all those posting positively, I salute you.

To those biatches on the PMS wagon, go get a dry rag and clean up your fan-act...

Go Fins!

I was just reading the article in the Sports section regarding Sparano`s comments after the game and scrolled thru the posts commenting on the article and noticed they were dedating if Ross really cared about fielding a winner or was only looking to make money while selling the ENTERTAINMENT experience with his merry band of D list celebs. I`ve heard and read were some really believe there may be some validity to it and have a couple of things I`d like to say about it.

Per the new CBA which took affect on August 4th all TV revenue split between all 32 teams had to be used to cover 90% of the Salary Cap. In other words of the 124.5 Million cap set for the 2011 Season teams can only keep roughly 12.45 Million off the Salary Books. The only revenue that NFL owners keep out right and pocket is what they generate from their Stadiums, in other words it doesn`t suit Ross in the least if they perennially loose at home because he will find himself in the dilema he had at the end of last season when in our last two home games (Cleveland, Detroit) he avareged 27,000 fans in his 82,500 seat stadium.

You can call Ross a dumb or green horn owner if you like but not cheap, he made Dansby one of the highest paid LB`s in the game and overpaid in my estimation. Today B.Marshall IS the highest paid WR in Football at a base of 10.2 Million a season. He was getting ready to make Jim Harbaugh the highest paid coach in the game with some estimates putting it at over 6 Million per, it`s crazy to think with his inpocket revenue tide to the Stadium and the league rule about TV dollars that it would be in his best interest to cut some corners in order to pocket 12.5 Million which is all he can keep from TV dollars while sacrificing the product on the field hurting stadium revenue. I suggest some get the facts straight on that issue and quit making such outragous claims!!

I AM HAPPY TO SEE THE HONORABLE ,CUBAN MENACE BACK AND WEEL.MAY GOD BLEES HIM AND ALL HIS FAMILY .

GulfDolphin

If you hate freedom of speech so much go move to Saudi Arabia.

Coming on the blog with nothing relevant to say but only to insult others serves no valid purpose.

I feel sorry for your neighbors.

you tell them gulfdolphin!!

henne either is going to get good in a dolphins uniform or he'll get good in somebody else's uniform. i vote for him getting good as a dolphin. just be patient! if you complainers were true fans, you'd see it that way too.

FIN4LIFE...GOOD POST BUT YOU WASTED YOU TIME AND ENERGY ..OF COURSE WANTS TO MAKE MONEY .HE DID/T BUY THE TEAM TO MAKE YOU ALL FANS HAPPY WHILE JE LOSES MONEY .................

Folks,

Ross bought the team as an investment just like Huizenga did. Mr. H made 800% profit on his investment fielding a losing team. Ross will sell the team in 5 years for a healthy profit too, win or lose.

That's reality.

YOUR TIME...........OF COURSE ROSS WANTS TO MAKE MONEY ........WHILE HE LOSES MONEY ......SORRY FOR THE TYPO...
