Chad Henne still a loooong way to go

The line between a really good NFL quarterback and a JAG (Just A Guy) is so thin you often cannot see it with your own eyes.

Think about that.

That line has to be studied. It has to be viewed on tape. You have to capture what happens in a millisecond and slow it down to understand it.

That is my intention here.

You know I've been hard on Chad Henne for failing to become a good quarterback at the end of last season after 27 NFL starts. But I assume you also are aware it is not personal. When he plays well, I tell you. When he plays poorly, I tell you. Unfortunately for him and Dolphins fans, the guy has more often played poorly than well. And so much of what I've written about Henne has been critical.

The truth, however, is the truth. It is a great sword and a mighty shield.

Well, the last two weeks you've read and heard from me that Henne has improved. He played much better against Carolina than he did in the preseason opener against Atlanta. Did he play great? No. He played well enough.

Then last week against Tampa Bay, Henne played better than he did the week before. I would tell you he played good against Tampa Bay in completing 10 of 13 passes for 175 yards and one TD. It was more progress.

But did Henne play great?

His rating (143.9) and completion percentage (76.9) suggest he was great. The pictures say otherwise.

To rise to the level of great, you see, a quarterback needs to maximize his opportunities. And at no time this preseason has Henne done that with consistency. He's missed open receivers on a handful of occasions. And he's missed almost certain touchdowns on at least three plays that I can recollect off the top of my head.

Against the Bucs he had one one play -- on third-and-goal from the Tampa Bay 4 -- where he missed two open receivers for a TD. Yes, he missed two receivers open for a TD. On the same play.

Here is the first picture:

Henne throw1

As you see, Henne has time to throw. The Dolphins are in maximum protection with all five offensive linemen working on Henne's behalf as while tight end Anthony Fasano and running back Reggie Bush also are protecting. That's seven guys blocking for Henne against four rushers.

Henne has time.

And he has Davone Bess open in the end zone. Henne knows this because, as the picture above clearly shows, Henne is looking directly at Bess!

But the Miami quarterback doesn't pull the trigger. He misses the opportunity. He never even attempts the TD throw.

The next picture will show that Henne didn't just miss Bess.

Henne throw2

As you see here, Henne has given up on throwing to Bess, even though he is still open. And he has given up on the pass play altogether. That means he is now missing the fact Brian Hartline has come wide open in the back corner of the end zone. What makes this frustrating is that Henne knows he has maximum protection and the pocket (indicated by the circle) is clean.

Henne has time. You can see that only one second has ticked off the play clock.

Yet Henne puts his head down -- ignoring a still open Bess and a now open Hartline -- and scrambles instead. He gains 1 yard on the scramble. The Dolphins' chance at a TD is wasted even though the protection is good and receivers are open in the end zone.

Everyone does their job except Henne.

So Miami kicks a 21-yard field goal instead.

Does this make Henne a bad QB? No. But it means he has miles to go before he's a good quarterback. You see, this was only a preseason game. It didn't count. The Dolphins lost this one 17-13 and no one cares. But what if this missed opportunity had happened in a real game. We just watched four points Miami should have had not get scored because Henne didn't pull the trigger.

Four points, a TD instead of a field goal, is often the difference between victory and defeat in today's NFL.

And this is just one play. He had Hartline open for a TD at the goal line against Carolina but threw a checkdown to Daniel Thomas instead. He had Brandon Marshall open -- as in nobody was covering him -- open for another TD against Carolina, but threw an incompletion to Hartline instead.

I, along with everyone else, still spoke of those performances against Carolina and Tampa Bay as outings where Henne improved from a year ago. And, to his credit, he has improved.

But he's got a long way to go yet.

Long way.

Props to Manny Suarez for e-mailing me the photos.

odin,

During games the live threads at that finsnation site are alot more fun because people post what they see, no punches pulled and they know their football a HARDCORE site for the HARDCORE FAN (us) aside from the fact they can get really colorful as you can tell. The Fri. afternoon pow wow they have over there is pretty cool as well, you`d enjoy. I got turned on to the site by one of the regulars the group over there is small but faithful to that site.

This here is a politically correct blog. We will start bible study before game day blogs.

Challenge me Corn holers..........Not saying Henne is gonna be the next marino. but the kid is equal to or better than. at least five current hall of famers, and some future locks.

Slurp it beeeeetches.

My bad, I should say with equal amounts of starts thus far. Sometimes I feel like Carl Lewis at the Special Olympics with some of you flotsamic r-bags.

I try my best to keep an open mind. But every time I take a huge dump Henne comes to mind.

oderballsack and fin4lick a sack,

Everytime I come on here I gotta read the dear John etters you to queers send back and forth, you 2 homos read like a couple of butch queens out troll cruising for action, baaaaa haaaaa haaaaa ! I get it this hole blog reads of cruising queens and a ss bandits. Why don`t all of you get on your knees and get ready to lick some green pole beatches !

Of course if he did what people are saying and it was pick off, then they would be saying why did he do that, he should have kept the ball and run or throw it away. Yes, the no nothing are out tonight, they should be asking what Walter Camp would say about this QB. Bill

Opening night is nigh and I grow hard. My crotchless chaps makes it easier for it to breathe. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.

It's going to take two pairs of socks to clean that up!

Shaggy this corn and hole you speak of is intriguing. Shall we use your corn and my hole?

Why don`t all of you get on your knees and get ready to lick some green pole beatches !

Tom = Checker = Just the facts,

I'm a total idiot degenerate! I only know three things in life.

1. Music

2. My Miami Dolphins

3. How to have a good time.

Since you can't jam and you know nothing about the Phins, we ain't having a good time, if you know what I mean!

So please, just take your homoerotic bullshyt and shove it up yo a ss!

Judging from your last post, I'm sure you enjoy shoving things up yo Bunga!

Buh Bye Now!!!!

Everytime I come on here I gotta read

Everytime huh? Never seen your name before, Dooh!

**Drunk Troll Alert**

Busted AGAIN ;)

U

MAD?

Sober up and try again.

PS: Actually I was just getting rid of the Tony on my sign in, but I'm sure YOU understand-lol!

Buh Bye Now!!!!

What will happen to Pat Devlin? They try to sneak him into the practice Squad he will be poached. Hmm..

Now I lay me down to sleep

I pray for the 53 we keep

If Jeffy trades before I wake

I pray it's Michael Oher we take

AwwwwwwwwwwRiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight MIAMI!!!!

He didn't have a clear line of site to see Best. It would have been nice to slide forward to buy a second to see Hartline al lah Marino, but it didn't happen. He looked sharp considering the pressure ha faced all night. Anybody notice when Brady excells he has all day, but when Detroit got after him he looked bad the other night. The bigger problem is with max protection against a 4 man rush there was still pressure. And no running game all night. O line looks to be a problem. Hopefully Long's return gives a big boost.

BoulderFinFan... Agreed!!! Thomas has continually gained a yard this pre-season with no pocket.

Let's stop bashing and scrutanizing the guy for sucking up until now. I'm still skeptical of Henne, but he's at least stepped up to be the leader of the offense this year.

What Armando should be breaking down, is Henne's 2 minute drill/hurry-up offense. It's non-existant, and I'd join the bashing then!!!

bet it would work both of you into a HOT state of man loving mind so you can cruise Greenwich Village together and get your butch man love on already, degenerate bastards!!!

Posted by: fin4life | August 31, 2011 at 12:56 AM

HEY! Easy there, don't confuse us degenerate bastards with those sick f u c ks-LOL!

Actually Thomas has played pretty good all things considered.

When the o-line got bull dozered he really had no chance.

Despite this, he's had some nice runs and nice pass receptions.

Don't but into the jaded crap you read here. Oh yeah, and don't check any still photos, CHECK THE FILM!

Thomas wth Bush will be awesome when and IF they fix the line.

odin @1:05,

LOL!

NFL Top 10 Right Tackles

April 4, 2010 by Andy Benoit

Friendly Disclaimer: The following list is influenced largely — but not strictly — by film study of all 32 teams from the 2009 season. It is not a prediction for the 2010 season, though the future isn’t utterly ignored.Vague enough for you? Top 10 lists somehow tend to be. That’s why most of you will have no trouble finding ways to gripe over what you’re about to read.

10. David Stewart, Tennessee Titans

Classic veteran RT: gritty, sloppy but somehow reliable.

9. Marc Colombo, Dallas Cowboys

See David Stewart.

Huh? I found this on NFL Toucdown dot com........

They must have studied the film SpOrano had.

INTERESTING READ FROM NFL NET. RIGHT UP TILL THE END WITH DEREUS TALKING SATAN.

If the season started today, and your only guide to which quarterback you would take was based on preseason play, who ya got: Michael Vick, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Matthew Stafford or Drew Brees?

It’s hard to pull off a blind sample like that, but my co-host Bucky Brooks and I let you know who is balling right now and who could have his team in play once the postseason comes around on the most recent edition of the Cover Two Podcast.

So who ya got?

Probably not Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne, right? Well, say what you want, but Henne has looked like a totally different quarterback the past two preseason games and Miami Herald columnist Armando Salguero explains why. Salguero also lets it rip on whether he’s buying into Henne and how much of a difference Reggie Bush makes.

We all believe Miami’s defense is going to be really good, but not because it has the top cornerback tandem in the NFL. Sorry Vontae Davis, but we like your confidence. We also like the confidence Bills rookie defensive tackle Marcell Dareus displays during his appearance.

Darius (foot) also updates us on his health and whether he’ll be ready to go Week 1. More importantly, he keeps it real on how much joy Alabama coach Nick Saban brought to the game.

Funny how much bigger it looks when it is shaved right down to the wood. I don't want to see any pubic hair at your work stations. Still you may want to consider retaining it and making a nice Christmas craft with it. Alright Miami.

odin,

I also heard the rumblings in Baltimore about McKinney getting a shot at the LT position but doubt Oher goes anywere but back to RT for the Ravens were he excelled as a rookie. The most maddening part of that story is if he truely has dropped around 40 Pds already and looks determined to become a starter again then why dd we show no interest??

McKinney costed nothing we had the coin to pony up in our cap!! I just don`t get the laying down by the FO on some VET players worth the looksy and you can bet given his ties to Miami McKinney would have probably come here 1st for a workout, that and his agent Drew Rosenhaus must have tried to sell the Fins on this as well, I just don`t get it???????????

Although I have the website for it, I'm not going to even turn on my TV. I will hear it on the Radio. I want to go back to Old Times, even if briefly.

However you satanize him, Nick Saban is a great Coach(proven). He is just not cut out to be on the tail of all these "professional" Athletes.

Interesting oscar?

Hablo lo del radio mi socio!

Man, fin4, what kind of Spanish language is that? Didn't understand s-it.

Armando, you might consider giving Henne a break he just went 10-13, 175 yards, 1 TD, and a passer rating over 140... and he might just have a very solid year.

I also think Henne made the correct call on the play. There were three defenders all looking at the QB ready to make a break on the ball if it was thrown.

The Dolphins seem to be running a much better offensive system so far which encourages Henne to take high percentage shots down field while dumping it off to the underneath back/receiver if it's not open.

He's also surrounded by better talent like Reggie Bush who can take a five yard pass 60+ for a TD and he seems to be jellying well with his receivers all of which adds up to a higher passer rating.

The instructions said, "peel and lift". Well, I couldn't even peel off the instructions. There must be something wrong with me, or the instructions.

Yeah, some Pastores are degenarate fu-ks.

At the same Time, these Jehova's Witness women fu-k like hell. I had one...

Believe it or not, I am now making pomme frites.

Well, I guess I put Everyone to bed. Good.

I love this song, it pretty much explains all about Chad Henne. If Parcells knew how to use the internet the year Henne was drafted we could have had Drew Brees.

It is so funny how much some of yall want to hate CHad. Even when he improves, STill critisize him for not being absolutely perfect. Hell, Dan MArino wasnt ABsolutely perfect. Guess what is going to happen if HENNE does make every throw he is supposed to make? He will LEAVE Via Free Agency, because he will go where he will be wanted.
ANd he is an unrestricted free agent when this season is over. So keep bashing him! That way, after he puts up great numbers, he wont want to stay with a fanbase that does nothing but Moan and groan about him. Then, the dolphins will be in the same boat we always have been since MArino retired, looking for another QB. If Henne doesnt get better, then so what, but if he does make all the throws, I would hope he would stay, but would not blame him for going somewhere else, just hopefully not to the bills!

Even the Germans dont like chad Henne

Come regular season, Henne will not be let off the hook like he currently is by so many clueless fans. Ay que lio! La situacion esta de culian culan en Miami.

Damn. Mando gettin slayed on his own blog. I mean, you've written some horrible, reaching critiques of Chad but this is a new low. Whoever you are pleasuring to keep your job is gonna want some extra service. Start stretching.

two things that will have the most significant effect on the dolpins success this year:

1. play of the offensive line

2. creating turnovers

a good running game does two things for a team. it makes the passing game better and it wears down defenses. if the line can be solid "enough" at run blocking and create opportunities for bush and thomas it will go a long way in helping this team create success on offense. henne has shown some great poise during the preseason when under pressure so it is imperative the line plays great in both the run game and the passing game.

2. we all know what happened last year with db's dropping int's all over the field. they must have been in competition with the receivers to see who could drop the most balls. however, there are signs they are trying to improve. guys on defense are spending time on the "jugs" machine catching balls after practice. hopefully this helps. if the defense can create turnovers, whether it be int's or fumbles, and end up on the positive side of things this year instead of minus 9 like las year this team has a sure shot at playoffs in 2011.

these are two areas to watch this year and, i think, will have the most impact on how successful this team will be. if the fins can come up with a solution in both areas everything else should fall into place.jmho.

Thanks for reminding us that we should have got another QB in here like Orton, it is a new year maybe he will be good this year, we know what will happen if he isn't . One way or the other by the end of this year we will know if we need to bring someone else in here, and I think that is probably how it will end up.

WRONG ALL WRONG

ARMANDO:

YOU TOOK STILL PHOTOS.

MANY OF NFL CORNERS RUN 40 YARDS IN LESS THAN 4.4 SECONDS.

SO THE 3 CBs STANDING RIGHT BY BESS MEANS NOTHING.

NOT SAYING HE COULDN'T HAVE MADE THE THROW.

BUT IF YOU LOOK AGAIN AT THE POCKET THE FIRST ONE HAS A D-LINEMEN IN HIS FACE.

LOOK AT HENNE'S FEET YOU CAN SEE HE WAS MOVING AWAY FROM THE RUSH.

HIS FEET WEREN'T SET TO MAKE A THROW.

IN THE SECOND PIC THE NOW TWO LINEMEN WERE IN BACK OF HIM AND HE MOVED UP IN THE POCKET.

WHERE YOU HAVE THE CIRCLE IS NOT THE POCKET.

FIRST THE POCKET IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TACKLES.

CHAD IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HASH MARKS SO HOW CAN THE POCKET BE ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE HASH MARKS.

IF HE THROWS THE BALL TO HARTLINE AND THE DB MAKES A GREAT PIC LIKE IN THE FALCONS GAME THEN WHAT.

OH P.S

HE HAD A GOOD GAME AGINST ATLANTA. NOT GREAT BUT GOOD NON THE LESS.

A PIC SAYS A THOUSAND WORDS.

BUT YOU HAVE TO SEE THE BIG PICTURE.

AND YOU DON'T

THANKS MANNY SUAREZ

THIS REALLY SHOWS ARMANDO SEES WHAT HE WANTS.

Armando must not have noticed another important detail in the first picture - Henne's feet.
Even IF Bess is open, it would have been physically impossible to throw the ball with the required velocity and accurancy because at that precise moment Henne was adjusting his place in the pocket and his right foot was off the ground. If had tried to throw it, it would have been a soft, slow pass that the defender could have at least batted down if not intercept, perhaps even going the distance.
Armando, go outside and throw a football with your right foot in the air. Have fun.

Read an article on the Sun-Sentinel yesterday, talking about the Cowboys' retreads. It quotes Sparano basically saying he likes those guys because they're familiar with how he conducts practices. That's it! That's why even though the track record is about 10-20% of those players actually work out for the team, Sparano wants to keep piling up ex-Cowboys because they know how he likes to conduct practices.

That's the DUMBEST statement I think I've EVER heard from a head coach. And frankly, this is the reason if Sparano isn't here next year it will only be his fault (and Ireland too). These guys just don't get it.

You don't do what you FEEL is right, or THINK is right. You do what WORKS! Who cares if you grew up learning smashmouth football. Who cares if you're a conservative, run first coach. If the NFL dictates that you stay up with other teams in the league and especially your division, then you do whatever you have to in order to adjust to that reality.

Sparano was way too late to changing the offense to meet the times (and the player most affected by that decision was Henne). Now he's WAY too late to understand those Cowboys' retreads don't really help your team and more times than not HURT your team (Akin Ayodele, Bobby Carpenter, Keith Davis, now Marc Colombo, I can go on and on).

Sparano needs to learn to TEACH. If he wants players who practice a certain way, teach them. Discipline them if they don't. But don't just get a player because you like that they know how you want them to practice. No one won a SB with a team full of perfect practice players.

Armando trying to break down game film is funny. I remember that play to a tee and even listened to the replay were the announcers commented on no thorwing land A-Man. Look at the Tampa player in front of Henne with his arms fully extended over his headblocking the passing lane. If Henne throws that ball it is tipped in the air or knocked down. sure Bess was open if Henne floats the ball...but with the defender breaking back toward Bess it becomes a pick 6. A-Man...just tell us what happens in practice and leave the film breakdown to the experts. There is a reason you write and are not on NFL network!

DC, that was funny when he said that, like TS runs a completely different practice from the rest of the NFL!

Here is a little story to share. One Patriots practice Tom Brady was throwing to receivers and missing every throw. They were under thrown, out of bounds, low and on the ground. In a panic, the media from New England approach Billy B and said OMG...what is wrong with Brady? He looks terrible, missing everything, receivers, running backs...everything. Bill called the media ignorant, showed them the Brady practice schedule that read, work on short under throws to draw pass interference, outside low passes for 2 minute drill, and leading the receivers so they can work on stretching for catches. Not saying Henne missed those passes I'm just saying that coaches, players and teams have things they want to work on that we are not always aware of....A-Man, chill out with the Henne bashing...I noticed you didn't break down the 60 yard TD Henne threw! If Henne starts bad and continues...let the calls for his head begin but until then I'm with him as improved and ready to take the next step.

Exactly DC, Couldnt have said it better, I actually remember that interview and at the time I was like WTH?Anyhooo, We wont have to listen to his gibberish after game 4, If I think is gonna happen happends.

Armando. If you click on the the first picture where Bess appears to be open.
You fail, YOU FAIL to mention (or see) the D lineman 2 feet in front of him with his giant hand in the air. Tell me. Was Henne suppose to throw the ball through the D-lineman's face?

You dont know what your talking about Armando.

Mando, the Dolphins don't need Henne to be great this year to be a very good team, he simply must be middle of the road. Don't get ahead of yourself

DC,YUOR COMMENTS HAVE MADE YOU GO FROM GROUP OF MARINATED ACORNS TO THE DONKY BREGADE,CONGRATULATIONS ON THE PROMOTION,YOU STIL HAVE LOTS OF WORK TILL YOU GET INTO THE GANG OF DEFEAT,BUT WITH POSTS LIKE THAT IAM SURE YOULL BE THERE COME NOVEMBER.

MANDO WRITES WITH A MID-SCHOL VOCBULARY,GIVE HIM BREAK.

Why do so many of you fuss about over a simple point of view? One man's take? It's one person's opinion. Agree or disagree, but most of you act like old maids here!

I've deleted the game from my DVR. Which player tackled Henne for only a one yard gain?

I think the running game will be fine but the passing game could be our downfall. Henne has to make the right decisions. I'm also worried about our secondary, because I don't think teams will be able to run against us on a regular basis so will they be airing it out against us???

Like it or dislike it, right or wrong, at least Armando has the courage to write his point of view no matter how unpopular it may be. Or would you rather have someone just write all is rosy every day?

Armando, the more of your stuff I read, the more I think you have it in, not only for Henne, but for the Fins as a whole. You are not an analyst, you are not a coach, you are a sports reporter, so report. I know this is a blog post so you can express your "views" all you want, but what you have here is an inept attempt to make yourself look like you actually know something about what the hell you are talking about.

I use to enjoy reading your stuff, but these last few months, not so much. Your contempt for the Dolphins is not even thinly veiled anymore, it is blatantly obvious.

It makes me wonder, are trying to catch the eye of the National Enquirer, maybe trying to land a gig there? Your "reporting" seems to be just what they are looking for.

ALoco, you've gone from writing like a clown to writing like Tony Sparano speaks. Congratulations! I think you're a huge asset to this blog!

ALoco, you actually have anything to say about the MIAMI DOLPHINS? Or do you just go around sniffing glue and then moving your fingers on the keypad and whatever ends up being typed gets posted. Cause that's how your posts sound sometime. You know, it's not too late, there's a good community college in almost any town. You should go check out the grammar classes bro.
