A look at QB ranking, Pryor, supplemental draft

Two days ago Eli Manning went on Michael Kay's radio show in New York and made the case for himself as an elite quarterback, a "top five" quarterback. He further said, "I don't consider myself a 25-interception quarterback."

Look, everyone has a right to their opinion, but facts are a wonderful things. And the facts say last season Eli Manning threw 25 interceptions. (Note to Eli Manning: That makes you a 25-interception quarterback).

I may say I'm not a chubby dude, but the scale says I'm a chubby dude. Facts. Get it?

At any rate, as the quarterback topic is something of a big topic in South Florida, I decided to see exactly who are the top five NFL quarterbacks. And the top 10. And the next five in the middling 15. And then the next below average 15. And, of course, the most terrible two at the back of the line.

My quarterback ranking 1-32? It's purely my opinion. It isn't necessarily based on statistics from a year ago alone. It is, once again, my opinion.

Lessgo!

1. Tom Brady.

2. Phillip Rivers.

3. Peyton Manning.

4. Aaron Rodgers.

5. Drew Brees. (Hurts, doesn't it?)

6. Michael Vick. (Dolphins once signed Marcus but looked away from Michael two years ago).

7. Ben Roethlisberger.

8. Josh Freeman (Superstar in the making).

9. Matt Ryan.

10. Tony Romo.

11. Eli Manning (You're not top 5, brother).

12. Matt Schaub.

13. Joe Flacco.

14. Jay Cutler.

15. Matt Cassel.

16. David Garrard. (Can the Dolphins trade for him?).

17. Matt Stafford (When healthy which is none too often).

18. Kyle Orton (The Dolphins tried to trade for him).

19. Carson Palmer (Would be ranked much higher if he was, you know, playing this year).

20. Sam Bradford (He'll be much higher by next season).

21. Matt Hasselbeck.  (Much, much higher when healthy).

22. Donovan McNabb.

23. Ryan Fitzpatrick (Sounds crazy but check the tape).

24. Mark Sanchez (Hurts).

25. Vince Young (Would be higher if he could keep his head together).

26. Alex Smith.

27. Jon Kitna.

28. Jason Campbell.

29. Chad Henne.

30. Tarvaris Jackson.

Tie, 31. Derek Anderson.

Tie, 31. Jake Del Homme

33. Jimmy Clausen.

Obviously, Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne -- the starter for "right now" in Tony Sparano's words -- is not very high on my list. How could he be based on his last two seasons?

Remember Henne's resume in those two years speaks whispers for itself: More INTs than TDs both seasons starting. Under .500 both seasons. Both seasons out of the playoffs. Benched twice last season.

And that leads me to some questions:

Am I blind to put Henne so far down the line? What am I not seeing? What do the Dolphins see that I and, I suspect, many of you don't? If the Dolphins don't see any better than we do, how could they possibly come out of the past two seasons and enter this training camp without even legitimate competition for Henne in the current training camp? Can Henne completely change his stripes and become a good quarterback this year?

Can the Dolphins still find another option at quarterback?

On that last question, you should know the NFL has set its supplemental draft for Monday. Terelle Pryor has been made eligible for that draft. The Dolphins are expected to be represented at Saturday's workout Pryor will put on for teams in the Pittsburgh area.

Will they use a late-round pick on Pryor?

Frankly, Pryor is a long, long, long range project. He proved in college he is coachable because he improved as a player at Ohio State. But he wasn't necessarily good. He couldn't lead his team to a conference title. His arm strength is average at best and accuracy is inconsistent.

Is he worth a seventh-round pick? Maybe.

In my opinion, North Carolina 3-4 OLB Michael McAdoo, Western Carolina's Torez Jones, and Lindenwood's 314-pound DE Keenan Mace, are better prospects than Pryor. Defensive back Tracy Wilson is also in the supplemental draft.

Eli is not even the 2nd best qb in the Manning house.

Too bad there isn't a good Right Tackle, pass-catching Tight End, or a pulling Guard in the supplemental draft, huh?

Another good point lafinsfan.

Henne's in the final year of his contract and he's leaving at end of season.

lafins, maybe they're basing their assesment on what they've seen? Perhaps? A remote possibility?

Based on what we've all seen, it's really hard to argue Armando's ranking of Henne, give or take a spot or 2, without looking stupid.

Did you hear NFL radio's stop to Miami training camp the other day? ALL they talked about was the QB position & how it's one of the most unstable situations in the NFL. I wonder why that is?

2 days prior to being at Miami camp, the analysts went as far as to say Miami's FA period & our lack of addressing the qb position was an epic failure.

Are you REALLY trying to tell us that a minority of bloggers here have a better pulse on the state of the QB position & franchise than former scouts, GM's, players, coaches etc?

People here grasp at straws to defend what this team & Qb does when the evidence is completely to the contrary. There is a reason the majority of talking heads are down on the fins.

Henne is not as bad as some will make you believe. He will keep you from going 1-15 but is he better than 7-9. And you need to be better than 7-9 to cut it.

He should be ranked about where he was in QB rankings last year - with the McNabb's and Hasselbeck's of the world.

But we need someone who is top 14 or so to have any chance of winning a championship - I mean isn't that the objective. Sure a qb doesn't win on his own bu the days of winning in spite of your qb are long gone. You need to have one in the top half of the league to be in the mix.

But man, ranking Romo and Freeman ahead of Eli? Come on, he won the big one where he was a vital cog against one of the best teams that ever played and kept the 1972 Dolphins from being insignificant - because that Patriot team would've been the consensus best team in history. How hard would that be to digest on top of 400 point daily drops in the Dow Jones?

I don`t agree with Mando`s top 32 QB`s in the League. In the 1st place until P.Rivers can get over the hump and not choke come playoff time then you can`t put him ahead of Payton who will probably own every meaningful passing stat by the time he`s done as well as having taken his team to 2 S.B.`s winning one were he was MVP and taking the other one down to the wire. Aaron Rodgers had the same problem in G.B. putting up monster Reg. Season # without the post Season success until making the leap last Season so in my book he edges Rivers as well.

I agree with the rest of his top ten till the 10th spot because I would take Eli over Romo any day. Romo also has nice Reg. Season # but has never won in the Playoffs and when he went head to head with Eli in the 2007 Playoffs with the NFC Champ. game in the balance to go to the dance Eli outplayed him and won it all that year, also remember that the Giants were 10-0 in 08 and had dominated both Arz. and Pitt. that years S.B. teams when the Burress incident happened which also put MLB Antonio Pierce in doubt sending them in a tail spin. If not I think they had a good chance to repeat, so Romo in my book is not higher on any list than Eli.

On Terrell Pryor I saw him vs. the Canes last season and was not very impressed while he did win he does it with his legs out of the pocket. I see him being a Brad Smith type player IF he focuses just not an everydown QB. I slso am not a big fan of the Supplemental Draft because the players who enter the League that route are usually either problemed players or QB`s jumping because of Coaching changes and Pryor is the latter.

The last time we flirted wth that draft was under Saban who liked the potential of Ahmad Brooks MLB out of Vrginia and luckily for us he passed because he was a flop in Cin. who took him. He did take Manny Wright though, remember him he`s the guy who Saban screamed at for forgetting to put on pads in a full contact practice and the kid left the field in full blown tears. Were all still waiting for him to get over his emotional BOO BOO to this day, things worth noting about the Supplamental Draft!

lafinsfan, dude, you hit is right on the head. Not only that, look at the pressure during games this guy has. The d misses at least 20 picks last year when we are winning. Next play against us is a 3 or a 7. We lose. I didn't see a lot of forced funbles. No knock on the d overall except for the lack of turnovers.

So we are down with 2 to play and he is forced to throw it up for grabs.

I am not comparing Henne to Brady but the guy was often given very little to work with. I say with a bit of luck and we hold on to those picks this year and the win total goes up significantly. Also the R&R express were pretty slow last year. More pressure on Henne.

He has nowhere to go but up and good on him and us when he does.

There is a reason the majority of talking heads are down on the fins...."and it has zero or very little to do with Armando & Omar."

forgot the last part...

Why is Henne ranked so HIGH? you're right MOST EVERYBODY sees that henne is garbage. Improvement to me is NOT MAKING THE SAME MISTAKES OVER AGAIN. New one's are fine as long as you learn from them. But HENNE just doesn't get it. He sticks to the script and does not know how to function after the play breaks down. THAT is DOWNFALL - simple IQ and common sense. Elite QBs have that ability to IMPROVISE.

Could Pryor put on a bunch of weight and be a monster tight end down the road?

Note to front office - notice how the teams with the best QBs tend to make the playoffs? See any correlation? Just saying.

What's the word on Pat Devlin?

Idk if most of you listen to espn radio much or if Colin Cowerds the herd is played on the station u listen to but he made a great point the other day about Henne and dirty Sanchez, he said they are basically the same Qb.. They both have their problems but the jets D keeps him in games, the fins D is awesome in my opinion so that should be us then... Compare Henne and sanchezs stats last year and u will see they are the same.. Why in ur opinions are the dolphins not where the jets are? Defenses win championships as they always say, I guess when Henne makes mistakes its at the worst possible moments?

Chris, I think the FO gets it. I don't think some of us bloggers do LOL

Some refuse to accept that there are about 5 bloggers here that know more than all the analysts and ex NFL personnel combined. Maybe these bloggers can be part of the supplemental draft and become pundits for the major sports outlets.

There is one recurring theme on this blog. Quite often the naysayers present logical, objective reasoning (whether they are right or wrong is a different matter), while the supporters pretty much take an 'I'm Right, You're Wrong and if you don't like it you are a moron' mentality.

Pafinsfan86, Sanchez is no better than Henne statistically. They are both spotty with decision making & accuracy. It's true.

I do think Armando has him ranked pretty accurately & ahead of Henne because:

Sanchez makes BIG time throws in the clutch, when they count. Other than that, they are both equally mediocre or below average.

It just makes my laugh.... Really... outloud.

Alex Smith better the Henne and Jason Campbell???

top 5 have how many rings?... and the top 11 have sb rings too. case closed. you need a qb in the 1-15 to win!. henne?. ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????.
get the message here folks?.lol

Actually, JSchmoe, it's my opinion that the talking heads DON'T really watch what's going on before making their opinions. They read more than anything else.

That said, show me what Dilfer or Jaworski has to say about Henne, someone with knowledge of the position, someone who really breaks down tape, and I'll buy it. I remember last year, when Henne got benched for the Tennessee game, Jeff Fisher said he was kind of glad because he thought Henne would give them trouble. And, as it turns out, he did.

I'm not saying Henne's great. I'm just saying the prevailing opinion on him might not be accurate.

Come on! Kitna, Smith and Campbell ahead of Henne! Your Dolphin negativity is shining thru. No wonder the front office doesn't give you locals the time of day.

lafinsfan

See Phil Simms recent breakdown on Henne. Wasn't too flattering. He broke down his arm motion and lack of accuracy, as though its here to stay. He discussed how other QB's improved their throwing motion drastically after the first couple of years in the NFL, but not Henne. You can find a link to the audio under the tweets. Assuming you are interested in all views.

la. if you lived down here you would know that henne sux.lol

It just makes my laugh.... Really... outloud.

Posted by: Poizen | August 18, 2011 at 02:32 PM

Who cares...REALLY?

Henne sucks!!! Why waste the discussion???

I don't think should be as low as he is but what has he done to prove otherwise, I'm all for him being the qb for the team, I am giving him one more year to step up his game before I say otherwise. I also like that they have devlin, I hope the team can groom him into a good qb. I'm expecting big things outta the fins this year, new OC.. He knows what he has to do, he know why henning was fired, he will be agressive and if it fails then fine atleast the team is being aggressive

Sparano's the problem.

Dagnell, if this f.o. is so smart, why were we 1-7 at home last year? Why have we made the playoffs twice in the last decade? I don't really want to know the time of day by a bunch of morons...I'll pass. You can be satisfied with 7-9 or 8-8 every year...The real fans are NOT...Thanks dude...

I'd rank Henne in the low to mid 20s ahead of guys like Hasselbeck and McNabb based on the "potential" factor. The jury is still out, at least to a degree. That being said anywhere in the 20s ain't gonna cut it.

Will Phill Simms be good enough?

I already told you NFL radio went to trainging camp and saw first hand for themselves. They reviewed game footage of Henne. Not listened to Blog reporters who are nothing more than paid glorified fans. Even they are objective about Henne's standing.

How about every other analyst other than John Gruden (Who has a crush on everyone) that...

Oh forget it. With some of you, nothing anyone says will ever make sense.

Last year you guys blamed Henning for Henne's INT.S. Who are you going to blame this year??????

To all you haters out there. Ask yourself how long it would take for another team to grab Henne if he was released - about 30 seconds. And in case no one has noticed, the N E Patriots and their pretty boy QB haven't won a playoff game in almost 4 years. I would love to have seen Brady, Manning and Brees work behind the Dolphins Oline last year. It was downright pathetic and when they did actually open a hole our RBs were so freakin slow, a 12 yard gain felt like a huge play.

If this f.o is so smart, why is our QB situation still the same? (Oh sorry, we've got Matt Moore instead of Tyler Thigpen)...Why is our TE situation still the same? Why is our o-line still the same besides Pouncey? Oh yeah, we've got Colombo...Bottom line is not much has changed...

Schmoe, speaking of crushes!!! Last year yours was on Henne!!!!

SONE HENNE THE GREAT WILL THROW FOR 4000 YDS AND 44 TDs, THEWN THE GANG OF DEFEAT,DONKTY BRIGADE,GROYUP OF MARINATED ACORNS WILL VOICE THJERE DISPLEASURE ON WHAT TIME THE GAMES ARE PLAYED,LIKE FORREST GUUMP SAID "STUPID IS,STUPID DOES".

Iafinsfan, it's nice to see the Easter Bunny on here every once in awhile - AKA a well thought out and reasonable opinion and analysis.

I don't think should be as low as he is but what has he done to prove otherwise,

by pafinsfan

That's exactly right. I'm not saying he sucks either. I'm saying, based on what he's produced, his ranking is fair. Maybe a spot or 2 higher. To dispute that is to live in a bubble.

People refuse to rate him on his record. Instead, it's always a what if. A Coordintaor. Playbook, weapons, oline, health etc.

Those are all factors but there can't alwasy be excuses or what if's. You are graded on what you do, not what you can do.

Fair or unfair, that's life.

Oh no, someone created another new name to call me a looser, is it because i do not agree with them.

Now my feelings are hurt. to bad those really really tough guys don't post who they really are...

then of course, they would never meet you to say it to your face...

so sad.

Aloco, One thing that should not be in front of Henne's name is Great, Please buy a clue sir.

Why does it make all you people so mad, who do not like Henne, that some people do, or want to give him a chance.

Why do "some" of you fly off the handle and start calling people names, or making an alias to insult others?

It is a conversation, everyone does not have to agree with you, who ever you people are...

fins, Please stop posting your he said, she said posts. Very immature.

If you read anything I write here, my opinion has, is & will continue to be this...whether you grasp it or not this will be the last time:

Henne is our QB. I'll support him when games start. I wan't better, was promised better. My main gripe is with the FO for NOT brigning in legit competition like they promised.

I'm tired of making excuses for poor play. I did defend him last year but how does that deter from the fact that I think he isn't the answer? I don't boo or root for our players to fail when the games start.

Please, bring an adult mindset to the blog instead of trying to turn everything into a childish debate.

Amen poizon

You guys keep criticizing Armando all you want but the FACT is in the definition of a FAN...

"a belief or behavior involving uncritical zeal with an obsessive enthusiasm for a past time or hobby"

Kudos to Armando for making a living on us!

Poizen, why do you comment on every imposter? Your egging them on. To acknowledge them is to encourage them.

When your in the bottom 3/4's of the list what does it matter what order you are in....

Henne and the O-line will be the reason Sparano gets an early exit from the 2011 season. 0-4 to start the season - out the door by game 6.

There will be no Pennington-like deal to save his job. Just say 'no' to Pryor!!!

To all you haters out there. Ask yourself how long it would take for another team to grab Henne if he was released - about 30 seconds. Dagnell | August 18, 2011 at 02:46 PM

The 3 QB`s you mention all had to deal with big time adversity last year.

P.Manning had a journeyman RT/RG and a backup LG to deal with along with a bunch of no-name WR`s (R.Wayne dinged all season, A.Gonzalez IR and A.Collie concussions ect..) do to a horrible rash of injuries and a TE nobody ever heard of in Tamme when D.Clarck was lost at mid-season and still won his divsion, without Manning I don`t think they win 4 games last year, very Marino like season for him.

T.Brady had to deal without his best O-Linmann in L.Mankins till week 10 (Holdout) and M.Light is seriously slipping at LT. Wake owned him week 4 last season it was the only bright spot of the game for us. Welker was slowed some returning from injury, they cut Moss loose and bring in an over the hill D.Branch. They also got some journeyman players at RB and he wins MVP going 14-2 with two rookie TE`s as the featured players in there pass Offense.

D.Brees had to wing it without a Run game or the threat of play action all season playing with street FA`s at RB and did struggle some but still got into the post Season and put up monster # in the process.

I still believe Henne the best option at QB for Miami this Season because believe Matt Moore to be a journeyman at best and want to lay to rest the what if`s with Henne once and for all but it`s insane to compare his play on last years team to the guys mentioned here because I think those 3 could and would have done better and DID play with there own amount of set backs as well last year.

POIZEN HERE IS A POSTER OF GREAT TA:LENT,SOME COULD LEARN HOW TO POST LIKE THIS GREAT MAN,OTHERS NEED TO GET JOBS OR EDUCATION.

Joe, You have a valid point, I guess. Specifically I was called out, so I responded. but I see you point.

Just to nitpick, but Henne's record in 2009 was 7-6, a winning record. It was Pennington who started the other 3 losses.

Oh no, someone created another new name to call me a looser, is it because i do not agree with them.

Did I call you a loser? No, I asked you a question.

Pity, a loser with a guilty conscience!

Go cry to your mama or grow a set, would ya please?

Mando, We all have a right to opin, but you again show what a Hater you are by suggesting that A. Smith, Campbell and Kitna (and a few others) are better than Henne. As I've said many times before, go and take your Fin-Hate and write for the Pats. Be quick though and do so before Mrs. Bundchen's skill sets fade and you are left with just the Patsies.

All right, I just listened to the Phil Simms analysis. Made a good point about Henne's accuracy and throwing motion. He's surprised that it hasn't improved more since college. Look, it's a good point. Henne has some stuff he needs to improve on, and a little more swagger out there would be great to see. But I didn't hear him say anything like "the Dolphins can't win with Henne" or "they can't win until they address the quarterback position."

So I'm going to stand by my earlier contention: That Henne's not as big a problem as our beat writers say he is. And the "national concern" over the qb position in Miami is, as a result, not unwarranted. But overblown.

http://bumpandrun.com/2011/08/free-agent-frenzy-leaves-one-team%e2%80%99s-fans-with-a-bitter-taste/

Sittin here plastered over Cap'n n Coke.

Thinkin bout Mando is his tight short shorts.

How it must be so hot out in the August heat.

Yet I'm here at home where I can beat my meat.

I got a little Cap'n in me!

Valhalla!

Why no compatition for Henne?

Because the Billionaire said so.

He doesn't have to share his toy if he doesn't want to.

And their's nothing you can do about it.

Nana-a-booboo!!!!

I always kind of liked Kitna. Thought he would have been a great fit for this team at least for a year or two. Not the greatest talent but a scrapper and good leader. Think he would have elevated the people around him, which is one me my biggest knocks on Henne not his talent or stats.

Sorry should have put a description: here is a link that probably won't make many fans happy on the Dolphins.

I love how Mando seems like he's smiling just for me!

But I didn't hear him say anything like "the Dolphins can't win with Henne" or "they can't win until they address the quarterback position."

Do they need to tell us what most of us already know? We really haven't won with Henne. Proof is in the pudding.

The coach benched him multiple times last year. They tried & failed to upgrade the position in the offseason.

In the end, all this falls on Chad, albeit unfairly, when it should fall on the incompetent FO.

All right, I just listened to the Phil Simms analysis. Made a good point about Henne's accuracy and throwing motion. He's surprised that it hasn't improved more since college.
