Henne: 'I need to push the tempo more'

Was it a Dan Marino performance? No.

Was it a performance that proves Chad Henne is Miami's franchise quarterback? No.

Was it a good outing for Miami's starting quarterback? Absolutely.

As I wrote in my column today, Henne was more a solution than a problem in Saturday's 17-13 loss to Tampa Bay. He completed 10 of 13 passes and showed good command in the face of an angry rush. He found Brandon Marshall. He showed trust in Marshall. He got to the middle of the field with Anthony Fasano. He was accurate.

But there is more that must be done. Henne knows this. The Patriots are coming to town. They are going to watch the job the Miami offensive line did last night and believe themselves capable of getting after Henne. And they are going to attack the Miami defense and force Henne to keep up.

As I told you last week, the Dolphins need to turn up the tempo. Last night, Henne talked about, guess what, turning up the tempo. He also discussed his ability to audible. Last year he had a chance to audible at the line on 'check with me plays," meaning he could pick from one play or another.

Now he can pick just about any play.

He also discusses here how far along he feels he's progressed as a leader.

Hey ALoco, how do you like Jake Long at RT instead of Colombo, with the risk of leave Murtha at LT for the season open?

loslobos I'm not sure how deep your football knowledge runs but looking at stats to see improvement is one of the dozens of things to judge from.

"BTW...what improvement?"

1. Looking off receivers and moving through his progressions better. Hasn't been staring down WRs as much.

2. Huddle presence and leadership.

3. Showing he's working on the touch throw evident by several lob passes thrown in the past two weeks.

4. Reading the defense better and now being able to audible out of bad plays which he is doing well.

5. Better communication with his WRs.

6. Getting the ball out quicker.

7. Running for a few yards when the play breaks down and the situation calls for it. Seems to be more aware in the pockets and steps up and to the side when pressure is on instead of standing still like a robot.

These are ALL changes that anyone who knows the QB position can see with his own two eyes. The kid is maturing.

"He is not Tom Brady"! No s**t who said he was. who's comparing him with the best QB of the past decade?

Perhaps the offensive line comes together and plays well against the cheatriouts, hopefully.

However, if they dont and RT/the right side remains a problem this season then it is looking to me that Odrick and Thomas were luxury picks that ought to have been offensive linemen.

Hindsight is 20/20 but shouldn't Sparano/Ireland have been able to see that Columbo is not up to snuff?

It is their profession after all.

Just dont get how the HC(Being a former O-Line coach) cant figure this thing out, We're going on year 3 of this.I mean I understand Rome wasnt built in a day, But come on.

Year 4 now. Oline progress by this FO:

Jake Long: good
Donald Thomas: gone
Shawn Murphy: gone
Andrew Gardner: gone
Pouncey: good
Jerry: bust
Grove: gone
Smiley: gone
Columbo: soon gone

This is a major WhatTheF!?

Hey Lobos, mister arithmitic magician:

Henne's "typical" pass attempts will not be 13, but closer to 26, or twice your stat-rant.

That comes out to 466 yards using your math.

Guess what? That is 4 and 1/3 length the football field.

If we started on the one inch line four times, Henne would have thrown us into four TD's, and give or take a couple inches, Carpenter would get to kick a 33 yard field goal.

Thanks for your calculations...sissy

Guys, Not saying that one game a season makes, and not saying that lose the first game, (This is not the NCAA)The season's over, What are your thoughts that the Monday Nighter is a must win for the fins?

Posted by: LouD | August 28, 2011 at 02:01 PM

That is sheer whining friend. The other team seized more opportunities than we did. We had two turnovers early close to the endzone and couldn't get a TD. We couldn't make a 2 minute drive like WINNERS that get to the playoffs do. One bad call is not that game. What if we got the call? Ben being a WINNER could have drove for a WINNING score like WINNERS do. So you can't say that call changed the outcome. We lost, bottom line. Accept it.

adrian solorza I don't know if you're drunk or a mad genius. I think that is a very intriguing idea considering Jake can play either side with incredible efficiency and Murtha is doing decent on the left side, much better than Columbo on the right. I think the best thing to do for now though is to stick Murtha at RT for the next couple of weeks and see how he does in practice and give him extended time in the last game. That way when Jake plays against New England he wont be in an unfamiliar position because as he can play well there he wont have enough practice reps under his belt. We don't need him hurting his knee trying to play catch up. But your idea is something to think about mid season if they can't get this worked out.

FP, I think whichever management steps into a situation, they should be given at least 2 years to see at the very least progress. Year one, we clinched the division. Some people will say it was because of an easy schedule, others would say it's because of Pennington, whatever. I don't agree with either. I don't believe there's such a thing as an easy schedule in the NFL because the parity is so evident. Having said that, even since then, it's been downhill. Were all the decisions made bad? Of course not. I hope not. There's been Wake, Langford, maybe Soliai who by the way got drafted by Mueller, not Ireland. There's been good decisions, but also a lot of bad ones. Ireland hasn't really signed and free agents that have been solid contributors aside from Dansby (And he didn't come cheap). Jake Long was nice, but Matt Ryan wouldn't of been too shabby either. Marshall looks like he could have a good season, but we gave up 2 second rounders for him. Our o-line is a mess. The tight end position is also a concern. Free safety we don't know. And of course QB. I understand Henne has played 2 good games in a row, but before I get carried away like some fans, I want to see it in a regular season game. If Henne fails, what do we get out of these 4 years of Parcells-Ireland-Sparano? Whoever will step in will have to start all over again. That's what's been happening in Miami for years now. No continuity. We went from Wannstedt (failed), Saban (failed), Cameron (failed) and now Sparano. When is it going to end? Shula was much better than any of these clowns.

My mistake, that would be 4 and 2/3rd the length of field. Even better!

#1, Shula is a "GOD".

People still yapping about the Pitt game, like Ross too, are just plain sissies. We squandered opportunities against a better team. That is how you lose. We lost. Call or no call.

Just have to weigh in on the Steeler debacle last year.

That game was lost in the 1st qtr by the pathetic conservative offensive philosophy of Sparnao/Henning.

Numerous loses last year could have been wins if not for the playing not to lose, constantly positioning drives for FG's offensive approach IMO.

Long is the best LT in the NFL, you don't move him to RT. Ridiculous. Better to have the best LT than the best RT.

Anyway, I'll be back later guys...Father duties calling me.

Oregon, It's Coaching IMHO.

FP,
exactly. Though I am happy that Sparnao has finally 'looked in the mirror' and decided he needs to change his offensive philosophy, I am disgusted that it has taken 3 years for that to happen.

If the offensive line remains the downfall of this team and Sparano justifiably gets the boot this year, I really hope the team signs an innovative offensive mind to be the next HC/OC.

This is a passing league and increasingly an uptempo offense league.

Oregon, Like Someone once said "Better now then never".Peace, I too got to roll to Homew Depot, See you all later/

Ha ha ha, thank you for the replay LouD, I'm both, and thats also a reason why that post was for ALoco, he sometimes criticize my posts, and I have other idea, hire O'Hara at center, Pouncey, to LG, Incognito at RG, Carey and Long as usual, and sudden we have a pull guard and an unscouted OL, but with a risk of an OL with no glue at that moment.

Oregon, In the Preseason I've Noticed something(Again it's only Preseason) But I've noticed TDs., Just Saying the new OC might just Make Ireland look like a Genious.LMAOROTF, Sorry I had to put that in, See You Guys later.

FP,

Yeah I am happy about the shift in approach. Hopefully it continues in the regular season.

FP @ 2:07

Ireland doesn't make these decisions in a vacuum. You can bet Sparano has some say. Matter of fact, remember the presser after the failed attempt to hire Jim Harbaugh? Forget (Ross or Ireland) who said it but Sparano was to have more input on personnel decisions.

But what it all boils down to is, piss poor talent evaluation. Especially on the offensive side of the line with special emphasis on O-line.

Looks like we better hope that some team is so loaded on their offensive linemen that they release a good one and the Dolphins can pick him up.

Sort of a sad place for the franchise to be.

Care to explain your out of the blue attack?

"The Patriots are coming to town".
Armando Salguero

Yeah, they're coming to town, but they better bring it.

"And they are going to attack the Miami defense and force Henne to keep up".
Armando Salguero

Yeah, they're going to attack, but will they be successful. I mean, who does NE have that's a deep threat,
it's not Chad Johnson,
it's not Welker,
it's not Hernandez,
so who do they have. And they're running game ain't all that either. Against NE, all you have to be is a great tackling defense, take away the underneath stuff, and you got em'.

I'm glad Sparano said what He said the other day, He wasn't tell the other teams to bring, He was saying that we're going to bring it...

If, If, If..... If the queen had balls she'd be king. Get rid of colombo, Peter Falk says so....

Oregon ,

Why did you say that about ( montana Fin )?

Stop disrespecting people.

Meat Salad Sandwiches with a side of Penith Lamb Soft Sausages...

Why does this dumb iPhone app scree up and not post what I type...frustrating. Mando, please fix.

Craig M,

Dude, what are you talking about?

I didnt address whoever montana fin is until asking what the out of the blue attack toward myself was about.

Wow Armando. You become more pretentious by the article. Please stop.

Craig M,

Thanks. See you Monday.

Go Fins !!!!!!!

Craig M = montana fin = douchebag.

i really like mike nolan and daboll. my problem is with ireland/sparano. both are clueless. tony just figured out he needed to change the offense and gave daboll the job. nolan saved sparano last year and should have been the head coach. anyways if we do anything this season the credit goes to nolan and daboll, not the goofs at the top!

Oregon,

You have got a fake impostor on here. Highly entertaining!! It wasn't me who make the comments. I didn't actually read what they wrote, just be aware it had nothing to do with me.

I hope Henne Plays well and we beat the Pats, it looks like he has improved, I was one of those who thought we should have upgraded the QB position, but it doesn't mean I wanted Henne to fail so I could be right , I just want the dolphins to win and win in the playoffs .IT HAS BEEN A LONG TIME PEOPLE

Does anyone know what happened to John Jerry?
He played good for a while last year and now he is out of the picture???

Amazing that Armando threatens to ban people for the fake posters we he's on here live but does nothing about cleaning up the clowns who do it when he's not around. That tells me that it's really about blog 'hits', as opposed to have a quality blog. Too bad really. There's some quality guys on here. The clowns and name-callers and fakes really drag this blog down.

Shakti96,

Looks like Jerry will end up as a back up guard on this team, assuming he makes the team. For whatever reason he's fallen out of favour on this team. I don't watch him enough to know what the problem is. I don't know if it's because the FO doesn't like his work ethic, his inconsistency, his attitude or the fact he just isn't getting it done. But yeah, he's certainly fallen from grace.

here's some quality guys on here. The clowns and name-callers and fakes really drag this blog down.

Totally agree. And sorry for mistakenly grouping you in. Trying to sort out all the fake posting is confusing.

PER: ARMANDO:

Was it a Dan Marino performance? No.

Was it a performance that proves Chad Henne is Miami's franchise quarterback? No.

Was it a good outing for Miami's starting quarterback? Absolutely.

ARMANDO ARE YOU HIGH? HAD MARINO PUT UP 10-13 175YDS AND A TD IN THE FACE OF A POOR PERFORMING OLINE YOUR ARTICLE WOULD HAVE BEEN TITLE: "VINTAGE MARINO".

HENNE DOES IT AND IT'S NOT MARINO NOR FRANCHISE-LIKE. GRANTED WE'RE A WAYS FROM PROCLAIMING HENNE FRANCHISE QB OR MARINOII. STILL IN THE FACE OF THE POOR PERFORMING OLINE LAST NIGHT, 10-13(77%) 175YDS 1TD NO PICKS, DOES QUALIFY AS BOTH MARINO-LIKE AND FRANCHISE-LIKE PERFORMANCE.

IF THIS NUMBER LINE ISNT A MARINO-LIKE OR FRANCHISE QB-LIKE PERFORMANCE FACED WITH THE DIFFICULTY OF PUTTING UP THOSE NUMBERS. THEN YOU TOTALLY SUCK AS A SPORTS WRITER. CHADS NUMBERS LINE IS EXACTLY AS I STATED. ONLY THING SEPARATING HENNE FROM JOINING THE EXCLUSIVE CLUB OF NFL QB'S RIGHT NOW?

SEEING HIM HAVE THESE TYPE PERFORMANCE WITH REGULAR CONSISTENCY. CONSIDERING THE DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY, HENNE DEFINITELY HAD A MARINO-LIKE FRANCHISE QB-LIKE PERFORMANCE LAST NIGHT. WERE YOU LOOKING FOR HIM TO STAND VERTICALLY ON HIS FINGER TIPS TOO?

DyingBreed

Why so bitter and hostile these days? Did you catch your wife with someone in the Exxon bathroom?

EVEN HENNE'S 3 INCOMPLETES WERE ALL CATCHABLE BALLS DROPPED BY GATES, BESS, AND HARTLINE. CHAD'S NUMBERS SHOULD HAVE EASILY OF BEEN 13-13 FOR WELL OVER 200YDS AND POSSIBLY 1 MORE TD.

IF THIS WASNT FRANCHISE QB OR MARINO-LIKE, ARAMANDO, THEN THERE'S NO CURE FOR WHAT AILS YOU.

AS I SAID, HENNE HAS TO DO THIS WITH REGULARITY TO OFFICIALLY JOIN THE EXCLUSIVE QB'S CLUB. STILL IT DOESNT EXCLUDE THE FACT THAT THIS PERFORMANCE WAS EXCLUSIVE QB'S CLUB-LIKE.

I just scanned the last couple of blogs and I dont see an imposter and I have never directed anything toward montana fin.

bizarre.

It is not my style to get hostile or attacking.

I find that aspect on this blog to very lame.

GOOD MORNING (AFTERNONE) FLIPPER, THOUGHT YOUD NEVER WAKE UP,WHAT WIL YUO BE FLIP-FLOPING ON TODATY?

bitter-bitter,

No, actually me and your wife were caught in the Exxon bathroom. Im pissed because I just about to cume all over her face! LOL...

ALoco,

Mr. Cyborg of Armando's fake blog, how are you and your many personalities doing today? Sorry I had to backhand slap your many me bitter-bitter. LOL....

FLIPPER(DB) WHAT WILL YUO BEFLP-FLOPING ON TODAY?. I"LL CHECK BACK IN 20 MINUTES AN FIND OUT AGAIN.IN ANOTHER 10 I'LL CHECK OUT AGAIN.AFTER 10 MORE,IM SURE YOUll FLIP AGAIN,AGAIN. BACALA MY FOOT.

3 REASON WHY ALOCHOL SHOULD BE BANNED.#1ODIN,#2 FLIPPER BREED,#3 FAT CHICKS.ITS TIME FOR DINER, GOOD AFTERNOON DONKYS.

What will probably go unseen from Friday night's loss is that it is probably our best loss of the season.

By this I mean, had we won this game inspite of the oline's poor play it may have sent a negative message "poor play wont result in loss". Im so glad this team wont be able to go into the regular season with this false sense of swagger. Especially with game one's opponent being Brady and the Pats.

Brady will be coming into the season with the bitter taste of the 34-10 preseason drubbing to the Lions in his mouth. Especially seeing how its the last taste of preseason action he will have. So we dont need our team coming into that game with a supremely false sense of swagger.

Sorry guys, Again cant stop reading Alocos posts. It's like driving by a accident, You should'nt look, but yet you have to., This guy is Funny.Sorry, back to football.

Im out. You sissies can have your blog back since it now seems when I come you hide. Practice up on your hiding skills because I will be back pusses! LOL...

After last nights Marino-like performance from Chad Henne, ESPN has moved us up in its power rankings from 24 to 23, and moved Sparano one week closer to dismissal.

Less than 3 weeks from opening day and Tony's merry go round Oline is still going around, just not so merrily.
