Was it a Dan Marino performance? No.
Was it a performance that proves Chad Henne is Miami's franchise quarterback? No.
Was it a good outing for Miami's starting quarterback? Absolutely.
As I wrote in my column today, Henne was more a solution than a problem in Saturday's 17-13 loss to Tampa Bay. He completed 10 of 13 passes and showed good command in the face of an angry rush. He found Brandon Marshall. He showed trust in Marshall. He got to the middle of the field with Anthony Fasano. He was accurate.
But there is more that must be done. Henne knows this. The Patriots are coming to town. They are going to watch the job the Miami offensive line did last night and believe themselves capable of getting after Henne. And they are going to attack the Miami defense and force Henne to keep up.
As I told you last week, the Dolphins need to turn up the tempo. Last night, Henne talked about, guess what, turning up the tempo. He also discussed his ability to audible. Last year he had a chance to audible at the line on 'check with me plays," meaning he could pick from one play or another.
Now he can pick just about any play.
He also discusses here how far along he feels he's progressed as a leader.

Posted by: Hmmm | August 28, 2011 at 06:23 PM
It seems the improvement with Henne has a lot to do with the new scheme obviously, but the freedom to audible to other plays. We've seen this many times this pre season, and he's really thrived. You've always read about him being the last guy to leave the facility and how much tape he watches, but if you can't change a play even though you know exactly what the defense is going to do, it doesn't help you. I'm cautiously optimistic about Henne going forward.

Here is a comparison of what the Dolphins were doing from 2005 - 2009 and what Henne was doing during the same time:
DOLPHINS: Ernest Wilford, Jake Grove, 1-15, Nick Saban, Noodle Arm, Chad Pennington, Patrick Turner, Ted Ginn, the BACKDOOR wildcat play etc
HENNE: Started every game at Michigan, broke every Michigan and Big 10 passing record, ranked in top 25 for for 46 out of 48 weeks, won more games on National tv then any other college qb ever, won more games in front of 100,000+ than any other qb ever, put the following wr's into the NFL: Braylon Edwards, Mario Manningham, Steve Breaston, Jason Avant.
Posted by: PriceMaster | August 28, 2011 at 07:06 PM
Henne was pulled off the field 80 TIMES last season and he was pulled 30 TIMES in the red zone and still managed to come in 15th in yards and 16th in completion percentage.
These a s s h o l e s didn't do anything to develop Henne. They sat him behind a qb that was a career failure before the 3 surgeries on his throwing shoulder.
Finally Stephen Ross, the largest contributor to Michigan Football, stepped in and fired everyone that had anything to do with the retarded hotel/motel offense going on in this town.
The Dolphins didn't rescue Henne; if it weren't for Henne you'd still be running the BACKDOOR wildcat and looking like h o m o s in front of the whole NFL nation.

Well not sure that Ross fired anybody. Parcells walked early. Henning planned only two years, they talked him into one more year. He was retiring no matter what and he did retire.
They only really sat Henne his rookie year. Penne was injured by game three of Henne's second year and in came Henne. David Lee and Penne worked with Henne, taught him how to break down film, it is not true to say they did NOTHING to develop him. Henne is 3 games shy of a 2 year starter, not a one year starter like so many like to say.

Posted by: Rumor? | August 28, 2011 at 08:04 PM
Perspective,
Aaron Rodgers sat behind Favre, Mallet is behind Brady, Rivers was behind Brees. Those 3 get to see the ball fired downfield over and over again.
Henne sat behind Pennington. Pennington was such a poor thrower that every poster in here referred to him as Noodle Arm. Pennington is the reason the BACKDOOR wildcat was invented.
Henne learned how to run off field and stand on sideline from Pennington.

Anyway I think this team can be in the game against anybody.
And if the way to get production from Bush and Thomas is a swing pass rather than a handoff then who cares? An 8 yard gain is a good play.

I don't see your point. What does Penne's arm have to do with Henne? Nothing. Weak arm or not he was as smart as they come and able to teach Henne how to be a pro. Who cares who called Penne noodle arm and what do any of us posters really know? Penne was also the most accurate passer in NFL history. Henne had 4 years in college throwing the ball deep, does he just forget all that? Don't think so. You say Henne learned how to run off the field from Penne? Sorry, that is just a ridiculous argument.
Some of you talk about Henne like he is an infant. He knew full well from the get go he was signing up for the NFL and not the glee club. If you start a new job and your boss jumps off the bridge, are you going to do the same? Get real.
Posted by: Perspective | August 28, 2011 at 08:15 PM
Henne beat New England once, the game in 2009 when he threw > 50 times.
If he throws > 50 times in the opener then he'll put up > 400 yards. Some td's. Some int's. Some points. It'll be cool.
Win or lose.

This poor Chad Henne fan club here is really really old, and plain stupid.
Posted by: Perspective | August 28, 2011 at 08:18 PM
we will see how good henne is come time when it really matters, and it comes down to henne going for game winning drives, what will the outcome be? or getting first downs instead of 3 and outs when they have the lead and there is only 2 min. left in the game. is he going to throw pics? when i see him actually close a game out will i be somewhat convinced about his ability to be a nfl qb.

Chad Henne will win over fans by showing it in real games. A 2 minute drive to take the lead, playing well for the full game. There is no more time for excuses. Let him show it and the fans will come. Let's see 3 out of 4 good games from him.

If these BOZO's would have not traded Samson Satele for a 6th rd pick to the Raider's, who by the way is handling Shawn Rogers pretty well right now, we could have drafted a RT instead this year instead of Pouncey. What's up with there pick's John Jerry and Shawn Murphy! Also Derek Hagan, another fromer 3rd pick, gave that DB a good stiff arm to score. These guy's wanted there guy's and cut all the other previous draft picks!

Brian D is a young innovative OC and it is starting to pay off for Henne. The OL has talent and can be fixed but still not impressed with Marc"just one more question"Columbo.
Posted by: morphin | August 28, 2011 at 09:06 PM
I think this offense fits Henne skill set, it's shows and letting him audible makes Henne confidence grow!! But here is the issue and everyone knows it is the OL...me as a Long time fan it's going to sugar coat anything, the right side of the OL is terrible and to fix it is to replace it ... Colombo is not a good player Carey has back issues and he is not fast enough or his feet are not quick Enough as when he first started....so right now it's to late you can bring other guys in but than it's going to set it back 7-8 games to build cohessivness and jell... And the center has no experience so mistakes are to be expected... So who is the blame JI and TS period!! They had at least three years to fix it and they haven't accomplish anything since Jake Long first year. JI TS hasn't hit on a drafted offensive player since Jake Long but anybody would have hit on him he was going to be good I don't care who drafted him...
But other than that all failed and the jury still going to be out on Pouncy!!! So it might be another long season!! If TS was the OL coach of any other team do you guys think he would have been fired by now????

WOW- Amazing that some people are STILL calling Henne Garbage!
Some of you guys are amazing. I think if he leads us to a Super Bowl win, some of you will not be satisfied.
As far as the OL, please get help NOW!
Great posts after the game Odinseye. The most positive fan here who still manages to see the truth without rose-colored glasses.
Dying Breed was on crack last night. What a retard.

Ray bring in pro bowler Ohara at center and let Pouncey take Colombo's spot!

Cuban Menace, you and the Empress ok after Irene. Has anyone heard from him today?
Posted by: redsky | August 28, 2011 at 09:54 PM
I hope Sparano can bring himself to part ways with Columbo. HE's been a disaster ever since he got here.
Not thrilled with the idea of waiver wire replacements at this point. Need to swing a trade for quality OL help.
Posted by: finsfan72 | August 28, 2011 at 09:55 PM
Redsky I like that move, he is faster stronger and better feet!!! I like it..
Posted by: ray | August 28, 2011 at 09:55 PM
Pouncey at RT? Never considered that...
Posted by: finsfan72 | August 28, 2011 at 09:57 PM
Here is a important point. Ireland/Sparano must have the courage NOW to own up to the Columbo mistake. The sooner they admit it, the sooner (hopefully) they can correct it.
I have seen some 'mistakes' delt with in a timely manner and others drag on for what seems like forever. This is critical and has to be done now. Cut your loses and move on.

"We've got a lot of things to clean up, obviously," Sparano said after that 17-13 loss to Tampa Bay. "Everything that happened is fixable. We'll get it fixed."

Henne's pass to Marshall was nice. Contained everything he's been critiqued for. It was his second read, beautiful touch and perfect accuracy.
The guy Marshall shamed with the stiff arm was a Linebacker!
CHUNK YARDS and FIST PUMPS!!!!
Posted by: odinseye | August 28, 2011 at 11:44 PM
JFK!
It is worse than I thought. Blont 56 yard catch a carry. nobody within 15 yards of him as he catches the little dump pass.
S Smith tries to punch the ball out.
The O-line putrid. Both tackle positions too. Did not realize that Martha stunk up the joint as bad as Columbo.
What in the world was Sparano/Ireland thinking about this O-line!?
Posted by: Oregon Dolphin fan | August 28, 2011 at 11:45 PM
Really no pressure on Freeman.
On the strip Henne fumble he had less than 2 seconds before the pocket was collapsing from both sides.
With this piss poor O-line the Dolphins, a 6'5, 240-260 pound QB is required.
Unless the O-line dramatically improves the team is going to have a very difficult time this year.
Posted by: Oregon Dolphin fan | August 28, 2011 at 11:48 PM
I do not understand how after 4 years the offensive line is still so bad.
Sparano and Ireland are supposed to be from the smashmouth school where teams are built from the inside out.
They are overloaded on D line and beyond thin on the O-line.
Odrick!? Complete luxury pick that ought to have been a O-linemen. Same for Thomas.
Could have signed a perfectly serviceable FA RB and drafted O-line instead.

On the sack strip of Henne, the Bucs sent 4 rushers. Cog and Pouncey double teamed a tackle.
Murtha, Colombo and Carey all whiffed. No joke.
