« Dolphins tell Thomas he must hit hole harder | Main | Chad Henne in his own words »

Wednesday afternoon potpourri of notes

Remember I told you a couple of weeks ago the Dolphins had a competition for the starting wide reciever job opposite Brandon Marshall?

They still have a competition going for that starting wide receiver job. I asked coach Tony Sparano today if he had decided on the winner of the competition yet.

"Not yet, no, yeah, to me, it’s still open with, you know, that group of there, you know, that’s there and, you know, we’re going to play them a lot in the next couple of weeks," Sparano said. "We're going to play them a bunch this week, as much as we can play them and get a couple of guys up in the rotation this week, but you know, they’re going to play all those guys a lot in the next two weeks.”

The players vying for that starting job are Brian Hartline, Davone Bess and Clyde Gates.

---------------------------

The pressure is mounting on Will Allen to get on the field the remainder of this preseason and perform. He probably has to do it this week and next week without an injury setback to make the team. Oh yeah, playing well would also help.

“I tell the team this all the time: It’s a show me game, at some point I have to see it," Sparano said. "I got to see it on the practice field. I got to see it in the game. It took me two days out here with JT (Jason Taylor) to figure out once he got here in pads it took me two days to figure out he’s still got it.

"So now I can control his practice pace. You know JT didn’t work yesterday and I can go to JT and say you’re down today.  I’ve already seen it … I know it.  I kind of know what this guy needs to get ready to play.  He knows what he needs to get ready to play. In Will's case particularly, and Will wouldn’t be upset with me for saying this, it's just I need to see it and more importantly Will needs to see it.

"He needs to know that he can go into the game and he can do this at the rate that Will was able to do.  I give Will, I give him a lot of benefit of the doubts if you will because he’s a smart player, really smart player, probably the smartest guy I have back there and I’ve seen him do it a couple years back.  But not having him last year and really limited a little bit prior to that -- that has been a long period of time that passes.  We just need to see these guys do it at a high level.  He’s had a couple good days out here right now in a row so I’m hoping to be able to get him to the game and be able to put him in those positions."

Look for Allen Saturday against Tampa Bay.

--------------------------------

I told you a while back that Reggie Bush is a monster when it comes to working.

The Dolphins go through their walk-thru and he's there and then comes the two-hour practice and he's there and then the practice is over ... and he's still there!

Today, like most, was a 30-minute session for Bush post-practice. He was the last guy off the field.

He ran sprints by himself. Then he went over to the JUGS machine and standing a mere seven yards from the thing and caught passes slung at him at 22 MPH. By the way, when most receivers catch from the JUGS they stand 12-14 yards away. So try the closer distance sometime without breaking your nose or dislocating a finger.

Afterward, Bush jogged over to the blocking sleds and pushed them around for about 10 minutes.

The man's work ethic is beyond reproach so far. But don't believe me. Check out the video I took.

ALoco go make some MINT TEA.

Waiting for Thursday's smorgasbord of information!

i really think they brought larry johnson in because of being unhappy with thomas and his running style(upright). they want johnson to groom(change) thomas' running style imo. i hated to waste another 2nd round pick on an iffy RB. shoulda had mallet and grabbed a FA RB like mcgahee without losing another low round draft pick. ireland is clueless. i do like daboll and mike nolan!! they can evaluate talent much better than sparano/ireland.

I am not a fan of Ireland either... however:

thomes does have an upright running style VERY similar to Sammie Smith, so it does scare the hell out of me.

that being said, If I am not mistaken, the same running style was quoted for Steven Jackson of the Rams, and he made it work.

So I think it is to early to judge if thomas is the real deal or not. the fact that he fumbled on a goal line leap just like Sammie smith gave me seizures. But maybe he can fix that...

not a chance they cut hilliard. lj wont make this team, he couldnt play st for his life

sammie smith, lol i was at that game. chiefs ran it all the way back for a td. guy had one good game, the home playoff game vs kc

Yea dusty, When we drafted him that was the first thing that went through my mind. We dont even get a 3 point fist pump if that happens.

yeah living in kc ive seen thomas many times. guy just isnt very good. not fast, not powerful. couldnt believe they traded up to get him. mallet was the choice but oh well

It is not like Sammie did that once, He did it 3 times at the goal line in that year! 3 TIMES! Sammie did anger me a tad.

Hmm...morning. Been thinking about roster cuts still (after last nights blogs). Wondering if Will Allen makes it this year. Age and injuries have kept him out of the line-up and there are a couple of young kids sitting and waiting for that nickel or dime slot. Doesn't bode well for the veteran, in my opinion.
For the most part, I like this group of players that we have. I think that a lot of people aren't giving us any respect this year (Mike and Mike) and that's just fine by me if we fly under the radar. We always do better when everyone thinks we're gonna suck. It seems to motivate the team to be the underdogs.
Quarterbacks, in my opinion, can be made or broken by the offensive system that they are in. Henning is gone (thank God) and Daboll is trying to make a name for himself in the NFL. At least he's willing to take a chance or two and isn't stuck in the 80s. I think that he's even rubbing off on Sparano (who is looking in the mirror, etc.). Maybe, the days of 3 yards and a cloud of dust are gone. That's a good thing. From what I've seen, Daboll runs more of a Spread Offense which is what more of the younger kids are used to running in college. That bodes well for Henne (or whomever gets drafted next).
Seriously, I see no reason for this team to not go 9-7 this year. Maybe better than that.
GO FINS!!!

Yeah....If Coach doesn't realize Bess is the #2 wideout on this team, he's obviously on black tar heroin....

(Didn't think a "Blind" joke would be appropriate here)

However I'd prefer to see him work the slot and have Gates at the Split....Less responsibility.....Just get deep and get open.

By the way dusty, Since no one else seems to be here.

Are you sure your comments to me were warrented yesterday?

I know we do not agree on a bunch of things, but I have not changed my stance on anything I believe in on this post for years.

If anythng, if I was wrong about something, I would admit that.

But I never have flip-flopped, I love a good honest debate, and do debate until I am blue in the face, but flip-flopping is not something I do ever.

Just checking on that...

9 AND 7 TRACY, YOU SOUND LIKE A BROWN DONKY AND POSSIBLE MEMBER OF THE GANG OF DEFEAT,THE FINS WELL GOE 15 AND 1 AND CHAD HENE WILL PASS FOR 5000 YARDS AND 44 TDS, THEN IRELAND WILL HAVE TO GIVEE HIM CROWDER MONIES, AND THE CHINA MAN WHOS STUCK IN THE BAHAMAS RIGHT NOW BEING POUNDED BY A HURRCANE AND OPRAH.

bess clearly 2nd best wr, and def the smartest. gates wont do much of anything for us this year. will allens career is done. which worries me with smith on one of the corners. and henne sucks as always. i love burnett though

DUSTY,ITS DYING BRED THAT FLIP-FLOPS,THATS WHY WE NEED TO CAL HIM FISH.POIZENS ONE OF THER BETTER POSTERS HERE.

think that is actually true aloco, probaly was dying. my bad poizen

ODIN IS A HONORABLE MAN AND GREAT POASTER,A LOT OF GREAT PEOPLE WERE GREAT WRITERS BUT BIG DRUNKS,HEMMINGWAY,TWAIN JUST TOO NAME A FEW.

Still one of the funnest posts I've read in weeks.

By every projection I saw going in to the draft, D. Thomas was rated as a third rounder, at best. His biggest knocks were his lack of speed (that right there should have knocked him off their board)and his age. He was neither seen as a physical back nor a scat back/receiver, but as a "middle man" as one scout put it. Another words, 2nd or 3rd back off the bench with 10-12 carry a game capabilities. Nothing more. This regime has tagged him their guy to carry the load!! Another 2nd round bust. Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!! Hey Jeff, keep up this level of excellence and this team may soon find itsself with the first pick in the draft next year. If in fact, that does happen, please don't take a guard or defensive end, PLEASE!!!!LOL

daniel thomas put up some good numbers in college but alot of yds came against poor defenses. against syracuse in the bowl game, S.U. couldnt stop his long gains. but then again S.U. couldnt stop anyone all year. thomas doesnt look/run like a baller;another ireland mis-step among numerous others. i just dont like wasting early round picks on RB's who can be had in FA or latter rounds.

Why is Bush the only one who stays after practice?

you people who wanted Orton (career record of 5-53) are very very stupid:

http://www.denverpost.com/paige/ci_18721489?obref=obinsite

5-53? lol sure it is

I am a 40yr Dolphin fan who grew up in South Miami in 60s and saw the birth of Dolphins and now living in KC area for last 14 yrs. LJ will be a net value-add to Dolphins. He has anger issues possibly similar to Marshall's bi-polar;manic patterns of personal highs and lows. His HIGHS manifest as anger instead of happiness and tends to towards the HULK ('you will not like me when I am angry').

That being said, LJ is closer to Jim Kiick style but has Larry Csonka 'spice notes'. He naturally runs 'square and low' and he's hard to tackle; and had enough speed to outrun many LBs outside while with chiefs. He did hasten's Priest Holmes retirement. His weakness would be in passing game and blocking.

He says he's got his manic pattern under control now and if true, he could have a renaissance that would benefit Bush, Henne and Dolphins. But he has to stay healthy after being out for while. In short, again, LJ should be a BIG value-add for Dolphins.

where in kc? im in lees summit. and lj wont make the final roster

It's all good dusty, It caught me off guard so I could not let it go. :)

parcells stuck us with ireland(a GM wannabe) and our owner has complete faith in him. i guess we need to suffer for another year or two until ross wakes up and cleans house. i'm sure ross deeply regrets his NFL franchise acquisition. it really seems like we need to hire a talent evaluator like a brad childress, jim mora jr. or eric mangini to give the org a 2-3 year plan. i read that the fins and broncos deal for orton came to a stalemate over whether it would take a 3rd(bronco's wanted) or 4th(fins offered) to get orton. if that is correct, ireland screwed up again.

So many of you dummies ragging anything dolphin's you can wrap your small pea brains around.

Consider This:

While you praise the genius of the hooded one(Belichik) and debate the Jet circus come to town as better than our fo and coaching staff. You huge doom and gloomers ride only the rough waves of your very own self deranged poor me pity boats. I dont even feel empathy for you let alone sympathy.

In all of your dillusional ramblings you've totally missed the fact that the Dolphins, not Pats maybe the most improved team in the Afc East. Its surely not the Jets. They may have even taken an oh so slight step backwards this season.

The Pats were 14-2 last season. Bar is set even higher for them. Too show they're much improved the Pats need to go 16-0 in the regular season again, or at least 15-1. I highly doubt they've improved that much.

Burnett over Crowder is an astronomical defensive upgrade. Even more so considering he's now paired with Dansby. We've also made great upgrades on the offensive side of the ball.

As much as it some of your flavor of the day to hate on Henne. Common sense tells those who are fortunate enough to have common sense. It's just the natural progression of the nature of all things natural. With better overall weapons, Henne's 2011 plays naturally becomes better overall too.

Dolphins 2010 win-loss was 7-9. 2011 expect a 3-4 win increase in that total. In comparison to the Jets-Pats, I highly doubt you see an incresed win total of 3-4 games. The Pats may even win 1-2 games less than they did in 2010. I expect them to finish no better than 13-3 to 12-4. Moving backwards doesnt qualify as success folks!

DB...

instead of preaching to us all...why not address the poster's you have an issue with....with this so-called doom and gloom.....

I'll tell you who you can start with first....

The man in the mirror....because you have been among the most negative poster's in here.....PERIOD.....

You also have swing from Belicheats nuts on more than one occassion.....

So the one finger you are pointing at the blog has at least 3 more pointing at you....

signed,
Spare Me....

When the klnheo hits meidl, I'll be the first tp bkelbwe!! (belch, hiccup)

Dolphins are easily the most improved team over 2010 in the afc east. I didnt say best, but they are easily the most improved.

The Dolphins will be better able to go blow for blow with the big boys in the afc east in 2011. Mark it down on your tear-soaked calenders bumbling fools!

Kris,

Suck a dick! You always take things personal not marked for you. Kiss my a*ss! You never have to post to me again and it would never hurt my feelings. You are one of the whiniest little simple minded pink panty in white lace adolescent b1tches in this entire blog.

You no longer exist here in my mind. So dont even ever look for a reply no matter how nail scratching sissy blog feminine fighting you become.

I'm out.....

i'll leave DB to his fantasy worl were he is right...and EVERYBODY else is wrong.....

Armando...get ready for mutiple pages of blog hits....courtousey...of ole...DB.....

LOL @ DB.....LOL

db, we'll find out after the monday nighter where we stand. If we want to matter in AFC east we have to split with pats and jets.

Nothing makes a FLIP-FLOPPER madder than the truth.....LOL....

Most fans wont agree with me but I would be looking to trade Kendall Langford for a young promising TE--even though i really like him as a young player---

Bottom Line--

Starks is 2 years older, and has 1 yr left on contract---I rather have starks

Merling isnt the same player as Lagford but has talent and will be cheaper like Mcdaniel--

I rather resign Soliai over Langford he will eat up a lot of money-

Cam Wake is going to get a NEW DEAL AND ITS GOING TO BE BIG MONEY----

You can't be naive and think we can sign every1 at DLine when we also have Vontae Davis, Sean smith, Cam Wake, Jake long contracts coming up in a year or 2, and havn't spent any money yet on a future QB---Certain talented players have to walk---

Just to give you an idea of what Sean Smith and Vontae deals are going to be look at Orlando Scandrick deal and they will get more then him----he got at least 5 mill a year 10mill garunteed

I wouldnt wait so long b/c when you wait till thier last year you see how the price can rise like soliai did .

And the Good Front offices like "patriots" hated sayn that----Know when to trade Top Talent to get compensation knowning they cant resign the player.

Langford for Marcellus Bennet and a late pick i would do---lock Bennet into a 3 year contract and he wouldnt cost you more than 2-3 mill a year

While you praise the genius of the hooded one(Belichik) and debate the Jet circus come to town as better than our fo and coaching staff. You huge doom and gloomers ride only the rough waves of your very own self deranged poor me pity boats. I dont even feel empathy for you let alone sympathy.

NOBODY WAS MORE GUILTY OF THIS THAN YOU MY FRIEND. ONLY SINCE ABOUT A MONTH ABOUT YOU'VE FLIP FLOPPED FROM NEGATIVE GLOOMY HATER TO LOVER. TALK ABOUT A HYPOCRITICAL POST. THIS WON WINS THE PRIZE!

Kris,

Suck a dick! You always take things personal not marked for you. Kiss my a*ss!

Posted by: DyingBreed | August 25, 2011 at 12:33 PM

JUST WHO IS TAKING THINGS PERSONAL HERE? HYPOCRITE POST OF THE YEAR #2.

Hey idiot posters and you know who you are. Im not fighting with you dumbasses today. Fools cant be corrected. If this were possible you wouldnt be fools! LOL...

A fool will never correct himself. Correct yourself in the eyes of fools and they consider it foolish! LOL....

Fools always consider CORRECTION foolish. That's why they are considered fools! LOL...

DB is hostile again today. He should spend some time (even 3 minutes) with a pretty girl before coming to post on the blog.

Fools are foolish just for the sake of being a fool! LOL...

Fools always consider correction as being hostility. Nothing threatens a fool more than correction laid at his door step. LOL...

How anyone can measure 'improved' before the season even starts is beyond me. Thats why they play the games.

Fools always consider correction as being hostility. Nothing threatens a fool more than correction laid at his door step. LOL...

WELL BY YOUR OWN DEFINITION YOU ARE A FOOL. SEE BELOW:

Suck a dick! You always take things personal not marked for you. Kiss my a*ss!

Because fools are blind. Fools travel in darkness. Its blasphemy for a fool to open his eyes to the light and actually see the path he travels.

Fools are only confortable when they stumble around in the darkness. This is a fools delight. This is a fools paradise. A fool is afraid the light will blind him. Not that he's already being blinded by darkness! LOL...

FTW,

One and only reply to you:

A fool's reward is to be chastise in wrath. That is the fool's crown of glory. Chastise a fool and ride away in the wind. A fool will never know wisdom came to visit! LOL...

My Dear Fellow Dolphins Fans, Is Miami Your ami?

I can see some of you fools on judgement day:

Master, you never gave us wisdom thats why we were fools.

Then the Master says:

I visited wisdom upon you countless upon countless times. But instead you "chose" to revel in the darkness you fool!

LOL...

This is the guy we passed over Mallett to draft and traded UP for?

Andy CT Dol-Fan,

Dolphins are my greatest football preference, not my love. The greatest gift anyone associated Dolphins can give me are football bragging rights.

They'll never pay a bill, house, clothe, or feed me. In memorabilia alone I've already made a far greater capital investment in them than they'll ever consider making in me. As fans we need learn to put our sports fantasia into proper perspective.

WHERE DOES IT SAY TYPING 'LOL' AFTER A COMMENT MAKES YOU NOT LOOK LIKE THE BIGGEST HYPOCRITE HERE?

YOU ARE THE ONE OUT TO LUNCH MY FRIEND. UNNECESSARILY HOSTILE TOO. AS YOU SAY, FOOLS LIKE YOU DON'T LIKE TO BE CORRECTED.

NUF SAID.

Im out. This blog is more fool's folly than follow your team to find reason to be jolly.

Have a great day wise fan and fool fan alike! LOL...

Russ,

Thomas is finding out that in the NFL the linebackers are bigger than he is, so he's having second thoughts about lowering his pads and busting up there. It's not like in college where he was bigger than some D-linemen. Either he adjusts or he'll be the next Pat White.

Breed is out.
Yea!

A thankful blogger,

A fool always celebrates when wisdom departs! Yet a fool never percieves when it may return. LOL...

Wisdom compounds a fool. Wisdom is a fool's greatest calamity. Its like lesions of sores upon his foolish flesh! LOL...
