« Dolphins sign DL Igor Olshansky | Main | Dolphins close but not quite there in the red zone »

... Then the other shoe drops on roster-churn Tuesday

Yes, Igor Olshansky fills the need at DE. But what about the defensive back discussed in the last post?

Re-enter Nate Jones.

The Dolphins have signed Jones, who played on the team from 2008-2009, to fill that spot. Jones was cut by Denver earlier this season.

His addition is interesting because it speaks to the uncertainty the team has over the hamstring injury to cornerback Vontae Davis.

If Davis cannot play against Cleveland, the Dolphins will pick among Will Allen or Nolan Carroll as the starter. And then they'll decide whom to play at nickel between the Carroll-Allen non-starter and Jones.

To make room for all of today's predictable moves, the Dolphins cut both Larry Johnson and TE Dante Rosario.

So in summary: Add Nate Jones and Igor Olshansky. Delete Larry Johnson and Dante Rosario from your collective minds. All of the additions are patchwork meant to fill in holes. This isn't make-the-team-better stuff. This is more let's-not-let-the-team-get-worse stuff.

Onward to Wednesday's start of weekly preparations.

Mando,

Thought Sparano was an o-line coach?

How come Reggie Bush had 18 YDs rushing and we lost AGAIN @ home?

Bunch Of Phooken Azzes!

Anyone who thinks this team is moving forward need a full lobotomy. We're not even failing fast forward like Cam Cam-moron would put it!

Wake up dolfans we're moving backwards in slow motion. Is there an instant replay camera for that?

Petition: Fire Ross (sell the team! to a more competant owner), Ireland and Sparano.

Here we come Andrew Luck!and 15 years of success.

Please stop all the Gruden and Cowher talk. It's non sense!

They're both beneficiaries of circumstance(Dungy/Rooney's respectively. In addition they have become jaded and washed up by their cush jobs since leaving the NFL.

Q: What COACH(or anybody else for that matter)has EVER came back from the booth or studio and been competitive of relevent in the NFL?

A: 0 - Absolutely NO ONE! Gruden and Cowher specifically would never be able to overcome their over inflated ego's enough to EVER be able to Coac a team, let alone be in charge of personel decisions!

If you're not going to give a young up and commer a shot and you have to go with a name type of guy, think Fisher or Singletary.

They both are still hungry and have major chips on their shoulders that will fuel their DRIVE to suceed!

Gruden and Cowher on the other hand have become much to satisfied resting on past abberations of greatness(in laymens terms: Their a sses)and running their mouths instead of their brains.

This is bad...real bad...I hope they play with a little energy this week.

Couldnt the Shulas, Marino, former players, and some real deep pocket fans put together a syndicate and rescue this once proud franchise?

Guys Im being realistic, I dont think this franchise will ever win again as long as Steven Ross is owner.

Did old man Ford die? The Lions finally look like a winner.

Ross is the most incompetant owner in the NFL and etc. This once proud franchise is more and more rediculous.

Hennes game to stats do not suggest much to admire:

12/30 attempts (well under 50%)
170 yards
5.7 avg
1 td
1 int
56.2 passer rating

Please don't make me go back to a week ago when you yourself and your other alias posted that stats don't mean squat.

You know as well as the rest of EVERYBODY here, that Henne indeed played well enough to win against both the Pats and the Texans.

Those PARTICULAR stats aren't much to look at. However, more importantly, he made crucial plays keeping drives alive with his legs and simply played well enough for this supposed "TEAM" to win. Winning after all trumps stats everyday of the week and twice on Sunday!

While even I admit that he struggles in the red zone, it doesn't erase the facts that he has consistantly(especially against the Texans) put us in position to win-PERIOD!

The leadership was always in question the coach was getting replaced in the off season and then got an extension because they couldn't reach a deal with his replacement.
That basically told the players we do not believe in your coach so why should they. This organization has lost the respect of the fans that supported it through thick and thin and now are fed up with what is put on the field.
I want football people back in the Dolphin front office not some rich business man who is more into entertainment than winning games.

You know your owner's senile(Ford) when he lets his GM(Matt Millen) spend 3 straight #1 picks on wr's!

Lions are better, so that only leaves one other owner(Al Davis) arguably worse than Ross.

Stats mean squat, unless they support my argument :)

Look, Henne gave up points too. The red zone thing can't be blamed on someone else EVERY time. I'll give him a B+ for game one and a C for game 2.

Our improved chunk yardage game only means we can now move into the red zone to fail faster and more often!

LOL................................................................

How come Dante Rosario was the guy chopped? I mean I'm not really a fan of this guy but was he REALLY the worst guy on this roster? Didn't he at least represent someone who could run down the field and get open? I mean I didn't love this guy when they signed him and didn't believe the hype that some guys were spewing on here but aren't there other guys that should have been chopped first?

Once we cross the opponents 50yd line we need to be throwing for the endzone. Odds are once we reach the opponents 25yd line we wont get anything anyway!

LOL..................................................................

What we gain in chunk yards we lose in time of possession, which only gives more time for other QB's to have fun passing against our corners.

Jesus Christ, what a bunch of negative doomsday a holes. Yeah we have issues but we are two games in for gods sake. We competed in both games. Look at kansas city if you want futility. Rob in oc, you are an ass btw.

Sparano talks up every single bum he adds to this team. He has to validate those bad moves some way. Then a week or two later the bum gets cut.

If he gets cuts a week or two later wasnt he a bad addition to begin with? So Tony why are you always talking these bums up just so that you can cut them a few weeks later? This only makes you look like an idiot! LOL...

After Nolan Carroll's performance the last two games, he should be deactivated. Why is he even on this team?

Ross's biggest mistakes here was in not following through in his coaching search. He also screwed it up in hanging SpOrano out to dry. Big deal, EVERYONE of you want SpOrano replaced RIGHT NOW! Big deal, had Harbaugh not turned him down, we'd all be better off. At least he(unlike the trifecta)was trying to IMPROVE his investment!

Other than that, what has he done thats so bad? Getting fleeced by Wayne and Parcells and buying an absolutely putrid team? Yeah, but he was following the advice of the supposed biggest names out there. Like us, he didn't think this team was as putrid as it is.

Ross has opened his wallet FULLY and stayed out of the way! Even though it's ignorant, he even tried(listened to dumbshyts like Dee)to enhance the fan experience. Of course had the team not turned out so putrid, even this move would have been welcomed by he Dolts.

Yeah, the nerve of Ross to pay for the biggest names out there(Parcells, Marshall, Dansby).

Ross ain't the problem-PERIOD!

When Porter spoke up and made promises, we always lost that game.

When Crowder spoke up and made promises, we always lost that game.

When Vontae spoke up, well you know the rest...

Oh, and Tony spoke at the luncheon to tell the crowd they should be enthused because we are going to win. He never said what we'd win though.

DevilsAdvocate,

Whatever amount of time we have the ball may as well be credited to the opponent time of possession when we move into the red zone and get nada. Its just like we never had the ball anyway!

Odin @ 8:41,

Wow! You have the staying power of a true Norseman!

When you see nothing but green pastures and Unicorns I see fields of dandelions and just cow patties and flies where the heard has moved on.

I do respect your ironclad faith in Henne much like a non believer watching the church's flock makes sense of tongues.

He threw for a bunch of yards and seems to be slimmer (and thus able to bolt fairly spryliy when the situation presents itself)...but I want ACCURACY from our QB. Not just sometimes, not just for cosmetic reasons but most of the time.

I know we are on opposite sides of the spectrum on the whole Henne debate and I will always respect your opinion, invite your blog football insight and right to sound off for what you believe in.

It just seems as though you think I will be bitching about Henne even if he pilots us deep into the playoffs just as I think if we lose most every game you will be pointing to every facet of the team BESIDES Henne.

Time will tell but this is the guys 4rth season... It appears NE's Def is not that good and Houston was beatable.

Henne got 100+ yards out of RB Daniels and what was Henne's final numbers to power his team to victory on his back?

Hat tip to you Odin

Cheers!

Ross was probably behind the Bush deal. If not, he has one more reason to fire these clowns.

A New Orleans writer said of Bush...every time he gets the ball we go Ahhhhhhh, and at the end of the play we go, oh.

Relax everyone. We all know that what we need to get us over the hump is a defensive or offensive lineman in the first round. Seriously, our offense is what is - the result of drafting defense, trading high picks for quarterbacks and running backs that do not work out, and offensive linemen. Miami has drafted only four wide receivers since 1997 in the top three rounds, and people question why there is a lack of speed and dynamism.

Robert and DB,

Your comments on Ross are ridiculous.

-Ross opened his wallet and stayed out of the office! He left all football decisions up to Parcells. Hello, that's what you want in an owner. Deep pockets and stay out of the way. Parcells and his merry band of idiots screwed the pooch!

Lions are better, so that only leaves one other owner(Al Davis) arguably worse than Ross.

DB, see above-LOL!

Odin,

Your post is just further proof Ross is an idiot to me. Why the hell would anyone make a billion dollar investment into something they dont have a truly accurate gauge on?

Only an idiot would do that. Fleeced for a billion dollars! LOL...

Its obvious we are in a panic and desperation mode. As for the fans, we have to wait too long from season to season. We the fans pretty much know what are the obvious problems and concerns with this team. I for one think Sporano is not head coach material, Jeff Ireland is on his own and has no clue on bringing talent to the team. I don't know if its Ross telling him not to spend largely, buy when they pay $12 million for Soliai, and $43 million for Dansby, I guess they do want to spend money just not wisely. First Sporano must go. They need to talk with Jeff Fischer and pay him a fair amount to bring him in. As for Henne, He is not our franchise QB but its too late now until next year. The O-line though, now there is where a big problem exists. Do whatever it takes to fix it immediately or we can easily go 0-16 this year. The only problem is that it might be too late also, who is out there that we can bring. Maybe move Pouncey to left guard, Incog to right guard, go and get O'hara for your center, and maybe tade something for a right tackle? I don't know but something better get done fast because with the defense given up so many yards and big plays, you better have an offense that can score big time.

Looks like "Suck for Luck" is in full effect!

Shaggy...our team IS this bad man, there is no way around it...doesn't matter that it's two games in the books...there is no hope for this FO and team man...

The point of your post was that his stats weren't much to be admired. I didn't argue with that.

You're also right that you can't blame everything on someone else.

However, my main pint was that regardless of all the stats, blame and biases, Henne has been out TEAM MVP and played well enough for us to beat two very good teams and go 2-0.

That simply cannot be refuted and pretty much trumps all.

PS: Don't get all shook up, we're just HONESTLY debating here ;)

Its not just that its only 2 games in the book. Its a books we've read the past 3-4yrs and we all know how the story ends. Usually 7-9!

LOL............................................................

MIKE MAYOCK FOR GM!!!!!!!

Rob in OC.

Very astute and diplomatic!

Always a pleasure my friend!

My eyes see it differently. A better QB and we could have won those games. If Henne played well enough to win, me thinks we would have won.

Easy does it, I'm shaken.

A Real 4yr Plan:

Year 1- Roster turnover

Year 2- .500 football

Year 3- Playoffs

Year 4- Championship contender

What Happened In Miami:

Year 1- Afc title

Year 2- 7-9(Below .500)

Year 3- 7-9(Below .500)

Year 4- Looks exactly like Years 2 and 3. Could be worse.

afc east title

Lets see, how to make the team better??hmm, get rid of sparano and company, add darren sharper to year deal, dump Colombo, bring in David Garrard, make Henne the back up, draft luck with whatever it takes.

DevilsAdvocate,

Henne's playing better, it just isnt happening in the redzone where it matters most. You can paint a clunker. But painting it alone doesnt make it run any better.

At least with Henning we never felt like we were in the game. Now we feel like we can win, should win, will win....but we lose.

LOL-Take a valium and pay attention! Just kidding :)

I agree that a Manning or a Rodgers would "most likely" have pulled those games out for us.

There's no question that Henne's not getting to that level anytime soon.

But still, you have to admit that Henne has been outplaying his teammates and with the tiniest amount of support from anywhere, we win those two games with Henne at the Helm!

DevilsAdvocate,

To Henne's defense I will say the entire team's making the exact same boneheaded plays theyve made in the past. Offense, defense, and st's. This doesnt make Henne's job any easier either.

We're not going to win very many games until the entire team stop shooting itself in the foot. Jeff Ireland and Tony Sparano included!

Excellent post DB. I do believe we can confidently conclude that we've done it EXACTLY back-a ss-wards :)

did anyone say Gruden? Jeff Fisher? Bill cowher? David Garrard? Trade the team for Andrew Luck and build around him again

Can we trade Long and colombo for andrew luck first rn pick next year?!..throw in sparano and ireland too, henne too whay not

This pretty much proves this regime has failed. Some still wonder why the seats are now vastly empty in Miami stadium.

The people in the city of Miami are not total idiots. Thier saving thier money for basketball season. Just in case there is one! LOL...

Posted by: odinseye | September 20, 2011 at 09:51 PM

This I will agree with.

SHOOT they sure gave up on Rosario quickly..Nate Jones is a good special team player and blitzer but he does not have the speed to play corner anymore...Igor Olshansky is a guy to push Solai cause he's been playing like he did 2 years ago...When those 2 players got cut from Dallas i knew it was a matter of time they would be here..And sure enough more Cowboys' cause Ireland knows them.nest up..Tashard Choice Marcellus Bennett etc...That still shows how this guy is still learning the NFL..What can you do but as a fan is hope 4 the best!

Year 4 and we're still shooting ourselves in the foot! LOL...

This fo spends more time trying to fix mistakes than adding real talent. At this rate theyll need 8yrs(twice as long) to bring winning football to Miami! LOL................

I guess I'll be collecting my SSI by the time we're a playoff team again! LOL...

good move

BLACKEROTE,

Your post is further proof Ireland thinks he's still in the 1st yr of rebuilding. Counting on Cowboys and other team reject to shore up key starting positions.

He's still making moves you only make when turning over a terrible roster. Thats why this team's slowly moving backwards not forward.

I do not know what really is going on with this team's upper management. I am beginning to think there is a conspiracy of some sort going on, but why? Is someone (Jeff Ireland) getting greased on the side to put a mediocre product on the field? Is Sporano trying to pay back Ross for the embarassement during the pre-season? Why do we continue to bring ex-Cowboy rejects? I have always said that Vontae Davis is a bust of some sort, he really is not that great. Why didn't we go after a proven cornerback in free agency? What, the Eagles have a higher salary cap than the Fins? WHy is it that we have missed out on obvious picks like Bryant Mckinnie? Depth at inside linebacker is weak. Why do we keep getting rid of good players like we did with WES Welker and now with AJ Edds so that smart teams like the Pats get them and they become pro-bowlers? I just don't understand. Or is that Ireland is just simply so dumb?

I'm not even sure how good the players we have assembled are. Those who say we are close...well being close to a winner is being close to a loser too.

How often has this team played up to our expectations? The FO for sure needs to go, but not sure how many of these players the new regime will keep.

Who cares about the MVP on a crap team? WHAT LOSER TALK! He's better than the other bums. YIPPIE!

WOW! He threw for 400 on 50 throws LOSING by double digits the ENTIRE GAME, YIPPIE!

In a close loss, throws for less than 50% & less than 200.

MVP!!!!!!!!!!!! You people are a JOKE!

WHY NOT BRING REJECTS FROM OTHER TEAMS?

Vontae Davis greatest knock in college was "UNDER ACHIEVER". Yet we made him our #1 draft pick anyway.

We now see the under achiever label was fair. Since becoming a Dolphin he's had few games of looking like an all pro. Then games of looking like an undrafted free agent.

Sparano sold us all of this bs how Sean Smith being a former wr was going to make all of these plays on the football.

Instead we found out why in college he didnt last long as a wr! LOL...

This reminds me of the bad fantasy draft year when I kept scraping the waiver wire
