One of the questions that remains unanswered on the eve of the Miami Dolphins' regular-season opener is how effective rookie running back Daniel Thomas will be and how much the club will need backup-to-the-backup Larry Johnson behind him.
The reason this is important is the Dolphins cannot hope to rely on Reggie Bush to carry the football 25 times per game, regardless of what anyone in the organization insists. The second reason this is important is that Thomas didn't have a good preseason.
The third reason is the Dolphins didn't really want either Ricky Williams or Ronnie Brown back this season.
We'll soon see about Thomas, who is listed as questionable with a hamstring injury for tomorrow's game against New England. I would estimate that even if he is active for the game, the Dolphins cannot be completely sure he'll be able to finish. So I would expect Larry Johnson to be active. It will work as insurance in case Thomas suffers another tweak to his hamstring.
Meanwile, both Brown and Williams have moved on and have already begun their 2011 seasons. They've done it with different degrees of success.
Ronnie Brown rushed four times for 7 yards in his Philadelphia Eagles debut.
Ricky Williams gained 63 yards on 12 carries, including a 26-yard run for the Baltimore Ravens.

Capt. Kirk, I would be surprised if Craig himself didn't make some evaluations based on what he saw from some rookies in preseason, let alone game one. We all do.
With that being said, gotta give Cam Newton props. He looked good in that game. If that was a Dolphin rookie qb we would be thinking we hit the jackpot.

Tracy youre as good as your last practice.
Posted by: redsky | September 11, 2011 at 10:03 PM
kirk,
I wasn't referring to you. There were other people on here that were all hot and heavy about Cam Newton today. Go back and read.

Craig, don't argue with him, he forgot for a second which name he posted what under.

Signal
Yes, I was surprised he looked so comfortable in the pocket. I could care less who the defense was, it was his very first game. He threw the ball very well too and very accurate. I expect he will have his struggles sure, but he really looks to me like he will be the real deal with some experience.
Posted by: kirk | September 11, 2011 at 10:06 PM
Newton had a good 1st game, for a rookie, let's see what he does the rest of the season! Against tougher defenses!

Odin,
Does he do that? Another one of these guys who likes to play that game? I just don't get the attraction in playing those games. Is it split personality or something? Somebodies got to explain the attraction to me some time.
This game is draggin'....I'm going to disappear and watch it....cheers guys!

Vicodin!!!!
Posted by: redsky | September 11, 2011 at 10:08 PM
Just read an article on ESPN's site where they say that Miami has a shot of a play-off berth. Their Outsider's Almanac gives the Fins an average of 8.3 wins this year, making it a possibility of making it into the post-season.
GO FINS!!!

Just one last question? Are you under 15? Because you sure act like it. If you are expecting to never hear a contrary opinion then either don't blog or just respond to those that agree with you.
Posted by: kirk | September 11, 2011 at 10:10 PM
It's pretty simple, the FO like many others before them saw RB a higher priority than QB by taking Thomas over Mallet. it felt like a mistake at the time, I hope it doesn't prove to be one
Posted by: Albertan Dolfan | September 11, 2011 at 10:10 PM
If your a Dolphin fan and your watching a Jets game and they are not playing the Dolphins then yes I do recommend drugs to help ease the pain

Nice play!
Posted by: redsky | September 11, 2011 at 10:11 PM
Kirk...I was very impressed with the play of Cam Newton today. I don't know what he will be going forward. I know today what he did had NEVER been done before. That says something. The whole team was energized by his presance. Even is a loss, the team has to have more belief then say is Jimmy Clausen was behind center. The Panthers didn't score 3 touchdowns in a game once last season. To be a rookie in your first start, on the road, with a shortened pre-season. Like him, or hate him.
What Newton did today should give the Panthers, and their fans a litttle glimpse of hope.

We're watching the only game on tonight because 1) We play both of these teams this year and can scout out the strengths and weaknesses of both. 2) As Dolphin's fans we love to see our rivals (Jets) get their butts whipped. 3) The Jets are in our division and we like to keep up on all of the AFC East teams...and 4) As football fans, we love football and it's the only game on!
GO FINS!!!

Posted by: redsky | September 11, 2011 at 10:23 PM
Darryl yeah that was my take on it. I didn't expect he would have that much poise right away, I expected him to be jumpy and nervous, he seemed in control for the most part. I will tell you after watching that one game, I'd take him over Kolb any day.
Posted by: kirk | September 11, 2011 at 10:26 PM
