Bush-Thomas package on the way? Looks like it

On Sunday night I asked coach Tony Sparano if the team could find a way to get both Daniel Thomas and Reggie Bush in the game during games in which Thomas is the hot hand as the running back.

The idea, obviously, is that Bush is a potentially dynamic player and it would be a waste to have him on the sideline serving as a spectator while Thomas runs the football. I figured, find a way to use him as a third-down guy. Use him as a punt returner. Use them both in the backfield and perhaps move him out to the slot -- thus forcing the defense to defend Bush with their base unit.

But coach wasn't buying any of that. He said what we saw is basically the way things are.

"Reggie‟s role is where Reggie is," Sparano answered. "Thomas was going good today, you know, and that‟s where we were. It was that kind of game. It worked out good."

Well, today things are a bit different.

First of all, Sparano just told the media that Thomas was in for 33 plays while Bush was in for 25 plays. I know, it sure didn't feel like that. But those are the stats the coach repeated.

Then he said the club actually has a package that includes both Bush and Thomas and that they used it some Sunday. The problem was, he said, that with Thomas an uncertainty because of his recent injuries, the package is admittedly small.

Well, here's the deal: You should look for that package to expand. It has to happen if Dolphins coaches saw what everyone else did. It has to happen to use as many good players as possible at the same time. Makes sense.

Yes, you can be critical of the Dolphins for not being ready with an extensive package for both players versus Houston. But, again, the team's stated plan was to use Bush 70 percent of the time and Thomas about 30 percent. They didn't foresee Thomas having a breakout day while Bush continued to struggle on his runs.

And now my opinion:

I've seen enough of the Dolphins pushing Bush as a carry-the-load guy. He's not that guy. He's never been that guy. Bush is a fine talent. He's a matchup problem for base defenses. So use him that way. Use him closer to the way the Saints did.

And let the bigger back carry the load.

Seems like a good way to maximize both. Maybe even at the same time.

I swear this is Armando who alias is "Yeah!" there now way it isn't Armando we know its you cut it out!

I am sick of the disappointing play by the Phins year in and year out. As any of you know, if you read my usual comments, I am a diehard Phins fan and usually stay positive. However, this game should have been won. We beat ourselves and the play calling still needs to improve before this team starts to win. How many years do we need to be disappointed by losing seasons? When will this change? If we lose against Cleveland, I will be totally Disappointed. This team is good enough to have a winning season. They lack swagger and confidence. They don't have that X factor. Something's gotta change.

Mando, you're right to press Tony. Same problem, Dolphins are slow to react and adjust during the Season. I think they feel like it means they don't know what they're doing. When in reality, doing it their way, proves THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING! Other teams have already figured this stuff out. Miami is still learning things other teams already know.

Perfect example. Nolan Carroll has NO BUSINESS covering Andre Johnson, NONE! So, why didn't they adjust? Also, on the Johnson TD that was a miscue. HOW? You have a backup, covering the best WR in football, how does the Safety NOT know that and help defend? If you watch, Jones was up in what looked like run blocking. REALLY? Is that the problem with this defense this year, or is it pass protection by the secondary? Weren't we told Jones is a ballhawk (that's why he's starting)? Has ANYONE seen him even in the picture when a ball has been thrown to guy he's covering? I see him YARDS away, nowhere close. What's the scheme their running? For YEARS, teams have completed big plays against Miami. When are we going to play back, just in case someone gets behind a CB? When will a Safety actually play, you know, SAFETY? Instead of an extra LB. When will we see that?

Again, everyone knows the problem. Fans even offer suggestions. Fall on deaf ears. Coaches know best. Just do what they're doing. Mediocrity. Time after time.

Need more screens and slot situations with Bush..........and keep running with Thomas, see if he can continue this

"Devils advocate" is also "Ireland sucks". I was having a conversation with Ireland sucks the other day and low and behold I responded to him but Devils Advocate answered me as if I was speaking directly to him. Baaaaaaaammmmmmmmm!

Wrong. You are either high on drugs or paranoid. Just because you think you are right does not mean you are right, as with this erroneous accusation. It's a blog, all posts go to all bloggers. I don't pay so much attention who is posting to who, I just jump in on what I am reading. Do you come here to debate or find a bunch of bloggers to worship everything you say?

A note to the others:

This blog has so few people that can handle any kind of a debate. Many of you are more touchy sensitive than a teenage girl with PMS. It's tiring having to listen to half of you accuse every blogger you disagree with of being someone else, a troll, or a jet fan.

I passed by this blog shortly a couple of months back and didn't bother because it was mostly a cesspool of comments. It did get a little better once the season started. If you really want to attract good bloggers here and not diaper babies like LouD, then try being a tad more open minded and not so hair trigger sensitive to call names and make accusations over any little thing that seems contrary to your idea of a dolphin fan.

It seems like many of you just want to blog with only those that agree with you and then discredit and giggle at everyone else. Well, all I can say is good luck having anything more than a diaper club blog with that mentality. I find myself questioning why I even continue posting here, so I imagine others have too and are long gone.

On the positive side, there really is some good debate here, knowledgeable bloggers with good insights who are capable of having a challengng debate without getting their hairdo in a tizzy. I'd like to see that become more of the majority than the minority.

I agree with Mando.
The Thomas-Pouncey run up the middle combo looks like it can be a good one.
Bush belongs in the flat and running screens.

Top 5 things I like about the "Yeah" guy:

1) Consistency of purpose.

2) He tells it like it is.

3) Despite his Social Democratic roots, he sees the folly of Keynsianism and the crowding out effect of excessive government spending.

4) He appreciates that ultimately there is no freedom without the law.

5) He can win without making you lose.

By the way, go back a couple days. After last week's game, I said, "look at the Pats, they don't just run up the middle out of the "i" formation. They do delayed handoffs (like Shotgun), stunts, sweeps, etc."

When we do that (happened all game yesterday), hey, lookie there, we got similar results (our rookie RB runs for over 100 yards).

Guys, I appreciate those of you who think I'm knowledgeable. But I want to admit to you, I'm not. I just watch football. Never played organized football, never Coached it. I just watch. But from watching I've seen a lot.

What I'm saying is this isn't rocket science. It's not something a genius could figure out. It's something you'd think a Coach, watching all that tape, could see clearly. Daboll made that good adjustment, and it worked out favorably. They just need to do that everyone on the team. Make these adjustments, not before it's too late, but mid-game if possible. Don't wait for the next game, do it now. You have nothing to lose. Find a system, find a way. Don't just accept a loss.

Bush is a dynamic player when put in positions where he can prosper. He is not an every down between the tackles back as we have already witnessed. When he can play from the slot or run outside, he can really make some great plays.

So what kind of offense are these coaches trying to create here? Are they a passing team? If so, where are all the pass-catchers and a QB who can throw with consistency? Are they a clock-chewing ground-based team? If so, why go into the season with a rookie and a third down specialty back as your ball carriers? What is the point here? All I see is an offense incapable of getting past the 20 yard line and that can't gain a tough few yards when it matters.

Don't ask Stammerin' Sparano those questions, though, because all you'll get is "duh, der, duh, I dunno, saw some good things out there, gotta get 'em next week, der, duh, der". This guy and his whole staff are inept losers, keeping them around for another year was a huge, huge mistake. This team won't win more than four games, if that.

Does anyone think our people in charge have a clue about judging talen?..off. line poor running backs poor...QB poor wide receivers over paid and average at best...Def. line..average at best..ilb..poor...olb fair...cb..poor..safety very bad...not many starters here...must start over on another 4 yr plan

Cowboys away fans are much louder than Dolphin home fans. Ross needs to have seats painted like Dolphin fans so it doesn't look so freaking empty on tv.

It's always the most unexpected disappointments that get me. Who expected Carpenter to whiff on 2 Fg's? Who expected to have Nolan Carrol and Reshad Jones on Andre Johnson! ANDRE JOHNSON! Get those two guys as far from Johnson as possible.
Meh... At least Thomas showed up like he wanted to play and Henne made some really nice throws, but then guess what? Marshall drops another pass in the endzone! Unexpected man.

aqua, agreed. They have an identity-crisis. The OC is pulling them one way (in the right way IMHO), but the HC is from a different place.

I really don't know if changing HC's AGAIN is the answer, but in the long run, I think we have a better chance of being an elite team with a HC who HAS A SYSTEM. Who knows what he wants and just does it not caring what anyone says (like Shanahan in DC). And if it doesn't work, they you know who to fire, since it was all the HC's plan. Sparano's not that guy. He's a soldier, a trenches guy. He's not the brain. We need a brain at the head of our team.

I'd settle for the "new" Detroit Lions.

Chris in 623, not sure what you're saying. I thought Cowboys away fans WERE Dolphins fans?

DC Dolfan, who ever said they thought you were knowledgeable?? I mean really? Most of what you say is common sense, nothing different or intelligent about it. Sorry, just being honest. Your comments are the same as saying the sky is blue. We already know that and any idiot can look up and see that.

the only thing that the Dolphins are missing is more rejects from the cowboys....get on it ireland!!!

I really want to see a complete turnaround next week. It's an away game and that could be a momentum and confidence change for this team if we come away with a big W!

All those screaming for a change at the top by the bye week forget it. We can 0 for and Ross will not make a change. That requires courage and intelligence to make that call. When have either of those traits been exhibited concerning the 'Phins??

I mean if the stadium is half empty in the 2nd game of the season against a tough AFC team whom we have never beaten, how's it going to look week 7 against Denver if we're 1-4 or 0-5? Guess a few hundred Tebow fans will show up.

Scallywag, obviously you weren't in that conversation (or saw it), but just on the last blog, some poster said in black and white, "hey DC, you sound pretty knowledgeable." Others have said that to me in the past. So, they are the ones who said that.

And the fact that "any idiot" can see that was actually the point of my statement. That if I (substitute your "any idiot") can see that, why can't our Coaches?

But thanks for asking me why I made the point you made in commenting on my point. Guess maybe that makes you "any idiot" as well. Join the club.

sparano a trench guy..please...he cant coach high school off. line

dolphans..have no chance with Irland and Sparano....

See Mando, you get it. We get it. But Sparano doesn't? He has to go & soon. If I'm Ross I'm on the phone with Gruden or Cowher seeing if they could function with the coordinators Mismi has. No need to see how this season will play out.. It will be horrible.

lets go for new olens off. cord as our head coach

"Our coach has led the team to two straight very disappointing seasons that have shown very little positive progress. Let's stick with him, maybe he'll get better. Our QB has led the team to two very disappointing seasons and has shown little positive progress. Let's stick with him, maybe he'll get better. Every good team in the NFL is throwing the ball with total abandon. Let's focus on the ground game, maybe that's the ticket". Maybe, what-if, perhaps, hopefully, "saw some good things out there", it's all loser talk. The GM and HC are responsible for looking at the direct competition and saying "here's what we need to do to compete with those teams". Ours are not doing that at all. They're grasping for "answers" four years into the project and not finding any.

I swear this is Armando who alias is "Yeah!" there now way it isn't Armando we know its you cut it out!

It has to be. Mando probably just got tired of people idiotically putting #1 as a first comment and preemptively started doing it himself. If it's not I don't know what kind of loser sits around 24/7 waiting for a blog post so he can comment with an insipid "#1" as a first comment.

I personally applaud the local fans for not showing up. The team has no leadership or direction. Mandolin said earlier, we have playmakers that just aren't making plays. Well, that's coaching. Sparano is a loser, always one step behind. I feel no pity for that man. You may talk me that he's trying to feed his family, trying to work. Well he's made millions, he's fine. He's had enough time making my favourite team a non factor. Time for him to go and take Ireland with you too.

Columbia as your #1house plan at rt going into the season. Geez, who couldn't see that wouldn't work?

Why Didn't You Ask Him To Leave Us Alone ?

I'm resigned to the fact that Sparano is going to get fired and with him Henne will be gone because the new guy will want his won QB. To all the people caling for change now, you're nuts!! For what? So we can limp to a 6-10 or 7-9 finish? Why? No, if you guys are right about these guys then we're heading for a 4-12 finish and that's what a lot of you want. I doubt that will be good enough to get Andrew Luck but maybe we'll be fortunate enough to be able to trade up with a team like the Panthers or Bengals. At the very least maybe we get a guy like Landry Jones. Regardless, I want us to sink or swim with the guys we've got. This team will quit on the coach if the going gets too tough and I think we can bank on that happening. I didn't expect them to beat the first two teams they played this season. Both teams are better teams on paper. I haven't thought enough about Cleveland yet but I also think they are going to be in tough. Only bonus might be that it's a road game.

Listen we just need to bring in MR. CHUCK NORRIS! HMMMMMM????

Mark in Toronto, it's Colombo not Columbia.

It really isn't rocket science to have bush and thomas on the field at the same time...us fans blogged about it weeks ago...yet Sparano is now just saying that he had a small package available. This is one if the problems with our coaching...a day late and a dollar short...4 years in a row of it too...

DC....who thinks your knowledgeable.....lol

Mando, I assumed that was the plan all along. that's why we drafted thomas. with Bush we have a playmaker and thomas the primary back. I don't understand what there is to disagree on.

Morono and Ireland have no vision and no clue about what they are doing! Also Morono for what ever reason does not make in game adjustments... Mr. Ross needs to wake up and bring in a real coach and a real GM already!

Haha!! Exactly Kris. I love when people toot their own horns...get over yourself. You are clueless. Hahahahaha!!!

CraigM...the only problem on waiting and relying on another team to make a trade with us to get luck is this...it's either going to cost way too much in personnel and draft picks to get to the number one spot..and/or the team that gets to the first spot next draft whom doesnt have a franchise QB is NOT going to give luck up for any amount of compensation...they will say sorry but we are not letting him slip by because he could solidify our franchise not yours. If you want or need something that bad as we do...you never rely on another person or team to help you out...you go out and do it yourself!

The ONLY thing - and I mean the ONLY thing - that is making this heretofore disaster of a season somewhat tolerable is the frustration expressed by all you commenters. I really do get a kick out of all scribblings of the know-it-alls and haters. I don't mean that as a criticism. I'm frustrated, too. You guys are just so entertaining. Your passion is exquisite.

We lost this game due to poorly executed redzone plays, and a defense that is for some flipping reason unconditioned. Had those two areas been solid we should have came out of there with an 1-1 record. Purely my opinion but pretty factual!

Let's stop attacking each other and get together as fans. Go PHINS!!!

This Cleveland game is turning out to bigger than I could have imagined.......the defense won't have the excuse of playing against powerful offenses like the Patriots, so if they are going to be considered good at any point they should be able to contend.........I think if we lose to Cleveland things could really get ugly from there.....I will always stay loyal to my phins though

Assuming Ireland and Sparano will be gone by the end of the season, here are other individuals I think may be in jeapardy.

1. Marc Colombo: he should have gone along with Sapp
2. Incognito and Carey: I have no doubt next season will mean another OLine overhaul and these two will be in question
3. Reshard Jones
4. Nolan Carroll
5. Dan Carpenter
6. Fasano: this league now requires lethal TEs and Fasano is and will never be that
7. Karlos Dansby: not living up to his fat paycheck, the FO will drop him to spend that money elsewhere
8. Kevin Burnett
9. JT (retirement)
10. Will Allen
11. C. Wake: I love this guy, but if he's inconsistent, he may be good trade bait.
12. Henne: continuing inconsistencies like the last 2 games will put him on the trading block too
13. B. Marshall: if the season goes down badly, he may go postal and sabotage himself to demand a trade
14. Mike Nolan: the secondary and DB could bring him down
15. Brian Daboll: new HC may want his own man

Play selection stunk. We started to see some rays of hope when we threw short passes to Marshall and then let him run over people. WHY WHY WHY did they stop doing that. You do NOT need variety on offense if what you are doing works. "Same play on two" should be the play after every successful play.

Great post Armando. I agree 100%. The only problem is it makes too much sense and much like the Obama administration and politics in general, common sense will not prevail...sadly.

Let's be realistic here folks.

It is time to start talking about moving the team and building some premium condos where Dolphins Stadium is vastly under utalized.

Yup, it is time to root for the LA Dolphin!

Sorry Tony and Jeff but you have lost me.

Twenty five years as a season ticket holder, it's only Sept 19th and I can't get the least bit excited.

Call me when we have a serious coach and front office with the stones to get Luck or Jones in the draft. It's going to take multiple picks but the current way continues to fail.

Jake, if you're serious, you're an idiot! If you're joking, very funny my man.

Scallywag....I'm joking with DC....I actually DO think he is one of the more knowledgeable posters on this blog....

Me and DC disagree at times....but its never his knowledge that I question....most times its his approach.....

I would never watch another NFL game if the dolphins move out Miami!

Who do you guys think the idiots on TV will pick to win the game next week? Dolphins for Browns?

I'm no "hater". I've followed this team religiously since the mid 1970's. What I "hate" is the endless mediocrity and the obvious lack of hope for the future. We're two games in to a new season and already it's clear that this team is a carbon copy of the last two years, no progress whatsoever, no development at any skill positions, no fresh talent to light a spark, no indication that improvement will ever happen. The other three teams in the division are passing us by like we're standing still, which is exactly what's going on. Then, after another galling defeat, our coach is jabbering like an idiot about having no answers and blabbing about "RB packages" that should have been established in the pre-season. It's frustrating to watch this garbage football on a weekly basis.

And even worse, now we have to endure a season of this "suck for Luck" nonsense, as if Miami is somehow going to actually draft the guy, have him come in and magically turn the whole thing around single-handedly. Besides, we all know that even if they did have the first pick in the draft they'd blow it or trade it or do something boring and stupid with it like they always do.
