Bush-Thomas package on the way? Looks like it

On Sunday night I asked coach Tony Sparano if the team could find a way to get both Daniel Thomas and Reggie Bush in the game during games in which Thomas is the hot hand as the running back.

The idea, obviously, is that Bush is a potentially dynamic player and it would be a waste to have him on the sideline serving as a spectator while Thomas runs the football. I figured, find a way to use him as a third-down guy. Use him as a punt returner. Use them both in the backfield and perhaps move him out to the slot -- thus forcing the defense to defend Bush with their base unit.

But coach wasn't buying any of that. He said what we saw is basically the way things are.

"Reggie‟s role is where Reggie is," Sparano answered. "Thomas was going good today, you know, and that‟s where we were. It was that kind of game. It worked out good."

Well, today things are a bit different.

First of all, Sparano just told the media that Thomas was in for 33 plays while Bush was in for 25 plays. I know, it sure didn't feel like that. But those are the stats the coach repeated.

Then he said the club actually has a package that includes both Bush and Thomas and that they used it some Sunday. The problem was, he said, that with Thomas an uncertainty because of his recent injuries, the package is admittedly small.

Well, here's the deal: You should look for that package to expand. It has to happen if Dolphins coaches saw what everyone else did. It has to happen to use as many good players as possible at the same time. Makes sense.

Yes, you can be critical of the Dolphins for not being ready with an extensive package for both players versus Houston. But, again, the team's stated plan was to use Bush 70 percent of the time and Thomas about 30 percent. They didn't foresee Thomas having a breakout day while Bush continued to struggle on his runs.

And now my opinion:

I've seen enough of the Dolphins pushing Bush as a carry-the-load guy. He's not that guy. He's never been that guy. Bush is a fine talent. He's a matchup problem for base defenses. So use him that way. Use him closer to the way the Saints did.

And let the bigger back carry the load.

Seems like a good way to maximize both. Maybe even at the same time.

The fact that a passing team can instantaneously transform itself into a pretty decent power running team is nothing to complain about- it was the one surprising positive from yesterday.

We should avoid having Bush run up the middle and try to get him a few more flat passes out in open space- when Henne is running for his life, for example.

Congratulations to DT on his first game.

C63-AMG,

You're not wrong. We probably won't finish last and it's unlikely someone will trade with us. I just don't want us making a move to patch up our season and end if being mediocre again. If we're going to suck then let's suck bad!! And for all those saying the defence won't allow us to suck, well they've shown very little so far.

Dear Mr. Ross,
How long does this have to go on ? Sparano looked like he was gonna cry, probably was except for those stupid sunglasses he wears INDOORS, we couldnt tell !
PLEASE FIRE BOTH SPARANO and that INCOMPETENT Henchman of your Jeff Ireland today ! You have taken this once proud franchise and turned it into the laughing stock of this league. when you couldnt hire Harbaugh, you shouldve let Sparano go ! And Ireland couldnt BUY a good draft if he could pay for it. Every other team gets better every year and we get worse... NOT ACCEPTABLE !! I am THROUGH being a season ticket buyer until this farce gets corrected !

Is it possible that Miami has too many distractions for these young men to focus on football when they're playing at home?

That would be true Carlitos except we are not a passing team. We haven't been a passing team for years now. Remember Ricky and Ronnie?

The offensive line with columbo is a WTF moment. Sparono had every chance to show his worth and we can not get the O-line right EVER.

Brandon Marshall is a very good receiver. But far from GREAT. He does not make the catches we need him to make, those hard ones that hit him in the hands. And he is cutting routes mid play, then blaming the QB, when the QB has no time for the receiver to start changing plays. What does he not get?

That comes down to coaching also, these guys are plain not prepared to play, they are not prepared for the opponent, obvious with the Carroll on Johnson, after the way carroll played last week.

Nolen had no suprises to "stump" the Texans. Every once in a while we got in there, but then again a blind squirl seems to find a nut more often.

This is frustrating. Sorry for all the negativity. But this sucks.

Ohio Dolfan, I think it will be split between Fins vs Browns. Should be interesting to see how Vegas sees this game. My meaningless guess is Cleveland will be slight favorites. If I had to mortgage the house this minute would go Dolphins but wouldn't feel good about it.

No surprise here. A bad team from top to bottom. Why Ross is waiting to gut this dead fish is the biggest surprise. He didn't hire these people. Another rotten tuna did. Time to start fresh. Get the new people (Cowher, PLEASE) in place, then let them evaluate this team, and start moving forward right away when this disgrace is over.

Thomas and Bush? Please. Does anything really need to be said, except of course sad.

Thanks Chris, I was just curious..........I'm going to be hearing crap from the stupid Cleveland fans all week about this game. They do that every year the Dolphins play the Browns, but unfortunately this year I don't have much to come back with.

Hopefully by the end of the 4th quarter I will.

In all fairness, it was Huizenga who ran this franchise into the ground. We should commend Ross for having the courage to take it off Huizenga's hands.

Ohio Dolphin, I really feel like we can beat the Browns. Just go ahead and talk trash and pray...hahaha!!!

When will this silliness end.
As much as I like Sparano as a person, he seems to be another good assistant who just doesn't belong as a head coach. Cam Cameron is kicking booty as an OC right now.

So do we now go on the suck for Luck bandwagon.
Is it worth the sacraficing of a lost season anyway ??

kris, you see the problem. Here I'm making a simple point. And I'm trying to point out it's a very simple point. Some guy in the last blog says he thinks I'm knowledgeable. I say I'm not, I'm just a guy.

Then some joker wants to criticize me, thinking I'm tooting my own horn, when if he read the point would have come to the conclusion I'm not tooting my own horn, I'm calling myself a regular guy.

What gets me is I respond to the guy in kind, but he's not Man enough to respond back if he has something else to say.

But when you do it, there he is, still on the blog, with something cute to say.

Regardless of anyone liking it or not, I hope kris you respect that I say what I think, like a man, to people's faces, not as a cross-response to another poster. I believe you are one of those respected posters too (like how you tell DB off to his face, etc.). But there are too many on here who are chickenshyt, and they a part of the problem of this blog.

But that's neither here nor there, I could care less what Skallywag thinks about me or anything else, I come here to discuss the Dolphins.

And kris, we're pretty much right back where we started. Mediocrity.

DAM PARCELS REALLY SCREWED EVERYBODY IN MIAMI .LOOK AT THE FALCONS THEY WERE PICKING BEHIND US AT #2 IN 2007 SEASON AND THEY ARE CONTENDING NOW

Freedog,

they've already started the trash talk asking me what I will like to have to eat with my Sushi and Fish sticks next week.

Like they have much room to talk? Anyway, I may just stay calm cool and collective this week, confidentally believing the phins will grab that game, but not having to eat crow next week if we end up 0-3 to the stupid browns

Just did a google search and found a website listing Cleveland as a 1.5 point favorite. Don't know the site so not sure it's legit but that sounds about right.

Forget Mccoy, we better find a way to stop the run as Hillis is a pretty good runner between the tackles.

With the way the Dolphin's "luck" has been going lately - if they do end up getting Luck for a QB in the draft, he'll probably turn out to be the second coming of Ryan Leaf. Wouldn't surprise me with the way our QB position has been jinxed since Marino left.

What I'd like to know is whatever happened to the team that ran those eleven minute, plodding, pounding drives that resulted in eleven wins and a playoff game? It was something to build upon, by now they should be that team no one wants to play: exhausting, with an opportunistic, fierce defense, fundamentally sound, not prone to mistakes. At least it'd be something instead of nothing.

Ohio, I got it week one, from the Pats fans. Now I'm getting it from everyone! We better beat Cleveland.

Shame it took the coaching staff an entire preseason and two games to realize that Bush is not an inside runner. New Orleans could have told you that. WE could have told him that. It is a real shame when the fans are smarter then the Front Office and the Coaching Staff.

Pathetic.

Sometimes certain personel moves are so easy to see. It's not rocket science. Jerome Harrison would've been a great addition. Instead, the Lions snatched him up. Nate Solder would've been a great addition. Instead the Patriots drafted him. Jeremy Shockey would've made a great tandem with Fasano. I understand having to go with Sean Smith and Vontea Davis. It is not working. They're taking steps backwards. Some kind of move is necessary.
This GM and HC just can't get into an NFL kind of rhythm with player personel. It's just not working.

I THINK SPORANO IS OUT IF WE LOSE THIS NEXT GAME

Theaquablues, those guys are now 65 years old. You're referring to the 1973 Dolphins. 2008 was a mirage, it's a passing league.

DC Dolfan REALLY? This is a blog about the Phins not a blog for you to pontificate about yourself and how some "joker" isn't man enough to respond back to you. Get over yourself, it's about the Phins. Good lord...That whole rant was about YOU...Wow! Look how long that rant was...Now, back to Dolphins talk you self absorbed vain fool!

Mando, has Sparano been fired yet? Give us the deets!!!

Still on track for a decent season, I think. Offense showed signs of life again this week. Still the occasional miscommunication between Henne and Marshall, especially when protection breaks down, but Henne has delivered some nice passes when the receivers were where they were supposed to be. Missed a couple, but it looked like he missed fewer than Schaub, in terms of bad throws. the defense puzzles me, but the past two weeks were against great offenses. I think we win next week against the Browns, and hopefully have things pulled together for week 4--the big one in my mind.

Assuming Ireland and Sparano will be gone by the end of the season, here are other individuals I think may be in jeopardy.

1. Marc Colombo: he should have gone along with Sapp ---> AGREE. Columbo is a joke. The fact Ireland signed him is a bigger joke.

2. Incognito and Carey: I have no doubt next season will mean another OLine overhaul and these two will be in question. ---> Depends on who you can get to replace them & at what $$$.

3. Reshard Jones ---> I disagree. He just needs more experience.

4. Nolan Carroll ---> Should be cut now. No hope.

5. Dan Carpenter ---> Not living up to his paycheck & is now a liability.

6. Fasano: this league now requires lethal TEs and Fasano is and will never be that ---> We have been saying this for YEARS. Fasano must have named pictures of Jeff & Tony together. Makes NO sense!

7. Karlos Dansby: not living up to his fat paycheck, the FO will drop him to spend that money elsewhere ---> Will have to see how year plays out.

8. Kevin Burnett ---> Same as Dansby.

9. JT (retirement) ---> Agree.

10. Will Allen ---> A useful backup CB if he stays healthy and lower salary.

11. C. Wake: I love this guy, but if he's inconsistent, he may be good trade bait. ---> A KEEPER.

12. Henne: continuing inconsistencies like the last 2 games will put him on the trading block too ---> He will be a free agent. With LUCK, he will be gone. Either way, new coaching staff will want a new QB.

13. B. Marshall: if the season goes down badly, he may go postal and sabotage himself to demand a trade ---> A Keeper with a new QB.

14. Mike Nolan: the secondary and DB could bring him down ---> New coach will bring in new staff.

15. Brian Daboll: new HC may want his own man ---> Same as Nolan.

After 2 games, I've seen enough to know that:

1. Ireland made the right call in sticking with Henne.

2. Ireland did well in moving up to draft Thomas (I wasn't at all sure at draft time).

3. We need better at RT

4. we aren't going to the Superbowl.

...but I knew about point 4 before the season started.

So, what's all the fuss about?

Chris in the 623: hear you, it's just that right now they're not anything, just a team that can't score without kicking a FG. I'd LOVE to see some wide open, 2011 NFL football in Miami but with this bunch it'll never happen. It's the GM & HC's job to notice league-wide trends and adapt to them somehow. They've failed miserably at that and it shows each and every week.

When will it be cool enough at the stadium to put paper bags over our heads?

Just asking...

if all fans were like ncfinfan sun life stadium would be packed with a bunch of suckers

Scally, Not my business, but I think your looking to deep into "his words" vs his point.

Probably something to move away from and help me figure out what I am missing, because to me the coaching staff really sucks! It is only 2 games, but our team was not prepared at all it seems.

the best coaching move of the game was realizing that their D was going right after Henne and not respecting anything else. So it seems Daboll changed the O to delayed hand offs, to let their D over pursue to henne, then giving open field to Thomas.

beyond that, coaching was trash.

I'd forfeit my season right now if we could be assured of :

Getting Andrew Luck
Firing Sparano
Hiring Cowher
Firing Ireland <--- The worst GM in the NFL !

Dear Santa... What do you say ? Please ?

Where are all the NFL scouts in here that were saying Daniel Thomas was a bust before even seeing him play his first game? Crickets... In his first game he rushes for over 100 yards on just 18 carries.

WHY OH WHY?

Bush has 2 carries and he was pulled for Thomas. You sign a guy and say he is your primary back then give him 2 carries before you bench him. He later had 2-3 more carries in the second half. That is completely unacceptable, Thomas had more carries in one drive then Bush did the whole game. Perhaps keep him in, give it to him on 1st and 2nd down. Give it to him when it is not obvious that we are gonna run. Im sick of hearing he doesn't run between the tackles when thats all he does now. Thomas was successful a few times when he went outside the tackles. If the hole isn't there, it isn't there. Uneducated announcers and analysts need to watch the game instead of looking at stats. We got this guy to be an every down back, and yet we don't give him the ball. Additionally, Bush is known for his relentless endzone attack. Yet he was never given a touch inside the 30 yard line. Thomas fumble just fuels my disgust even more. Thomas is good, but bring him in as a back up to your playmaker. You want touchdowns give it to Bush, you want 4 yards give it to Thomas.

Marshall's drop was huge, and Henne needs to stop getting his balls batted down.

Not Defending Anyone, but I personally did not see Sparano and Ireland: missing FGs, dropping balls, fumbling, not blocking, missing tackles, getting burned up and down the field, etc.,etc., etc....if the guilty parties would have taken care of business...W on the board....also, don't care what anybody says they miss Crowder in the middle....getting killed up the gut

Poizen, That was my point. He is going on and on about my comment and spending almost 2 paragraphs of time on it when this is a Dolphins blog. Get over it and himself. Go PHINS!!!

#1 Henne is the right call as opposed to what? He is the wrong call for this franchise long-term. He had a career night against New England, it is all downhill from here.

#2 Thomas looks like Sammie Smith. An upright fumble-prone runner. Sparano looked more interested in trying to get Thomas 100 yards then trying to win the game! Pathetic. I would bet Thomas ends up being an average back, nothing special and certainly not an upgrade over Ronnie Brown. The jury is still out, but I don't think by any means you can determine it was the right call. I think there is still a better chance Thomas ends up being a bust.

#3 RT is Ireland's fault. Columbo can't pay & we gave him $$$. Pathetic.

#4 No Superbowl? I guess we can all agree on that.

Cohwer is a good coach but i think he always had a GM with the steelers doing the picks in the draft. So i dont know if he's a good GM

Cohwer wants to be coach and GM

Hey Armando,

Can you see if they will play "MR ROBOTO" when Henne is introduced in the starting line-ups? Perhaps some pictures of Robocop on the big screens when Henne completes a pass?

Thanks!

Cowher can't do any worse then Jeff Ireland. I say give Cowher complete control. At least his players will respect him.

I think Cowher would be a good choice but I would hope whom ever we get as our new coach would keep Daboll. This guy is talented, in my opinion. Cowher and any other coach that has been out of coaching for a while probably doesn't already have a guy so might as well keep Daboll. Cowher would whoop this team in shape.

Most people here said he had a fumble problem as well. Do you want them here to remind you of that or was the fumble with the game on the line enough to refresh your memory?

Sparano clearly doesn't have the players ready or conditioned to play. That is the coaches fault, not the players. And it is Ireland's fault for keeping players like Benny Sapp or Nolan Carroll and cutting players like Will Allen to save money. It is Ireland's fault for not having depth at RB. It is both of there faults the OL is mediocre. It is Ireland's fault to not bring someone in to truly challenge Henne or at least draft someone to give us a chance for the future.

Pathetic.

This is the crap that makes me nuts, Everyone is allowed to have an opinion. I get it...

But Henne is a mouse of a problem with about 20 elephants and then people come here and just attack him.

It is f'n stupid. I will criticize henne when it is warranted, TRUST ME, but anyone doing it now when he is the only guy playing his arse off is dumb.

Has anyone seen how hard and often he is getting hit?

Guys,

I'm just as sick over this as anyone.

I've had to time to read all the blogs, most of which I do not agree with, and digest the game yesterday.

It is pretty easy to see what the Dolphins were doing yesterday offensively. They were trying to protect the defense. They went away from the 4 WR set to a 3 WR set with an extra TE or H-BACK. They were adding help to the right side, and were trying to take time off the clock and extend drives to keep the DEF offe the field.

I don't have a problem with this, but batted passes, dropped balls and missed FG's don't help. When you get into the RED ZONE, you have to pound it in and make a statement.

Daniel Thomas proved a lot yesterday. This kid has a future, and should be the starter period!

Jake Long has never looked this bad. I hope it is the rust.

I don't know what all the hate is on Hartline is. The guy catches everything.

There should of been more pass plays to Bush. Get the guy in space!

Now the DEF. Once Vontae was out of the game, how is Will Allen not playing corner? The guy was a ALL PRO at the position.

I'm still trying to also figure out why we have turned into a 4-3 DEF with little or few attempts at different looks or blitzs?

News flash, Matt Schaub is a good QB, not even close to Tom Brady. They should have been blitzing like crazy.

As for the DEF line. Absolutely brutal!! Everyone of them needs to look in the mirror.

More to come..

Where are all the NFL scouts in here that were saying Daniel Thomas was a bust before even seeing him play his first game? Crickets... In his first game he rushes for over 100 yards on just 18 carries.

Most of the carries came in the 2nd half with Miami trailing. I am sure Houston was more concerned with giving up a quick TD to Miami through the air (even though that rarely happens). Sparano was more interested in getting Thomas 100 yards then trying to catch-up and win the game.

Seems like the 2010 Dolphins to me.

Good job Ireland!

The one thing that is always the same is the all 3 phases can never play well together.

How 'bout we do this Skallwag (by the way, who made it about me? Did you say anything about THE TEAM, or did you remark about a remark I made about a prior conversation I had, go back and read the transcript, nothing's been deleted. Actually, go back and read ALL my comments, ABOUT THE TEAM, going back to yesterday, then try to find ONE comment you made, about THE TEAM, and not another poster you made the wrong decision to call out).

But, like I said, let's try something. Tell me something, ANYTHING about THIS TEAM that you feel. Either about the game, the state of affairs, how to fix things, ANYTHING relating to the team.

See, that's how it works. You make an opinion, and other posters respond in agreement or disagreement. These guys standing up for me (kris, Poizen) have all had such conversations with me. They all know I mostly talk about, THE TEAM. They know jokers come on here though who mostly talk about, OTHER POSTERS. And they know it's those jokers who mess up this blog, not those of US who talk about, THE TEAM.

So, again, state an opinion. Make your mark. Let's see where you are, and maybe I'll have something to discuss with you. If not, get the F*CK outta my face and let me get back to discussing THE TEAM with others who actually care about THE TEAM!!!

I agree with you Poizen. Henne is the only guy so far that has turned things around. He has cut down on the INT's and is moving the team forward. The only thing keeping us from scoring more is the cast around him. Henne is not the problem, Folks! Let's talk about the dropped endzone passes by Marshall, the fumble by Thomas, etc...Henne has actually impressed more than depressed me so far this year.

It had to be expected that the new offense would take some time to gel. The defense has been the bigger downside surprise.

That being said, its not inconceivable we can head into the bye week 2-2. Think about it, at 2-2 the picture looks a lot brighter, there is hope. Despite so many obvious disappointments, and my own complete lack of confidence in Sparano, I'm willing to wait until the bye week before writing the season off.

There it is again, Dc Dolfan. More about you. Whaaahhh! Look how much you enjoy this. Look how long your post is. Get over yourself. Hahahaha!!! Freaking Vain.

Agreed ! I thought the same thing, why is Will Allen not playing instead of Nolan Crowell ?
Coaching again ! Sparano's decision, or lack of it... AGAIN ! I HATE TONY SPARANO !!

Henne was horrible yesterday. Also, lack of Bush catching the ball out of the backfield was incomprehensible. Why not use one of your best weapons? Oh yeah, Bush wasn't on the field cause we had to get Daniel Thomas 100 yards so he doesn't look like a bust!

What a joke.

Poizen, that's what worries me now. If Henne takes anymore of those hits, he's done. And Henne HAS BEEN our MVP on offense this year (so far). Not sure who else it would be (maybe Marshall, but Henne threw him those passes).

Henne's tough, that's his best quality, but no QB can take hits like that. He's putting his body on the line, for the 1st down, getting his head scrambled. That's not a good look for our QB.

That's not to say Henne is perfect, he's far from that. But does anyone think Matt Moore would have come any closer to winning those games than Chad Henne? That's our point here.
