Dolphins' Ross may be one who needs to 'stop quitting'

CLEVELAND -- Perhaps it was a parapraxis. Or perhaps it was just a tragically constructed sentence.

Either way, Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne uttered this sentence after the Dolphins 17-16 loss to the Browns on Sunday: "I know one thing about these guys," Henne said, "they're not going to stop quitting."

Ouch.

Look, the Dolphins haven't quit. Players haven't. Coaches haven't. They are not getting results because they're not good enough or smart enough or whatever other reason you might cite. But because they quit?

No way.

Here's someone I fear might have quit on this team to a degree: Owner Stephen Ross.

My column in today Miami Herald discusses the topic.

The column discusses how Ross may be as much at fault for Miami's problems as the players and coaches. Why? The man apparently hasn't been fully invested in player acquisition this year.

In short, the column tells you where the Dolphins rank in player expenditure this year. It is a terrible ranking, perhaps the worst the team has ever had. And that, against the backdrop of Miami being second in the NFL behind only the New York Giants in player salaries in 2009, is stark.

So why the significant change? Simply, the Dolphins have been losing money at an alarming rate this year. So they're trying to trim back in certain areas. Player salaries is apparently one of those.

It is so well-known within the organization that two sources have suggested to me Ross has quit on his team this year and set them up for failure.

As the column tells you, I tried to get answers about this and other matters from Ross. Chased him as he was leaving Cleveland Browns Stadium. He didn't want to answer any questions.

Well, until he does, the questions will linger: Has Ross set up the Dolphins to fail this year because he limited expenditures on player acquisitions?

The evidence is damning.

Andrew Luck!

It makes sense, also may clear up some of the mysterious personal moves spoken about in a previous blog. May not be that Ireland and co were inept in some of the decisions but simply doing what Ross has ordered. Cutting back. Basically if this is true they kept Sparano and made him coach a product that they knew they weren't giving it all they could for him to have success. I guess once parcells left there was no one there to fend off Ross.

I keep reading some posts citing...Andrew Luck!...well if the phins draft him i think he'll be USELESS until he's surrounded by a good coaching staff and most of all a descent offensive line...Drafting LUCK will not save this francise people.....the francise starts at the top (OWNER and FRONT OFFICE)....Top players don't win you games....coaching and player development first of all! So stop praying for LUCK in the draft...instead pray that we get some real luck as in a new owner and new coaching staff first!

NOBODY DOES NOT CIRCLE THE WAGONS LIKE THE FINS....

Maybe i'm just wandering off into memory lane but is it a coincidence that ever since the joe robbie family sold the club it's been downhill ever since????.....Why??..ROBBIE was a FAN of miami he loved the team and the city...thats called passion...personal passion..the others were and still are in it just for the money and could give a hoot about the team or anything else that had to do with the pfins!....ARMANDO DO YOU AGREE??

As a fan of over 37 yrs m totally dumbfounded ....this is so sad ...it goes back to Ross ....he is a terrible owner maybe this is why parcels acted this way ...where do we go from here ....where ??????

There are reasons and probably many reasons for Ross to quit on this team.
After researching and discussing the Phins with other coaches during the spring, Ross was left with the conclusion that the good talent he had now was not great enough to get to 11-5 or 12-4. They are good but not good enough.
Looking at the next year, coming in last overall is not a bad thing for the future. Getting a great qb, getting a high second rounder, building a team around a qb and faster players will work.
Sparano will be gone and replaced by a modern era coach.
Or, he doesn't have the money he says he has and he realized that attendance would suck and his income drastically reduced.
Hoping he can cut Sparano and maybe Brand Marshalls contracts out next year and get younger and better.
Saban did not do us any favours. Ronnie Brown and Jason Allen were not great players. Neither was Ginn. We have been making second rate 1st and second rounders for years. (well I wouldn't tell Long he was second rate to his face)

Ross if you cannot afford the team, you need to sell it to someone who can. We need cash flow, a new GM, effective coaching and a heavy dose of leadership. Without any of those elements, we are the new Detroit, Tampa, Cleveland, and KC of the past.

This organization was built on a winning tradition and you have compromised that by ignoring the weaknessess of this team and recognition of that league wide status. Shame.... Shame....

I hate to speculate but, didsn't he make his money in real estate? And we all know what the market is like today; maybe he lost a ton of monery recently.

He can afford it, but he is a business man first. It's in his blood. I brought thi fact up about Ross during the FA period. A couple of other bloggers told me I was wrong. ITC was the most vocal. Needless to say, I told you so. It was so obvious to me that Ross was tightening the purse strings.
That said, Sparano and Ireland have had enough rope to hang themselves. Mr. Ross, finish what you started this offseason and finish these two clowns off.

Oh my, what has happened to the Dolphins? its a sad state of affairs, I Love the Dolphins, but it seems like the owner, dosen't like his team as much as I do. Unfortunately I will NOT be buying any Dolphin merchandise this year, By By NFL Ticket too.

That really makes alot of the ignorant decisions make alot more sense.. Maybe they arent as stupid as i thought. Alot of stupid decisions are made based on money savings

But why would he want to make things worse? More empty seats, less value if he wants to sell. Makes no sense.

Ireland must go...he cant make the impact moves like jets.ect...he has been bad for 4 frigging yrs not 1...

BOYCOTT THE DOLPHINS!!! BOYCOTT ROSS!!! DONT GO TO HOME GAMES UNTIL SOMEONE SHOWS THEY GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THIS TEAM!!! TAKE A STAND!!!

You're right jrljr2, Ross is a business man first. What is to become of the Dolphin nation?

Let me tell you, nationally, based on many of the news media reports I have been watching, have reported that the Miami fan base in really angry and expect change immediately. I guess my point is that, this is not just a few fans mouthing off; it's a bunch of folks.

Sporano will not be fired till the bye week......thats just the way its gonna be....

Sparano showed his true stripes yesterday by settling for field goals instead of trying to win the game on offense. Also many penalties and mental errors showed how bad this coaching really is.

Ireland also showed he can't be trusted over and over with personnel.
Brandon Marshall is an ass. Another easy red zone drop. That's 3 for 3 so far this year. The new Sammie smith.

I don't blame Ross for not reinvesting with these guys, they had their shot.

Start with a new regime, new hotshot qb and off we go.

With any product, the consumer, has the right to buy or not.No difference with the Dolphins. The real fans have had it with the dismal, underperforming team, year after year.I agree with above posts,Boycott the Dolphins until they show they can put a winning team on the field.Hit Ross in his pockets, where it hurts him the most.Embarassed to say I am a fins fan.

Season is over and we are still in September. So sad.

They need to just fired everyone including the players. They looked horrible out on the field.

PRICE MASTER......

I look forward to your commens.....per our agreement a few days ago.....

I don't agree with Mando often, but I have got to give it to him here. The biggest problem with the Dolphins is cheap skate Ross. Sadly, nobody can fire him. I don't think Sparano and Jeff are great, but who knows Ross has them handcuffed. Its rare I agree with Mando, but i agree with him on Ross. I also agree with Sal Marino about Andrew Luck! He would get killed on this Dolphins team with the O-line they have. Luck is probably hoping he doesn't get picked by the phins hu? I am also not thrilled with Henne,I am not a die hard Henne supporter, but would be curious as to how he would fare if he had a decent O-line to block and a decent TE to throw to. No qb can survive without an O-line. Look whats happening with Vick in Philidelphia and Vick is mobile. Hope the new gm will speak his mind to Ross when he's hired and told not to be so cheap. It irs me this guy spends so much on entertainers who are already millionaires and short changes his hard working employees. He only looks for bargain basement player and wonders why he's loosing.

BOYCOTT THE DOLPHINS!!! BOYCOTT ROSS!!! DONT GO TO HOME GAMES UNTIL SOMEONE SHOWS THEY GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THIS TEAM!!! TAKE A STAND!!!

I know this has been said over and over, but it warrants repeating. Isn't Sparano supposed to be one of the leagues top offensive line coaches? What the .....

The worst part about all of this is.....

Wait for it.....

Henne looks OK......he looks like a real NFL QB.....the ball was out quick....he was decisive....he called for the roughing the passer flag...even talked shyt to the defender after the play was over...

Its Official.....robo-henne is dead....and Very-average Henne is born.....I feel like my kid is startingto grow up....

Who would have thought we would be 0-3.....and its not Henne's fault.....its an upside down world....

What a terrible owner.

Ross reminds me of my late grandmother. She would travel back and forth between stores when shopping. She would see a can of beans was two cents cheaper at the other store, then go get the beans and see a bag of flour was three cents cheaper at the other store, then remember a pound of hambuger meat was 3 cents cheaper etc; She would proudly boast to me "I saved twenty five cents shopping" Yea, but she burned three dollars in gas going from store to store. She spent three dollars to save twenty five cents. Genuis. Thats why Ross didn't fire Sparano in January. He would have had to pay Tony the remainder of his contract plus the new coaches salary. He gave Sparano an extension and raise and will have to pay Tony more now when he fires him. Brilliant Ross! Remember, several coaches turned Ross down in Jan. Maybe they saw they couldnt win with his cheap ways!

If Ross is not spending money because he 'quit' on this team.....meaning he's going to wait until there's new management in place, it sends the wrong message to prospective HCs & GMs. Especially after the underhanded crap he pulled last year.

If Ross is not spending money because of poor ticket sales...same thing.

Look, yes the players are of NFL caliber; no questioin. The rub here is that there is a thing called: calling an effective game stategy and that is where we fail miserably. I hate calling out Sparano, but he does not know how to manage a game. Time-outs called at the wrong time, clock management, play calling, etc, do wnat me to keep on?????

mark, EVERY THING HAVE BEEN SAID ..............

DO YOU KNOW WHAT TS'S SON THE QUALITY COACH DOES ?

Ross has them handcuffed.

------------------------------------------------------
This has got to be the statment of the day.....and NOT in a good way......

Why should Ross continue to give his money to those that shoudn't be trusted.....

He BOUGHT you and me the MOST expensive O-Line in the NFL a few years ago.....did it get him a playoff win....NO...

He bought you and I tthe MOST expensive LB on the market.....did he get a return on his invest ment with a playoff win....NO......

He signed the MOST expensive WR on the Market......not even a winning record.......

You and I wanted a play maker......he gave us Reggie Bush for 2 years and 10 MILLION DOLLARS.....is it Ross's fault the dummies in the coaching staff refuse to run him on sweeps and tosses...and screens....BUT instead keep running him between the tackles....somehow thinking thier fooling the defence.....

THIER ONLY FOOLING THEMSELVES...AS USUAL......

Damn, that was a good post Kris. Very true.

This fan base never ceases to amaze me.....

Henne throws a horrible pass......its Hennings fault.....

Sporano losses games.....its Ross's fault.....

Sometimes it is exaxtly as your eyes saw it......

As usual, you're full of it. The new CBA REQUIRES teams to spend to the cap. He has no choice. Any owner who spends his own money to buy up tickets so fans can enjoy the game is not cheap.
The problem here is poor Coaching and poor player selection. As simple as that.

Rey Rey.....

Thanks.....

Dear Mr. Salguero

"I tried to get answers about this and other matters from Ross. Chased him as he was leaving Cleveland Browns Stadium"

I'll finish this for you.

As I chased Mr. Ross I got Chop blocked by Mike Dee's then gangtackled by J-Lo and the Williams sisters then I think Marc Anthony grabbed my crotch and twisted it as he said no more questions Newspaper boy.

Was it like that ?

Soiled :)

once again we find a way to lose. The guy i really feel bad for is henne, he has been holding up his end. he is playing well enough to win. yet idiots like marshall continue to drop td passes, kicker misses field goal, bush fumbles, etc. This team makes me sick. Oh don't let me forget the awful play in the secondary.

We all know what the problem is and Ross has got to respond. Enough said.

I DON'T THINK I AGREE ARMANDO, OF COURSE I AM NOT IN THE LOOP, BUT THEY HAVE SPENT A TON OF DOUGH ON THE O LINE OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS, AND BRANDON MARSHALL'S CONTRACT, AND DIDN'T THEY JUST GIVE BURNETT A BIG CONTRACT ALONG WITH DANSBY A FEW YEARS AGO. I THINK HE WOULD SPEND THE MONEY BUT HE MAY NOT COMPLETELY TRUST THESE GUYS AND WHO CAN BLAME THEM. ROSS SHOULD HAVE WENT WITH HIS GUT LAST YEAR AND FIRED TONY AND JEFF SHOULD GO AS WELL HE CAN NOT IDENTIFY TALENT. THIS TEAM DOES NOT HAVE ANY IMPACT PLAYERS ON IT ,WHICH HURTS AND THEN YOU COMBINE THAT WITH BAD COACHING AND THIS IS WHAT WE ARE LEFT WITH. THIS TEAM MAY NOT WIN A GAME THIS YEAR, THESE PLAYERS HAVE NO HEART THEY CAN'T MAKE A PLAY WHEN THEY HAVE TO AND THAT IS EITHER SIDE OF THE BALL THE LAST TWO WEEKS GAMES WERE WINNABLE GAMES WE ARE JUST TOO CONSERVATIVE . THIS WILL BE TONY'S LAST YEAR HE SUCKS AS A COACH.

Ross has given this FO everything they have ASKED for....including TERRIBLE GERBRIL WILSON.....and then Ross ate that contract just ONE YEAR LATER........

Come on men......Ross isn't perfect....and his off-season debacle is well documented.....

But he is far from the problem.....

Armando is just trying to get some of the HEAT of of Tony and Jeff....

and some of you are falling for it.....

Hook
Line
and
Sinker

A franchise losing money, fans, games and a hostile unfriendly media. I am telling you, listen to the rumors, this team is on it's way to Loa Angeles. So, enjoy ripping the team now, but by 2014 we in Miami will be begging the Jaguars to move down to our empty stadium.

~Well i think this was the most crazy story you have written Armando. Mr Ross has used almost all his salary cap. All he does is write the checks. He has nothing to do with who we draft or paly on sundays.. So lets not blame me for this. I just own the team. ut dont worry dolphin fans i will fix it. I have called Mr Cowher and he told me to find him a house down there and he will be here soon.

I'm no fan of Ross at all but his major faults were retaining inept Sparano and Ireland. He inherited Parcell's mess, Huizenga's last bit of sabotage on the franchise he had turned into garbage, just as he made his billions carting it. I think in retrospect Parcells' egomaniac incompetence and grandfathering in of unqualified lackeys might well eclipse what Jimmy Johnson, his gofer Wannstedt, Spielman and Saban accomplished to trash the team. And that's saying something. How can you pretend to be qualified football men and put an OL and defense on the field like this? They needed to upgrade four players on the OL, they managed one. How's this for a list of failures -- Merling, White, Misi, Turner, Murphy, Edds, Nalbone, Jerry? Then add in the FA disasters w/ the exception of Starks. Has anyone seen prized FA ILB Kevin Burnett make a play yet? I think they're running a 4-4, no LBs on the field. And Brandon Marshall gotta go. A cancer waiting to spread. Blame Henne, that's what our genius Miami fans like to do. Just like they mocked the winning gamer Fiedler for getting battered time and time again by a line that never concerned itself w/ pass blocking or passing offense. True, Parcells did draft Henne. That is a black mark. I wonder what Mike Nolan thinks of his personnel?

Congrats to the Bills......

If we could get our heads out of our butts.....then we could be in.....what is shaping up to be a wide open race for the AFC EAST.....

and we all remember from the 90's......its hard to beat the Bills in Ralph Wilson Stadium in NOV and DEC.....

and lastly on the Bills....they don't have that phony feel to them that KC had last year...and we had in 08.....

doubt they will win the division this year.....but they HAVE gotten better......

It's all Hennes fault...he should be able to avoid getting sacked.. lol...the dolphins suck that's all there is too it...Andy luck will look like crap behind that line

Thankyou, Armando.

Jake, you're kidding right? The LA Dolphins; that will never happen.

We Love our dolphins, but we are fighting for bringing back the legacy that once was feared and respected by the entire league.

We don't even get national commentaries and reports on our games anymore and maybe going to lose the priviledge of playing on national ly televised night games.

You must be a new fan if you're not getting this whole anger fan thing. We want our reputation back. PERIOD.

And cutting a reasonably priced channing crowder for an expensive Burnett surely has made us cover tight ends better too, no? Ben Watson was open all day against our Mega millions inside linebackers.

Come on Ross, do the right thing and start anew after this season. In the meantime, let these idiots continue to dig the hole that will bring us an upper echelon qbs prospect.

Not that I'm blaming henne in any way. I think hes been outstanding considering the idiot Marshall sucks donkey scrotum and dropping passes when they matter and the line can't block anyone including jake

Armando.....

THE MIAMI DOLPHINS...had the ball on the 50 yard line....needing JUST a feild goal to win.....

and WE fail to move the ball 1 inch......

Work that into your next ROSS QUITTING article.......

Why would Ross want to set up the Team for failure? That would go against his best interest$. But if it were so, there are only two possibilities of why he's doing it: either he wants to get rid of the Team, or he wants to relocate It. My opinion.

Can you blame him? How many millions did Ross spend in signing bonuses the last couple of years to just the O line players that didn't pan out. That's not chump change even for a billionaire.

I agree Dowless and things are becoming more clear now, at least for me.

THE NEW KRIS IF I CAN CALL HIM THAT IS VERY GOOD WRITER AND TO THE POINT .......HOPE ODIN CAN LEARN HOW YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR STYLE AND BE A BETTER POST WRITER ..................

You are wrong, Armando. Most of the Team has quit on TS as evidenced yesterday on that Field. And so have I.

Sal, about Luck....where were the Colts before they got Manning? The QB position is the most important position on the team, that's where you start to rebuild. Do you need an offensive line sure but you got to have that QB position filled with a competent and capable player, which the Fins have lacked since the real Marino was throwing to Duper and Clayton.

Wishing and hoping for Luck!

It seems everyone forgets-they talk about ownership-and that is partly right-BUT-the Dolphins have not been winning since Shula "stepped aside" so Wayne could hire the savior JJ. We have not been a good teram since.

I think the downfall started since Joe Robbie died, Mike.
