Dolphins' Ross may be one who needs to 'stop quitting'

CLEVELAND -- Perhaps it was a parapraxis. Or perhaps it was just a tragically constructed sentence.

Either way, Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne uttered this sentence after the Dolphins 17-16 loss to the Browns on Sunday: "I know one thing about these guys," Henne said, "they're not going to stop quitting."

Ouch.

Look, the Dolphins haven't quit. Players haven't. Coaches haven't. They are not getting results because they're not good enough or smart enough or whatever other reason you might cite. But because they quit?

No way.

Here's someone I fear might have quit on this team to a degree: Owner Stephen Ross.

My column in today Miami Herald discusses the topic.

The column discusses how Ross may be as much at fault for Miami's problems as the players and coaches. Why? The man apparently hasn't been fully invested in player acquisition this year.

In short, the column tells you where the Dolphins rank in player expenditure this year. It is a terrible ranking, perhaps the worst the team has ever had. And that, against the backdrop of Miami being second in the NFL behind only the New York Giants in player salaries in 2009, is stark.

So why the significant change? Simply, the Dolphins have been losing money at an alarming rate this year. So they're trying to trim back in certain areas. Player salaries is apparently one of those.

It is so well-known within the organization that two sources have suggested to me Ross has quit on his team this year and set them up for failure.

As the column tells you, I tried to get answers about this and other matters from Ross. Chased him as he was leaving Cleveland Browns Stadium. He didn't want to answer any questions.

Well, until he does, the questions will linger: Has Ross set up the Dolphins to fail this year because he limited expenditures on player acquisitions?

The evidence is damning.

Sorry to have burst your delusional bubble, Dying Breed.

The fact remains the ONLY scenario of a "Los Angeles Dolphins" exists in your confused and fact-bereft imagination. There is ZERO actual talk of such a possibility.

In the REAL WORLD of facts and among those who actually follow actual NFL news, it's the Chargers who are headed to Los Angeles. It will almost assuredly be announced next March when their 'escape clause' in their San Diego lease kicks in. This has been in the news, repeatedly, for months.

If ignorance is bliss, you must be one happy guy.

Good post!!

Armando,

ridiculous article. The Dolphins are 0-3 because Tony is just a pathetic, conservative mess, the worst HC in the league and Ireland is not a very good talent evaluator.

They both should have been fired when the Tuna ran off with all that money.

While we're on it, how about answering who is coached the defense for the current Super Bowl champs and is still there? How about the Falcons and the guy who ran their offense to 14-2 last season? Now answer this question: Why did both of these guys suck when they worked for us?

JRS,

Thx for confirming indeed you are off of your narcissistic medication. The warning's noted. This is my last post to you in your unmedicated narcissistic stae today. God Bless!

LOL.....................................................

Tuna helper doesn't do much good without the Tuna.

The Miami Dolphins Organization no longer deserves any fans. Who can like, or admire anything about this organization anymore? They are distasteful from the top down. Better things to occupy your life with than this stench.

Tuna helper doesn't do much good without the Tuna.

I mean why do we have Tuna Helper without Tuna?

Of course it's your last post to me. You can't respond intelligently to the facts I presented nor are you able to defend your own delusional notions about the "LA Dolphins" with even a shred of evidence.

Instead, you resort to the trite and tedious old internet tactic of attacking the messenger.

I expected nothing more from you.

Joe Robbie was a tightwad as well. Remember when Zonk, Kiick and Warfield split for the WFL.

It's not just about the money, its where its spent and on whom its spent. You have to wonder why Ireland and Sparano could not find a better RT than Colombo. That's not a money issue.

What is the matter with all of you???

If Dan F'n Carpenter made his field goals, like he is paid to do, our team would be 2-1.

Half of you negative nelly's would still be calling for someone to be fired. But most of us would see a team that can definitely improve but would be 2-1 and right in the middle of the AFC East hunt.

3 missed field goals in 2 games is the difference between 2-1 and 0-3.

If you want to fire someone the first head on a spit should be Carpenters!!

Oh, and learn how to spell the team founder's name correctly.

"Robby?!?" Sheesh.

SEEMS SO ONE IS SPEAKING TO THEMSELVES TO SOOTH THE NARCISSISTIC URGE TO BE RIGHT.

I WONDER WHO THAT COULD BE? LOL...........................................................................

DB I THINK YOU WERE BEAT VERY BADLY BY JRS BUT STILL YOU ARE A GOOD AND HONORABLE MAN. JRS YOU ARE CORRECT IN ALL YOU SAID THOUGH

If we lose next week to chargers, i'm officially on the 'SUCK FOR LUCK' bandwagon.

like it was said earlier, you earn your money in the red zone, and its clear chad it not getting it done there. Lets start all over again, and do what we should of done before, by choosing a #1 pick on a QB and rebuild around him.

go dolphins!!!

WOULD EVERBODY STOP SAYING THAT HENNE GOT BETTER HE STILL SUCKS!!!!!!!!ON EVERY WINING DRIVE TO WIN A GAME HE'S GONE 4 AND OUT OR GETS INTERCEPTED ON THE LAST DRIVE TO WIN A GAME. HE'S NEVER WON A FOCKING GAME WHEN IT COUNTS.AND IF IRELAND AND SPORANO ARE STUPID ENOUGH TO KEEP BELIEVING THAT HENNE IS THE FUTURE THEN THEY DESERVE TO GET FIRED A.S.A.P!!!!!!

Outstanding post!!

PHARMACEUTICALS CAN BE BEAUTIFUL THING WHEN CORRECTLY USED TO TREAT TROMBONIANT MENTAL CONDITION.

DID JRS GET THAT? LOL..............................................................................

what do you mean "if" we lose to the chargers??? "When" is more appropriate

The Browns gave us the ball at their 47. We needed ONE FIRSTDOWN to get, at least, within range of a FG attempt. Couldn't do it. The play calling was a demonstration of pure desperation. I don't think the guy behind the play calling has any faith in the unit to execute a series of plays. That's what I came away with.

Well, the 2011 season was a lot of fun.
I'd like to thank the entire Miami Dolphin organization for giving me my Sundays back.

Perhaps, I will try again next year.

Outstanding post!!

WOW SOMEONE HERE EVEN CREATED THIER OWN LITTLE IMAGINARY CHEERLEADING CREW!

LOL......................................................................

Yes we play the Chargers next week which in effect means that the Chargers are getting a Bye week next week.

Go Guppies...I mean...I mean Go Dolphins!

Oh, I see you're also one of those guys who adds "LOL" to the end of their own posts to convince someone (maybe themselves) it is the least bit funny or clever.

Yawn.

EVEN GOT YOU CHASING WORDS THAT DONT EXIST. WHAT AN IDIOT!

LOL.................................................................

It's not the players, its the coaching. The team looks unprepared each week.

We are being out-coached, and the play calling blows.

It's a shame. We have to start from stratch, because I dont see this team making a turn around in the future.

Stephen Ross is a cancer!

JRS,

TELL YOUR MOM OVER AT THE SHELICKING FACTORY I SAID HELLO. SHE GAVE ME THE SHINIEST KNOB IN THE COUNTY!

LOL....................................................................

JRS, are you still here?

Chupa, Look my friend, you can hate Henne all you want. He is one of maybe 3 that has shown improvement o this entire team. and the pieces around him are broken. To blast him right now is WRONG. there are at least 6 other areas to complain about fealistically than Henne.

Tonny, Im a season ticket holder and a business owner. Ive felt cheated longer than this year alone on false promises and hope the fins seem to sell every year. And we as fans should all feel ripped off for the product they put on the field and the national joke this franchise has become.

Besides my point is a critique of the writer of this blog, obviously you still dont get business sense, as in, is it business sense to keep buy these tix to the games? Im starting to rethink it....

I know some idiots are happy about this news, b/c they think that one player will make us a super bowl team. But if you're a free agent or even a rookie, why would you want to play for an owner w/ a reputation of intentionally makes his team bad to lower costs? That's what the Bengals do, is this guy serious.

I wouldn't come here. If this is true, it's disgusting, and Ross should be punished by the NFL. This is a team w/ some big holes, but its also a talented team on the cusp of being pretty good. If we have a Right Tackle, and a better tight end, I guarantee we are at least 1-2, if not 2-1. I know that there were players out there we could have gotten, hell NE picked up a pro-bowl Right Guard that they didn't even need, I'm sure we could made a move. If we didn't b/c this guy is tanking this team, he shouldn't be the team owner.

HEY SAL MARINO, U GOT IT RIGHT. MR ROBBIE
LOVED THE CITY & THE GAME. AFTER HIM, CAME
THESE OTHER CLOWNS, THAT DON'T KNOW ABOUT
THE GAME. IT'S ONLY A WAY OF MAKING MONEY.
HUIZENGA MADE A BUNDLE. ROSS OVERPAID FOR
THE TEAM. NOW HE'S PANICKING, BECAUSE HE'IS
LOSING A TON OF MONEY. U KNOW WHAT: THE ONLY
WAY TO MAKE BACK U'R MONEY, IS SPENDING S LOT
MORE IN GOOD COACHES,GM,& PLAYER. OR BETTER
YET, SELL THE TEAM TO SOMEONE LIKE MR ROBBIE
MR KRAFT, MR JOHNSON, MR WILSON,ETC.

No coach could win with this team. Sparano should be praised for being able to keep the first three games close. I think Ireland has set this team up for failure so they can draft Andrew Luck. Anyone who knows anything about football knows that Reggie Bush is not an everydown RB. They got rid of Crowder for no reason. No improvements were made to the secondary. Pouncey was a waste of a pick in the first round. He still can't keep his snaps down and is not a very good blocker. They could have had McKinnie, instead they settle for Colombo. They are $8 million under the cap. Money could have been spent to improve this team. Instead, every offseason move has made the team worse than last year. The team doesn't want to win. Fans should stop going to the games.

FOLKS KEEP TALKING ABOUT LUCK, LUCK , LUCK.....first off, if ROSS is TOO CHEAP to pay for players now , what makes you think he'll pay for a 1st draft franchise type QB? 2nd, WHAT MAKES YOU THINK IRELAND (he'll probably still be here because ross is that stupid) will be intellengent enough to pick him anyway?! The guy has past over AT LEAST 8 QBs in free agency or drafts SINCE HE's BEEN in CHARGE!!!! UNLESS ROSS GOES, thise team will be the new DETROIT LIONS FOR YEARS !!

Why does DyingBreed always talk about male genetalia?

I wish you would all stop blaming my boss for this team's ineptitude. He's really a swell guy.

What is the matter with all of you???

If Dan F'n Carpenter made his field goals, like he is paid to do, our team would be 2-1.

osted by: JPAO | September 26, 2011 at 12:54 PM

But, he didn't and we're not. It's been like this for 3 years now. If it wasn't Carpenter, it'd be someone else making mistakes. That's been the history here.

Ask yourself this question. Why does Carpenter still have a job when by your logic, he cost us 2 games and....

Benny Sapp didn't cost us ANY games & he's unemployed? The big TD play he gave up, when the game was already decided, came after he made the only real memorable play our D has made all year to get us back in that game which we squandered.

The ONLY conclusion you can come to is that this coach & FO have no clue as to what they're being paid to know how to do. Carrol is awful & they cut Sapp instead. Carpenter misses fg's & he doesn't even have competition?

Until we get a competent coach & GM, you can continue to pile up the excuses & what if's all year long.

Sadly, they aren't going to translate into wins.

you keep the team under cap.... to tease the new FO and Coach into thinking they will have $$ to play with.....

Sparano should be praised for being able to keep the first three games close. Anyone who knows anything about football knows that Reggie Bush is not an everydown RB.

Posted by: SunnyDee | September 26, 2011 at 01:33 PM

My vote for dumbest post of the century. The entire post is really stupid, but the excerpt above - first he praises Sparano, then says anyone who knows anything about football knows Bush is not an every down back.

Well dunce brain, why is the coach you are praising continuing to use him as an every down back? Why? When Thomas is already clearly better.

AGAIN ARMANDO YOU ARE WRONG WE HAVE THE SAME DEFENSE FROM LAST YEAR, EXCEPT CROWDER AND WE CAN'T STOP ANYBODY, IT IS COACHING AND LACK OF IT , AND LAZY PLAYERS THAT ARE COUNTING THEIR MONEY.NO WINNERS ON THIS TEAM, THEY GAVE UP THE LAST GAME OF THE YEAR AGAINST THE PATS LAST SEASON AND HAVE SHOWN NO LIFE SINCE, WE THE FANS DESERVE BETTER!

i would not say it was the same d but fairly close. JT is not a winner for sure.

The all front office and Owner are DUMP

WOW!!! visiting these blogs just reminds me how common sense isnt so common anymore, some rant about moving the team, some rant about the owner puprosely throwing away a season, others just rant to each other. Thx for reminding me why I should never throw my 2 cents in here its just lost amongst all the uneducated comments in here...

for those that have faith and post logical and reasonble opinions, god bless you and keep the faith, ive lost mine already

I'd like to provide one last bit of input before I head over to Lucy's for some more self-inflicted abuse...Let Tony go, install Daboll as the interim HC (really, not kidding)and let him continue to call plays.

Do it now, don't wait.

Since this is salary cap day.....

Henne, with his pitifully paltry contract, is the team's MVP. Special mention to D. Thomas, the fabulous Hartline, and our punter.

I wrote you an e-mail a long time ago Armando about the failures of Wayne Huizenga as an owner. There was the Jimmy Johnson affair, the Wanstadt error, the Saban fiasco and the ill advised hiring of Cam Camaron. Yet I said then and I say now more than ever the worst thing Wane Huizenga ever did for this franchise, and there were a ton of wrong moves, was the selling to Stephen Ross. This man has taken the Titanic and is cruising the ocean to see how many more ice burgs he can hit. As long as Stephen Ross is owner we are doomed as a franchise.

I watched to Henne conference and I don't think he means that the team is full a quitters. Nor does our FO like losing. There has to be something going on within this organization that is causing this ship to sink. I think our pass defense yesterday was a product of having corners learn to play on just one side of the field rather then just matching up on certain recievers.

Agreed on your 1:41 post Joe. It's mostly the Coach/GM.

But try this on for size (just trying to figure out WHY it's been this way for so long). Yesterday on Countdown, Parcells said if the organization isn't all on the same page (from GM to Coaches to personnel, etc.) then it's hard to right the ship (in so many words).

We're discussing Nolan etc. You think maybe (like last year with Henning), Sparano gives too much deference to his OC/DC and doesn't give them both an overall game strategy he'd like executed? You know, maybe he offers suggestions here and there, but overall he just stays out of their way. Then, the DC will do whatever he wants. The OC does whatever he wants, and there's no "all in" from everyone involved.

If the team knew, ok, this is our identity, this is what we're about offensively and defensively, it might be better to implement it. But if the DC is saying one thing, the OC is saying something else, they're both disjointed and not playing AS A TEAM!

Of course, that's squarely the HC's fault, HE should be the one to bring that cohesion together, and instruct both Coordinators how HE wants HIS team to play.

What do you think about that theory?

Of course, the solution is get a new HC. Not sure it solves all the personnel problems, but at least it gives the team to have a HC who knows how to manage an entire organization (obviously something Sparano knows nothing about).

It's like Miami is in a race for not only Luck but for L.A. too.

Armando, if what you are writting is correct then one has to assume that Stephen Ross and possibly his confidant, Jeff Ireland, set up Tony Sporano to fail so they can do this year what they tried to do last year and that is to hire a name coach. This is all well and good except what name coach would want to coach here knowing that the owner is such a scum bag that he would resort to such underhanded ways to assure failure for the head coach. Any way you slice it the Miami Dolphins franchise today is a dumpster full of stink.

Brandon Marshall quit many times in that game. I really wish Henne meant to say it and is calling out Marshall, that would show he owns a new set down below.

I am sick of Brandon Marshall.

I'm not sure what this article is saying...the Dolphins spent money on players this year...kept a few that were on the team from last year...and frankly have added a few so called weapons that they didn't have...so what does Ross have to do with them losing? The owner doesn't throw the football, catch the football, doesn't make tackles or block....players do....and the Dolphin players aren't doing their jobs well. If I have to blame Ross for anything it's that he didn't upgrade headcoach when he had the chance.

Ross: "Hello, Jeff Fisher. Would you cbe interested in coaching the Miami Dolphins"?

Fisher: "Love to".

Ross: "Great! I can only pay you about $200,00 a year though. I'm still on the hook for Sparano's salary for 3 more years because I gave a guy I have no confidence in a 4 year extention".

Fisher: (Laughing hysterically) "No thanks Mr. Ross. I'll just wait for an owner to call that might know what the hell he is doing".

DC, it would certainly be nice if everyone is on the same page & working as a unit(coaches).
I haven't heard of any dysfunction that way. But, I woulnd't be surprised if there was a rift here or there.

This is the model Parcells brought in. Ireland & Sparano are disciples of it. If Ireland remains, he will try to run the same model without Sparano.

That's why Ireland MUST go with him. There are no 2 ways around it. Keeping either of them, ensures the philosophy doesn't change. This team needs an enema, top to bottom & a major infusion of talent!

I am not sure why we are mad at Ross either.

He is not a football mind, and he left football decisions in the hands of the fools that were here before he took the team over.

He tried to replace these fools and lost out to the 49ers. there were no other REAL good options out there.

He left these fools here and did not spend a crap load of money that these fools could waste.

Now he is gonna fire these fools, and hopefully that will be end of fools coaching this team, fool!

What else is new? Ross bought the team from Huizenga and with the team came Wayne's Book of Procedures entitled "How to Make Money in the NFL (Give the Fans Entertainment, Bad Football And They Will Come)". But they made one mistake: Fans are tired of paying for a losing team. It has been going on for more than twenty-five years.

Good post Joe @ 2:20.

DC and Joe. What jersey you wearin to the Giants game? I think Joe is McDuffie, that is great, is it a REAL jersey or Replica?

Loved McDuffie!
