Dolphins' Ross may be one who needs to 'stop quitting'

CLEVELAND -- Perhaps it was a parapraxis. Or perhaps it was just a tragically constructed sentence.

Either way, Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne uttered this sentence after the Dolphins 17-16 loss to the Browns on Sunday: "I know one thing about these guys," Henne said, "they're not going to stop quitting."

Ouch.

Look, the Dolphins haven't quit. Players haven't. Coaches haven't. They are not getting results because they're not good enough or smart enough or whatever other reason you might cite. But because they quit?

No way.

Here's someone I fear might have quit on this team to a degree: Owner Stephen Ross.

My column in today Miami Herald discusses the topic.

The column discusses how Ross may be as much at fault for Miami's problems as the players and coaches. Why? The man apparently hasn't been fully invested in player acquisition this year.

In short, the column tells you where the Dolphins rank in player expenditure this year. It is a terrible ranking, perhaps the worst the team has ever had. And that, against the backdrop of Miami being second in the NFL behind only the New York Giants in player salaries in 2009, is stark.

So why the significant change? Simply, the Dolphins have been losing money at an alarming rate this year. So they're trying to trim back in certain areas. Player salaries is apparently one of those.

It is so well-known within the organization that two sources have suggested to me Ross has quit on his team this year and set them up for failure.

As the column tells you, I tried to get answers about this and other matters from Ross. Chased him as he was leaving Cleveland Browns Stadium. He didn't want to answer any questions.

Well, until he does, the questions will linger: Has Ross set up the Dolphins to fail this year because he limited expenditures on player acquisitions?

The evidence is damning.

I spoke too soon. I do have something to add because I just read this and wanted to bang my head against the wall until I passed out but writing will be better for me. Here's what Sparano said;

"Though Thomas is averaging 4.9 per carry compared with Bush’s 2.9 this season, Sparano said, “Reggie is the No. 1 running back right now.” He said he used Bush at least for a portion of every series Sunday and “I think that’s probably the way I’m going to use him until I’m proven otherwise."

Proven otherwise? Am I in the twilight zone? What hasn't been proven too this guy. 4.9/2.9 Tony! Do the math! Thomas is running like a beast and Reggie is getting arm tackled and you're going to stick with him as your #1? You are clueless and every day you open your mouth it becomes more clear. Hey someone wake me up when Sparano is let go. Can't even believe this garbage, you couldn't make this crap up if you tried!

There is nothing to gain by winning 2 or 3 games.
We have an opportunity to go back in time and correct the Long instead of Ryan fiasco.
Say what you want, but ask any NFL coach if they had to put their career on the line, who would they pick? Luck or Henne.

By the way any comparison with Luck and Leaf is crazy. Luck went to Stanford and came back to try and win a national title. Leaf is like luck except for the most important thing....BRAINS!!!

The rest of the blog is pretty much good football talk.....

no complaints here.....

Were 0-3, when was the last time Miami won a game that they really had to have? Answer, not for along time, why dose it always seem lately that Miami is just a boreing team (No Heart,) being from Connecticut and a Miami Dolphin Fan since 1971. I, like most of my fellow Dol-Fans, are very concerned for the Future of our Team, until "We" the fans make it uncomfortable for this regeme, things will not improve.

Please stop thinking about Sparano....he's a dead man walking. Only a matter of time now. Think Ireland. He's the other part of the problem. It's like a skin cancer......you have to make sure the doctor cuts it all out

Sparano can't coach, and Ireland can't find talent, so whats the differance? If and when Sparano is Fired, Ireland will be right behind him.

I said this back in Aug.that Ross won't let this regime mortgage next year's product to sucseed.

I say it's time to get rid of Ireland and get a real Personnel man in there. This guy keeps picking up these Dallas rejects and could have gotten better players elsewhere. It's Ireland that has to go. He's the BUM

How many WASHED up Dallas scrubs are we gonna bring in????!!!!

so apparently Phins are talking to Cincy about possible trade for Palmer. This poor excuse for a front office better not trade away another high draft pick.

Armando. You must be a idiot to write this, Are you kidding me. Its his job to write the checks. Mr Irleand and Mr Sprano to run the team. How can you sit here and say that.He has a obligation to use 95% of the salary cap .. He has. Does he decide what dumb ass plays that have been called thre last three weeks. Ah no. So please before Mr Ross kicks you out of the stadium for being a dumb ass think of what your writing first. Stick to what you no.. Oh yall what was it that you no again..

Ross and Loria...our country's finest sports franchise investors...

Welcome to Miami ...

Nice! Mr Ross

HEY EVERYBODY GUESS WHAT STOP KNOCKING HENNE HE IS ON PACE TO HAVE A 4,500 YARDS PASSING AND MORE TD'S THEN INT'S HE HAS 4 TDS AND 3 INTS AND HE SHOULD ONLY REALLY HAVE 1 INT 2 OF THE INT'S WERE THE LAST PLAYS OF THE GAME THE ONE AT THE BROWNS AND THE OTHER AT NEWENGLAND JUST TRYING TO MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING THE NEW ENGLAND GAME HE JUST THROUGH IT UP WITH NOTHING ON THE LINE HE JUST THRE IT UP FDOR GRABS THE SAME FOR THE BROWNS NOBODY OPEN AND JUST TRIED TO MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN SO HE SHOULD ONLY HAVE 1 INT U TAKE THAT AWAY GUESS WHAT HE HAS A qb RATING OVER A 100 WHICH PUTS HIM IN THE TOP 5 IN QNS IN THE LEAGUE FOR RATING AND HE IS IN THE TOP 10 FOR YARDS ALSO HE IS 4TH IN THE LEAGUE IN SACXS WHICH GUESS WHAT MEANS HE WOULD BE 3 TIMES BETTER IF HE HAD TIME TO THROW THE BALL NOT GET HIT AS SOON AS HE TAKES HIS 3 STEP DROP BACK AND WITH THAT HE STILL HAS ALL THEM DANG YARDS AND AS FAR AS SCORING DANG HE MOVES THE DOLPHINS UP AND DOWN THE DIELD EVERYTIME BUT WHEN HE GET'S INTO THE REDZONE SPARANO AND DABAOLL CALL A DUMB SORRY PLAY THE LINE FAULTERS HE GET'S SACKED OR THE WIDE RECIVERS DON'T GET OPEN GUESS WHAT NOT HIS FAULT EVEN BRADY MANNING OR EVEN MARINO IN HIS PRIME COULDENT DO BETTER SO STOP HATING ON HENNE GROW UP! NOW IF THE DOLPHINS END UP 0-16 1-15 2-12 AND GET THE 1ST OVERALL PICK YES I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE ANDREW LUCK HE IS SUPPOST TO BE THE NEXT BEST THING AT qb HE IS BEING SAID TO BE A GUARENTEE FRANCHISE QB! BUT GUESS WHAT U NEVER KNOW WITH QB'S HE COULD BE A FLOP. ALSO THERE WILL BE ALOT OF TEAMS OUT THERE GOING CRAZY OVER LUCK TEAMS WILL THROW THERE HOLE DRAFT AWAY TO GET HIM AND EVEN 2 YEARS OF DRAFT TO GET HIM SINCE HE CAN'T GET A 70 MILLION CONTRACT ANYMORE SO TEAMS WILL BE HOPPING UP THERE TO TRY AND DRAFT HIM FOR 30 MILLION! SO IF THE DOLPHINS DO GET THE 1ST PICK I WOULD SHOP THAT PICK TRY AND MOVE FROM #1 TO #2 OR #3 IN THE DRAFT AND MAKE THEM PAY BIG AND I MEAN BIG NORMALLY TO MOVE FROM 1 TO 3 U WOULD GET LIKE A 1ST 2ND AND 4TH AND THEN A 1ST OR 2ND IN THE NEXT YEARS DRAFT! BUT GUESS WHAT IT'S DIFFERENT IT'S ANDREW LUCK! SO I WOULD SHOP IT AND GO FROM 1ST TO LIKE 2ND OR 3RD AND GET THIS YEARS 2012 1ST RD PICK 2ND RD PICK AND 3RD PICK AND THEN GET THERE NEXT YEARS 2013 1ST RD AND 2ND ROUND PICK WHICH TRUST ME A TEAM WILL DO IT AND GUES WHAT IF U CAN HAVE THIS YEARS LET'S SAY 3RD PICK IN THE DRAFT PLUS HAVE THE 33RD AND 35TH PICK 65TH 67TH PICK PLUS THE REST OF T HE DRAFT THAT WOULD BE AWSOME PLUS THEN IN 2013 HAVE 2 1ST RD PKS AND 2 2ND RD PKS THAT WOULD BE AWSOME! BECAUSE THEN WITH THE 3RD PICK U COULD GO OUT AND DRAFT OFFENSIVE TACKLE MATT KALIL WHICH THEY PUT HIM AT A LEFT TACKLE WHICH MEANS HE WOULD BE A DOMINANT RT SO THAT MEANS THEN U WOULD HAVE LONG THE BEST LT IN THE LEAGUE POUNCY PROBLY GOING TO BE 1 OF THE BEST CENTERS IN THE LEAGUE WITH HIS BROTHER AND THEN 1 OF THE BEST IF NOT THE BEST RT IN THE LEAGUE WITH MATT KALIL HE LOOKS LIEK A BEAST AND IS PROJECTED TO BE A TOP LT IN THE LEAGUE WHICH MEANS HE PROBLY WOULD BE THE BEST RT IN THE LEAGUE! THEN WITH ARE 33RD PICK IN THE DRAFT I WOULD DRAFT THE BEST GUARD OUT THERE IN THE DRAFT WITH THE 33RD PICK AND WITH THE 35TH PICK I WOULD DRAFT ANOTHER GUARD WHICH DRAFTING GUARDS WITH THE 33RD AND 35TH U WOULD GET THE 2 BEST GUARDS IN COLLEGE AND PROBLY THEY WOULD BE 2 TOP 5 GUARDS IN THE LEAGUE BECAUSE A 33RD AND 35TH IS BASICALLY 1ST ROUNDERS AND THERE ARE ALOT OF AWSOME GUARDS THIS YEAR COMMING OUT OF COLLEGE! SO THEN THE DOLPHINS WOULD SOLIFY THERE OFFENSIVE LINE THEY WOULD HAVE A BEAST OF THE LINE NOT TO MENTION THE HIGHEST PAID WHICH THEY ALREADY HAVE! BUT THEN THEY COULD TRADE COLUMBO,CAREY,AND RICHIE INCONGNITO! AND THEY COULD PROBLY GET LIKE A 5TH FOR INCGONITO AND MAYBE A 6TH FOR CAREY AND PROBLY JUST CUT CULUMBO CAUSE NOBODY WOULD GIEV UP A PENNY FOR HIM CAUSE HE SUCKS! BUT THINK THEN WE COULD MAKE OUT TEAM HAVE THE BEST O-LINE FROM LT TACKLE ALL THE WAY TO RT WITH 1ST ROUND PICK AT LT RT AND CENTER AND ALL YOUNG IN THERE PRIME AND 2 2ND RD PICKS AT GUARDS WHICH BASICALLY ARE VERY HIGH 1ST ROUNDERS THAT ARE AWSOME THEN WITH THE REST OF OUR DRAFT FROM RD 3-7 GO DEFFENSE! THEN IN 2013 DRAFT WE WILL HAVE 2 1ST AND 2 2ND ROUND PICKS AND SINCE WE ARE GOING TO GET A TEAM IN THE TOP 3 DRAFT PICK WE WILL PROBLY HAVE A TOP 5 DRAFT PICK IN THE 2013 DRAFT PLUS OUR PICK BUT THEN WITH A GREAT LINE AND NEW COACH HENNE WILL I THINK JUST TEAR IT UP BECAUSE HE WON'T BE GETTING HIT AS SOON AS HE HIKES THE BALL! BUT IF HE FAILS THEN IN 2013 WE TAKE 1 OF OUR 1ST ROUNDERS AND DRAFT A QB AND IF WE WANT TO MOVE UP TO #1 TO GET THE BEST QB WE CAN DO THAT BECAUSE WE WILL HAVE 2 1ST ROUND PICKS AND 2 2ND RD PICKS AND PROBLY A TOP 5 PICK DEFFINELTY A TOP 10 PICK AND IF WE FAIL WE WILL PROBLY HAVE A TOP 5 AND TOP 10 PICK WHICH WILL DEFFINELTY MOVE US UP TO DRAFT A QB #1! SO THAT IS WHAT I SAY WE SHOULD DO IF WE SUCK THIS YEAR AND HAVE THE 1ST OVERALL PICK IN THE DRAFT IN 2012!

theres no focus with this team anymore. how much u wanna bet the players spend off days on south beach. too many distractions down here and no discipline. thats a coaching prob. no focus at home what so ever. its a travesty to the orange bowl and our once proud home field adavantage. find a coach that can keep player focus or just move the team.

How can you blame the owner, but not put any blame on the media? You are high if you dont think the media plays any roll ,especially local.

"iNHERiT THE WiND" http://t.co/1r8Sd73q http://t.co/tpwb2kE1 (@WEstillCANTwinAThome) WHY? THE DOLPHiNS ARE EQUALLY AS BAD ON THE ROAD NOW! http://t.co/gBmisSo5 "TRUMP THE CHUMP iS BACK ON THE STUMP - WHO WOULD HAVE THUNK - SAY iT AiNT SO - THE DONALD iS STiLL A NO SHOW" quitter

Let me say this I live in New England and have been taking a betting for years.I call Tony let's kick field goal and Brand I drop balls. What this team needs a new coach .So Mr Ross If you have any BALLs Get a new coach Today!!! John G Bill C Have them this year so next year we will be a team they talk about not make jokes about!!!!! If you care at all please show us and the stands will fill and we will have a winning team!!!! Do something!!!!!!!

Ross is pathetic as an owner and needs to go! Coach Sparano is a good coach and it looks like the "real" players want to play for him. Ross on the other hand is not a "Football" guy and has no clue. He and Ireland need to go on a fast traine out of South Beach quickly!!!!

Armando,
You are absolutely right. To take this one step further, it all started with Wayne H. hired the Tuna. This was a huge mistake just look at his track record over the last 19 years. The Tuna is a quitter. Then Wayne sells the team to Ross. This guy borrowed money to buy the team, altough some would call it "finding investors". Ross has zero football intelligence and questionable wallet. He listens to Carl Peterson, a loser in my book. What has Peterson accomplished besides running the Chiefs into the ground? As long bad decisions are being made at the top don't expect a winner coming out of Miami.

I put most of the blame on the GM. Our secondary was obviously garbage last year and they did nothing to fix it. Highlighting player expenditure is right. This was the year to steal a FA and we didnt do it. Grabbing Asante Samuel or DRC would have been nice. Our defense would be much much better if we had a #1 corner that we could count on. Sean Smith and Vontae Davis should be in competition for the #2 spot. Neither one hacks it as a top corner. Id rather have seen them shotgun secondary players in the draft if they werent going to spend money rather than picking up gates and that back-up DT, we could have depth where we need to develop talent at secondary.
I like the new offense so far but our red-zone playcalling has been terrible. Reggie Bush also hasn't been used right. At first Thomas was injured so that was understandable but now we should see Bush coming in on 3rd downs and red-zone plays so he can create mismatches and release as a receiver. The team is still finding its new offensive identity.

I'm so sick of watching my team lose games that they should have won. I agree with the people who have said that this last game we had the ball at the 45 yard line and just need the ball to be moved 10 yards to give Carpenter (even though hasn't been great this year either)a slim chance to kick a 60-63 yard fg which he has the leg to do, but what happends 4 straight pass plays. One was a deep pass that wasn't even close to being a completion. I don't want to blame Henne because he had a great game, but statistics have shown that he is the worst 2 minute QB in the league. How many chances had he had to move us down the field with a chance to win. PLENTY and have failed on every occasion by not completing passes or throwing an interception. He looks good when he is not under the gun, but when it comes to clutch, he just doesn't have it.

why wont ross give the keys to bill cowher. theres a coach that will hold these soft players feet to the fire.produce or get the hell out of town. we want cowher.

joe robbie has to rolling in his grave right now. (thanks kids.greedy little bastards)

Nice try Armando, trying to switch everyone to Ross as the problem. Last i checked, Ross didnt get beat in the endzone sunday. Ross isnt calling and executing the red zone plays. or lack there of. As a matter of fact, Ross hasnt thrown one pass, made one tackle or called one play. Ireland ultimately scouts these guys and evaluates there potential talent. Ross woudnt know a football if it hit him in the face.

This season is getting out of control. Suck For Luck? We're still in September! Read what REAL Dol-Fans think about this mess: http://wp.me/p1uuxm-1u1

People wake up... The Miami Dolphins are nothing but a toy and a way to loose money for Mr. Ross' other really profitable businesses!!!!!!!..... DO YOU THINK HE REALLY CARES IF THEY WIN OR LOOSE?? STILL ONE OF THE MOST VALUED FRANCHISES IN PRO SPORTS.... SO HE WINS ON BOTH ENDS

Got to stop running Bush into the line. He is useless that way. The experiment is over. pass into the flat for him.

Spurano can take his defiant, cocky below average record over the years and hit the road. He has PROVEN he's not head coaching material.

Many of you are right- bring in Luck under these coaches and you would be out of luck. Marshall one of the best in the game with Denver- with Miami he's ok. Bush wins superbowl and is a pretty good player with the saints- here- under utilized.

Hey Spurano we are not bashing BUSH- we are bashing YOU paying him millions to sit the bench on 1st and 2nd down then bring him in on 3rd down to (not go out for a pass) but to pass block. We are such a talented team we can take a star who's getting star money and have him sit out most of our offensive plays. Coach Spurano your not using your brain. They guy is a game changer- but he's sitting out more then playing. C'MON MAN

Mark in Toronto- Marshall is awesome and one of the best in the league. If he was on a better team, better coached and had a better QB he would be putting up insane numbers. I feel bad for the guy- since he came here is stats fell off the face of the earth. He's thinking worst move I ever made.

Call Bill Cowher Today

Really??? Ross doesn't call the stinky plays or suit up, so it's his fault??? Not hardly...Coaching & front office decisions on cuts, drafts, trades. All have have been horrible decisions for the past 5 years!

It may be time to go to the broadcast booth and jerk Clamming Chowder out of there and back on to the field. The ILB is the defensive QB and Burnett has not impressed me at all. The Dolphins defense jelled with Chowder in there.

Lets face it,this team has been going downhill since we lost the '85 Championship Game to New England.
Who do we blame for that?

Henne and Sparano have to go. Bring in Cowher and all this changes in two years.

I HAVE SAID THIS FROM TH BEGINING. ROSS CAN'T AFFORD THE TEAM, AND HAS NO KNOWLEGE OF HE GAME. WHY OU YOU THINK PURCELLS TOOK THE FAST LANE OUT OF TOWN. hE PLAIN OUT SAID THAT ROSS DOES NOT KNOW WHAT HE IS DOING AND SELLING OFF BITS AND PIECES OF THE TEAM TO "THE STARS" MAKES NOT, A WINNING NFL TEAM/. ROSS NEEDS TO DO THE FINS FANS A BREAK, SELL THE TEAM.

AT LEAST WITH WAYNE, NO MATTER HOW INCOMPENTANT, HE HAD A BIG WALLET AND WAS WILLING TO INVEST. ROSS IS A LOSER, PURCELLS SAW IT ALL, AND DID THE BEST THING FOR BILL, HE BOLTED.

QUESTION : WHY DID ROSS REQUEST HOME GAMES BE PLAYED AT 4PM INSTEAD OF 1PM. ARE WE TRYING TO MAKE THE VISITING TEAM MORE COMFORTABLE ? WHAT AN IDIOT !!! THERES A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN TEMPERATURE. DOES HE REALIZE THAT THE NOONTIME HEAT IS WHAT GIVES US OUR HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE ?

Remember, Ross is a businessman first, we do have some players to work around next season, but after his big mistake with the coaching issue and how bad he looked he has to have a solid reason to drop him this year thus a bad recored. gives him a better chance in the draft and the cap money he will spend this year will go to a coach (bring them in this year to get familer with the talent and then to handel there draft as they see fit) im hoping its chucky.....

It's sad how far this franchise has fallen since the butt kicking inflicted by the Raiders in the 2000 division playoffs. In that game, the Dolphins had a great opening drive then JF throws a pick six and the team went catatonic and were shutout 27-0. Since then, I think the 'Phins have had 23 quarterbacks (exaggeration), five coaches, two owners, three Patriot SB championships, 0-6 against the expansion Texans, zero playoff wins, five losing seasons (only two such in the 26 seasons under the leadership of the Reverend Shula) and having squandered the best NFL franchise record since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.
Tony Sparano can only work with the players given to him. Sparano is not responsible for missed blocking assignments, blown pass coverages, dropped passes by receivers with stone hands, poor tackling and Reggie Bush's inexplicable fumbles. The problems start at the top with ownership, not the coach. The teams that win have great ownership (e.g., Joe Robbie's Dolphins, Steelers, Patriots, Colts, Ravens) and make good decisions. The present 'Phins owner is trying to raise cash, ingratiate himself with celebrities and just happy to be part of NFL ownership.
Remember when the Patriots, Bills, Jets and the Colts were awful franchises? The Dolphin franchise is now the division stink bomb. Ownership needs to get serious and realize winning is the best way to raise cash and earn respect.
