Dolphins claim RB Steve Slaton from Houston

The Dolphins have claimed and been awarded running back Steve Slaton off waivers from the Houston Texans.

The team assumes the remaining portion of running back''s $1.2 million salary. And now it gets interesting in the backfield.

Slaton comes to the Dolphins from a team that had a crowded stable of runners. The Dolphins have a crowded stable also. But only one of those players -- rookie Daniel Thomas -- is so far producing to satisfactory levels.

The same cannot be said of primary back and starter Reggie Bush, who has only 80 yards on 28 carries. Bush has also been nursing a tender groin.

Slaton comes to the Dolphins in his fourth NFL season. His best year was 2008 when he gained 1,282 yards and averaged 4.8 yards a carry in 16 games. It hasn't been nearly as good since.

In 2009 his production dropped to only 437 yards and a 3.3 average in 11 games and then he had only 93 yards on 19 carries all of last season. That season, Slaton fumbled four times in four games early in the season, leading to his limited use. He worked his way back into good graces but then on Dec. 9 sustained a shoulder injury and was placed on injured reserve.

The Texans have Arian Foster, the NFL rushing champion from a year ago, and Ben Tate in their backfield so Slaton was expendable. This year Slaton had 20 yards on seven carries, a 2.9 average.

The Dolphins are clearly searching for talent at running back since parting ways with Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown. Earlier this year they signed, cut, signed and cut again running back Larry Johnson.

They've also worked out players such as Clinton Portis and Tiki Barber. No, none of this means Slaton will compete for the starting job.

It is not yet clear whom the Dolphins will cut.

List of candidates: Will Yeatman (they can always put him on practice squad), Nate Jones, Roberto Wallace, Marlon Moore, Ikaika Alama-Francis, Ryan Baker, or, yes, Phillip Merling. This is just speculation on my part. Just stirrin' [poopie], as I was told by someone within the organization today.

[Yup, yet another update: The unlucky player cut is Ryan Baker. Good guy. Tough guy.]

Damn it Yeah! AKA Armando Salguero

Wishbone time with Slaton, Thomas and Bush. Option for speed to either side and power up the middle. What the hell, can't hurt!

Kind of like that move. Slaton produced when given the chance in Houston. He's young and comes relatively cheap.

WTH are we going to do with Slaton? Run him in the middle like for 2 yards like Bush.

New Coach Wanted -- Henne's completion % is at 56%. That puts him at 26th in the NFL. Not good enough!!! He is part of the problem. The other part is the folks that drafted him and the coach.

The ignorance here continues to be astounding. That's why I hardly post here.

Anyways, Henne is part of the problem. You could accurately say the least of the problems.

He needs to improve in the 4th quarter and the red zone. What a coincidence. It seems in his first two seasons as a Starter The Brain Trust constantly pulled him out in the red zone for the wildcat. Especially in the 4th quarter.

Geez, I just can't figure out why this is where he needs the most work, Duh?

But ah, to point to his completiong percentage as proof of anything. Psssssft! Add in Marshall's drops ALONE and Henne is above the league average.

Brilliant, Lets Suck for Luck!

Or Quinn, or Vince Young, or Garrard, or Kold, or Orton.......etc, etc add nausem............

PS: How is it that all these new sign in names show up and know all about the posters and conversations dating back to previous seasons?

It couldn't be because their proven flavor of the month knee jerkers and they don't want anyone knowing how hard they were swinging on Quinn and Youngs nads..............?

Anywhoo, I'm a real Die Hard Fin Fan, but I want us to lose ALL our games! Yeah, lets lose one for the Gipper! Let's Suck for Luck!

Another blog another post Dol-fans go eat a dick. Your whole team sucks.

That season, Slaton had a game in which he fumbled four times in four games early in the season, leading to his limited use. He worked his way back into good graces but then on Dec. 9 sustained a shoulder injury and was placed on injured reserve.

Am I getting this right?

Slaton fumbled 16 times in a four game span?

What do we need him for? Bush and Thomas have both fumbled in the red zone, stalling crucial drives and momentum. Possibly even costing us a game or two.

Oh well, they better not cut any of our great TE's to make room for this fumbler!

Don't what to say about this one!!!! we need a lot then RB to help this team!!!

More Kicks in the Nuts by the Dolphins Organization.

We need a Kicker, RT, and DBs. Not another RB.

These Acorns are Turds in disguise.

Don't know what to say about this one! we need a lot more than RB to help this team!!

Saw this one coming.

This team is awesome! 0-4 wooooo!!

they should have claimed ogbonnaya when the texans waived him on sept. 3rd. he would have been a better prospect.

Trade for TEBOW!!! FIRE TONY S, JEFF IRELAND AND ROSS SHOULD FIRE HIMSELF. Maybe DAN THE MAN can coach?

He isn't a former Cowboy, what's going on?

Are they converting him to CB? Last time I looked, this team needed defense before it needed another fumbling RB.

God, when will the incompetence end!?!?!?

Does Slaton know how to block???

Joe,

lol!!!

Why are we claiming another RB off waivers? and eating $1.5 mill of his remaining salary w/ Houston? We have a RB (Thomas). Another brilliant personnel move.

Slaton is needed and Polite isn't?? Just asking???

acorns or rotten apples? i don't think they can tell the difference at this point.

He played with Pat White at West Virginia. Small shifty type of runner.

acorns or rotten apples? i don't think they can tell the difference at this point.

The first thing I would do to turn this franchise around is teach these guys how to stretch.

I would teach them the 'head, shoulders, knees & toes' song.

We'd be 2-1 right now.

Guess I'm on an island with this one. Remember seeing Slaton running effectively between the tackles. Despite their similar size, Slaton may be smaller I think, Bush seems like more of a space/screen guy.

We sign a big name FA running back/Slot receiever/specialist in Bush. Our "Big"(and only) Free Agency "Splash" of the off season.

We use three picks to move up into the second round on a running back that is currently playing well enough to get some offensive rookie of the year considerations.

We have no seam threat TE(though we have 4 TE's on the roster.

We DESPERATELY need AT LEAST two offensive lineman.

Our defense can't tackle or get off the field on third down. Our secondary can't cover a TE or WR to save it's life. We even had to play a rookie CB and he gave up the game clinching TD reception.

SO! Despite all of the above, despite all of our PRESSING NEEDS, what does the braintrust do?

They drive yet another nail in their own coffins!

Once more throwing money at the wrong problem.

Jeff Ireland? Your job is about to come to an end.

Does it really matter anymore this year? We aren't doing anything to address the true weaknesses on the team. TE, RT, and OLB!! Fasano is a great 2nd TE but we need a #1. I saw Clay got targeted ONCE last Sunday....ONCE! Didn't carry the ball at all either. Mark Columblow sucks at pass protection. He requires constant help on passing plays. That takes a receiver out of the picture for Henne to throw to. Wake needs to wake up! He has two token sacks and about 6 total tackles so far. Misi has been Misi(ing) in action. We need to move him inside and get another OLB in the draft next year. Jason has played well, keeping in mind that he's not supposed to be an every down OLB. Our secondary is getting torched because we have no pass rush! Our CBs and Safeties are good, but without a pass rush they'll continue to get gashed. I'm all for getting a "no-miss" QB in the draft, but I'm also ok with keeping Henne as long as we address these other needs once and for all! GEEZ!

Really would someone let the phins know I played football in HS. I am free and willing to play... Hey they have made dumber moves!

Even though Slaton's not another Dallas castoff, we're still picking through Texas Trash Piles!

Jeffy! While you're out could you pick me up a right tackle............and a twelve of Bud?

Twelve of bud? At the rate this season is going I'd say a 12er of 1.75L of jack may make it to our bye week!

Add Reggie to Slot WR, and Deep Threat as well, have Daniel be the # 1 RB and Slaton and reggie on situational downs

my god take some freaking grammer lessons you f*cking white trash idiots. They picked him up for depth and he was a waiver pick up. We have plenty of cap room and we have 2 running backs with lingering injury issues. It's no wonder none of the players have any passion, they all deal with fans like you everyday. Move back to NJ, NY or where you came from. You're not real fans anyway. I hope they pack up and move to Los Angeles. I'll driver the 6 hours to go see them. You homers wont even drive 30 minutes. Stop bitching about Henne too, he can't carry a team with a crappy defense but he's shown a vast improvement this year and you still complain. He could throw for 40 TD's with 3 INT's and you'd all still complain. A**holes

Oh, NOW I understand why we didn't get Bryant McKinnie.

We had to save the cap space...

He isn't a former Cowboy, what's going on?

Schmoe- Houston is close enough. Besides, he'll be great on special teams!

I like the signing....

whats wrong with it.....

It provides DEPTH at a postion of NEED....and YES...RB is a postion of NEED.....

DT started off the seaon hurt...missed the 1st game....I doubt he is completly healthy.....

Bush has been a NON-FACTOR....for what ever reason.....he is injury prone....and already complaining about a groin......

No...we don't need 5 TEs.....so maybe one of them go....but this is not a bad move....and before Arian Foster carved us up last year....i'm pretty sure Slaton did it before that......

Hey, I'll say this. I'd rather have Slaton than Larry Johnson. From the standpoint of upgrading the bottom 3rd of the roster, this is a really good move.

I still wish we had a better O-line. It needs help.

It's about time thing got interesting in the offensive back fiels!!! Now put him in & get Reggie Bush to run back kick offs & punts & occasional WR!!! BEAT THE CHARGERS... GO FINS!!!

About a month ago I said we should pick up Slaton because I had heard Texans might dump me and someone on here pretty much said I was nuts. Not so nutty now.

The real question will be.....

Does he get to tote the rock....or will he never see the feild....like Larry Johnson......

But for some to complain about this signing.....well....I don't get it.....

The funny thing is this.....so many of you cried about DT..,,,cakked him a BUST before he ever played a regular season down......

Now you want him to carry the Dolphins on his backand are hailing him as is he will never be injured or need a break.....

Find some balance people......

Don't get this move at all. Adding another running back to the mix does not correct the red zone problem.

What TS should have his team do is practice the entire week on the red zone efficiency. Also look at the tapes. A lot of bloggers here are blaming Henne for the red zone, but the Phins are just running some stupid base plays. Where are the backs out of the backfield?

This coaching staff ought to design some red zone plays that work to the strengths of the personnel they have. Why not line up Bush in the slot in the red zone? TS is a bad coach. He may be dedicated as Mando has reported, but that doesn't make him good coach.

In all seriousness, if this team was coached by Belichick they would be at least 2-1.

We are gonna move reggie to pr kr duties with special packages on offense thomas #1 slaton#2. We will be great in 2013. Chucky at coach and some offensive weapons i love it.

I can't believe this. Another PATHETIC acquisition. We are getting all the rejects from Texas (Dallas and Houston). With a record like that, why would the Miami Dolphins front office even consider getting this guy?

"my god take some freaking grammer lessons you f*cking white trash idiots. They picked him up for depth and he was a waiver pick up. bobbyd12,

Speaking of grammar, you spelled grammar wrong.

I think some of you are looking at this the wrong way. Yes we need a TE, RT, AND OLB, and RG in my opinion, but no one who is on the waiver wire ,for those positions, would be an upgrade over who we have now. Slaton fills a need because of Bush's injured hamstring. And he's been a 1000 yd rusher in the league. Low risk high reward pick up here.

It's not as if these guys don't know where the weaknesses are, there just aren't any upgrades to be had right now. Don't fabricate things to be mad about. You should still be mad about the fact they didn't fill these needs when the players were available.

Slaton....about 163 carries over the past 3 years (including this one)....

Should be fresh....should be hungry......

sometime a change of pace....is jut what people need.....

lol @ jeff.............i officially man love you

The keys to winning...are in my other pants.

I don't get the bloggers thinking every move this team makes is "pathetic" or "he's a bust". Let the players prove themselves on the field before making some ignorant comment. Look at all the past blogs of "Daniel Thomas is a bust". Because of his recent play, no one is saying he is a bust now.
Further more, go to NFL.com and read Jeff Darlington's article on the Dolphins regression.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d822a43c5/article/clear-regression-in-miami-has-led-to-dolphins-dissension?module=HP11_content_stream

For the record, I'm seeing from Thomas what I thought I saw in the preseason. A quick burst, tough running, 5 yards a whack. Unfortunately, I also saw him fumble trying to leap over the goal line.

I think he's going to be a good back for the fins, but needs to eliminate the dropping of the rock. Red Zone turnovers are the last thing this team and fan base can stomach right now.

Phins78, kris,

not a bad move at all, especially considering that DT was a pre-pre-season bust. Natives are restless and Armando does have a predilection for stirring things up (as they've noticed at Dolphins HQ- not that they have any reason to ever read this insufferably whiny blog).

Slaton was going to make $1.2M this year. we are on the hook for the pro-rated portion. Ricky Williams would have cost us $2M this year, at most. So, which one would you rather have? Remember, Benny Sapp was cut with us having to pay him his $1.2M salary. Ireland is a numb-nut MF.cker! WQhat a genius he is!!

Who's fault is it? (from the Herald's sports page)

Ireland -27
Parcells-27
Sparano-26
Ross- 20

seems about right.

Slaton was a decent player, there so many other problems I don't see how it will make a difference. What tony should do is have a team meeting and find out what is bothering the players when you have several players saying the practices are not focused and the meetings they have no one is paying attention to detail, try to get to the bottom of it. LOOK I DID NOT REALLY EXPECT THAT MUCH FROM THIS SEASON MAYBE 8-8 OR 9-7 AT BEST ,BUT THEY ARE HORRIBLE RIGHT NOW AND THEY SHOULD BE BETTER THEN HORRIBLE THEY SHOULD BE MIDDLE OF THE PACK AT LEAST, BUT THE PLAYERS ARE NOT GIVING IT THEIR FULL EFFORT. AND ALSO HENNE HAS IMPROVED SOME BUT HE IS STILL NOT GOOD ENOUGH, WE NEED SOME KIND OF SHAKE UP PEOPLE, SOMEONE ASS NEEDS KICKED OR SOMETHING!!!

the team has quit the past 2 years near seasons end(last 4 games). they are just quitting earlier this year as their is a leadership void with the present regime.

Is fumbler Slaton was any good he would not have been waived. He sounds like another Reggie Bush...one past it Reggie Bush is enough thankyou. They let Ricky go and now are signing injury prone has beens to cover up.This FO is totally rubbish.

Ricky also had his fumbling problems in Miami.....how soon we forget.....

In 21 rushes this year....Ricky has alreadt FUMBLED...and lost that fumble......

[Yup, yet another update: The unlucky player cut is Ryan Baker. Good guy. Tough guy.]

A tough player.....maybe.....a good player...probably not....Wiki him.....

the dolphins need to draft robert griffin III from baylor...this guy is going to be a superstar, and he will most likely be available when the dolphins pick. it is not too early to look ahead...the season is obviously lost.....

as for slaton, just another example of the front office reaching for others cast-offs instead of having the foresight to make good decisions before the fact...

p.s. what kind of offense do the dolphins want, anyway? i found it very telling that hartline said they didn't have an identity...

line up bush outside and get a mismatch on a lb...don't run him inside...since payton and sparano are such good friends, you would figure that they would know bush is not an every down back...

thomas has been more than adequate..so again, i ask what they are looking for in another running back?
