« Phillip Livas also cut, new PR man might be old returner | Main | 'Unofficial' depth chart has strengths, raises questions »

Dolphins roster moves and what they mean

The Dolphins have announced the roster moves which got them to the mandated 53 man roster:

WAIVED: CB Vincent Agnew, TE Brett Brackett, WR Patrick Carter, G Garrett Chisolm, QB Pat Devlin, TE Dedrick Epps, LB Jonathan Freeny, RB Nic Grigsby, T D.J. Jones, T Matt Kopa, WR Phillip Livas, WR John Matthews, CB Nate Ness, LB David Nixon, QB Kevin O’ Connell, WR Julius Pruitt, S Mark Restelli, LB Robert Rose, TE Mickey Shuler, LB Quinton Spears.

CONTRACTS TERMINATED: S Gerald Alexander, CB Will Allen, NT Ronald Fields, RB Larry Johnson, FB Lousaka Polite,T Ray Willis.

PLACED ON INJURED RESERVE: T Lydon Murtha. A source tells me Murtha suffered a torn ligament in a toe.

WHAT IT MEANS: The Dolphins are at 53 players and some that made it today might not be on the team in a couple of days. The Dolphins are right now searching for a No. 3 QB -- which, by the way, may be a kid added to the practice squad. They have six WRs on the roster so that might be a position where movement yet happens. The club kept six DEs but only three RBs. All this raises questions and makes it clear this team is not complete.

The Dolphins kept Jeron Mastrud over Shuler. Also, John Jerry, a disappointment this camp, makes the team anyway. I suppose the draft pick investment in Jerry from a year ago -- a third rounder -- and the fact he's so young has saved him.

The Dolphins kept 10 linebackers -- five inside linebackers and five outside linebackers.

The Dolphins kept none of their undrafted rookie free agents.

It seems that rookie Frank Kearse beat out the veteran Fields for the backup NT job. That is not quite right, in my opinion. Fields is better than Kearse today. But the Dolphins can always move Randy Starks to NT if starter Paul Soliai is injured for any significant amount of time. So in fact, it seems Fields was not able to beat out Starks for the backup job. Kearse is a project but he's shown flashes and he's a fighter.

By the way, Chester Taylor was cut today by the Chicago Bears. Brandon Meriweather was cut by the New England Patriots. Because both have at least four seasons of experience, they become unrestricted free agents right away. They do not go on the waiver wire to be picked up by whichever team claims them. I hope the Dolphins are on the phone with somebody right now!

The biggest surprise of all this news has to be the cutting of Polite. Tony Sparano gushed about Polite and talked of how you couldn't find legit FBs in today's NFL anymore. He said Polite was one of those valuable guys and said how it would take a lot to convince him Polite had to go.

Well, he got convinced. I do know this, Polite was one of the top 53 on this team. He was a good locker room guy, also. Obviously, the Dolphins found reasons that overcame those assets. He was expensive in that he was going to cost $1.45 million against the cap. The Dolphins save $1.35 million by cutting him. This was the final year of his contract.

I suppose it is possible Polite is signed after the first week of the season at a discount and also without a guarantee for the entire year. But I also think other teams might show some interest in him.

Finally, I cannot stress enough that this does not end the moving and shaking of the Dolphins roster. This is mediocre team by most accounts. It has much work yet to do to be among the NFL's elite. I assume the front office is busy doing some of that work as we speak.

Crappy but couldn't be worse than Sapp.

LOL,

Stupid ALoco, how do 2 qb's go down the same game? Even if it did we only need a guy that could finish out the 4th qtr. Extremely rare will you lose both your 1st and 2nd string qb before the end the 3rd qtr.

Even that's quite a stretch.

Im sure D Thomas could finished up a qtr should by miraculous misfortune the situations occurs. Rest assured a qb would be signed before the next game.

But all of this talk could be totally irrevevalent. The fo could have thier eye on a 3rd string qb as we speak.

LOL.\\\\ I REMEMBER TODAY WHEN DB THE COACH HAS ENDORESED DEVLIN BEFORE HE WAS CUT ...

DB IS LIKE A WOMAN WHO STARTED WORKING IN THE STREETS OF NY ,,,NO SHAME OR DIGNITY OR LITTLE ANY THNG.LOL

Well said Aloco LOL. LOL. LOL.

Tony Sparano...the great offensive line coach from Dallas can't put together a freaking offensive line to save his life. How did he ever get that job in Dallas? Columbo is the worst pick up of this year but because he played in Dallas we have to have him. I'm so sick of this BS with our offensive line for the last 3 years I wanna puke. If they don't replace Columbo, he will be the downfall of Sparano and Ireland.

Daniel Thomas reminds me alot of J.J. Johnson -both second round picks and flops!

I bet they try to sign Orlovsky

THE DOLPHINS IS ONE OF THESE TEAMS WHO PUTS MONEY FIRST IN EVERY MOVE RE WAVING PLAYERS OR TRADING THEM .....................

Dyingbreed

You really think TS is a good talent evaluator really!!! I know you don't want me to go there, it takes to long to post all the f u c k ups that he and JI tried to evaluate and develop??? So don't tell me TS is a good evaluator of talent because he is not especially on the OL?? So you the dumb a s
Idiot!!! I guess we put our starting RB to return punts and kicks right!! I would have kept LJ just to teach Thomas how to play and prepare to play in the NFL week in and week out!!!

Maybe they go after Ricky Williams. Oops.

Stupid ALoco,

Idioturd, I said if it came down to the #3 qb position I liked Devlin's chances over O'Connell's. Guess I was right seeing how O'Connell was cut before the the final cut list was release to get down to 53.

It could also be sign they liked Marlon Moore so well they eliminated the 3rd qb position to get him on the final 53. Devlin can always be stashed on the PS and called up to service if need be.

Wait until "ALL" the facts are in before flapping your idioturd lips! LOL...

Db beat me to Hartline idea....nice...

YOU CAN TELL THE GOOD PLAYER FROM THE Bad PLAYER BY THEIR NAMES ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

CPOLOMBO
DEVLIN ................. CAN'T BE A GOOD PLAYER HAVING THESE TWO NAMES ...........

GOOD PLAYERS /////////// WAKE .

What could we get for Hartline - a 6th so we could just draft another practice squad player.

COLOMBO

Wait until "ALL" the facts are in before flapping your idioturd lips! LOL...

Nothing you said is factual, you are only guessing at the FO's motivations. You have no clue. Have another greasy potato chip now.

Rob in OC,

I guess cutday is as good as any day to get a couple of Ryan Mallett jabs in. Interesting that he couldn't even make as a backup in New Enland to start the season. That juggernaut Hoyer managed to stay ahead of him on the depth chart. I guess maybe some guys were wrong that he wouldn't automatically step onto the Dolphins and take over the lead job over Henne. But then again, I would expect any of those guys to actual say that maybe Mallett isn't what they thought he might be. He looked REALLY good in the last preseason game against the Giants when he went 6-16 for like 56 yards and 5 sacks...all against inferior talent. He might have escaped today's cuts but he'd better pick it up quicker cause they won't wait for him forever to show something.

Really kind of surprised and disturbed by some of the move today. Allen, Johnson, Politte, Devlin, Willis and Fields chopped and Murtha put on IR. No question this team is worse off today than they were yesterday. RT is still a BIG question mark because it's Colombo, Carey and then??????.....yeah, exactly. Not sure who might have come available today to help but help they need. Maybe some guys are right....maybe a guy like Hartline gets moved for a RT. I don't see it but who knows.

Question marks at TE and in the secondary and of course on OL. Don't get why Mastrud was kept over others. As Armando said, I don't believe this will be our team. Be nice to see Chester Taylor and Merriweather and hopefully someone to play RT. Your move Jeff Ireland....

given the highly noticeable lack of beef in the backfield, the cuts of larry johnson and LOUSAKA POLITE have turned a probable 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1 into 4th and knowhere! this is extremely alarming and can't believe that they hung polite out their for the eagles or pats to pick-up! are you serious? just when i thought the front office was done making bonehead moves, they let go of yet ANOTHER third down conversion machine POLITE! we can now add him to the bonehead move list which includes consistant 3rd down converters(camarillo and welker).....WOW!!!!
can't believe it?!?!?????!?!!!!!?!!... if their is one guy on the roster more reliable at moving the chains i would really like to know who it is.... or the only other explanation is he is injured.

Dumbnuts

Hartline will bring in a player like Colombo!! Hahaha!!! What a bright idea!

How about trading TS for a real offense line coach!!

I'm kind of disappointed that the team cut Polite, LJ, and Will Allen.

I was actually surprised to Spitler, Kearse, Culver, and Baker survive the cuts.

I honestly hope the team concentrates or at least try to sign other available FA veterans, such as Brandon Meriweather, Brain Waters, and Andre Gurode.

Sparano should suggest to Ross the potential extra income for the organization by renting out Carey and Columbo during the week to work as turnstiles at concert gates.

DB IS REPRESENTING EVERY THING EVIL AND BAD IN THE WORLD OF FOOTBALL///////////////////

POSTING EVERY DAY ,JUST TO BE THE FOCUS OF BLOGGERS .NOT KNOWING HE'S THE JOKE AMONG THE SMART BLOGGERS HERE AND THE GOD OF FOOTBALL FOR THE DEFEATERS LIKE KRIS .

A report from the National Post this morning says that the Pats will cut Ocho and/or Haynesworth before the season starts. Show of hands from all those guys that lauded these moves from the Pats and how Ireland never does anything special. Hands up nice and high so we can all see them fellas....

On the same note....how's Plaxico Burress working out fellas? Yeah I thought so....try a little hot sauce on your crow....it's easier to get down.

Craig, none of those players were cut. You were goating and gloating a little too soon bud. Man enough to admit you were wrong for once in your life?

ray,

Tell me this, when was the last time an nfl owner signed a paycheck for you to evaluate any of his talent?

Hmm.......... Seems Sparano has been making big bucks on the pro and college level for quite some time now. So someone must love his "batting average" when it comes to talent evaluations.

When will you ninnies learn. Havent you been watching the waiver list of all teams? Try it sometimes and see how many teams are releasing 1st-2nd-3rd-4th-5th-6th- and 7th rd busts.

Nobody's perfect, even Belichik has early to mid rd busts. Dolfans just wont snatch thier heads out of thier a*sses long enough to see this.

You dumbasses think bust only happen in Miami. Hello............... it happens to every single franchise. LOL.....

Bust don't only happen in Miami but we've had more than our fair share.

Pretty good chance that Pat Devlin comes back to us on the PS. There were a lot of guys convinced that some other team would add him to their active 53 if he became available. Let's see now...

ODRICK IS A BUST AND COSTS 14 MILLION,8 MILLION GUARANTEED /////////////////////

Belichek has one of the most complex offenses out there. No suprise at all a rookie wouldn't beat out a second stringer who has been on the team considering a very short preseason.

People find it ok to give Henne 4 years but than want to say a rookie should be a superstar in 4 weeks of preseason.

Mallett will eventually get some experience in real games and only then will we know what the right call was on him. He is going to be behind Brady for sometime no doubt, unless they trade him.

I am dreading watching Benny Sapp trying to cover Rob Gronkowski week 1. Should get ugly quick.

Crow,

I just reported what PFT had reported. I thought it ironic that everyone lauded the Pats offseason moves and there was talk that those guys wouldn't last. Let's see how they work out. Story isn't written yet.

I disagree with the designation of the Miami team as mediocre. Our defensive starters are all at least good and several are very good to excellent as is the coaching. Our WR corps has a star in Marshall, very good players in Bess and Hartline and a young player with the potential to become great in Gates. Bush is healthy and at this point seems excellent. Thomas has not shown much but he is a rookie - we'll see. I would agree with Mediocre at TE and the overall OL (because of the less than mediocre RT and questionable RG). Our QB from last years performance fits mediocre or worse but not from the preseason - another one we'll see. Anyway not close to mediocre. From another perspective this is our most talented defense since the 1970s and our most promising offense in a decade. I see them taking 10 games and maybe 11 - IF and this is a big IF - they fix the OL functionality and Thomas turns out to be good. When we beat the Patriots in the opening game the "mediocre" tag will start looking pretty dumb.

When will you ninnies learn.

Dolfans just wont snatch thier heads out of thier a*sses long enough to see this.

You dumbasses think bust only happen in Miami. LOL.....

DyingBreed, that is a lot of cursing at fellow bloggers. Can you maybe improve your vocabulary and be more respectful?

Aloco
It looks like another great pick and you just mention him Odrick....I havnt seen anything really special. Yet!! Maybe this year, that if he can stay healthy!!

Sparano vs. Bellicheck. Who do you think comes out on top?

STUDENT1776............... HOW CAN OUR DEFENSE BE (( EXCELLENT )) WHILE HAVING 1-7 RECORD AT HOME......................................

PS... DO FL PEOPLE KNOW HOW TO USE THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ? EXCELLENT ,MY FOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

I still there's more to come on the OL. Pats have been talking to Brian Waters and Gurode. The Dolphins may evaluate the line further after week 1 and then sign a vet after week 1, when his contract doesn't have to be guaranteed. Regardless of what Sparano is saying I'm not 100 per cent certain he's completely sold on the line. There's still a chance that a guy like Carey could end up back at RT at some point.

Toot, toot. That's DyingBreed tooting his own horn just a few days ago, claiming NFL coaches were changing the way they approach punting the ball to the Dolphins.

After undrafted free agent Livas returned a punt for a TD weeks ago, the resident expert here claimed this week coaches facing Miami were now telling their punters to kick the ball high, while giving up about ten yards of field position in doing so, because Livas was so feared.

Guess Livas didn't really change the way the NFL defends punt returners after all, LOL...LOL.

I just reported what PFT had reported. I thought it ironic that everyone lauded the Pats offseason moves and there was talk that those guys wouldn't last. Let's see how they work out. Story isn't written yet.

Nice try bud, but no you didn't just report what PFT said. You went on to add the following:

"Yeah I thought so....try a little hot sauce on your crow....it's easier to get down"

You were provoking like a 7 year old child saying 'I'm right your wrong'.

Nice try loser. You are just not man enough to own up to being wrong and went off the handle provoking others when it wasn't called for. Final cuts were today, the story is written.

One day all players will get cut, nobody lasts for ever.

RAY... WATCH THE HONORABLE D.THOMAS ,THE BUST OF THE YEAR, HE CAN'T EVEN HANDLE THE HEAT IN MIAMI .................................

WLECOME TO COLOMBO TOWN ..............

What do you think the Vegas odds would be that Reggie Bush can make it through an entire 16 game NFL seasion as a featured back without getting injured?

I've heard a lot of guys today mention Tyrell Sutton would be a good pickup. I'm not that familiar with this guy....what is it you guys see in this guy or think he can become?

Belichik has had more than his fair share of bust too:

A poster from a Patriot blog posts:

With Meriweather cut, there are no draft picks from the patriots 2007 draft class. So much for the genius of Belichick’s draft strategy of trading down and getting more picks. It looks like that strategy backfired.

LOL, rotflmaos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is now evident that tis Team is far from complete although I believe somewhat better than last year's. Make it 8-8, perhaps 9-7.

Yes ALoco - we now have two D. Thomas busts - Donald and Daniel.

Another Patriots blog post:

Ochocinco to the rescue? I bet you money these tools sign T.O. The moment he is healthy. I think that Jerry Jones, Dan Snyder and Al Davis are running this place.

DB SHOULD BE IN COMEDY CENTRAL......LOL

Crow,

You must have read a different English than I did in school. Where did I say that these guys would be cut or that the article said they would be cut? I was simply responding to the parrots who feel that everything the Pats and Jets do is the best and here was PFT saying something different.

Why don't YOU be a real man and post under your real name instead of being a 7 year old and posting under an anoynomous name....LOSER!

Seeya later village idiots! LOL..............

Maybe Columbo can become an annoying super sleuth detective while playing offensive lineman.

Yeah you right Dyingbreed
TS has been getting over paid for years now maybe it's time for TS to give some of that BIG BUCKS BECAUSE HE ROBB THEM BLIND!!! BUT I GUARANTEE
YOU I WOULDN'T HAVE PICK PAT WHITE R EVEN PLAYED HIM!!! AND PICKING ODRICK INSTEAD OF A OL HELP OR WR LIKE Dez Bryant!!

I was feeling pretty good about this team heading into the season but I don't like what the team did today. There's too many holes in the secondary with guys like Sapp, Carrol and even Clemons. This secondsary is going to have bereakdowns this year and still give up the big plays. I can see it coming. Would Allen have helped? I think he would have. I don't like the look of the OL and I don't like what we are doing at RB. Now if we can correct this by picking up a couple of vets then great but I'm not optimistic.

The trick with those quick, fast TE's is to hit them at the line, hard. Otherwise, they are very difficult to cover for the average DB.

Yes ray, Jared Odrick looks much better coming in as a second string defensive lineman than Dez Bryant would look starting the game across from Brandon Marshall. Go figure.

If I'm Bellichik I use Gronkowski and Hernandez all day next week underneath against our DBs. I think he keeps going there until we show we can stop them and we haven't so far.

CraigM

Excellent post the PHINS havnt stop the TE since JJ days and Wanny Days.. Good point!!

NE tight ends and Brady are going to eat our secondary for dinner. Bellicheck will certinly have watched the film on us.

Belichek had his game plan and offense set for this first game 3 months ago. We are still trying to figure it all out. I expect our d to play well but there are too many holes in our offense to attack. Our D will be spent by the 4th quarter.

Why the negativity? We will lose some but will win others.

My fearful prediction for opening night - New England 34 - Miami 17.

You must have read a different English than I did in school. Where did I say that these guys would be cut or that the article said they would be cut?

Posted by: Craig M | September 03, 2011 at 10:47 PM

Craig, you can't be serious! Here is the exact same text once again. Try reading the very first sentence. You will do anything to weasel out of admitting you were wrong.
