Miami Dolphins are still working the roster

The Miami Dolphins are continuing to churn the roster today and it is not necessarily the very bottom of the roster that they're addressing.

The club today announced the signing of tight end Dante Rosario and offensive lineman Ryan Cook. The club waived inside linebacker A.J. Edds and terminated the contract of veteran lineman Joe Berger to make room for the additions.

"None of these are easy," coach Tony Sparano said. "These come down to numbers and needs at the time. We had 10 linebackers on the roster and we weren't going to carry 10 linebackers."

Edds goes because he was last on the list of those 10 LBs. And the reason he was behind everyone else, despite having what outsiders considered to be a good preseason, was the lingering affects of his 2010 injury. No, it wasn't the physical toll of that injury that hampered Edds, but rather the missed time which he ultimately could not overcome.

Is there a chance Edds gets re-signed to the practice squad? Sparano was non-commital. Basically, Austin Spitler, drafted in the seventh round last season, is ahead of Edds, a fourth-round pick, because one missed all of last season and the other played

"We'll see. I like some of the things A.J.'s done. Austin's done a really good job. Obviously, A.J. missed a chunk of time and we didn't have a chance to evaluate him a year ago where Austin had that time so he's a little bit further ahead that way."

The club is expected to add Frank Kearse to the practice squad if he clears waivers today.

The Rosario addition is a good job of solving a big problem with one move. No, Rosario is not the next coming of Tony Gonzalez. But he brings an athleticism and speed the tight end group lacked before today. It would probably be a good bet to think Rosario becomes the team's No. 2 tight end behind Anthony Fasano once he gets up to speed with the offense.

Rosario, 6-4 and 250 pounds, was recently cut by the Denver Broncos after spending the first four years of his career with the Carolina Panthers,

"I didn't know what to expect after being released from Denver I justed the opportunity to play," Rosario said. "I'm grateful that Miami's giving me the opportunity. I haven't been guaranteed anything. It's opportunity to come in here, work hard, show what I can do."

Rosario has 22 career starts to his credit. That should make you feel better than the lack of experience Miami had in Jeron Mastrud and Will Yeatman.

Cook, 6-6 and 328 pounds, is expected to provide the position flexibility the Dolphins have valued in recent years. He has played guard, center as well as tackle for the Minnesota Vikings the past five seasons. Cook also has experience in that he has 40 starts to his credit. He is a former second round pick of the Vikings.

The Dolphins clearly believed Cook an upgrade over Berger, who started 14 games last season. It should be said that Berger was in the final year of his contract with Miami.

Berger was scheduled to make $1.5 million for the team this year. Cutting him costs Miami $108,333 on the cap but the savings is that base salary of $1.5 million.

Finally, Marvin Mitchell was at practice today, Sprano said. Obviously, he was elsewhere during the period of practice open to the media.

We won't have 4 TE's for very long. I think Maustraud is gone soon.

Lets see:

Fasano: All around steady. Average, makes a big play every 4 to 5 weeks.

Rosario: Quicker athletic pass catcher with EXPERIENCE. All things all of our back up TE's have lacked in recent years.

Yeatman: Young MONSTER road grader(270 pounds).

I'd say we've SERIOUSLY upgraded the TE position in the past two days. Not that it took much, but I'm feeling better about it already!

Not it at all and being the UM lifer that I am would have had zero problem with Graham as well but wasn`t sure about him compared to Hernandez because of the factor that one was a 3 year starter the other switched from B-ball his Sr. year. I know alot of guys make the transiton now but felt safer going with Hernandez, also in honesty was thinking Hernandez when Rd.3 came around and we took J.Jerry who I also happened to like because I had seen some of his tape and thought he had quick feet the year he went from RG to RT in the SEC, so we can all really tank it on some guys but when Hernandez falls in our lap Rd.4 I was sure we would take him and was shoked by the Edds pick in all honesty. I`m simpy venting over something I was harping on for some time now, seen you do it plenty as well Bro, so please no sermons.

wow, i wonder how much of this we are going to see. it would appear that they are trying to get this team up to snuff quickly on the offensive side of the ball. yeatman, despite being an undrafted rookie could prove to be a valuable blocking tight end. cook adds a lot of flexibility to the offensive line and rosario gives them athleticism at the tight end that they lacked in the past. when you look at rosario's numbers you have to kind of keep them in perspective because he came from carolina. maybe daboll can turn him loose. anyway, nice to see that no one is sitting on their hands at miami headquarters.

After adding Rosario I agree 100% saw him at WR in Louisville and then some at T.E. in Carolina and he can play, throw blocking out the window here but can deff. catch and run!!

Happen to agree about Rosario been watching him since the U went up to Louisville his Sr. Season and he handed Miami`s secondary there butts with Brett Braum at Q.B. also Micheal Bush was there RB, good team that up and smacked a good UM team up and down the field led by WR Rosario who at about 235 bulks up and becomes a pass catching TE in Carolina.

yeah, rosario is a very athletic te. if dabol has something in mind for this guy he can become a key piece of the puzzle. think of this. if clay pans out and rosario is turned loose this offense will have numerous weapons that will make it one of the most difficult to defend against. this is getting more interesting by the minute.

Rosario's numbers aren't stellar, but I think there comparable to Fasano's.

I think his skillset is very complimentary to Fasano's. I don't know enough about the guy to go all overboard, but definitely more promising than Shuler, Epps and Mastraud.

Looked around for some data on Ryan Cook. 6'7" athletic powerful versatile player with decent feet but not speed for longer pulls who was a good center although mechanically people used his height and hence leverage against him. Versatility exceeds excellence at any specific position, a valuable backup guy but the Vikings were going for youth and for players who were more dominant at their position. All in all does not sound like the solution for the weakness with Columbo (my current main worry about the OL) but given Murtha being out and the fact that losses of OL is common enough, sounds decent as an experienced backup.

I'd say everyone was a needed upgrade. Ireland finds a way to make up for his mistakes, at least most of them. He is teaching us fans we jump to conclusions too soon, as you say, in two days we've upgraded TE and not to mention backup G/C while shedding players that really couldn't help us.

If you youtube him at Louisville you`ll see a big WR who maybe didn`t have that great speed who becomes an NFL project at T.E. I believe it was mid 4.5 but when you analize Fasano runs a little under 5 flat the difference is comparable and in reality he looks quicker maybe one of those quick but not fast guys you`ve talk to me about. Have known about him for sometime because he`s a Miami kid who the Canes snubbed and then he rubbed scrub Coach Cocker`s face in it. Although I think he`s not sticking because of his blocking not that we care we`ve already gone thru a few of those in Miami.

i don't know about you guys but this stuff seems to be flying under the radar everywhere i look; like no one is paying any attention to it. that bodes well for the fins as far as i'm concerned. it provides an element of surprise.
this team is getting no respect and, maybe you can say they deserve it for they way they played the last 2 years but i'm loving it. the less respect they get, the less seriously they are taken the bigger the advantage.

Cook is definitely a veteran journeymen O-lineman.

I wouldn't be so quick to label him as a back up.

Just like our back up O-lineman wouldn't make most teams rosters, the Vikes back ups would start on a lot of teams. The O-line has been a strength of the Vikings for quite awhile now.

I would plug Cook in at right guard or right tackle RIGHT NOW and let the chips fall where they may.

One more O-line pick up like this and I'm bumping up my win/loss prediction. We could still make room by jettisoning Spitler or Trusnik with no discernable drop off.

It looks like no starting caliber offensive lineman has come available yet. Ireland just may be doing his best to shop one of our defensive lineman for either a RT or RG, maybe an even swap.

I don't like the idea of moving Pouncey. Let the guy play and develop as a center. Let's not fill one hole by creating another. I know Cognito can play center, but with a season of experience Pouncey will surpass him. They drafted him as center, he wants to play center, lets leave that spot settled and done.

Wikipedia is so quick they already updated the Rosario we just signed and it`s the kid from Oregon. The other Rosario is in that new WFL. Sorry about that I got pretty confused on that one. Been reading on the one we did just sign and he`s listed as an H-back/T.E. who former Panthers H.C. Fox cuts do to an injury that kept him from competing in camp. BIO says 6"3` 254 pds, 4.75/40

Given the depth at both WR and DL I`d put Starks and Hartline on the market. There the only two we can replace from within that could net us a player of use.

Forget about all this minor tinkering that Sparano & Ireland are doing....they have not fixed the biggest problem. And it's not Henne....but RB! With the release of Johnson and not Hillard, it shows that Dolphins management has given up on the 2011 before it even begins. Even if the Fins RB's go injury free throughout the season...who will be pounding the ball come the cold, winter days of Dec & Jan? Not Bush or Hillard...and the Fins are praying that Thomas can even handle a full NFL schedule without hitting that rookie wall. Johnson is a proven commodity that put up huge numbers and made pro bowls with the Chiefs. Unless you have a magician of a QB that plays even better in the snow and cold (see Tom Brady) you must be able to pound the rock to control the clock and with your defense. Injuries are never a good thing and no one wants someone on their favorite team to lose a key player. But with the lack of Fins management to field a winning team as the season winds down...perhaps Hillard can tweak a hamstring and go on IR during the first part of the season. Bring back a pounder....give Johnson a chance!

Rosario had a big game vs. the Fins last preseason..He looked like a young TONY G.As for letting Edds go instead of Spitler that was weird..Edds is a better player better tackler...Spitler is super stiff can't get off blocks..I say Edds geting cut is something deeper going on there ..Cause this was realy his Rookie year.And he looked good in the games i saw ..His lone bad play was not turning his head around vs. the Bucs and letting that TE Overbay score the winning TD.I hope GATES is active this week..i think he probaly is goona be inactive a couple of games this year..
