Larry Johnson is signed and on the practice field today. And he is taking some repetitions as the club's No. 2 running back -- at least in the portion of practice open to the media.
Why?
Well, because rookie Daniel Thomas is injured. And he is not practicing. The Herald's Jeff Darlington is reporting Thomas yesterday tweaked a hamstring injury he had earlier this preseason and so the club felt the need to buy insurance for Monday night's regular-season opener against the Patriots.
I have to tell you, Thomas has not had a great month. He's been tentative on some runs in training camp. He was told to stop "tippy toeing" by coaches at one point. And he got hurt. And now he's hurt again.
I've heard of better starts to an NFL career.
Now, let's think outside the box for a moment. Is this terrible news?
Given Thomas's obvious need to get better acclimated to the NFL game and the large stage on which the Miami season begins -- national TV -- would you rather hand the ball to the rookie or to Johnson?
I believe the moment won't be bigger than Larry Johnson. Monday night football?
Been there. Done that.
That does not mean it is certain Thomas will be out of Monday night's game. The Johnson signing is supposed to be for insurance. If it turns out that Johnson is thrust into a contributing role behind Reggie Bush, so be it.
In my opinion, at least.

Daniel Thomas = Yatil Green

And guess what? Another draft bust of a pick by the infamous J. Ireland. Wow, what a surprise. Can anyone please go and kick this idiot as hard as you can in the groin for me.....PLEASE!!! Oh and by the way, they sure are talking pretty tough around here in Fins world. Lets see if they can really back that talk on monday night.
Posted by: tiredfinfan | September 08, 2011 at 02:39 PM
Now we see why Tony says Reggie is going to be the #1 back, the other two backs both have hamstring injuries.
Meanwhile, Ricky and Ronnie set to play game one of the season for likely contenders.

worry more about our RBs' hammies than climate change! Perry, a politician from Texas and a modern day Galileo (but not quite as heretical) has made it very clear that the scientists are wrong. So relax and enjoy the season!

I would like Mando to answer this question instead of hiding behind his drive by postings.
WHAT ARE THIS TEAMS STRENGTHS?
Write an article outlining how our strengths outweigh our weaknesses. Then compare and contrast that to OUR DIVISION.
That article would be something I would like to read.

Making fun of other fans for whining & crying? They're tired of being a sucker. You should be too.
What are you doing? Sitting there, putting on your smiley faces. Letting Sparano & Ireland stick it in your sore a** week after week while you stuff your face with nachos.
No wonder why our stadium is overrun every Sunday. With fans like you, why have home games? If you don't demand a winner, you don't deserve one.

You guys are hilarious, the slightest shred of bad news sends everyone into a frenzy. It's not that bad, the guy has gotten off to a slow start and we bring in a vet for insurance. Doesn't mean he's not or won't be a good player for us. I personally am glad we got younger and faster in the backfield.

Here is what irriates me the most. We got Henne, Moore and whatever else is on the depth chart.
What is so wrong with bringing in Garrard as insurance?
This organization is so hell bent on believing the garbage on this team is better than the cast off's from other teams.
TO is out there. Kerry Collins was out there. Moss is out there. A whole host of players are out there but this organization BELIEVES the garbage they currently have is better than the cast off of other teams.

Sure id rather handoff to a RB with some giddy-up.
Sparano/Ireland could have signed Ricky Williams or Ronnie, or Marion Barber or Chester Taylor, but no lets get the woman beater, he's more dependable. And people wonder why there will be more Pats fans then Dolphin fans come Monday night. There have got to be better free agent RB's out there. And just think, Ireland/Sparano traded back into the 2nd rd to get Daniel Thomas. Sparano/Ireland can not evaluate talent.

Like you said? That's not what you-LOL. What you said was: WRONG ;)
However, I like your NEW updated "fallback" position. Half a season? Your making progress!
BTW, whats wrong with having a defense good enough to carry your team? It worked a few times for my hometown Bear Be-atch, Ah Ha ha!
"ONLY YOU" could make having a top 5 defense a negative thing-ROTFLMAO, looser!!!!

Good. I am glad they did something. I don't know diddly squat about Daniel Thomas and wish him well. Anyone think he might have been injured from the start. Anyone here ever have a torn muscle in the chest or stomach. Tough to do any running.
I watched Detroit run by Haynesworth. Right past him. He fell over and touched some feet but the guy still went over 5 yards.
4-3 defenses are easier to beat with screens, draw plays and the front 4 wear down by the 4th quarter.

Pretty bad that the wheels are falling off the running game before we've even played a meaningful snap. I knew it would happen, I just didn't figure it would be this soon. Guys don't like it to be said but another veteran back should have been signed at some point. LJ is fine but there were other guys that would have been better. The good teams, like the Saints would have drafted a back but not expected the rookie to carry the load. The Dolphins can paint it whatever way they want with Bush but he's not a lead back (he will breakdown too easily) and he's more of a change of pace, swing pass back. If they had really been expecting Bush to carry the ball 20-25 times (which they don't) then they would have killed him at some point. A back like McGahee with Bush, and Thomas working in, would have been the way to go. Dummies!!....
Posted by: Craig M | September 08, 2011 at 03:07 PM
Had we internet in the early 70's, both Shula and Joe Robbie would have been run out of town for letting Czonka, Kiick and Warfield walk.
Thus we never would have had Marino to compare future Dolphin qb's to. Remember, you would have run Shula out of town and he's the one that drafted Marino.
LOL...................................................

Reggie Bush is a legit feature back in DaBoll's offensive system. Feature is only relegated to how you plan to use him.
No one would have ever thought Roger Craig could be a feature back either. Not until they saw the effective way Bill Walsh came up with to use him.
Bush can be effectively used in a Roger Craig like manner, dumbass ninnies!

Mark in Toronto, better watch out, look what I just read:
"Canadian officials say the number of Americans applying for temporary work visas doubled between 2008 and 2010."
Sorry dude. Time to lock your doors.
Posted by: DC Dolfan | September 08, 2011 at 03:17 PM
Los lobos, sorry for the insult just really disagreed with some things. One being "the garbage we have now is better than the garbage we had?" Well what we had was a offense that was too slow and lethargic. We had to be perfect on nearly every drive to pick up every first down on the way to the endzone because we were athletically unable to make explosive plays when the opportunity was there. This year we added more speed to be able to do those things. It may or may not work but they got it done. Also you say what are this teams strengths... well we have a deep and talented young front 7, good corners who shouldn't be overmatched in any game, a top ten wideout with nice complementary pieces, and a runningback who has very good speed and is dangerous in the open field.
Posted by: kingsmith | September 08, 2011 at 03:18 PM
thus proving my point ive been saying all along, this owner and gm have NO clue about talent and how to draft. i mean come 1st round traded up for a average Rb from where... kansas state come on man. please once agian can "SOME RICH PERSON THAT KNOWS FOOTBALL PLEASE BUY OUR TEAM AND MAKE US CONTENDERS AGAIN....PLEASE!!!!!!"

In today's nfl you need a very efficient passing attack and a rb who's good enough to keep defenses honest.
With the abundance of very good recievers and Reggie Bush on the roster I see a very huge check mark in both areas.
Will you be dumbass ninnies all of your life? I see a huge check mark in the "YES" box for you dumbass ninnies too!
LOL......................................................
Posted by: DyingBreed | September 08, 2011 at 03:20 PM
TRICKY, wasn't Josh Freeman from Kansas State? Wasn't Ladanian Tomlinson from TCU? What are trying to say about small schools? Steve McNair came from like Acorn St. Doesn't mean anything where you went to school. If you made it to the NFL, you have to have LOTS of talent.
Posted by: DC Dolfan | September 08, 2011 at 03:21 PM
I still say the back to have grabbed this year were Ryan Williams and Leshoure. Yes, they are both out for the year but those were freak accidents and there's nothing to suggest that the same thing would have happened in Miami. There was never anything outstanding abot Thomas (maybe his hands) but the guy we saw in the preseason is pretty much the guy we epxected. Can he become better? Hope so. I've heard the Sammie Smith comparisons and that's probably who he reminds me of the most when I look at him. I hope he proves me wrong.

Strengths
Receivers,
corners and linebackers , defensive line , special team specialists. Left sides of the ol.
offensive and defensive schemes
Weakness
running backs and QB based on past experience )
right guard and tackle
Starting TE
Division
beside the jets who corners can keep step or take out receivers out the game
the only pass rushers in the division are playing for the dolphins. not out of schemes like what the jets do. you really thing the pats and jets and buffalo will run on us this year?
just to name a few
all division opponents will be tough because of the familiarity but if we play to our strengths we could beat them and game plan for them
Go phins
