Phillip Livas has been cut by the Miami Dolphins, a source is telling me.
That means the player who handled the Dolphins punt return and much of the kickoff return duties this preseason is gone. He might be a practice squad possibility.
So what do the Dolphins do with the kickoff and punt return jobs?
Well, Clyde Gates seems to be the most likely candidate for the kick return job. The punt return job might have Gates in the mix as well.
But I would not discount the new punt returner to be the old punt returner -- Davone Bess. He's reliable. He has some quickness. And although he lacks the speed to give Miami a 75 or 80-yard return, his hands are very reliable.
The club also might employ Reggie Bush in the punt return mix -- especially in big games or big moments of games.
I am breaking my news on twitter. Simply, it is faster to get it out there. I give you the insight here. So if you must know stuff the second it breaks, please follow me on twitter.

I seem to remember Bess having trouble holding on to punts for a spell last season. Rather see what Gates can do.

Kicking from 35 = 50%+ touchbacks. KRs need marginalized. Livas not that muh better than Bess@ PR so...but should be considered for PS assuming both Wallace and Moore make 53.
If they keep Clay, Polite, Hilliard and more than 2 TEs I'll know little has changed.
Posted by: Chris | September 03, 2011 at 06:14 PM
Would have liked to see Livas stick as a returner. But with the new k/o rules, clearly out of the wr picture, and not having st's prowess other than as a pr. We just dont have the luxury in wake of tough decisions at other roster spots to simply keep him as a punt returner alone.
To be kept as a pr alone the guy needed to be totally lights out at the position. By lights out, I mean 3 or more punt returns for TD's this preseason. I would have liked to keep Livas but I do understand.
Also I think it's a tough decision to sign him to our PS because the wr position is so solid, it maybe a waste of PS roster to develop another wr. Unless we need a high speed practice dummy for the defense to prepare for opponents with a high speed starting wr.

I'm not a fan of Bess going back there and doing that job. Let's see what Gates can do but we've seen some good things from Nolan Carrol back there too.
Strange moves today. I think they must have something else up their sleeves.

The Pats are over-rated when it comes to evaluating and drafting players. How did Brandon Tate, Maroney, WR Jackson, Kevin O'Connell, Ron Brace, Sebastian Vollmer, David Thomas work out? Bellichik doesn't have ALL the answers when evaluating and drafting talent. Merriweather is a Pro Bowler and still young. Add him to the team....it's more a personal thing with Bellichik and Merriweather.
Craig M | September 03, 2011 at 06:07 PM
Craig,
All high picks and bombs for sure but with regards to Merriweather I watch plenty of the Pats as I imagine most of us do given there in the AFC East and have seen him be a sore spot in pass D. Given he goes about 210 and I`d venture to say lighter during the Season (I saw him plenty in person when he was at the U) then he`s a bit smallish for the S.S. spot more of a F.S.
I think given his game that Clemmons measures up well plus we know the young Jimmy Wilson has the range for the position as well. I would let Rashad Jones who does play over 220 start to try and pick it up at S.S. I like the potential of those 3 in our backfield alot.

Baker sticks apparently.
That's a lot of defensive lineman.

Murtha on IR

Surprised at cutting both Polite and Johnson. Figured they would keep one for short yardage situations. Oh well

Huh? Well at least he won't be getting Henne put there now.
Kearse over Fields at NT, interesting.
I assume ILB Mitchell(?) makes the team then. Ehat's a good thing, the guy was balling in pre season.

Tela,
No, I don't want you to hack into my account, but
thanks for letting us know who is doing it. Do you do bank jobs too?
JaxDolphin | September 03, 2011 at 06:23 PM
LMFAO!!
By the way if he does Bank jobs I could use a ghost ATM Card!!
Posted by: fin4life | September 03, 2011 at 06:30 PM
I wonder who they are looking at for the QB position. Two QBs out. Interesting.
Posted by: Bobonator | September 03, 2011 at 06:30 PM
With Polite and Johnson gone, Wallace and Moore stick.
I can live with that.

looks like john jerry survived.

odinseye | September 03, 2011 at 06:29 PM
odin,
The Kearse over Fields move is a head scratcher for me as well because I could be dead wrong but believe Kearse headed to the P.S. and saw somethings in Fields I liked.
I didn`t know Murtha was hurt meaning the search for a back up swing Tackle is on. I was desperate enough that I wondered if he coudn`t play RT.
The ILB Mitchell will get his shot on S.T.`s
Posted by: fin4life | September 03, 2011 at 06:34 PM
Now that Polite was terminated we know for sure Daboll picked his personal on Offense. Polite was along with R.Brown our best pass blocking back
Posted by: fin4life | September 03, 2011 at 06:37 PM
Hopefully they put Baker in Murtha's spot and will now trade a D-lineman for an O-lineman.
We need ONE real bad and most likely TWO!
Posted by: odinseye | September 03, 2011 at 06:39 PM
Polite cut?!! I guess there wasn't much interest by other NFL teams to use him as trade bait. wow!
I'm sad with the Larry Johnson and Will Allen cut... We need veterans/ leaders at those positions!!!
Posted by: dfins006 | September 03, 2011 at 06:40 PM
So we're generally making our way back to the status quo ... that of lumbering athletes and mediocrity?
Posted by: dishpan | September 03, 2011 at 06:40 PM
just proves everything tony says is bs. a week ago he praised polite.
Posted by: mierdahead | September 03, 2011 at 06:41 PM
Don't agree with Polite move. He was gold on short yardage pickup. Liked to have seen LJ make the team. Needed a big vet. Not thilled with Thomas so far. He will need time to develope.

this is going to come up some time this season. When the Phins may need a yard to get and important first down to win the game, who is going to get the call. Thomas? . They better find a RB soon.
Posted by: Mr.Smith | September 03, 2011 at 07:09 PM
I have had it with this GM and coaching staff. They have no idea what the he'll they are doing. There is no direction at all. Why did they cut Larry Johnson? They need a guy to pound it up inside. Time to watch coll. Football.
Posted by: Mike miiligan | September 03, 2011 at 07:22 PM
So, only two TE's and 1 FB left, and Clay isn't either, really. Just going by what I've (not) seen from him so far.
Only two QB's? Hmmm.
I think we're going to do some cherry-picking (some might say dumpster-diving) of the waiver wire, for sure.
Posted by: JaxDolphin | September 03, 2011 at 07:41 PM
I say give Merriweather a shot, we can always use fast, big hitters.
Posted by: JaxDolphin | September 03, 2011 at 07:43 PM
Besides, we owe NE for the whole Welker thing, anyway.
Posted by: JaxDolphin | September 03, 2011 at 07:45 PM
Draft choices that made the cut....
Clyde Gates
Charles Clay
Daniel Thomas
Jimmy Wilson
Mike Pouncey
Frank Kearse
Looks like the FO is standing by their picks. Probably too soon to disagree.

fin4,
He left before I could find out. Guess the getaway
car was double parked.
Posted by: JaxDolphin | September 03, 2011 at 07:57 PM
Pick up Merriweather for the Pats game stupid, maybe he will tell you some of Belichecks secrets and you can learn something. (Sprano) please, please, I'm starting to forget 1972!
Posted by: Mike M | September 03, 2011 at 09:03 PM
I hope they can come up with a trade that gets us a first rate RT.
Posted by: student1776 | September 03, 2011 at 10:45 PM
Hmmm...let's see you get rid of Ronnie Brown and Rickey Willaims who obviously are dependable RB's. Daniel Thomas needs to mature. Reggie Bush is not a short yardage back. So..you get rid of one of your most dependable short yardage backs in the history of the Miami Dolphins- who you actually praise a few days earlier. And in turn you think Clay- a guy who I have not seen take any short yardage plays in the preseason, and not only that cut a veteran tank RB in Larry Johnson....I just don't get this organization. There seems to be no focus, moves are weird. Then after all the hoopla of bringing in a O'connel and Devlin- bye bye, out the door. Devlin never had a chance to do anything...scarey how messed up this organization is already.
Posted by: David | September 03, 2011 at 11:49 PM
Whatever happened to cobbs? I'm confused. And so is this coaching staff!! Gonna be a long season!
Posted by: Beavis | September 04, 2011 at 10:18 AM
L.Johnson and L.Polite both out, whattha; they must be looking into bringing back L.Czonka and J.Kiick, while your add it bring back Danny boy and B.Grease as the back up,,geeez.

Livas will be picked up by some team and come back to haunt the Fins.
