The curious case of Reggie Bush

Some things puzzle me about the Dolphins. The defense's regression puzzles. The continued inability to win at home puzzles. And the team's use of Reggie Bush puzzles.

On several levels now.

It puzzles that the Dolphins look at Bush -- a 6-foot and 205-pounder -- and somehow believe him to be an inside running threat. Bush proved long ago in New Orleans he wasn't that. He's proven this year he isn't a dude that will run through 300-pound defensive linemen or create his own hole where there is no hole.

Yet the Dolphins have through three games repeatedly asked him to run between the tackles. They did it less last week as there were attempts to use Bush on pitches. But if this were my team, he would never be asked to stick his facemask in the A-gap.

The guy needs to be out in space. It is obvious to anyone with eyes. Yet, it hasn't happened enough.

Interestingly, the Dolphins agree Bush is better outside, in space, where he can use his speed and agility to escape defenders.

“Well, we got to get him in some space," coach Tony Sparano said. "I think that’s important.  I think that trying to get Reggie touches early is important.  We didn’t do … we did do a good job of getting him the ball early in the ball game the other day. Unfortunately, his first carry was the second play of the game and it was a penalty. He did catch a ball out of the backfield.  But we got to get him involved a little bit earlier, try to get him going a little earlier that way. It’s just you’re trying to get him going, trying to get Brandon (Marshall) going, you’re trying to get some things going that way. You don’t want to get caught in that mode too many times where you’re trying to feed players particularly.  That’s a bad thing for the quarterback...I get to yell at the quarterback go back there and play. If the read takes him then the read takes him there or any of those types of things. We can do a better job of getting Reggie in space. I think that’s important.”

Yes, it is important. I think it is also important to use Bush in situations where his presence is a matchup problem for the defense. In that regard, it's puzzles me why the Dolphins don't use Bush is a base formation and then motion him out wide to the slot or elsewhere.

This forces the defense to cover Bush with a linebacker or strong safety out in space. That is a mismatch problem for the defense. It makes sense to use. And the Dolphins practiced this tons in the preseason. It was evident to anyone who attended the open practices.

They apparently continue to practice it since workouts have closed to all outside eyes. But the puzzling thing is they don't use it in games.

And that puzzles Bush as well.

“We do it a lot at practice," Bush said. "It just hasn’t been called in the game. It’s going to come."

Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is in charge of calling the plays. He is scheduled to speak to the media today and my guess is he'll be asked why he's not calling those plays.

"I know he’s going to make those calls, I will be spread out wide there. I’ve done a little bit, but as much as obviously in my past so like I said, we do it all the time in practice, it just hasn’t shown in the game yet.”

Like I said: Puzzling.

Dusty Bottoms....

if nothing else...your consistent in your assesment of Henne.....

thank you kris, wont change either. guy has been awful from the start, i look forward to andrew luck

oscar canosa,

You are right. Other teams may go 1-15, but if we get close enough to be in play for the QB, they will go all-in to trade up to land the guy, no matter the stakes.

Noone is 100% sure about luck. Noone was 100% about Manning or Bradford or Aikman or Vick or Stafford. Who knows, he could be the next Alex Smith. But the Dolphins will take a chance on #1 overall pick talent at QB. No doubt about that.

Joe Schmoe,

Of course the 1 win will be against the Yets.

And it will be in Miami!

IN NEW ENGLAND THEY SMELL SABOTAGE MILE AWAY. NO ONE WHO EVER HE'S CAN SAY OR DO ANY THING AGAINST THE TEAM .
IN FL WE ;
TS,THE PIZZA MAN AND HIS LOVELY SON
IRELAND THE AUTO SHOP MANAGER
R.BUSH ,WE SIGNED HIM AFTER HE WAS DUMPED BY THE KARDASHIAN GIRL.
MIKE NOLAN AND DANSBY = 50 MILLION DOLLARS CONTRACTS.

DKM,

Won't kill myself over the Dolphins.

But I stand by the fact that this team was sabotaged from the beginning. Columbo? Really?
How does the rest of the NFl world and PFF see this guy as washed up but the coaching staff does not?

How does everyone else see Reggie Bush as a perimeter runner with talent to operate in space, but our coaches do not?

KRIS,
YOUR POSTS HAVE BEEN IMPROVING A LOT SINCE
LAST MONTH.GOOD JOB.

5 sacks, 8 knockdowns and 11-15 hurries. IN ONE GAME!

I don't care if you're coaching pop warner football. If your line is giving up these kind of numbers, you have to take a closer look.

Is it true SpOrano was defending Colombo and the O-line again this week?

Ryan Cook and Garner should/would at least get a look in anybody elses eyes but SpOrano's. It's sad, but SpOrano's stubborness and apparently his arrogance is ruining his career and our season.

Under these circumstances I can't feel sorry for the guy. He's going to get exactly what he DESRVES! To bad it has to be at ours and the players expense.

The really sad part is, it doesn't even have to be ths way. The defense is struggling at 30th overall. Despite this fact, we've been in every game and SHOULD have won at least two of them.

Also, despite the problems with the O-line, Henne and Thomas have played well enough for us to be 7th in rushing and 13 passing. 12th overall! Can you imagine if Thomas actually had good holes to hit or Henne had time to go through his post snap reads? Don't kid yourselves, These two issues solved would more than TRUMP all the timely drops, fumbles and stupid penalties put together.

SpOrano is apparently just too Gosh DAMN stupid to do ANYTHING right and save his own skin.

A lot of you guys argue with the things I post. Let me challenge you to an argument. Seeing Carey and Colombo play for years, I say Carey(as bad as he is)is head and shoulders a better right tackle than Colombo. Argue with me on that. Tell me I'm wrong.

How about Tony makes the simple move, that seems to be obvious to everyone on the planet except for him, the simple move of benching Colombo and moving Carey back out to right tackle. The other move, which should be obvious to everyone(but not SpOrano), is letting Ryan Cook and Nate Garner battle it out for the right guard spot. I won't even mention bringing somebody in, because if he's to stupid to see he has better options, he's to stupid to know we need somebody!

The line the way it is, is on pace to give up about 50-60 sacks! How can you defend that?

Move somebody around, bring somebody in, DO SOMETHING-ANYTHING!

Daboll and Henne(in a 3 game old offense) have pulled off a top 12 ranking with this seive like O-line. If you solidify it in any possible way, even the slightest of improvements(which shouldn't be to hard to do, were talking Colombo-Carey)and were knocking on the door of being a top 10 offense. Keep in mind this offense only has 3 games under it's collective but, it's bound to improve.

Call me names, call me crazy, but I'm telling you, a little better blocking, a little more time for plays to develop, a little better hands and red zone execution and this offense can cover for alot of the defensive problems.

Tony! At least move Carey out and bench(waive)Colombo! It could be the difference between 4-12 and 9-7!

ARIZONA WANTS OUT OF KEVIN KOLB'S CONTRACT OF 64 MILLION CONTRACT,26 MIL GUARANTEED AFTER 1-2 START.

GIVE HENNE A NEW CONTRACT BEFORE HE LANDS SOME WHERE ELSE FOR 12 MILLION A YEAR.

Odin,
Now you're making sense.
Also since we're in the cut and re-sign mode we should re-sign our 2nd most important lineman form last year: Pat McQuistan.
I heard he got reinstated at Footlocker.

thank you kris, wont change either. guy has been awful from the start, i look forward to andrew luck

Have fun looking forward to a pipe dream.

As much as I would absolutely LOVE us drafting Luck or ALMOST any of the first rounders, it ain't going to happen.

You can take out your frustrations on me if you like, but fair warning. We won't be drafting a QB in the first round next year.

To many Acorns out there and to many other holes to fill. We'll be trading down with our first pick, but ah, Happy Pipe Dreams(SIGH).

Armando said he likes Sparano and that he is a good coach. Ask him to explain.

ODIN,
DUMB POST @ 9;59 PM.IT'S TO LATE .

(( BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE ))

no zona doesnt, they are loving him down there. fitz is back to being awesome with him. zona lost games by 1 and 3 points. road games

Very puzzling indeed...guess we should've expected something like this from a oc that had the 31st ranked offense out of 32 teams and was fired by holmgren...just sayin

LOVING HIM, MY FOOT MR .

MIKE VICK SUCK ALSO AT 1-2 START ,HE GOT HIS GUARANTEED MONEY .

If you guys are talking about Kolb I have to say the press is already starting to turn thier back on him and he's 3 games into an 80 game contract.

PRICE, WHY DON'T SAY SAME THING ABOUT HENNE AS KOLB ?

yes we would draft luck if we get the first pick

Henne is in the last year of his contract Kolb is in the first.
If you're a Cards fan you got that s h i t for 5 more years.
Henne's walking in 3 months.

sparano needs to watch the two-part special on nfl network chronicling
belichik's life as a coach. if anyone wonders how important the coach is, there will be no argument after watching this. it's interesting how he made a buffoon out of sparano to motivate his team in before the 2009 game in foxboro (you know, the one where davis was posterized twice by randy moss). as odin points out, the decision to move carey inside to ``save money" and replace him by one of the worst tackles in the nfl is beyond comprehension. the sad thing is, there are so many smart football coaches out there who would love to get the opportunity sparano has, and he is making a mockery of the profession. nice guy? who cares. this organization needs professional leadership, not a bunch of parcell's lackeys. p.s. belichik wasn't afraid to stand up to parcells. he knew he was a good coach, and he didn't need parcell's cronyism to succeed.

Only if you're a quitter Aloco. How the F is it too late to bench ONE GUY? Come on man, elevate you're game.

Slide ONE GUY back to his natural position and replace Colombo.

If you think that is a dumb move, well, you're even more ignorant than SpOrano.

I'm not trying to be offensive ALoco, I'm just getting sick of seeing all this ignorant banter thrown about in here.

The French thoght it was too late when Hitler invaded. You see how that worked out for them. The Germans got all the French women and the French Men had to make do.....with each other! Hence those fancy Berets!

The Dolphins aren't the French and they don't have the Americans to come save them. We have to do something to save ourselves and shoring up the O-line, or at least improving it shouldn't be that difficult. I mean were taking COLOMBO here!

If you don't want to be serious, PLEASE just ignore me altogeter in the future.

Thanks in advance!

austin,
He doesn't need to watch the movie.
Belichick showed us how to do it live in game 1: Run-N-Shoot. Don't waste game clock running the ball. Keep scoring until the other team gives.

I remember the last time I spoke to the Tuna 2 years ago, "...I make 5 million dollars a year and I play golf 5 times a week ..for free. When I wantr the opinions of janitors, bus drivers, the inebriated and the homeless I'll ask for it..."

The Tuna can go f u c k himself!

ODIN,
WHY CAN'T I VOICE MY VIEWS ON YOUR POST ,I SAID IT'S LATE SINCE WE R 0-3 AND 0-4 NEXT WEEK.
PRICE, THIS IS HENNE SECOND YEAR STARTING AND KEVIN KOLB IN HIS SECOND YEAR STARTING WITH 64 MIL CONTRACT AND HENNE WITH 345 DOLLARS CONTRACT,BE FAIR .

Price,

I know too things about Bellicheat.

1. He's a great Coach!

2. He's a REALLY smart Mother Fvcker!

It's obvious he lives, breathes, eats and dreams football. The gam plan he ran on us his year was nothing short of BRILLIANT!

I respect the guy as a Baller, but I detest the little RODENT!!!!

Part of the puzzling factor Mando IS, that DaBoll had a worse O than we did last year and it's now showing why. He was a cheap available pickup and Miami, Ross that is, bit on and was sold on Daboll's game plan. I'm still not convinced DaBoll is big upgrade..he is compared to old man henning but not to the other 31 NFL teams....

ODIN,
DID THE VIKINGS WENT TO WW11 OR THEY JUST MADE LOVE ?

HENNING WAS WAY BETTER THAN DABOL,WE WOULD NEVER BEEN 0-3 W/HENNING.

ALoco,

You can post your views, no problem my Brother.

But to call me or my post dumb because I advocate benching Colombo?

If I have to elaborate any further, then your missing something.

We have 13 games left and we have to play them regardless. Please explain to me how it's too late or dumb to bench Colombo?

I mean come on man, I made an in depth post on how and why we should bench Colombo.

But ah, you think your response was a good one in saying That's Dumb?

Please explain how it's dumb benching Colombo or apologize, please.

Just got me a pair of Air McQuistan's from footlocker..my new kicks are fly !

ODIN,
WE R PAYING MR COLOMBO FEW MILLION,THANKS TO THE AUTO SHOP MANAGER , SO HE SHOULD PLAY AND WORK HARD FOR HIS MONEY SINCE WE CAN'T WAIVE HIM AND GET SOME OF THE MONEY BACK . PLUS AL THE PLAYERS WE HAVE ARE SUCKS BUT HENNE .

ODIN,
WE SIGN A PLAYER FOR FEW MILLION A YEAR AND 3 WEEKS LATER,WE BENCH HIM?
WHAT ABOUT THE HONORABLE R.BUSH ?SHOULD WE BENCH HIM ALSO ?

Ah,yeah he is being compared to the rest of the "31 teams". We all know Henne is the worst QB ever, we all know this is the worst O-line ever. We all know this offense is a complete TRAINWRECK!

Despite this, Daboll has put together a No.12 rankng. That rankings is in comparison to the rest of the league. HELLO!

His new offense is ranked 21st in the red zone. PFT side note: Marshall's drops and Carpenters misses are the ONLY THING that kept Miami and Daboll out of the top 15 in Red Zone rankings.

Old man Hennings can eat his heart out and so can you. You have every right to post your OPINIONS, but in this regard, you couldn't be farther from the truth.

Dabolls been doing a solid job thus far.

ODIN,
W/DABOL..... 0-4
WE NEVER HAD THAT RECORD W/HENNING

What about the use of bush and some other players Odin? Running Reggie in the A gap and not doing any or should I say not many 4 WR, bunches, spreads? It seems like a simple offense setup for our simple minded Henne man-child lol

HENNING WAS WAY BETTER THAN DABOL,WE WOULD NEVER BEEN 0-3 W/HENNING.

Posted by: ALoco | September 29, 2011 at 10:36 PM

Ah, we went 0-3 EVERY single year HenningS was in Miami. All three of them.

EVERY SINGLE YEAR! ROTFLMAO! This place is just...........ah, never mind, it's not worth it!

Refresh app please mando

ODIN,
IT'S NOT TRUE ,WE WERE NEVER 0-3 W/HENNING.YOU R TRYING TO FAKE HISTORY .

ODIN,
I LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT I RESPECT AND LEARN A LOT FROM YOUR POSTS FRIEND.

0-3 is not a solid job. But who am I.

Well, I would like to answer this post because I like to talk football and I have some SOLID opinions on Daboll, both Good and Bad.

However, judging by your posts tonight, your obviously only interested in bashing.

That's cool, that's your right, but I'll pass just the same.

0-3 is a solid failure. But who am I.

0-3 is not a solid job. But who am I.

Posted by: Nobody | September 29, 2011 at 11:00 PM

0-3 would not be a solid job were Daboll playing all 22 starting positions plus coaching offense/defense and being the head coach. You know, that thing they call a team-LOL(OMG)!

And to think, someone just called one of our players Simple minded, Heh, heh!

Realistically speaking, ANYBODY that takes this offense to an overall 12th ranking is doing something right. Daboll isn't the cats a ss by any means and he defnitely pulled some head scratchers. But when you consider what he's working with and it's only their third game together in this new offense, he's OBVIOUSLY doing SOME things right!

Yeah man!

Daboll sucks! He's not doing a solid job becaue his offense put Carpenter and Marshall in position to single handedly lose 3 games........MAN!

Yeah, and the way his offense makes our defense look bad, HE SUCKS!

Bhwaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaa!!!!

(Oh Brother)

12th ranking means what when you are 0-3? I'll take 2-1 and a 24th ranking. Call me stupid.

ALL THAT RANKING CRAP IS FOR LOSERS AND LOW EDUCATED FANS TO KEEP THEM BUSY.

SB OR NOT ,THAT'S THE Q.

ALoco,

Thank You.

Though Hennings offenses did start the past three seasons 0-3.

This is our 4th straight season starting out 0-3. I think?

I could be wrong on this as I've made every effort to drink away my sorrows over the past three weeks!

PS: I'm to depressed to care enough to double check. If I'm wrong, please for my sake, just pretend I'm right!

Hennning started 2-0 last year. We beat Buffalo and Minnesota.

Daboll 0-3 today, 0-4 tomorrow.

There is no mystery here. Fire Sporano now. It is a damn shame when the fans are better at coaching then the actual coach. Tony is in a fantasy land, and Jeff Ireland is leading the way. It is almost like they are doing this on purpose. I thought I would never say this but I am really becoming no longer a Dolphin fan. I am not a football fan for anyone as far as the NFL goes besides the Fins. I am too old to switch now, my heart has been broken too many times with this team. I always had respect for them though but the Shula days are too far gone now. It's time to let go. The thought of them getting better anytime soon appears almost unreachable. It's like I am the fan with no team, you know like a woman w/out a country, Now all I root for is the Pats and Jets to lose. I have lost my spirit, and if you knew me before, you would think that was unfathomable. I will always remember the good days, but I think in my heart, I will not live to see another Dolphin team play with the spirit like those guys did from the 70's and 80's. Who would have thought that such a proud and great franchise like the Miami Dolphins could ever reach this rock bottom. What a laughing stock and joke we have become in the NFL. I never thought I would see this day.

ODIN,
WITH ALL THE PRIDE , WE CAN DECLARE THE FOLLOWING;;

WE THE DOLPHINS NOW PRESIDE IN THE BOTTOM CELLAR W/NO WINDOWS TO THE OUTSIDE.

Yeah, but the facts are, we're 0-3 AND ranked 12th overall. You have to deal with FACTS, like it or not.

The only reason I brought up the facts and statistics was to point out and refute a few absurd statements that I read. That's all.

Now I know it's fashionable to say stats are for loser, the stoopid, etc, etc. But that's simply untrue. Stats aren't the know all/end all, but they do make for some damn fine indicators.

PS: Just for the record, SB or not isn't the question. It's OUT of the QUESTION.

GOOD POST @ 11;33 PM.OUT OF THE Q INDEED ,

Here is a fact you can't argue with:

Nothing is worse than 0-3 after 3 games. After 3 games 0-3 = complete failure.

Hennning started 2-0 last year. We beat Buffalo and Minnesota.

Daboll 0-3 today, 0-4 tomorrow.

Posted by: Nobody | September 29, 2011 at 11:27 PM

THANK YOU Nobody, I needed that.

I'm at my wits end. I've been drinking myself through the transition of "Pre Season Homer Fan" to "Fan that's been smacked in the face by REALITY". I go through it every year and you'd think it gets easier, but it don't(sigh).

Ask Goodall for the Super Bowl trophy because we are 12th ranking with 0-3. Game over.
