The math of the Dolphins running back tandem

Yes, Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas will play Sunday. And here's how it should be split if coach Tony Sparano has a favorable situation and the game is going along in an orthodox fashion -- meaning Miami isn't down 27-0 to the Houston Texans as they were the last time the team's played in 2009.

Reggie Bush would be on the field 70-75 percent of the time. Thomas would serve 25-30 percent of the time -- at least initially until the rookie gets acclimated to the NFL game.

"I don't know how the games are going to go so that dictates touches," Sparano said this afternoon. "... But from our end, in a perfect world, I wouldn't mind it being somewhere around 70-30. Somewhere to that effect, where Reggie's ability on third down is a factor and we get Daniel going a little bit. And then at the end of the game we see which one has a hot hand."

The issue has been on Sparano's mind because Bush got every carry by a Dolphins runner against New England save two -- both carries that went to Lex Hilliard. That is not the way to keep Bush healthy and fresh.

"Obviously I didn't take Reggie out of the game last game," Sparano said. "So in a perfect situation, 70-75 percent of the time you keep Reggie in there. You use somebody else 25 percent of the time early on in this thing until you grow him a little bit and see how they handle this. That would be good for Reg."

Obviously, the Dolphins aren't comfortable simply thrusting Thomas in there. Obviously, he hasn't exploded onto the scene, suggesting the team must use him as much as possible as soon as possible. So the Dolphins will work him him slowly.

And Sparano, meanwhile, will be on the lookout for other players that perhaps played too many downs against New England but can't keep up that pace:

"I have to do a little bit better job of play counts of a few guys," he said. "We have to get some plays off of them. Otherwise it ends up being a long season."

What's the game plan?
Are we gonna get out-coached again?
Have we learned to defend the tight end?
Have we learned what a hurry up offense looks like?

Are our coaches serious about this game or are they just going through the motions?

odinseye

Suggesting I consider Armando on par with Belichk is beyond any conclusion any one else would have drawn from what I said.

-There is so much wrong with your last two posts it's hardly worth the trouble. Your squirming dude! YOU YOURSELF responded to MY POST about Armando not making a SINGLE COMMENT about Henne's performance. In response YOU compared Armando's non reporting/commenting to Bellicheat not praising his team. THAT is what you did, I'm not distorting ANYTHING, own it. BTW, if you think Bellicheat wasn't satisfied with Brady and the offenses performance, you got problems.

If you have a serious reply fine, but if you are going to totally distort my responses there is no point in even responding.

-As I said above, I didn't distort a thing, own YOUR comparison.

Sports writers by nature are critics,

-So if we had signed Palmer and he put up the same numbers with the same outcome, Mando wouldn't even maention it because he's now a critic? ROTFLMAO! Oh brother. Nuff said there I bet.

coaches by nature have to be critics, so there is a common thread there. After another embarrassing loss on national tv, I'm not the least bit surprise the focus is more on how we right the ship rather than gloat over one players performance.

Posted by: DevilsAdvocate | September 15, 2011 at 04:13 PM

The focus obviously has to be on the D and I never EVER suggested gloating about ANYTHING. Talk about trying to distort things-SHEESH! Instead of Devils Advocate maybe a better served moniker would be Slippery Devil?

The obvious point I've made, and I'm positive you're aware as well, is that after all the CONSTANT railing on Henne(39 articles this off season)You'd think Armando would at least write ONE SINGLE sentence about Henne setting a record and having his best day as a Pro. I mean this is a BRAND NEW OFFENSE for Christs Sake and it is a question mark and major concern!

You go ahead and defend this all you want. But I'll guarantee you, under the same exact circumstances, this would get AT LEAST A MENTION in 31 other NFL cities. By their SPORTSWRITERS, BEAT WRITERS, CRITICS, and/or whatever other apologetical labels you want to place on them.

Nonetheless, I hope Thomas and Clay can contribute substantially and we can get the W.

Whine all you want.
B!tch all you want.
Slam each other all you want.

Problems lies with the coaching staff.

They should be placed under the microscope as much as any player.

The coaching staff needs to be assessed, analyzed, dissected, and troubleshot just as much as a player.

armando

lex didnt get a goaline attempt he got a 4th and 1 on the first drive - his initial momentum stopped he drove through on second effort and got a first down- why this play wasnt repeated or something similar on th pats half yard line i be quite happy to ask daboll or sparano if u want to give me their number

(as i recall)

Some of the bloggers here are way over emotionally hyped up in my humble opinion.

odinseye, you are a case really. But, anyone that should be obvious to any reasonable observer.

Posted by: DevilsAdvocate | September 15, 2011 at 04:50 PM

You have every right to post your humble opinions.

Matter of fact, I'll defend to the death your right to post your humble opinions that don't matter to ANYONE. ;P

Hey Daniel Thomas - do you want people to buy merchandise with your name and number on it?

Yes? - then step up and deliver!!!!!

0-2 this team has no heart and soul
staff should have been replaced end of
2 consecutive 7-9 seasons.
love the Dolphins, but there is no urgency
to win now in their approach.

The blame for Monday night's debacle should be placed at the feet of the coaching staff.
Specifically, conditioning.

Dave Puloka - I am calling you out!

HEY TONY YOU ARE STILL THE COACH IT IS GOING TOBE A LONG SEASON ANYWAYS

Did you all know that Dave Puloka is the conditioning coach?

That's DAVE PULOKA!

by the way folks

it was our d that sucked (not just in a respiratory manner)

they whiffed (multiple players on single plays) on tackles and were yards from receivers on the pats first 2 possessions before they even got out of breath, then they just couldnt even pretend to look like they were gonna kill guys on the next play, they just looked like they wanted to go home

DESPITE the above I believe the D will pull their heads out of their ego's and start playing like they should instead of just thinking their great and someone else will make the tackle

11-5 here we come, doom and gloom merchants who think everyone sucks and we need a change of FO- i understand why you think that, most the evidence points to it

look deeper

we will surprise

Odinseye, I don't normally criticize other posters because whatever man, you have your opinions. But really man you're starting to grate on me. All you do is whine about Henne not getting credit and saying Armando doesn't like the dude.

You know what I think? I think you are bringing this blog down. If you want it to be a Henne lovefest on a week he was good but not great, go start your own Henne fan club and cheer him on.

Some of us are not blind. We saw the game for what it was: One game. That was it. Let's see how things roll by the end of the season.

Dear Mr. Salguero

"I don't know how the games are going to go so that dictates touches," Sparano said this afternoon. "...

Was coach talking about football or spin the bottle

Soiled :)

Okay everybody ready?

Five jumping jacks! - good job.

Three sit ups! - good job.

Two push ups! - good job.

Run twenty yards! - good job.

Okay everybody, see you at tomorrow's conditioning drills.

This team has to be able to run the ball to win. If they put it on Henne every game, we'll be 4-12.

Please stop running Reggie Bush between the tackles all the time. It's fine once in a while to keep people honest. All the time is a recipe for punting.

(love the blog salguero)

actually i LIKE TONY I AM JUST NOT SURE IF HE IS UP TO THE JOB AT HAND 4 LOSES IN A ROW TO END THE SEASON 2 YEARS IN A ROW AND THEN THIS LAST GAME , I THINK U SHOULD START TO SEE HIM GETTING BETTER IF HE WAS GOING TO, ALMOST ALWAYS LOOKS OUT COACHED AND OF COURSE IRELAND HASN'T HELPED

how bout the play where they bring paul soliai in at the 1 yd line. at 350lbs he doesnt block anyone or push the pile? he just stands there(gets in the way)? who is responsible for that? there was no chance of scoring. didnt the media ask sparano?

BUT WHAT DO I KNOW. I AM RETARDED.

Outstanding question greg z.

The media wants their interview (that's all they want).
If you ask the hard questions, they won't let you interview.

IF WE LOSE VS HOUSTON,AT LEAST MIKE NOLAN WILL BE FIRED IN ERNEST ................

buffet of knowledge

"I have to do a little bit better job of play counts of a few guys,"

How about our stable of TEs? They can't all be suffering from cramps.

Which TEs are we using in 2-TE formation? Do we know which TEs have actually played, apart from (the marvelous) Fasano?

"I have to do a little bit better job of play counts of a few guys," he said. "We have to get some plays off of them. Otherwise it ends up being a long season."

Hey Coach - Did it take you three years to figure that out?

nah, DO YOU REALLY READ WHAT THE COACH SAYS ?

I NEVER DO .

Aloco,

YOU BE FRANK AND I'LL BE ERNEST

ARMANDO FAKING ME IN BLUE.......PRICELESS.......

BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE.............

A mystery for Ireland bashers (jeff)

Rick Spielman: director of personnel/GM with Dolphins from 2000-2004.
Did much more damage than Ireland could possibly dream of.

As of 2006 he's V.P. of player personnel with the Vikings and they have a pretty decent team- we're picking up their leftovers!

How this so? What you say?

No matter what Sparano says, I always hear the same thing - "I am not a competent NFL coach'

My problem is the head coach was scare of big Bill, he should have fired his OC early on last year, the fact that he kept a coach who had no clue makes me think a change is coming for the head coach. Bill

carlitos

some people learn from their mistakes

some people pay for other peoples mistakes!

sparano will probably be outcoached. 1-11 at home games. wow. I can't believe this guy still has a job.

ross messed it up last year, he wanted him fired but nobody wanted the job. this year hes def gone

Every night, Sparano finishes his evening prayer with...

"....and thank you again for letting Bill Parcells pick me as one of his friends, Amen."
