The math of the Dolphins running back tandem

Yes, Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas will play Sunday. And here's how it should be split if coach Tony Sparano has a favorable situation and the game is going along in an orthodox fashion -- meaning Miami isn't down 27-0 to the Houston Texans as they were the last time the team's played in 2009.

Reggie Bush would be on the field 70-75 percent of the time. Thomas would serve 25-30 percent of the time -- at least initially until the rookie gets acclimated to the NFL game.

"I don't know how the games are going to go so that dictates touches," Sparano said this afternoon. "... But from our end, in a perfect world, I wouldn't mind it being somewhere around 70-30. Somewhere to that effect, where Reggie's ability on third down is a factor and we get Daniel going a little bit. And then at the end of the game we see which one has a hot hand."

The issue has been on Sparano's mind because Bush got every carry by a Dolphins runner against New England save two -- both carries that went to Lex Hilliard. That is not the way to keep Bush healthy and fresh.

"Obviously I didn't take Reggie out of the game last game," Sparano said. "So in a perfect situation, 70-75 percent of the time you keep Reggie in there. You use somebody else 25 percent of the time early on in this thing until you grow him a little bit and see how they handle this. That would be good for Reg."

Obviously, the Dolphins aren't comfortable simply thrusting Thomas in there. Obviously, he hasn't exploded onto the scene, suggesting the team must use him as much as possible as soon as possible. So the Dolphins will work him him slowly.

And Sparano, meanwhile, will be on the lookout for other players that perhaps played too many downs against New England but can't keep up that pace:

"I have to do a little bit better job of play counts of a few guys," he said. "We have to get some plays off of them. Otherwise it ends up being a long season."

Ha Ha!

ALoco just put Fading Fan on the Practice Squad!

:>O

If we lose any starter on the offense due to injury, season is over. No depth anywhere.

No depth on the oline
No depth at RB
No depth at QB
No depth at TE

No fans in the stadium

Games to be blacked out

Season ticket holders have not paid for their tickets and a credit collection agency had to be called(have to admit that is hilarious!)

The visiting team has more fans than the home team.

1-9 home 'streak'

Owner tried to fired the coach, and everyone knows he will this year.

Jeff Ireland is nothing more than a college scout with a GM title

Owner Ross knows nothing about football.

Visitors handle the home climate better than the home team.

Other than that, things are looking pretty good.

A NEW LEGUGE IS BEING MADE BY SOME, WE SHALL CALL THE BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE LEAGUE, FADING WILL BE THE FIRST,THIS IS A GROUP SIMILER TO THE OAKLAND RADERS.

fading fan,

if Jesus returns to settle accounts (whole world goes to hell) we won't have to worry about cramps and/or offensive holding. Feeling better?

You people realize that Sparano has a winning record as head coach of the Miami Dolphins right?? and has done a far better job then the 4 coaches before him... Jimmy Johnson, Dave Wandstadt, Nick Saban, and Cam Cameron. True Wandstadt actually had a good winning percentage, but we all know he is an idiot. And also realize Sparano took over a 1-15 team while JImmy Johnson and others took over at least average teams. Before you push him and Ireland out of town realize that being average is far better than being pathetic like we were with the other 4 of them. We just lost to the best/second best team in the NFL by 14 points, it is not the end of the world. You all need to get a clue.

Jesus? He came and gone two thousand and eleven years ago. No worries there.

Classy.

out of shape for the no huddle and mostly shell shocked! They looked to me like they were thinking way more than actually trying to play.

The problem with this stament Odin....is that Armando made a blog about the PATS Offence...in Pre-season...the Bucs game....

If a lowly beat reporter gets it...you would LIKE to think a coaching staff gets it.....I would like to think that.....and prepare my TEAM accordinly for WEEK 1....

We still don't know what we've got yet. Except for Henne! He looks fired up to me. Just the way a quarterback on the last year of his contract should look; hungry. But, he can't do it all by himself.

What happened to the Defence against NE was a fluke! They should step it up this week and we'll begin to see if we really are "a top 3 defence" like some are saying.

We don't know what kind of running game we have. I'd throw D. Thomas and Clay into the fire and see what they've got. And, mix in Larry Johnson. Then, whomever has the "hot hand" ride throughout the game. LJ gets better the more you run him. Sitting him on the bench last game must mean that he wasn't up to snuff on the playbook.

Sparano needs to get a handle on this team and show us that he can coach a winning team. All I've seen out of him is fist-pumps and glorified cheerleading. Ross needs to spend some money and hire Tony a media coach! Sparano's "er's" and "you knows" make him sound like an idiot! And, he hasn't shown anyone anything to dispute that perception!

Just beat the Texans! Figure it out! Find a way to win! Get fired up! Then, the fans will get fired up and you can put butts in the seats again!

Don't do stupid things on the field! This is supposed to be a "professional football team!" Act like it!

GO FINS!!!

"YOUPEOPLE", WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY "YOU PEOPLE"?

What are all these positives that Armando is supposed to be writing about? The defense? The great 24 points we scored? What? Or maybe Odin's love affair with Henne. How about who going to cover Andre Johnson? This team has much to prove. And no one likes losing games over dumb play calling. Go Fins and please do better!

"YOUPEOPLE", WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY "YOU PEOPLE"?

Quoting from poster at 10:10

Steve,

Johnson- pompous, arrogant buffoon
Wandstadt- not too smart (poor baby!)
Satan
Cam Cameron- we hardly knew ye

you're right -our Tony not that bad in comparison.

Tracy474...that was NO FLUKE.....

Many on here...to include myself said the "D" was suspect....when they face good teams they didn't show up...YES...they dominated lesser teams...but could never match up to teams on our level or above.....

Getting off the feild on 3rd and long was almost impossible.....and quite embarrasing if you ask me....

I once said this "D" needs to be a legit top 12 to make a playoff push.....I am not sure you they will achieve that stat....

Here's a thought:

Ross needs to hire Don Shula or Dan Marino (by the way, Happy Birthday, Dan) to take over the same position that Parcells held. Then, get out of the way and let them do their job! If they think that they can make something out of Sparano and Ireland, okay then...show us. If they want to fire them and hire someone else...fine, we'll accept that too.

It would immediately bring the fans back onboard. And, when you go shopping for coaches, or quarterbacks, you're less likely to be ignored!

It would make the front office relevant again!

Just a thought...

GO FINS!!!

Tracy

Marino had that position. He quit after 3 weeks. Don't think he'll be signing up anytime soon.

TRACY,I THINK DON SHULA IS 110 YAERS OLD, I THENK HE GULFS WITH DAN HENNING ON THURDAY MORNINGS.

Dan Marino had his chance...HE WANTED NO PART OF IT.....

and I don't blame him.....Let Marino stay retired....DolFANS need to stop living in the past......

We need the next NEW THING....not some flamed out-burn-out....

Seriously, this team has way more problems than many fans realize.

Half the players you think are stars are not. 1-9 at home is no fluke, its revealing the truth.

No argument here, I have to agree.

The conditioning part without a doubt.

As far as being mentally prepared, they weren't there either. I don't know if the Coaches didn't prepare them for the defensive game plan/scheme or if it was over preparation to the point of over thinking everything and not being able to execute.

Whatever the case was, they were obviously ill prepared across the board. I can't point a direct finger because I wasn't there. But the players and Coaches both have to share in the blame, to what degree for either, I have no idea.

Either way, from top to bottom, massive failure!

Our defence should be fine...as long as they start playing with a sense of urgency! They HAVE to learn to play at a faster pace. They need to attack so that they aren't back on their heels! Brady would look up, see the personnel on the field, or hear their signals (yes, he got all of our stuff from Edds) and proceed to rip them apart. Kind of like what defences did to Henne under Dan Henning! It helps when you know what the opposition is going to do before they do it. I'm pretty sure that Nolan has changed some things and I doubt that the Texans have any inside info. But, Nolan's system IS well known in the NFL, so we shall see what happens, huh?

GO FINS!!!

Yes, Marino WAS offered that position. And, he accepted! But, when he found out from Wayne H. that it was just going to be a figurehead position and they weren't going to actually let him do something (build the team), he declined!
Honestly, most fans know this already, guys.

Fire Sparano NOW!!

As far as being mentally prepared, they weren't there either. I don't know if the Coaches didn't prepare them for the defensive game plan/scheme or if it was over preparation to the point of over thinking everything and not being able to execute.

They were hypnotized during the pregame speech, and then Tony forgot to snap his fingers. JT told you how it was, Ricky too, must be true!

Odinseye,

Back me up on this if you would. The question is why Marino declined the Director of Football Operations position when Wayne H. offered it to him?

Since you mentioned my name, I feel obliged.

Who said ANYTHING about "all these positives" other than YOU?

You throw comments my way, at least try to know what you're talking about. Try that cheap shyt without hiding behind a key board. Put words in my mouth in the real world boy, that'd be the FIRST and LAST time!

The point stands and you know you can't refute it-PERIOD!

Not one sentence about a record setting performance from our BRAND SPANKING NEW Offense?

Huh?

To any one who thinks our Tony 'sounds like an idiot': have you ever seen Bill Cowher speaking? He's no high I.Q. intellectual either!

Tracy....

He declined....because Marino may KNOW how to throw a football....but he realized that doesn't mean SH&t when it come to running FOOTBALL OPERATIONS......

TRUE FANS KNOW THAT......and I don't fault a man for knowing his limitations......

and you shoudn't either....nor make up excuses...when MARINO doesn't...

I THINK THE PIZZA MAKER SOPORNO AND THE BAGEL MAKER NOLEN SHOULD OPEN UP A NEW BUESSNESS CALLED PIZZA/BAGAL, IT WOULD SELL ALOT IN THEMORNING AND HAVE GREAT FOLLOWING AT NIGHT CAUSE THEY SELL PIZZA,MAYBE THEY CAN SELL BEER AND WINE,THAT WAY ODEN AND FLIPPER WILL GO CAUSE BEER IS SERVED THERE, EITHER WAY, THEY NEED TO FIND A NEW LINE OF WORK CAUSE METHINK THEY BE UNEMPLOYED IN JANURAYEY.

Also....

Was it a "figure head" job...WHEN PARCELS ACCEPTED IT.......NO...it wasn't.....

So....what lead you to believe it was a "figure head" job when Marino was taking it......

Futher more...if it the job was offered to Marino as a "figure head" job....then that tells me that OWNERSHIP had zero faith in his personnel decision making....

and with no background in those specifics.....can you blame them.....

He declined....because Marino may KNOW how to throw a football....but he realized that doesn't mean SH&t when it come to running FOOTBALL OPERATIONS......

Posted by: kris | September 15, 2011 at 10:42 PM

And the other question is, why would a multi millionaire HOF QB even want to do that? That is a lot of hours, lot of demand. He is living the high live, time for family, cush tv gig....way better option.

KRIS,ALL YOU NEED TO POINT AT IS JOHN ELWAY IN DENVER,HE"S BETTER OFF SELING HIS USED CARS THEN RUNNING A FOOTBALL TEAM.

NO BLACKOUT!!! Ross has bought up the unused seats! Season ticket holders can get an extra 4 tickets (8 if you're in a box).

The streak continues! (See the Herald's new post)

GO FINS!!!

kris & fading fan,

yes, our Dan better suited to yukking-it-up on the sunday pre-game shows. And what about that sullen Cowher- what a buzz kill!

Whats up guys?I see that the forum is slowly going south.

This team is Marshall, Bess, Long, decent dline, and thats about it. Vontae is just better than average. Long way for this team to go.

Also I firmly believe a different coach would get much more out of these players.

Well, it would take a lot of money to get Dan out of that nice cushy NFL Analyst gig! Where his opinion matters!

To ALL....

Marino may be the greatest of all time (GOAT)........

but even the the GOAT....wasn't the answer to all of our woes....doeing what he does best....

Doing what he knows least (possibly) will only further tarnish his great legacy in the FINS organization.....

Odinseye,

Posted by: Tracy474 | September 15, 2011 at 10:39 PM

Marino later admitted he declined/resigned because everytime he looked at Wanny's Pornstache, he had an overwhelming desire to punch him the face.

I thought everyone new this!

Seriously, Tracy you don't need any back up. The way I understood it, it was exactly as you say. He didn't care for being a figurehead!

A competitively natured guy like him, I don't blame him at all!

Well, you can interject whatever you want and spout your opinion how ever you want to spin it, but I'm going by the words that I saw come out of Marino's mouth when asked about what happened.

Tony Montanta...

I am not a Fan of Cowher at all...he will bring 1990's ball to Miami.....we just got finished playing 180's ball with Parcell's.....

While I hate Sporano as the HC....I am not ready to discuss a possible replacement in week 1......

give me till about week 6.....

Thanks Odinseye! And, I wouldn't have blamed him for smacking Wanny in the face. Lord knows I wanted to!!!

Just breezin on by...

I see some of you are slooooowly coming around to REALITEEEEEE.

It will all be for the best in the end. Have faith! A real coach will arrive! We are looonnnggg overdue.

I'll be back to check up on y'all...

Are we re-writing history now......

because it coudn't possibly be the FACT...that MARINO doesn't know SH@T about running a football team....

just push thos pesky facts aside.......

lets just talk about it how we would "like to remember it....

Wow, Buy 1 get 4 free?, Now thats a bargain.

Direcor of football operations doesn't automatically have final say on player personel decisions.

In Marino's deal it wasn't included.

In Parcells deal it was an obvious stipulation.

Marino basically had a glorified Mike Dee position. Yippie Yi Ki yeah!

BIG DIFFERENCE!

TRACY...ODIN....Here is my link....where is yours.....
Marino resigns as Dolphins head of football operations
EmailPrint
DAVIE, Florida - Dan Marino was capable of adjusting to defenses for the Miami Dolphins but not in the front office.

Just three weeks after accepting the newly created position, Marino resigned as senior vice president of football operations, he and the Dolphins announced Tuesday in a joint statement.

Marino retired after the 1999 season, ending a 17-year career as the most prolific quarterback in NFL history, and had been working as an analyst for HBO and CBS.

Soon after taking his first front office position, it became clear Marino would have to make too many lifestyle changes to fill the job.

"I knew it would involve a significant lifestyle change, but after further reflection, it became clear that those adjustments were ones that my family and I are not prepared to make at this time," Marino said.

Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga said he was disappointed in Marino's decision, mostly because he thought the former quarterback would make "an outstanding football executive." But he understood the reasons.

"Dan's decision will not adversely affect our ability to prepare for the 2004 season," Huizenga said. "I still firmly believe in the structure that we have created and in the people we have in place to carry out their responsibilities."

Huizenga said the team will search for someone else to "oversee the entire football operation."

While Marino set all kinds of passing records, he never won a Super Bowl and was looking to do that as an executive, with Rick Spielman serving as general manager and Dave Wannstedt as coach.

The Dolphins have missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons, forcing Huizenga to shake up things.

Marino is the NFL's all-time leader with 61,361 passing yards, 420 touchdowns and 4,967 completions in 17 years with the Dolphins, who retired his No. 13 - the second jersey to be retired by the team.

Marino is a lock for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005, his first year of eligibility.
