Garrard availability may test Dolphins' Henne faith

These next couple of days will be very interesting around the NFL's quarterback-hungry teams because for the first time in nearly two months, a solid quarterback talent is available.

It should be interesting to watch how the Dolphins react.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will soon announce that quarterback David Garrard is being released. He becomes a free agent, able to sign with any team he wishes, any team that wants him.

Do the Dolphins become involved?

Two things are clear: Garrard's first choice is to remain a starter in the league. So he'll likely first deal with teams that will give him some sense he can take the starting job once he gets up to speed on their offense.

The second thing that is clear is that only teams with a relatively weak starting QB situation will be at the front of the line for Garrard. Washington might be an option. Oakland, maybe the Colts might also be interested. Perhaps Seattle, Carolina, Cincinnati and San Francisco get involved.

It will be interesting to see if the Dolphins test the waters on Garrard at all. It will be much more interesting -- as in seismic shift interesting -- if they jump into those waters head first.

I don't know if the Dolphins are going to do that. The next 30 hours or so will be telling.

I do know this: Garrard's availability may be a sign of exactly how truly committed and certain the Dolphins are on Chad Henne.

The club has been swearing up and down that it is putting its faith in Henne. Fine, we get that. We also get this faith grew a whole lot more ardent after the team tried and failed to draft a quarterback, then tried and failed to add a possible Henne replacement in free agency and the trade market. So let's be honest here.

The faith in Henne felt akin to a man with no money for shoes extolling the virtues of going barefoot.

Now Miami's faith will be tested.

Here is another thought: If the Bengals jump into the Garrard sweepstakes and actually sign him, they just might feel comfortable enough with their QB situation to loosen the shackles they have around Carson Palmer. It might be their way of breaking clear of the past and the shadow Palmer still casts over the franchise.

This scenario is purely speculation, but if it were to happen, there would be little doubt the Dolphins would then become players in the Palmer availability. On that, I'm certain.

So watch the next day or so. Watch how this all plays out.

The Dolphins may not be a player in the least in the matter, which would show their faith in Henne is more than just talk. But if they are even casual players in the derby for the available QB, we'll know that strong faith is having a forbidden fruit moment.

Actually, Craig M, I'm getting a whole lot more strict these days. Here we go... Watch impersonators disappear.

Posted by: Armando Salguero | September 06, 2011 at 05:11 PM

Hey? Where did everybody GO?

Ok seriously, You mean it Armando?

Armando,

Please delete the flame wars.

Ozkar, Its like back when the fins had Marino in his prime, Great Offense, No Defense., The Great teams come together around week 9 or 10, Thats when you know the teams for real.

Joe, wasn't talking about you. Was talking about the guy who reposted one of Craigs posts from a month ago.

The right thing to do would have been to ask me first who I was referring too before commenting. I wrote my two posts before even seeing one post from you (Joe Shmoe).

But you know now after reading that insane post things are starting to look fishy. You went off before even knowing the truth. You assumed I was talking to you and then accused me of making an assumption. Then to top it off you tell me I've joined the "ranks" of Craig unknowingly showing me that you have some sort of grudge held out for the guy.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, looks really familiar. If you're trying to prove to everyone that it's NOT you posting about Craig under different names, you're doing a pi*s poor job of it.

Garrard?

Not for the prerequisites and the kind of money Armando alludes to.

We only have two QB's on the roster so Garrard sounds appealing.

But to be the starter? This year? Not gonna happen!

Mando, either you're trying to stir up something to write about or you've lost your mind! Garrard is NOT on Miami's radar. The Dolphins will not become involved in this unless Carson Palmer is somehow on the table (a very longshot at best). So, find something else to write about, okay? Hey, why not actually write about the Dolphins for a change? Leave the speculation and "what if's" to your palm reader/astrologer or whomever it is you're getting this garbage from!

Miami will score more TD's that FG's against the Pats! And, will more than double what New England totals. The Pats will score more FG's than TD's. At least one of Miami's TD's will be either caused by, or scored by, their defense. Now, there's a prediction! Not, Garrard over Henne in Miami! Based on that:

Miami-27
Pats-13

GO FINS!!!

Why bother with Garrard, he hasn't won and he just got cut, meaning his value isn't great. Sink or swim with Henne this year. If the O-line does it's job and Henne can't produce, then you have your answer and you can try for Andrew Luck next year!

LouD,

We're you accusing me of being one of the simpletons ruining things here?

See now here's the problem. We can't even be sure that's Armando. Marc showed me last year that you can impersonate anyones name even in typepad. It took him 10 seconds.

So for all we know that's a fake Armando and he's sucking people into another circle j**k.

Tracy, kindly show me the line where I said Garrard is on the Dolphins radar.

Thought so.

Armando,

That's GREAT news!!.....thanks very much! Now maybe some of us can get back to talking football.....cheers!!

Fake odinseye go away.

Big Worrie again is O-Line, Now in its 3rd year of rebuilding., When will they be done?Is this a goverment job? Just Wondering?

Lou, the difference between real and fake me is real me can delete posts and ban folks.

If you post something offensive like, "Armando is not the most wonderful dude in the world," I can erase it.

Go ahead. Try.

Good riddance to the impostors....

Armando, are you in favour of the team adding Garrard? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me, honestly. Palmer, yes....but not Garrard.

Actually CraigM, I'm not in favor of it. I was simply setting the table for what this all means.

Of course, that turns into "I hate Henne" or "You're bashing the team" or "Write about football" or something else totally ridiculous.

I tell you what I was for:

I was for keeping AJ Edds. I was for upgrading the TE position with a GOOD player and not making a desperation signing at the last minute like Dante Rosario -- who isn't good enough for Carolina.

Fake odinseye go away.

Actually, this is the real me. I just wondered if because I was arguing with the troll earlier that maybe you thought I was a part of it?

I just wanted to explain because the thing the troll was getting to me over I took very seriously.

LouD,

I do in fact believe that is Armando.

Nice to see some of the riff-raff gone from this blog. Maybe we can start talking about football again, instead of people's sexual preference and some of the other jumk that people were throwing around.

You see, Odinseye? Gone.

The interesting thing is that I come here everyone else seems to flee.

On most blogs, people want to exchange ideas and chat with the reporter/moderator/author.

Here, I show up and folks scatter.

Was it something I said?

It is Armando! Hallelujah a few minutes of troll free blogging,,,,,woo hoo!

It's the Real Armando. YEAH!

Arando, I'm picturing you as Marshall Matt Dillon right now. Riding in on your horse and cleaning up the town.

(all the women are murmuring: "My Hero")

Mando, Who will you be picking for your 53 man blog this year?,Any new rookies making the cut?, I Say LouD,Oscar Canosa, Maybe Myself?, What about the Vets being cut?,Cubean,Marc From Montral, Odin, Aloco?, Well you be cutting any of these vets?

Armando,

Totally agre about Edds. Don't understand that one. Was he REALLY the worst of our ten linebackers? Anybody add him to the PS yet?

How would you feel about the team going after Darious Butler? I'm scratching my head on some of the decisions that are being made in NE.

Ofcourse. Zack Miller was there and for the life of me I can't figure out why they didn't go after him. That would give us Zack as a #1 and Fasano as #2. Two tight end sets would have been awesome. With Gates bringing the speed on the outside, Marshall playing big on the other side, Bess, and Reggie out of the backfield. Another TE would have been the icing on the cake and would have given Henne more support. Makes no sense

Armando,

You said how you feel about the TE position and I agree, MOSTLY.

The question is, do you think we've upgraded thwe position in the past few days?

If so, how much?

sure, sink with henne for another year. then come next year and people will still say, henne will produce this year. COME ON MAN! same old broken record season after season.

This guy, Armando, doesn't waste an opportunity to badmouth Henne and question his ability. Gerrard or Palmer. If they are so fuc king good, why would any team let them go?
I don't really know why Armando has such a hard on for any of those two flunkies or what type of mental obsession he has against Henne, but he is the only one of the Herald's sports writers who initiated and continues to have a vendetta against Henne. Gerrard and Palmer may have been good at some point in time in the past, but are they really what the Miami Dolphins need to build a winning team? Yeah, they are, just like Daunte Caulpepper, Trent Green, A.J. Feeley and others were. I hope Armando will evenetually have to eat his words and his own sh it, because this story is really getting old and he is annoying me. Hey man, don't you have anything else to write about?

Mando, Tell us Mr.Soiled Bottoms has a Venue on this blog.PLEASE.

You've got some good bloggers here Armando, even the ones I disagree with. That's what forums like these were intended for.

However, from time to time there are a few guys who come on here with nothing better to do than throw names around and insult people. To me there's no room for that. You have a better blog when people are exchanging ideas and being respectful of others on here.

I think the Patriots have flaws and BB is trying to cover for them. Yes, they are a good team, but beatable. They are the NFL's version of the Atlanta Braves, a good regular season team, not so much post season. Defense is average but plays better due to schemes, BB will look to confuse Henne. They have old guys upfront that will wither in the 2nd half, Dolphins just need to keep it close. BB will try to score early and fast, it helps his team's confidence and keeps other teams fearful. If Miami can bring heat on Brady like Detroit and exploit a suspect secondary by passing, they can win!!!!

No Armando it is something that is wrong with the mentality of some of the posters in here. I think people are scared of you. LOL, They don't want to have to be themselves and that's scary to them (and confusing to the rest of us).

Here is what I'm hearing about these New England moves:

Belichick is not happy with his team -- particularly his defense.

He wants personnel that will allow him to be more of an attacking type unit instead of a bend-don't break unit.

Butler is a nice kid, but not a press corner or man corner.

Meriweather freelanced too much to suit Belichick.

I don't think the Pats are a 14-win team this year. They had a lot of things go right last year. I think this year, many years of drafting low and not adding big-time playmakers catches up with them a bit. Not saying they will stink. But I don't see them winning 14.

odinseye, ok so it was you. And no way, I wasn't talking about you. You're one of the few good ones in here.

That the team tried and failed to draft a quarterback is fallacy if nor an outright lie. The have numerous QBs available in all of the rounds and did not draft one because they didn't want to draft one. Garrard is very banged up and would be a stopgap measure at best; sso I wouldn't sign him unless he accepts being a bak-up. It's time to let Henne swim or drown.

This cracks me up: Check out xerxesblack's comment.

It is exactly what I said earlier. If I write anything about QBs without waving a flag and singing a song about Chad Henne, I'm out to get him.

Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.

Armando,

I don't see them winning 14 either. They are still the champions of this division and will continue to be until somebody knocks them off. But to me they are a team searching for a little bit of an identity right now. They are still Tom Brady's team, the best QB in the league but they don't run the ball particularly well, they don't rush the QB particularly well and they are average at catching the ball, with the exception of their two TE's. I think they are vulnerable.

Now having said that, they are still very well coached and still have the best QB in the league. But the Jets have shown how to beat them. Hopefully that is what Nolan and company are preparing for as we speak.

The most confusing thing about Edds to me is the fact that we still have John stinking Jerry on the roster. Are they really just trying to cover their butts because of the higher draft position on Jerry. I know they play two different positions but it's a spot and you can never use enough good lbs in the 3-4. No one has signed Edds can he be signed to the practice squad or is there a feeling he will get snatched up Armando?

Armando

Do Sparano and Ireland ever get asked tough questions or is it always the same basic info stuff? I'm wondering if they were asked why didn't we pick up a REAL TE when we had the opportunity? Is it a money thing? Seems like they will to spend big on a couple of players and then go bargain basement for all the rest.

Doesn't it seem like our running game disappears if Reggie goes down? We have a lot riding on an injury prone player.

Mando, The Pats were in a "Rebuilding" Year last year and posted a 14 and 2 record., The Pats play Horrible 2 games a year(In the last 8 years)(While Brady is QB) You got to hope your teams playing them one those 2 weeks. Agree or Disagree?

Armando said the pats are slipping?

Wel you all know that I've alway said Mando has a great head on his shoulders(snicker, snicker).

Armando tell us anything you can about Cook, the new O-lineman. Heard any rumors that he might creep into the line up?

Edds was making plenty of tackles thats all I know. What is the real story there Mando? It does not seem plausible he was the worst LB of the large bunch.

Armando,

I owe you an apology for high jacking your live Dal VS. Fins game with my complaints. Understand I wasn`t asking you to take time out of your busy day to have to play blog COP to what amounts to an Infantile Pie Throwing competiton. I just took ofense to the fact that when enough was enough and I responded you eliminated my response but left that other garbage up whch was insulting and SICK all at the same time.

I understand sometimes I can let my emotions get the better of me and for that I truely am SORRY but it really was somewhat overdue that somebody respond to what I know amounts to one to three people tops even if my response was expletive ridden. I also would like to clarify that I never asked anybody to leave Dophins in depth only mentioned another sight about the Dolphins which operates on Friday or gameday with more of a humorous atmosphere while keeping on point with Football not engaging in ripping everybody with juvenille stupidity. There are about 30 posts over at that sight on a Friday as opposed to the well over 400 you get, giving you an idea of the little threat those kids from the Miami New Times are to your blog.

I don`t feel you need to post 3 or 4 times a day as long as you give us worthwhile accounts of the ins and outs. All that posting Omar Kelly does that in some instances is nothing more than small talk about what color of socks somebody put on or the team menu for lunch is unecessary but over there I will say if you cross the line your server is blocked out. I know you don`t like doing it but if you did once and let people know you did I bet 80% of the problem gets solved.

Thanks and Good Afternoon to you.

Sincerely,

fin4life

Hi armando, hope ur still here, thanks for all your hard work (sincere suck up)armando i second odin's question

do u think having rosario is better than not having him?

do u personally think that giving colombo and carey more playing time together will/is likely to result in them getting to an acceptable quality of play (average as opposed to turnstile)as ts seems to think

how often does an oline gel over time vs tinkering and will longs addition help the r o-line at all?

maybe because armando is right on and only one of the few who knows that henne is not going to lead the dolphins anywhere.

odinseye, ok so it was you. And no way, I wasn't talking about you. You're one of the few good ones in here.

Posted by: LouD | September 06, 2011 at 05:38 PM

Thank God! I have the same opinion of you. Though for awhile there, I didn't realize who you really were.

PS: I thought the new guy(LouD)was pretty good too-LOL!

Read that and laughed my a** off Armando. And I have never held back on my criticisms when I think you're being too harsh. This is definitely not one of those times. You can't even report the FACTS without making someone angry. I still laugh thinking about your post that one time.

"Daunte Culpepper, discuss".

And there was like 12 pages with some people accusing you of all kinds of Dolphins hate!

fin4life,

You're one of the good guys on here and I enjoy reading your post-game analysis. Not sure if you had a coaching background or played the game but you see things other guys don't see. Doesn't mean I agree with 100% of it but what you right is fresh and usually bang on.

I've had some of the same frustrations on here. Listen, all we want is for oour team to do well and for us all to be able to celebrate it together. Things don't always go the way we want as far as the team is concerned and sometimes our frustrations and emotions take over. When it gets reduced to name-calling and impersonating to try and make guys look bad, it's gone too far.

Should we consider the possibility that Miami can be a good team and still start out 1-3? Would close losses to the Pats, Texans, Bolts and a win against the Browns be horrible or probable? I could live with 2-2, as long as we get one home win. Thoughts?

Wolf, Id Hate to be Hennes blindside(Colombo,Carry), I heard even Lords of London wont insure Henne from afootball injury., The Talk about Henne being a bust or not will be over by week 4 IMHO, Those two(Clombo,Carey) will be why. Again IMHO

I'll always be NYS at heart odinseye!

fin4life,

"Omar Kelly does that in some instances is nothing more than small talk about what color of socks somebody put on or the team menu for lunch"

Team menu for lunch? Omar Kelly is our ALoco? Wow!

No way Fins bite on Garrard, way too expensive for Ross. As I said at the outset of camp, Ross is in penny pinching mode and Bush is this years big splash.
As for who did and didn't get cut, this regime has proven time and again how bad they are in evaluating talent. Sparano has the nails to go as far as admitting, in many cases that he cut a more talented guy because he wasn't here long enough or has been injured. Is he freaking serious. You pick the best 53. Period. If that means one extra LB or RB, then so be it. These guys are bush league at best. Ross isn't much better and cares way more about the bottom line than the team. Nobody can convince me differently. This is going to be a tenure of about another 5-7 years of mediocrity.

fins4ever,

There's probably a very real chance that we start the season 1-3. I'm not being negative, just realistic. I think on paper the Pats, Texans and Bolts are all better teams that us. Me fear is that this team goes 1-3 and starts to question themselves as they did last year and that the fans rip into Henne and the team. The team needs to stay together more this year and be mentally tougher. 2-2 after the first 4 weeks would not be the end of the world.

Odin, Ask Armando who faked you going Hunting on Morphine with your son .And have him Banned.

Mando,

You see the Dolphins going after Edds to the Practice Squad ?

Correct, the O-line will determine Henne's fate and therefore the Dolphins. Right now, Peter Falk has a better chance of protecting Henne as opposed to Marc Colombo. By the way, has Vernon Carey even put a hat on an opposing player in pre-season?

Your Good name has been sullied, If thats possible.LOL

I think Armando has gone again. I gotta go too....

Interesting that Joe and others aren't around. I think that tells you a lot right there.....

jrljr2, I have to disagree. This team has a core of very talented young players and a top 5 defense. A great TE and continuing development at the QB position are the top priorities. Finally solidifying the o-line and adding a quality big at RB are the last tweaks to take this team to a championship. They're not as far off IMO and if Sparano doesn't stay this year any coaching candidate will be psyched to get this team IMO.

Zeke, Jeff Ireland doesn't get asked questions that are tough or easy because he's not taken any. He doesn't make himself available.

And Tony ... well, he's not the guy making the call on signing a TE or not.
