Dolphins consulting with Eric Mangini

Remember last year when deposed Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini called team owner Stephen Ross to discuss I-don't-know-what?

Well, the Dolphins shoved that phone call under the proverbial rug as simply a coach reaching out to an owner because the two had an ongoing relationship rooted in Mangini's days with the New York Jets and Ross's residency in New York.

Well, the two are talking again.

Multiple sources are telling me Ross talks to Mangini on a fairly regular basis to get his opinion of the Dolphins. Apparently Mangini tells Ross what he thinks of various areas, including coaching. This is interesting considering Mangini is not ever around the team to find out what game plans are, what injury concerns the team is nursing and other factors critical to decisions made on and off the field.

Despite this relationship and the fact Ross obviously respects Mangini's opinion, I am told the former Jets and Browns coach is absolutely, positively NOT a candidate for the Dolphins coaching job either on an interim basis should Tony Sparano be relieved before the end of the season, or as a long-term option following the season should the Dolphins fail to overcome their 0-5 start.

Again, Eric Mangini is not a candidate to be the Dolphins head coach.

But he is regularly speaking with the Dolphins nonetheless.

#1.

Tell Ross not too...........Mangini has done nothing good in the NFL

Why are they doing it then? It makes no sense.

Oh wait, yes it does - it's how this idiot organization does everything.

Sparano is not the problem. QB is the problem. You switch the Dolphins and Cheatriots QBs and their records would be reversed.

Interesting....probably just food for thought. I don't see him being a candidate at any time for head coach either but maybe he comes in as DC or something when the new regime comes aboard. Doesn't hurt to have input from someone other than those involved with the team.

What "star" coach is going to agree to coach here knowing that the owner routinely goes behind his coach's back to seek advice from other coaches?

The Problems are

Coach
GM
Offensive coordinator
Defensive coordinator
Defensive Line
Linebackers
Secondary
QB's
Offensive Line
WR (Brandon Marshall)
Special teams

Wow we need to blow this up ASAP!

Mangina is responsible for recommending Daboll...who doesn't understand STILL that Bush up the middle is a stupid call (finally got lucky when he bounced ONE outside).

King Carl and Mangina: This is his brain trust? We are so screwed.

The problem is the Dolphins GM (Ireland). If Ross will fire that inept ba$tard the Dolphins will shine. Think KEVIN COLBERT or ERIC DECOSTA. The towle boy could coach this team to the playoffs with those two guys as potential GM's.

Maybe we need a couple a players to crash into Sparano on the sidelines and tear his MCL like Sean Peyton did.

Maybe that would rid us of this pathetic coach since Ross wants to sit on his ass with his fat cat buddies.

Well if you look at the current situation, Ireland always picks up ex Dallas players and trades with and gets info from I think the Chiefs if I'm not mistaken. So it's par for the course, but Mangini is not the person we need leading this team. I still think its Fisher, Cowher and Gruden in that order. Or Ross can continue to live with the status quo. I wonder how much the value of this franchise has decreased since Ross took over. The Dolphins were once one of the most valuable teams in this league.

I'm tellin' ya what. Next season will be my 40th as a Dolphins fan.

If Ross screws up this off-season and hires and drafts the wrong players, I'm done. FOR GOOD.
I won't be a fan of an another team, I'll just find something else to do on Sundays. There's no other team out there that I care about. The Dolphins obviously don't give a shiite. So why should I?

Message to Mr. Ross: This is it, fella. This is the most important off-season in franchise history. In the history of this billion-dollar investment you own. DON'T SCREW IT UP!

Bye Josephus. I'm sure you'll be missed. Not.

Wow over on Cotes Dolfan Satisfaction survey almost 90 percent say they are VERY dissatisfied with the Dolphin. That should speak volumes about this organization.

Keeping our current coach is a great move. It means that we will continue to lose and have a better shot at drafting Andrew Luck. The only problem is that our organization has such bad luck, Andrew Luck would probably return to school next year and we still won't get him :(.

Armando any word on us trading some players for some draft picks today?

@Mike | October 18, 2011 at 01:31 PM

You say it's not the coaching? AND you bring up the Patriots?

Tell me, how did Cassel do in place of Brady when he got injured? How has Cassel done since then?

Henne is a better QB than the coaching allows (not great).

"ongoing relationship rooted in Mangini's days with the New York Jets and Ross's residency in New York?"

Has Ross ever spoken to Shula? Too embarrassed?

No wonder we suck!

As if it couldn't get any worse or funnier, news breaks that our owner talks to Eric Mangini on a regular basis.

You can't make this stuff up!

I agree that Henne is a better QB than he is given credit for, but I don't think he is our long term answer. We need an elite QB that has "it". Don't get me wrong I like Henne and was pulling for him, but sometimes we just have to see it for what it is and Henne is a very good backup or a slightly below average starter.

Mangini is a clown

@Cory Van Driessche | October 18, 2011 at 02:10 PM

I totally agree. Like falling in love, things have to fall in the right place and the right time. I think Henne could have had "it", but he doesn't now. This coaching staff will not help any young QB get it, and this regime does not seem to care at all about the fans.

Gruden, Cowher, Fisher - status quo. Not the answer.

Again, the Dolphins need a fresh, young perspective in the game to compliment the upcoming talent pool they will have access to after this season. I want to re-fan them, but this tyranny of small ideas is killing me.

Ross is an IDIOT. After the fiasco with Harbough last year, now he is at it again asking the opinion of a twice fired NFL coach. What the Dolphins need most of all is a NEW OWNER!!!!!

Mangini??? Didn't the guy ruined the Jets and the Browns? Is Ross that dumb?

Could it be possible that Ross is a Jets fans and has been plotting the demise of the Dolphins all along?

Now that would be funny!

What about sending Merling to Philly for Asante Samuel. It looks like Philly does not want draft picks but d-line help

Bring in the CHIN! (Cohwer)

The story keeps getting better. Peterson and now Mangini. Who is really running this team? The team looked like it gave up last night. And the 4th and 1/2 yard punt in the first quarter. A real man goes for it. A field general goes for it. A play it safe, don't run with scissors guy who doesn't believe in his team doesn't go for it. If he doesn't believe in them, they don't believe in him.

And it is no wonder Ross is talking to Mangini. He didn't know his team was run by the Dallas Cheerleaders.

Just step aside Sparano. And Ireland you need to go as well.

well if anyone actually needs a laugh, and a really good one, this my fellow fans has to get at least a grin

http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/2011/10/miami_dolphins_the_suckiest_bu.php

Ross was only speaking to Mangini, to how he can get away with taping other teams practices.

In all serousness Mangini is a weasel.

I like the idea of Merling for Samuel but it wont happen because Ireland is an idiot.

Mike Mayock for GM!

Is this kinda like I. Thomas with the Knicks????? LOL

Philly wants D-line help...........so forget the Merling trade......

COWHER AND FISHER ARE THE ANSWER

BOTH HAVE RESPECTED EVALUATIONS WHEN IT COMES TO THE DRAFT. THEY CAN REBUILD THIS TEAM AND THEY'RE BOTH DEFENSIVE MINDED COACHES SPRINKLED WITH A RESPECTABLE OFFENSIVE MINDSET.

NO OTHER COACHES SHOULD BE CONSIDERED, THERE AREN'T ANY BETTER ONES OUT THERE THAT CAN RESURRECT THIS TEAM IN THE SHORTEST AMOUNT OF TIME AND KEEP IT AMONG THE TOP AS A LONG TERM GOAL.

And this is being leaked to the press... why?

Someone is trying to blow something up from the inside.

Why would the Eagles trade a Pro Bowl football player for a guy who probably has a better shot at being a Professional Bowler.

COWHER and LUCK 2012!!!!!!!

Ireland is probably leaking this info because he wants to create a fan base that would prefer him over any Mangini influence...

Just kick Sparano and Ireland out, we can lose without them there...so what's the difference?

Philly wants D-line help...........so forget the Merling trade......Posted by: Ohio Dolfan

Now that's funny!!!

I find it interesting that Mangini's name surfaced in Philly that Andy Reid supposedly was getting input from him as a defensive consultant...

I THINK MANGINI IS PASSING THESE RUMORS TO MAKE HIM LOOK RELEVANT...

NOT BUYING IT

I'm starting to think that Crowder's sentiments about Ireland may have been wide ranging in the locker room.

You know, Sparano was powerless coming into the season. Everyone knew it when Ross tried to lure hrbaugh, including the players.

As much as you hate to think it's true, this team may be bombing because they realize they aren't going anywhere with the people currently in place.

I feel very conpiracy theorist today LOL

Getting a sick feeling!! Ive suspected this

Don't think it's that big of a deal. Ross isn't a football mind, and is a new Owner, so I'm sure he's trying to figure out what he needs to know from people he's friendly with.

Mangini is NOT coaching this team (nor is Peterson). Ross is NOT dictating to Ireland/Sparano (otherwise, why keep the conservative approach to everything). This is simply an Owner getting info from outside the "bubble."

I don't really see anything wrong with that. As long as he makes the right decision when the Season's over (and if Mando's right, Mangini plays no role in the future of this team).

I haven't heard anyone mention it but if you want a good laugh, or cry depending on your state of mind, go back and watch Kevin Burnett on the Jets last scoring play. He will come in from the right side toward the end of the play. WTF was that?

hahahahaha

The question today should be: Why is Brandon Marshall still on this team?. Five droped TD passes, countless other drops and one play that will go down in Dolphin History. Running out of bounds when no one is around you and the goal line in sight.

The Fins appear to have an owner almost as bad as the Cowboys and I don't want that to occur. Since I live in the Dallas area I want the cows to have the WORST OWNER in FB, I don't want to share that claim with any other team. Jaharry Jones has worked very hard for this title since he ran Jimmy Johnson off and he deserves to keep his title.

--- ATTENTION ---

Mr. Ross

when rebuilding your team, you need to keep ONE word in the forefront of all your decisions, and that word is: * RELIABLE *

when you absolutely need to be somewhere you RELY on dependable transportation, weather that means getting a tune-up or buying a new car, the BOTTOM LINE is you have SECURED, to the best of your ability, a RELIABLE mode of transportation. if the people in charge of decisions at the fukashiema power plant had SECURED a RELIABLE back-up cooling system, the world would be better off for it. you need to win to have a successful organization, that is your goal, so you need to RELY on RELIABLE players to attain that goal. your team, right now, is currently suffering from a plethra of foolish decisions that saw miami jettison it's reliable players in favor of UNRELIABLE players. the RELIABLE players should have been retained and built around. to be successful, it is so hard to find these types of players, that once you find one it is a must to SECURE them. myself, i would take CAMARILLO over marshall any day of the week, and if you say fans wanted a big time reciever, that is true, but marshall should have been IN ADDITION to camarillo(to build around/or enhance), i would also have kept LOUSAKA POLITE, these TWO players by themselves define the word "RELIABLE", and if used in combination, the results would be RELIABLE as well. tell me you don't cringe is short yardage situations, now that lou is gone. brady is great but, he has RELIABLE targets in welker, hernandez..it is a MUST to have at least two RELIABLE recievers on the field at the same time for the simple fact that one reliable reciever(by himself) can easily be doulbled and taken out of the game. your team doesn't even have ONE reliable piece in place, can't rely on a manning like QB, can't depend on your big offseason aquisition(bush), can't rely on drop the ball heartline, can't rely on third and short...you need a first down and there is NO dependable, RELIABLE player on the team. kraft relies on belicheat, who relies on brady, who relies on welker, hernendez....

the word is -- RELIABLE --

if you must win, you MUST secure RELIABLE people.

@James L

"Tell me, how did Cassel do in place of Brady when he got injured? How has Cassel done since then?"

That's simple. Not only did the Cheatriots have the easiest schedule in the NFL that season, they had the easiest schedule in NFL history. Yes, Cassell had the easiest schedule anyone who's ever played in the NFL had.

How are the Colts doing without Peyton Manning? Did their coach suddenly just turn into a complete moron or is the QB position that important in the NFL? Did Caldwell win his first 13 games in the NFL because he's such a great coach or because he's got a HOF QB?

I understand Brandon Marshall has a lot of drops especially for TD. I dont understand the notion of getting rid of him. And make Hartline your number 1? and Bess your number 2? These guys cant even get open! If we can get a second round pick I understand trading him but were not going too.

Yea he has a bunch of drops but guess what he still our best receiver. Is there any doubt in this?

Mangini the goat. Nice.

Marshall is our only playmaker, and these jackasses want to get rid of him....
Wow, we did NOTHING to try and get Carson Palmer and now he's a raider. Ross says he wants a franchise qb, but everyone is doing
Something at this deadline and we r doing NOTHING.

Sour for Cowher!

Mando, why won't Tony just quit? He has to know by now his dumbarse will be fired in 3 months, 12 days, 18 hours, 58 minutes and 22 seconds.

DKM,

Agreed. Dolphins don't normally have receivers that go over 100 yards in one game. We need to keep him and let it play out for now.

Unless the right price is offered.

Marshall sucks.

Anyone who doesn't think a qb makes all the difference in the world, cam Newton. Carolina is night and day because of one player. They can beat anyone on any given Sunday now.

Wow I have to say again all this Marshall bashing is a joke. He put up great numbers against the best shutdown corner, but it's not enough for u guys, it's not enough hartline had as many drops and 0 catches, or that fasano had no catches, or that bess had as Many catches as fumbles.....
No wonder they never listen to the fans..u guys are idiots, pure and simple, and I wouldn't pay attention to a word u say either. Annoying little dipshits.

I laugh when I see that all our troubles last year was Henne.

This year its Marshall...

You know the one consistent thing this team has done since Sparano and Ireland have been here?

LOSE

Since they abandoned the short lived WILDCAT, and went to a conventional offense, they have done NOTHING BUT LOSE.

No matter the QB, no matter the WR, no matter the RBs...

So get off the players already, Sparano and Ireland are the common denominators in this losing...

I think Sparano should give up the reigns and become a kicking coach for someone, he sure gets excited when they hit those FG's...a real motivator he would be!

Mark, as always, ur an idiot.
Ohio dolfan, I'm one too lol
And what do u want for Marshall? Draft picks? Because we draft so well huh.
Again, look at what all of
Our receivers that aren't named Marshall did last night COMBINED. YOU ALL ARE MORONS!
