Dolphins not a total mess on some decisions

We are all quick to point out when the Dolphins get things wrong. Let me take this opportunity to point out a couple they got right:

David Garrard.

Kyle Orton (sort of).

As you know, the Dolphins talked to David Garrard for two days when they learned starting QB Chad Henne would be out for the remainder of the season. The Dolphins wanted Garrard. But Garrard wanted a guaranteed amount of money the team wasn't willing to offer.

I reported Garrard talked with Jeff Ireland and the Miami GM came away lacking a good feeling about Garrard's desire to play for Miami. So the Dolphins did not sign the player who seemed the best available QB on the market.

Turns out that was the right call. Today while the Raiders were chasing Garrard with thoughts of signing him to replace injured Jason Campbell, Foxsports.com reported Garrard was told this morning he has a bulging disc that will require surgery.

The injury had been bothering him for some time but Garrard apparently got final word on the issue today. So while I would not rip Garrard for not telling the Dolphins of his injury, I would applaud Tony Sparano and Jeff Ireland for backing away from Garrard. Of course, even if they had not, I assume Miami's doctors would have picked up Garrard's injury in the physical.

Glad it didn't come to that.

As you well know, the Dolphins also didn't add Kyle Orton in the summer. I reported in my column today that Orton is not a Dolphins player today because Stephen Ross himself ordered Ireland to back away from the idea of signing Orton.

A source tells me the Dolphins were going to extend Orton's deal two years at $9 million a year in addition to paying him his base salary this year. But that, plus the second-round pick asking price in trade, convinced Ross to tell Ireland to get away from that deal because he was told by the Dolphins personnel dept. that Orton is not a franchise QB.

Now, I do not applaud an owner making football decisions. I also cannot applaud the Dolphins allowing Chad Henne to come into training camp and, indeed into this season, with absolutely zero competition for his starting QB spot. They should have drafted someone.

But backing away from Orton? He's having a bad season. He's lost his starting job. It seems the Dolphins got that one right.

ARMANDO:

COME SAY HI TO ME.

WE CAN HAVE A BEER TOGETHER.

BRING ROSS IF YOU CAN.

SECTION 320

Armando, weather Henne came into camp with some competition or not, he has looked decent and the Dolphins being winless is not on Chad. Take a look at Sparano, he has been beaten in the game planning. The personnel moves in the second and third round drafts have left the Miami Dolphins without the talent needed. Not using Bush correctly is just stupid and not putting the kind of speeed that Gates has out there is also dumb. Take a look at Ted Ginn, he is productive in SanFrancisco and so are many players who this regime dumps. The personnel decisions are to many to ignore. I'm not sure that Ross making some decisions is so bad. How can he do much worse than Parcells. It's going to happen next season. If Ireland wants to keep his job he will have to give up control. Ross did not spend 1.1 billion dollars to listen to people, especially when those in power made some horrible choices.

It's not Henne's fault that even with a new OC, new weapons, new scheme, and he still sucks in the red zone.

It's not Henne's fault that his 3rd down stats are still horrendous.

It's not Henne's fault that his 4th quarter stats are still horrible.

It's not Henne's fault that we are 1-12 at home.

It's not Henne's fault we have the leagues longest running losing streak.

OH I WOULD HAVE A MARINO JERSEY ON.

I WOULD THINK THEY HAVE TO RESPECT DAN.

DOLPHINS HAT AND TOWEL.

I'M OK WITH LOSING EVERY GAME NOW, BUT WE MUST WIN THIS ONE.

MY BAD SECTION 306 ROW 22.

IT WOULD BE GREAT IF YOU CAME AND GOT ONE OF YOUR BLOGGERS AND BROUGHT ME AND MY NEW WIFE TO THE WARM COZY BOX WITH YOU.

HINT.

HINT.

NAH FORGET HER SHE'S A DIE HARD JETS FAN.

Armando, your point does not make sense. Garrard did not want to play for an 0-4 team and that is the only reason why Dolphins didnt get him. not because of any FO or coaching insight.

"Yeah, I noticed the bulging disc right from da start. I looked at him and thought he was a hunchback. I said, hey, we don't want a guy with a hump in his back playing quarterback for us do we? So, we passed on dat one dere."

Again back to this 'the Dolphins should have drafted somebody' argument. Who is they should have drafted becaue the only guys that have looked halfway decent are Newton (who was not available) and Dalton. You can make a case for Dalton but we would have friend these guys for taking Dalton at 15. I think it's fair to say if they get one of the big three QBs in THIS year's draft, then they were RIGHT not to draft a QB in a poorer draft class. Again, you would read anyone on here saying that Jeff Ireland was right in this decision but I'm saying it.

Coaching insight? Are you kidding me? These guys don't even know when it's time for them to have a bowel movement.

Tony Sparano and Jeff Ireland were hired by Bill Parcells because he lost a bet with Jerry Jones. That's it! Nothing else.

Hell...put Ross in charge!

The bet was Bill Parcells couldn't eat ten Saltines in one minute. He was only able to eat four before his mouth dried up.

Hellfire! That's the best dang thing i heard yet. Put Ross in charge.

If they were to sign Garrard and this injury showed up wouldn't the team have some recourse where his salary was concerned. They usually do a physical on players but do they take x-rays of everything? I wonder if "concealing an injury" is grounds for termination of a contract.

U mind telling me why we didn't go after Brandon Lloyd? This is ridiculous. We aren't just missing a qb here...we are missing playmakers. And at 1.4 million he is an absolute steal! I hate Ireland and sparano for the hundredth time, and am starting
To dislike Ross.

Well, at least one of the other 0for teams got some help. If anything, maybe it puts Miami in a better draft position if he helps the Rams win some games. A little consolation.

Look, we suck at drafting, so does anybody really think we will draft an answer?
Ohh and there will be four star qbs this draft. They have it wrong. Luck, rg3, Landry jones, and russell wilson (4 year starter)

Lol and this article proves that sparano and Ireland are idiots. Even Ross knew to stay away from Orton.
I used to say we had no chance of getting luck, but I was so wrong. The colts will win games, they've lost all of their games by a td or less basically.

We have good players...need a coach !!!

Garrard is a real piece of work. No wonder he was@itching about GUARANTEED MONEY. I guess he didn't know he had a bulging disc. I take that back, considering he was stupid enough to think he would get it past the physical. Good, we have to many morons on this team - like Brandon Marshall!

Knowing the fins drafting problems, of all the QBs drafted, they will pick the only one that fizzles out or wont even bother picking a QB at all...

I was watching the Dallas Pats game last night and seeing Dez Bryant on the sidelines making big plays and yelling at his team to get fired up for the 4th quater made me think of how badly the Fins suck at drafting. He fell in the draft enough that we had 2 chances to get him... So, are Jared Odrick or Koa Misi more of an impact player than Dez?

I say no, and the fins suck at drafting.

"With the first pick in the 2012 draft, the Miami Dolphins take Jonathan Martin, OT, from Stanford".

Why not??? it was a safe pick with Jake Long. Why risk this pick on a QB.

our team doctors would have missed garrads bulging disc and gave a green light. elway killed the orton deal, not ross. dolphins were still nibbling and offered a fourth;broncos remained firm at a 3rd. thats what i read at that time.

The Fins are soooo, soooo, bad this season!
