The Dolphins secondary? Terrible so far

How is it the Buffalo Bills are 4-1 and the Dolphins are 0-4 when, looking at each teams' roster, it is nearly impossible to discern that the guys from Western New York have any more talent than those from South Florida?

Well, aside from the fact the Bills have properly identified which is the A-back (Fred Jackson) and which is the B-back (C.J. Spiller) while the Dolphins have not, while the Bills are maximizing the talent in their undervalued receiver corps and the Dolphins aren't, while the Bills are getting good quarterback play and the Dolphins have not, the biggest difference is found in the secondary.

Buffalo's secondary and the rest of the defense does great work turning the ball over via interceptions. And the Dolphins stink in that category. Neither team is exceedingly effective stopping the pass. The Dolphins are 31st in the NFL in that category and the Bills are 26th.

But throw the ball against Miami and you move the ball. Throw the ball against Buffalo and you might move the ball and then again you might have the ball intercepted.

I'm not exaggerating and to prove the point simply consider this:

The Bills on Sunday intercepted Michael Vick four times. That one-game total is twice as many interceptions as what the Dolphins have all season long so far.

And the Bills have done it twice!

They have two games in which they intercepted the opposing quarterback four times. The other game came against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

So twice this season the Bills have come up with twice as many interceptions in one game as the Dolphins have come up with in four games.

Terrible.

The Bills have 12 interceptions on the season. The Dolphins have two.

Terrible.

No starter in the Miami secondary has an interception this year. Miami's two interceptions came from defensive end Jared Odrick and dime cornerback Jimmy Wilson -- a rookie. Indeed, Wilson is a rookie picked in the seventh round.

What does that say about Sean Smith and Vontae Davis and Reshad Jones and Yeremiah Bell?

Terrible.

What does this say about the group?: New England defensive lineman Vince Wilfork has as many interceptions (2) as the Dolphins do. He has more interceptions than any member of the Miami secondary.

Terrible.

Then there's this: There are 10 individuals in the NFL so far this season who have more interceptions than the Dolphins do as a team.

Terrible.

It used to be frustrating when Miami players had potential interceptions bound off their hands and fall incomplete. Those are the good old days. Nowadays, Dolphins players, particularly those in the secondary don't get nearly close enough to have the football hit their hands. That partially explains why Miami gives up an average of 307 yards per game passing, which if it continues, would be an all-time franchise worst mark.

In fact, the Dolphins have yielded 1,128 passing yards in four games. They're on pace to give up 4,912 passing yards for the season. That would shatter the old worst mark of 3,794 passing yards allowed in a season by 1,118 yards.

Terrible.

Surprised? You should not be. We should have seen this coming and definitely the Dolphins should have seen this coming because last year the club was horrible in the pass interception dept. Last season, the Dolphins had 11 picks all freakin' year long!

And that has been something of a theme during the current Dolphins administration. In 2008, the first year Bill Parcells-Jeff Ireland-Tony Sparano were in charge, the Dolphins set the franchise record for fewest interceptions in one year. They had only 8 all season long. Glad to see the addressed the issue over the years.

Terrible.

.......don't let "Football Expert because I watch it on TV" bother you.

It was obvious you were just messing around to make the blog fun. It seemed as if he was just waiting with baited breath to attack someone, lol.

By the way......I'll be Miami's Cheerleading Coach......I'd get a raise EVERY DAY doing that job :) :)

well we all saw the report and now know that carl peterson and gruden if he wants it take over after season. gruden could do wonders with luck. colts are starting to scare me, they could go 0-16. we have to keep losing and the denver game at home scares me a little. hopefully tebowgarbage will beat the fins.

Odin...Can I be the offensive coordinator? I pretend to know everything about offensive football on a daily basis..I should fit in fine in Miami

Ohio, if I get the Head Coaching job, I'll put in a good word for you.

The Cheerleader Coach is a very important position in my staff and I'll be bringing one(or TWO!)in with me.

However, if your a quick learner, we do have a spot OPEN for a Bikini Waxer?

The pay ain't so great, but the benefits speak for themselves!!!!

Well prob go 4 and 12 with us as coaches! Sparano and Co prob 2 and 15!

2 and 14!

Sounds good Odin....somethings gotta put a smile on our face.....

and we all the know the play on the field isn't right now

Tony might say whatever he wants, but, at this point in Time, he has to back it up in results for me to believe him.

DKM

you could say we went will go 2-15.........just means the bye week even figured out a way to beat us :)

tony already knows hes gone. lets hope gruden can turn this thing around next year, with that offer that ross is making to him he better. cowher was my first choice but ill settle for luck and gruden. go colts, get a win!

If Vontae shows up for the Jets game, I'm sure ESPN and Revis will have a field day with his preseason assessment. Quick, pull another hammie to save face, Vontae!

Guys I think..

Football Expert Because I Watch It On TV = Jeff Ireland

He's secretly reading these blogs and gets pissed when the fans say thay can do a better coaching job.

Pro Football Focus ranks CB sean smith

Darryl,

You've shown a lot of improvement and seem to have no problems adjusting to the talent around you.

Get your guys together, re-write that DAMN Fight Song and you've got yourself a job.

(PS: Make you sure you include the Demo with your Resume ;)

Man, does it su-k for me to wait until next year. What is this, a surrender, they are laying down? I WANT A WIN!!! NOW!

Sena Smith with the one handed interceoption against the New Orleans Saints in the PRESEASON!

LMFAO!

How many here would actually be upset if we win a game? It's an upside down world we live in now. Sparano's caught in a catch 22: darn if he do (win) and darn if he don't.

ROTFLMAO! Soiled Bottoms would be PROUD!!!!

Random thought who had better hands?

OJ McDuffie or Orande Gadsen or Brandon Marshall

I say McDuffie edges Orande.

(Dont ask why I put Marshall in there)

DKM, I want to be QB coach please. :)

I study tape and have been part of a scouting team that was outsourced by certain coordinators in the NFL. :)

I wonder if that would qualify me in that clown attacking you for as maybe legit?

...Odin. I think the oppropriate fight song would be the Tighten Up by Archie Bell and the Drells..I'll work on some new lyrics for you coach, and some plays to get some of the speed on our team in space.

I agree with those who think Indy should be the odds on favorite for the first pick. Given that Manning doesn't come back of course. They had no business losing that game Sunday but their defense, which is supposed to be the strength of the team right now, couldn't make a stop. Freeney and Mathis were invisible once they got a nice lead.

Go Dolphins being in the 2015 Super Bowl which is being held about five miles from my house!

Poizen,

I was just kidding at first but that clown took it personal, but that's why I figured it was Jeff Ireland or maybe Tony Sparano.

Spiderman,

McDuffie had the best hands, he was Marino main man on 3rd downs!

oscar canosa,

I'm disappointed in your Sparano comment. You and I both know if we have patience and let him tinker and we give Ireland time to pick up some more acorns, in time, we can develop the acorns and ex-Cowboys into a team that could be a contender (given more tinkering and development time).

In the meantime, just thinking about all of this makes me want to go take a big tinker!

Cosmodo..You are right. My thoughts about our team can be considred treasonous. I realize this. I would be genuinley pysched if we went on to win some games. But I think that we are at a crossroads as an orginization, and maybe Luck is the forbidden fruit. If we do end up with the number one pick there is no guarantee that he will change the fortunes of the franchise like most of us(including myself) believe he will. So in reality we need to play out the season, try and win ans let the card lay as they will

As for Sparano. He is doomed no matter what. You are right, he is in a no win situation. Some of this is not his fault as he has been put in a tough sitaution. But in the end the shortcomings of this team fall on his shoulders. This comes with the territory of being the head coach.

crickets.........

Miami Dolphins.

Terrible.

Miami.

Terrible.

Miami fans.

Terrible.

LMFAO.

Not cool TDF

I CALL BS!

MIAMI Fans...

the true ones.

the best in the league. We have stuck with this mess for the last 10 years, and still are here supporting the teal and orange.

So a big FU to TDF! JMO.

Miami has become a pro sports destination city kind of like Orlando but there are actually 4 teams here. The stadiums/arenas are all 1/2 empty and full of tourists. Fans don't even show up for Heat games until after the 2nd Q. Cheers from the oppositions fans are often louder than the home crowd. Its pathetic and Dolphin fans fall in this category. This isn't the first city to have a bunch of lousy sports teams and it's not the first to have a bunch of lousy fans. Just the way it is.

TDF, so then be clear on the fair weather fans. But there are many Dolphin fans that are as passionate as Steeler fans. There may not be as big of a number of them in Miami, but I can tell you I know they exist in plenty.

dusty, what report (about Gruden/Peterson)? Can you post a link?

Because we have other things to do besides sporting events, sorry if were not a dump like Cleveland (no offense)

Pro Football Focus only counted 3 TDs against CB Mr. Smith this season so far

When in fact it was 4 TDs and countless others Mr. Smith was "partially responsible for
TE Hernandez
TE Gronkowski
WR Josh Cribbs
WR Vincent Jackson (108 YDs receiving in 1 quarter)

all scored OVER sean smith

If they counted both Patriots TDs over Smith
Believe Smith would have been tied for last place in the NFL among starting CB

Lets not 4get Mr. Smith running into our own Jimmy Wilson who was in perfect position for his 2nd interception as a rookie (more than Mr. Smith in 3 yrs) until Smith knocked Wilson over and dropped another ball. Another Bone Head CB Smith play (Stat wise, Smith got credit for a PD, WTF ? ROTFALMAO) Dolphin lose

What is this, stillhard, sarcasm? There is no place for that here at this Time!

Look, I'm not sold on gruden if this is true.

But I am sold on his PASSION TO WIN THE GAME. and that is what Miami is missing.

the bad news people for some of you. If Gruden gets a job here, Chad Henne returns. I can almost promise that. He will still draft a QB or Luck if he is there. But Henne will be a phin. that would be the only coach that keeps him.

Dusty where is this news?

Maybe this?
http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22475988/32601277

.... and the Miami Dolphins seem more interested in marketing to the "fair weather fan" with their orange carpets, celebrity owners, fins up, new fights songs, in standium clubs, scratch and sniff bush signings etc. Problem is, these fans are the first to go when times are tough because no one likes a loser. Maybe they could fill the stadium if the stayed focused on football ... I don't know though. All I see are empty seats ... in all four teams arenas.

Haven't been to a game yet this year, but was at both games late last December (Buff and Detroit). It was pathetic. Empty seats everywhere ... I don't want to exagerate but probably close to 10,000 fans from out of state. Then there was the dolphins playing "don't stop believing" after Detroit beat Miami (which is a classic Detroit sports song). Just a disgusting experience if you cheer for the Dolphins ... the guys beside us were from Detroit and couldn't believe it. We all had a good laugh at least.

or this?

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/885671-miami-dolphins-rumors-is-jon-gruden-a-fit-for-the-fins-as-head-coach

Poizen, I would rather Andy Reid than Gruden. Here's what people will say against him, "he's never won the big game."

AND!!! We can't even sniff the big game's arse. Haven't even gone as guests. It would be nice to get NEAR the big game for once. Andy Reid has ONE losing season in 13 years. That's a pretty good record.

Besides, under Reid we'd definitely have a Top 5 offense, for a long time to come. Defense would be tricky, but hopefully he'll have learned from his Philly days, plus Miami has historically had better defenses than offenses, so hopefully some of that would carry over.

But Reid is a winner. He has a winning, AGGRESSIVE offensive scheme that's proven to win in the NFL (imagine Luck running his offense), and he might even keep Henne around (which would satsify your needs too)!!!

Win/Win. You with me Poizen?

I've been a die hard Phins fan since I was 5.......got the pictures to prove it.

Want a turn around so bad!

Poizen, thanks for the links. Not sure why they're even contemplating (if the report is accurate) replacing Sparano mid-season. The damage is done, we're out of the Playoffs. No reason to start with a new HC now. Let Sparano embarrass himself, his team and us all Season, and kick him to the curb Jan. 1 @ 4pm. THEN hire the new HC.

Gruden will run the "Miami Spread"

The spread offense which Gruden has been studying openly for 3 yrs now

Green Bay WON the SB last yr using the "Spread"

Dolphins should line up 4 WRs or 5 WRs and play to our strengths

Hartline Marshall & Bess (Wallace) Gates

w Bush or Thomas in the backfield for screen or draw

Henne would be in the gun

and we could go no huddle if desired

GO PHINS!

If the Dolphins can produce some winning seasons the stadium would be packed and rocking but we've been garbage for 10 years what do you expect.

I have a friend who just left the CIA I was talking to this past weekend. He had in his office an old waterboarding machine (tool, whatever it's called). I asked if he had ever tested it out. He said no. I said I had been tortured before. He said really, were you waterboarded?

I said, "no, I've been forced to watch the Dolphins the past 4 weeks!"

Da-thum-dum....

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week.

lol @ DC Dolfan

Sad but true: Gibril Wilson is the best FS the Trifecta has fielded for Miami.

(Clemons: 15 starts and 0 plays in 2010, the guy is always miles away in deep coverage)
(Jones: has been tackling hot air so far; only Sean Smith is a worst tackler in this unit)

Wouldn't Gruden have signed a contract with ESPN telling them he would be there the entire year?

I'm not sure how that works, but I would imagine that is how it goes correct?

DD, your thoughts are not treasonous. There is a cancer growing in this franchise. We have to nuke it - even if it disfigures us temporarily. Nothing to be ashamed about it. It's just a bitter pill to swallow.

I'm one of the Suck-for-Lucker (sounds bad). Whether by intention or natural inabilities, it doesn't matter to me. Strategically it's better to swallow our pride and lose some meaningless games in order to win the war (Luck). And they are meaningless games because there's no shot of us going to the playoffs. It's just so, so sad that we proud Dolfans have reached this low - to want to finish last and pin our hopes on someone who hasn't even thrown a pro ball yet.

But we all know this guy is for real and is less questionable than even when Marino got drafted. There is no guarantee with Luck, but we blew it with Matt Ryan and Drew Brees. The stars are aligning in our favor: A Luck, a Manning, a Marino only comes once approx. every 10 years and we are sucking at an opportune time. Why not try something more sure for once?

DC, lets get one thing straight. I do not care if Henne is here or not. As far as I am concerned he is good as gone. I am not a "Henne" fan, I am a dolhin fan and am a fan of players who work hard to get better and show progress. Henne did that on my dolphin team, so I support him

I do also believe he will be a top 10 QB somewhere, probably not here, but he has to not get buried behind a young sure fire starter.

I would not mind andy reid at all. He has a good resume in one of the toughest towns to be a coach for football. I just think his time may be over, he has a lot of family issues that I think will keep him from football for a while if he leaves Philly.

Like I asaid, I am not sold on Gruden and his resume. but I am sold on his passuion to make Miami a winner, and that is what we need. someone thinking like a fan that is coaching. someone who will go in the locker room like you or I would and tell the players how it is.

What I would give to get in front of the phin players before a game and give them a fans perspective of the abuse we take because of them. Ha!

Sparano on how the Season could turn out:

“The team that we’re playing right now this week, you know, they’re one of the few teams in the league that went to an AFC Championship game after losing three games in a row two times in a season. So they go through the season and they go through a string where they lose three in a row, and the sky isn’t falling. I mean, they end up winning some games and end up getting back there and they lose three in a row and they end up getting back there again and they end up in the championship game."

Is this guy serious? Tell me Tony, did the Jets do it with a backup QB? Or the worst defense in the NFL? How about one of the worst olines in the NFL? Did they do it with a 1-12 home record? Did they do it with 2 preceding 7-9 Seasons?

That's what I'm talking about. Stop comparing apples to oranges. The Jets were in a TOTALLY different place when they did that. They weren't the laughingstock of the NFL. Oh yeah, one HUGE thing Tony left out, the Jets didn't lose their FIRST THREE games. Kinda makes a difference. Being 4-2, and then 4-5 (or whatever they were) isn't really that bad. But being 0-4, yeah, that's pretty much when you throw in the towel. JERKOFF!

If it is true they are planning to replace TS in mid-aeason, there are a lot of variables involved. Besides the obvious, that we are not going anywhere with Tony, this new Coach coming in would be not knowing the Players or whatever of a System is left in here. That's almost as bad for this Season as if Tony remains here. But, it would be a Change and a necessary one for, at least, Us Fans. For now.

Sparano should remove the Dolphin emblem form the helmets and replace it w a big LEMON

dr. roberts, i had a very sililar post earlier.

and I agree with beating the Jets twice.

Dr Roberts, I am not sure anyone is thinking Gruden is coming mid year. There is no way of that happening.

But firing Sporano now would be a great sign our Owner "gets it" and will not take failure at all anymore.

Who cares who in term coach is. Let it be the f'n ball boy, he can't be worse.

Sparano should remove the Dolphin emblem form the helmets and replace it w a big LEMON

Or what about slapping the Dolphins logo on the Packers helmet? The Packers are what the Parcellians dream about. A tough, smart, disciplined team with a bunch of work horses and stallions and no prima-donnas. Man, Parcells and company missed the boat big time.
