Dolphins close to being good? No way!

I never played in the NFL and made the Pro Bowl six times for playing offensive line like Dan Dierdorf did. And I am not a billionaire and the owner of the Miami Dolphins as Stephen Ross is.

So when both made the point Sunday that the 0-7 Dolphins aren't really that bad relatively speaking I had to do a self-check because I really, truly do not agree them.

Dierdorf, a color man who called the game for CBS Sunday, made the point during the game that the Dolphins are really not that bad. And to illustrate the point he said the St. Louis Rams, for example, are not nearly as good as Miami.

Of course, I disagree. And while Dierdorf is an expert and I'm a nobody, I know facts. And the fact is Dierdorf, a St. Louis resident, made this comment on a day the Dolphins dropped to 0-7 and the Rams beat the ever-living-snot out of the New Orleans Saints for three quarters before holding on to a 31-21 victory.

And the Rams did this with A.J. Feeley as their starter.

So there's that.

Ross, as I tell you in my column in today's Miami Herald, has big plans for the Dolphins for next year. Please read my column. During our conversation Sunday he mentioned that he doesn't think the Dolphins are that far from being a good team.

"Parcells said you are what your record says you are," Ross said. "But certainly we're a much better team than our record says it says. Last week, I was looking at some power ratings and we were No. 25. So I don't think we're No. 31 or 32 ... Everybody's always says we have a much better team than our record says it is. We're not that far away."

I've heard this for so long, I no longer believe it as a matter of policy and certainly don't believe it of the 2011 Dolphins. With respect to Dierdorf and Ross, you are wrong.

The Dolphins suck.

I'm not saying the cupboard is bare and the team is completely lacking talent.

But I am saying the Dolphins are not close.

They are, indeed, what their record says they are and that's one of only two winless teams in the league. The Dolphins are not, I repeat, not just the acquisition of one franchise rookie quarterback away from being a playoff team.

They need more than that. Much more. Consider:

Miami's secondary is incapable of producing interceptions which is bad because they also cannot cover well with any consistency. That's not my opinion. That is a fact. It has been a fact for some time now. That's because the Dolphins need a playmaking free safety and they need help at cornerback -- probably a starter.

One of the problems the Dolphins have in the back end is the front end. They do not get enough pressure on the quarterback. I would tell you that issue is primarily a result of Miami's outside linebacker play. Cameron Wake is good but he hasn't been as good as last year. And Wake is getting no help from the off side.

Jason Taylor isn't getting to the quarterback. He's also not get a lot of pressurewhich is just as important as sacks. The only reason the 37-year-old pass rusher's problems is an issue is because second-year linebacker Koa Misi is not doing it either.

The Dolphins need OLB help to improve the pass rush.

Not finished.

The team needs help on offense -- besides quarterback, that is.

This team lacks a consistent deep threat. After three seasons, we should get the drift that Brian Hartline is not that threat. Clyde Gates is a rookie and hasn't yet shown he can provide that threat. Gates hasn't even shown a hint of getting deep. Neither Brandon Marshall nor Davone Bess are ever going to be that threat based on their talents.

So Miami needs that deep-threat receiver.

Not done. Still.

Miami needs offensive line help again in 2012. Vernon Carey is unsigned for next year so unless the team re-signs him, there will be a need at right guard. There definitely is a need at right tackle because Marc Colombo is a sack-machine, which is only good if he were a defensive tackle but is actually really awful because he's an offensive tackle.

Once again on Sunday, Colombo yielded his almost weekly sack.

Did I mention Paul Soliai is also unsigned for 2012? The handling of his contract situation was a nightmare when it began in October 2010. And that continues because he expects to be paid in the offseason when he's scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent. So that's an issue.

Bottom line? I just mentioned QB, WR, RG, RT, NT, OLB, CB, and FS as areas of concern or great need for Miami. I didn't even mention the fact Kevin Burnett, signed to be a star, has played like he might need to be replaced depending on who is putting the team together next offseason.

So does this sound like a team that is just about ready to contend? Does this sound like a team that would be great with the mere addition of Andrew Luck?

Sorry, fellas, but there's lot of work to be done here.

The Dolphins should move Sean Smith to free safety. Coming out of college the guy had tremendous ball skills, and everyone saw that in his preseason game against the Saints. He just doesnt have the quickness to stay glued to WRs, but as a rover patrolling the middle of the field, he could be salvagable. Ryan Clark isn't overly talented, yet Pittsburgh still managed to shut down Tom Brady yesterday. And some of the Dolphins OLine deficiencies would get masked by a QB who could change protections and help them out a little bit. Matt Moore is an OK back-up, but a great QB can make all the difference. Just look at the Indianapolis Colts if you don't believe that....

#2.

Dan is a tremendously annoying gas bag who just can't stop talking for one single, solitary second. Pay no heed to his constant prattle. There must have been a break in the action which caught him with nothing much worth saying.

Imagine having him sitting next to you on a cross country Greyhound Bus trip. Not pleasant!

It is really quite simple. The Phins need a quarterback. A player that can win games for them. Right now, they have nothing without one. There are too many weak links in the chain and nobody that carries the team.

I defer to Pennington as proof. Not a great qb but an oustanding football player who brought this team to the playoffs from 1-15. And then you fill in the team around that person.

With a great qb, we would probably be sitting at 500 instead of this mess. With a great qb you can add personel to help him. Players play for a good qb and play outstanding for great qb.

The whole game changes when people believe.

"Parcells said you are what your record says you are," Ross said. "But certainly we're a much better team than our record says it says. Last week, I was looking at some power ratings and we were No. 25. So I don't think we're No. 31 or 32 ...

The Problem is clear, We're # 25....Idiot Ross seems satisfied, Nothing here to see, Move along.

Mando, Same list that I(And You had) Back before the Draft..........Oh yeah BTW, Also include A HC,GM, And Owner to Needs... JMHO..

Oh Yeah, Good Morning Fin Fans.....

Amazing that Diedroff had anything kind to say about Miami seeing that he has a man crush on Tom (Bunchen)Brady..., I mean the guy actually almost gushes when he does a Pats game....

The dolphins play like dead people... their faces look real blank... are they... could it be?

Zombies???

watch out the zombie apocalypse!!!

good post Armando, but you must go further in your reasoning: our n°1 need right now is a great personnel man to fix all the roster problems that you rightly pointed out...

You are dead on, Armando.
But if you put Tom Brady in a Dolphins uniform they would have been a lot better, regardless of other needs.
Yesterday I really liked what I saw from the Dolphins. Even though I really want Andrew Luck, I am starting to believe that Miami will find a win sometime soon. They showed guts and promise yesterday, but the Colts will end up winners of the Luckery.
Now is the time to fins out who the next QB in the draft is. "Landry Jones"? I haven´t heard much about him and I havent seen him at all. please write a piece about him, since the chance of drafting him seems more probable than getting Luck.

It's like watching a 3 hour version of Pros vs. Joes out there.

We need to forget about trying to build a team from scratch. We need to blow this team up, draft a TOP flight QB, and hit free agency aggressively. None of this pretending to be shopping stuff anymore. I'd rather be 0-7 looking like the Panthers than 0-7 looking like the Dolphins.

LOOK IT's SIMPLE.

WE NEED A HEAD COACH.

MOST OF THE PLAYERS WE PICKED UP I'M NOTBIG ON.

BUT SOME I THINK ARE NOT SOUND IN THIER TECHNIQUE.

AND THAT's COACHING.

IT's SO BAD NOW THAT LONG IS TRIPPING OVER HIS FEET.

THE DOLPHINS ARE CLOSE.

ARMANDO MUST NOT BE WATACHING.

THEY CAN't CLOSE OFF GAMES.

THAT's COACHING.

SOMETIMES THEY START OFF FLAT.

THAT's COACHING.

BUT WHO CARES BECAUSE THEY PRACTICE HARD?

DOES THAT SOUND LIKE A COACH WHO CELEBRATES FGs MORE THAN TDs OR WHAT?

WE ARE CLOSE.

AND A REAL COACH WILL PROVE IT.

I think Ross is punishing Tony. He is going to make Tony suffer the rest of the season until he quits. He wants Tony to tap out.

Armando, I can not argue the Dolphins just suck. We can discuss all the reasons but I think they have been written about already. What does bother me is the ESPN countdown group protecting Parcells. Sunday even Ditka got into the act by stating that the moves made since Parcells left is the reason for the winless season thus far. Which does not of course account for the very poor Parcells blue print.

You forgot playmaking TE.

Mando,

If the truth hurts then this article cuts like a knife send it to every member of the team and tweet it to Bush so he can finally have his meltdown on the subject. I do have a couple of comments though, I thought it very interesting the amount of holes the OL opened on the left side with the more fleet footed Garner moving in there allowing Pouncey to get over quicker been saying it for two damn years watching Incognito move is down right painful and Sparano calls him his 2nd best player on OL???? I believe you can role with those 3 on the left if Sparano doesn`t ruin Jake`s career whose obviously hurt while sticking with Carey one more year if you can find a RT and that isn`t hard in FA

To those that think Sean Smith can play FS I say that`s crazy, he`s not a good tackler or hates the contact and he`s to big and slow but I`ll tell you who would be a Pro Bowl FS and that`s Vontae who reminds of a young Rod Woodson who ended up being a better FS than CB and then start to look for a couple of new corners, really. It would be ashame to loose Soliai but is he worth 8 Mil a year and how much of it do you actually guarantee??

At WR they simply fall in love with a group and ignore the rest we have two quick as hell players in Gates and Moore but they are 1st being tutored by the former RB`s Coach and don`t really get the opportunities reminds of Sparano year in year out saying that A.Armstrong had alot of heart but didn`t have it for the NFL and the guy goes to Wash and becomes a difference maker. I`m not saying these guys are Pro Bowl material but they at least have the speed to keep opposing Safties honest. There are things that can be done more creatively than they`re doing it!!

Mando, re-read what you wrote your article reads like you either waked and baked or were drunk off your keester last night, bottoms up pal !!

The only problem I have with Mando if he left out TE and DLine as far as holes are concerned. This team is void of playmakers. They simply don't have them anywhere. They haven't for years now. That's why me and many others watch the drafts and can't understand passing on guys that were difference makers in colleg and picking up

Stiffs. That's what they draft. Stiffs.

Yeremiah Bell publicly admonishes Reggie Bush for saying the team stinks and then he half-heartedly attempts to tackle a Giants receiver on his way into the endzone. Way to back it up Y.B. Played more like Aunt Jemima on that one.

I still think half of the fan base could put together a good team by just watching Mayok & Kiper & trying to acquire picks instead of trading them away like they were expiring coupon vouchers......

Moving Sean Smith to FS is a joke, he doesn't tackle and don't like contact. As far as balls skills! You call ball skills one interception in preseason ball skills oh please. When the ball is in the air this guy doesn't know what to do it's like he's shock the ball coming his way.

tradeseansmith.com

Everybody post this on his Twitter @seansmith24!

We lack talent at every single position besides P and Kicker.

Odrick Misi Jerry Turner Edds White Nalbone Smith are all draft busts.

firejeffireland.com

THE LAST PLAY WHEN THE GIANTS SCORED THE GO AHEAD TOUCHDOWN YB AND THE OTHER GUY, CULVER GAVE NO EFFORT AT ALL TO KEEP HIM OUT OF THE ENDZONE , THESE GUYS LAY DOWN EVERY WEEK AT THE END OF THE GAME WHY DON'T YOU ASK THEM WHY? IT IS ON FILM

While I don't disagree with what Armando is saying....obviously the Dolphins stink top to bottom....a franchise QB can make that all seem less important. Case in point? Indy. With Peyton Manning they're a playoff team. Without him, they're the only team that may be worse than Miami.

So yes, all of those other areas are a major concern and are going to need to be overhauled along with the rest of the team. But don't compare a safety or an outside backer to a franchise QB. Luck would give this franchise a lift that it hasn't had since Danny Boy was under center.

You can lay much of this teams woes on the GM and coaching staff first. Every time this team plays I spin about 5000 rpm's in my grave. Let it play out for the rest of the season then have security escort Ireland and the rest of the ilk of the premises.

I did peer through the clouds to watch Stanford come back and win against USC this past Saturday. Sure would be nice to draft him but I have no doubt that this current regime will find a way to phock that up.

Oh well, at least the cheerleaders up here are hot!!

Respectfully,

Joe Robbie's corpse

Armando, if the Dolphins fire Ireland along with Sparano. Then perhaps Channing Chowder will return. He was released due to Ireland's vendetta against him. How can the release of Chowder be an upgrade? Look at the difference in the defense from last season to this one. It was Ireland's spin. I'm now of the opinion that GM Ireland for his poor moves after Parcells left should also be fired or at the very least stripped of control.

Tell us something the whole world doesn't already know.

Like the sun shines during the day and not at night.

How about telling us the team went 1-15 in 2007?

Or, better yet, let us know that Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941.

our defense does not run to the ball. They stand and watch the game, not play the game. And did we all see Jake Long get put on his ass..pro bowler my ass... he is average at best...how many times does a francise get first pick in the draft? and we take a left tackle..now sweating getting first pick again hell lets hope Ross makes no changes, best chance we have to go 0-16..no more home games fgor this ticket holder since 1970...

P>S> and of course..lots of MVP'S are left tackles...we should of got rid of this crew right then...

"And while Dierdorf is an expert and I'm a nobody"

Well for once you got something right Mando!

Miami Dolphins = The Keystone Cops

Miami ills would quickly be cured by a franchise QB. Are they great at anywhere else? No. But a great QB would mask all of that. Maybe not to the extent of making them Super Bowl contenders. But, certainly playoff contenders. The Rams? The only talent they have is DE and QB. I agree with Dierdorf. One game does change that.

mr ross, please sell the team.

Dierdorf, Ross AND some posters on here just don't want to believe their lying eyes. They see names, they see stats, but they don't see what's ACTUALLY HAPPENING ON THE FIELD.

I think what clouds things up is this team has NO STRATEGY to win. For four years, Sparano's strategy is: Play well, try to build a lead, then SIT ON IT and try to ride it out.

And for four years, we've squandered many a game doing just that. That's NOT how you win in the NFL. You have to keep pushing, keep extending the lead. 62-7 isn't a big enough lead for this team to sit back on. They are NOT THAT GOOD!

But, I also agree, this team is underplaying. In '08, when the defense saw the offense playing well, under Pennington's leadership, executing and scoring, they stepped up. Good execution on one side of the ball breeds better results from everyone else. So, no, we don't just need a new QB to be a Playoff team, but that at least would make others play UP instead of playing DOWN (like they are doing now).

In this league of parity, the difference between being a good team or being a poor team could be small. Every team has elite talent on it or the NFL would be full of replacement teams - do you recall how bad most of the games were with the replacement teams?

Anyway, every team has loads of talent so from that point of view, I accept Dan's patronizing comments - as a fan it actually makes me feel a little better. ?

Well said mando. A good rb to run with Thomas would be nice too. Bush is a better we than a rb.

I agree with a few of the fan posts. We have major needs but I am encouraged by the few glimpses we get out of a few players and just wish we would use the rest of the season to play these folks regularly. The more we see from them the better.

Garner at left guard looked really solid yesterday. Play him more.

Clay looks solid in both receiving and blocking. We never heard Fasano's name. That is fine. Play Clay more.

I don't know why Hartline is in the game. Play a four receiver set and get Moore and Wallace into the game regularly. We should be using big targets with some decent speed. Gates is raw but game time experience will help him too. Play them more.

I thought Slaton looked OK yesterday on the few runs he had. I like Hilliard on Special Teams but he lacks a burst. Rest Thomas 4 weeks to make sure he gets healthy. Bush looked good yesterday. Play Slaton more to spell Bush.

JT and Misi are doing little to pressure the QB. Their run stopping is not great. Lets get Alama-Francis and Mitchell in to see what they can do. I love JT but his time is over. Get Misi in on 3rd downs (assuming he is healthy). Play these three more.

Langford's name has not been called all year. Solai is fat with cash and is playing poorly. Get Starks, Merling and Odrick in the game as NT, DE and DE. Lets see what these three can do for the primary plays. Can they hold up? Do we shift to a 4-3 and see if Langford/STarks/Solai can play DT in that scheme. What the hel- let's try it. What are we going to do lose another game????

The absolute glaring areas of need without any doubt is QB and CB. We need to focus here in the draft. Smith has to go. He is the biggest (I mean tallest) pu-sy I have seen in uniform. Allen and Wilson don't have it. We need 2 CB's badly.

QB, CB, CB, DE, TE, WR in that order. I don't care if it is Free Agency or the Draft. Those are the 6 positions that are most pressing. As long as we go with QB first I don't care how the other 5 are filled.

JPAO, mostly agree with your areas of need, but you left out a GLARING one, OLB. I would forget DE (we've concentrated too much on that in the last 4 years). Truth is, in a 3-4 scheme, DE is not a very important position (all they do is stop the run, and in a passing league, that's less important now). Instead of DE, we need a great compliment to Wake. An OLB who can get pressure on the QB and take away the double-teams to Wake's side. We can fill the DE position in the future, but we have enough to compete next year if we fill the other roles.

Also, I don't agree we need 2 CBs, we only need 1. We have Davis, we have Jimmy Wilson, we just need to replace Smith (even though since he's young, I see the team waiting another year to see if he comes around).

Instead, we MUST have a FS. A REAL ONE! If we move Reshad to SS (getting rid of Yeremiah) and then get a FS, or just replace one of them (Reshad/Clemons) with a FS, I don't care. But we won't win with a Safety that CAN create turnovers.

Other than that, I agree, QB (most, ALL-IMPORTANT), WR, TE. Oh, SH*T, forgot RT. We don't get that, and forget Luck doing much next year. We MUST have a better RT.

That's probably more than we can do in 1 year, but if we come close, we'll compete. Then we need the 2nd year to fill in the remaining holes. THEN, in year 3, we should be seriously contesting for the Playoffs (IF we have a HC worth a damn, with a winning offensive/defensive strategy).

This team is 3 years away if we have a talented GM, an effective HC, and good Coordinators. But that's a big IF with this team.

I agree with Armando 100% on each and every one of those position needs...we need A TON of help. That's why this franchise QB will fix all/suck for luck BS isn't going to fix a thing. NO rookie qb is helping us even if his last name is Marino. He can't help "Monster Marshall" or any of the recieving corp keep their balance or hang on to balls in the endzone, he can't keep a finess rb from leaving the game to sit the bench and get a neck rub as he did vs. the Jets (though he stepped it up this week)and most importantly he can't kick the F'n D in the nuts and tell 'em to sack up and have some heart in the second half!!! That's the biggest thing that, to me, is glaringly obvious...THEY HAVE NO HEART IN THE 4th WHEN THEIR DOWN. Every week they look completely deflated...and I don't think that's all on Sporano. Maybe some coordinator changes are in order bc it seems to look like the talent is not utilized propoerly on either side of the ball. Whatever though... they blow and I'm just angry for now... and sad...

lets face it;sparano was a div3 coach at n.haven. penne was the coach when sparano went 11-5. sparano's/irelands only credentials were riding parcells coat-tails into a job they didnt earn and werent qualified for. ross now is surrounded by his associates who arent football guys. many bad days ahead.

I DISAGREE,... Let me explain...
A quarterback, like luck, could make acurate deep throws, and become the consistant QB Miami has lacked for over 10 years. So who improves...

WR, RB, OL, TE,...

A quarterback, like luck, could make acurate throws on 3rd down. This would keep the Defense rested and alert. Maybe even score in the redzone. So who improves...

DL, LB, CB, S,...

ALSO,... A new Coach could inspire the team to win. Teach proper technique. Utilize players correctly. So who improves...

Everyone...

PS: Did you notice how our CB were turning their hip half way inside galloping backwards? Seemed like the announcers were punishing those players for bad technique. Not only did Wilson execute this way but Will Allen did on his TD mistake. Is there a technique problem there?

I have to agree with dierdof. Football is a sport that every player relies on another. The dolphins problem is a certian position they are so bad it cripples the team. On offense the Quarterback and the Right tackle is so bad, that it cripples the offense. I getting so tired of watching this QB with no pocket presence, doesnt know where to throw the ball and him getting leveled by whomever is betting Marc Colombo. Vernon Carey is playing well know, but Colombo is making the whole line look terrible. We must get a QB and a fucntional Right Tackle and this offense will blossom. The Defense is the lack of D Line play period, is making the corners and Linebackers look bad.

one of the writers said its been 184 days since ireland spoke to the fans and/or media. jeff's in hiding with no answers.

MANDO,
I HOPE ROSS READS THIS COLUMN AND WAKES UP. HE IS A COMPLETE IDIOT WHO SHOULD OWN A ROLLER DERBY TEAM AND GET THE FFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!! OUT OF THE NFL. HE'S A BUSINEES MAN- BULL SHEEEEEEEEEEEET!! SMASH Zionism!

No offense Mando, but this analysis is complete horsesh*t. I challenge you to present me one complete team in the NFL right now. Green Bay at 7 and 0? They were 30th total defense entering last weekend. 32nd against the pass. New England? Can't stop the pass. Pittsburgh? Sub par against the run. But what do all the good teams have in common? Very good qb play and excellent coaching. Miami has neither. Many posters were more insightful than you and pointed to the colts fall from grace with the subtraction of manning.

Atlanta picks matt Ryan, gets a hungry educated coach and they've been a factor ever since.

I guarantee you with Andrew luck and a good coach, Miami becomes a 10 win team overnight. And unlike 2008, they will be able ti sustain it for years this time.
