Gruden apparently out of everyone's coaching search

ESPN announced within the hour that former Oakland and Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden has signed an "exclusive agreement" with the network  that will "keep him on sports television's signature series and out of coaching for the next five years."

That obviously means scratch Gruden from the list of folks who might be lining up to coach the Dolphins should Tony Sparano not be able to turn things around and keep the Dolphins on their present winless course.

Gruden guided the Tampa Bay Bucs to a Super Bowl victory during his tenure with the team.

“Jon is a rare individual who has been successful at everything he has done, going from one of the youngest coaches to win a Super Bowl to reinventing himself with this new broadcasting career in his 40s," Bob LaMonte, the agent for Gruden said in a statement. "He has an unmistakable enthusiasm for football that will continue to entertain fans on ESPN.”

This obviously affects the Dolphins. As I reported to you in my column today, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is already making contingency plans on what to do with the Dolphins if his team doesn't turn things around.

Part of that plan would include hiring a new coach. The thing is, Ross doesn't want just any coach. He thinks one way to get the Dolphins on the right track might be to hire a "star" coach that would have final say over all football operations matters. That coach would then hire a general manager of his choice.

Obviously, Gruden would have qualified as a "star" coach. Gruden served as an NFL head coach for 11 seasons with the Oakland Raiders (1998-2001) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2002-08). He compiled a career record of 100-85 and led his teams to five division titles. Gruden’s best season was 2002 when the Buccaneers finished the regular season 12-4 and captured the Super Bowl XXXVII title with a 48-21 victory over the Raiders, the team he had coached just one season earlier.

So the list of possible "star" coaching candidates shrinks by one. That list now only includes Jeff Fisher, Bill Cowher and Tony Dungy. (I don't think Dungy wants to come back to coaching, but I'm putting his name there anyway.)

I must warn you: As I write in my column, Ross may opt to go another direction on the hiring front if the Dolphins don't turn things around. He might hire a "star" personnel man or GM type. He might hire his own Football Czar typeand that person would hire a coach.

And that hire might not necessarily be a "star," but simply a coach the "star" Football Czar/GM believes is ready to take the Dolphins to the next level.

[Update: Mike Florio makes the point on ProFootballtalk.com that ESPN is refusing to say how this contract extension prohibits Gruden from going to the NFL. Thus, Florio believes Gruden can go to the NFL at any time if he wishes. So there's that.]

Never wanted the guy to begin with! And Yeah! your not a real person, just a program created by some geek!

I see the program is still working yeah! :)

I love Gruden.......just don't think he would have done well here.

Glad our conversations can move on

Gruden has always viewed TV as a platform to coaching again. I find it very hard to believe he would actually sign a true "exclusive" deal to be on TV and out of coaching.

The details of this deal require further study. Coming to the conclusion that it absolutely keeps him out of coaching is premature, imo.

Gruden, Smruden..

This guy is overratted, and took Tony Dungy team to the Superbowl, plus who wants a coach that resembles Chuckey.

Go get that guy from The Walking dead for coach, you know the redneck who sawed off his wrist to break loose from the handcuffs on the roof! Yea him.....

Broncos are trading Lloyd to the Rams.......FYI

Why can't he get out of the contract? That is not clear.

Still a candidate. Devil is in the details.

In the history of the NFL no coach that has won the Superbowl has gone on to coach another team and win it again.

I highly doubt that he can't get out of the ESPN deal if he wants to return to coaching.

Put yourself in Gruden's position. He already has a SB ring. Why give up a cush, high profile TV job to go back to the 100 hour a week grind of coaching again.

lets see work all year or 16 weeks for just about the same pay......i'll take the 16 weeks.
looks like chucky is smarter than a 5th grader.

Ohh Mando arent you the funny one!!! Coaches "lined" up for the Dolphins job!!! HAHAHA

I hope there's a no quit clause (or the Dolphins would have to pay billions to ESPN) because the Dolphin's don't need Gruden.

cowher is my choice if they go HC first direction

I wonder if parcells wants another Czar position.

the guy won with another coach personnel and couldnt sniff the playoffs with his own guys.vastly overrated!!!!!!!

I highly doubt that he can't get out of the ESPN deal if he wants to return to coaching.

I think it's safe to assume that ESPN spoke with Gruden before announcing that he's not leaving to coach any time soon.

I guess the lure of working for Ross and a very loyal and rabid fan base wasn't appealing enough for Gruden. (wink! wink!).

I keep here this 'football czar' talk. Who exactly are we talking about? Wasn't Parcells supposed to be that? Wasn't Holmgren supposed to be that? I don't think the actual thing even exists. Jim Harbaugh is showing that a College coach, if he can get all his players to buy into his program can get the most of out of them. Same with Chan Gailey. Are we calling Buddy Nix a 'football czar'? Forget it!!.....the idea doesn't exist. It's a made up media term. The winning is done between the lines. Get a coach/coaches the players can truly believe in and you'll see a team turn around in a hurry. The Bills are doing it with sventh round and undrafted players for God's sake and they're competitive every week. Cut the nonsense and let's get serious about producing every Sunday.

Luck and the Stanford OC

These TV coaches are living the good life after coaching. They are making more money, without having to work that hard.

If you are looking for a coach. We need college coaches looking for an NFL opportunity.

ARMANDO,

WE DONT WANT GRUDEN THER ONLY REEASON HE WON THAT SUPER BOWL IS CUZ TONY DUNGY LEFT HIM A WINNING TEAM

THANKS BUT NO THANKS

HE SUCKS AND HAS BEEN OUT OF THE GAME FOR WAY TO LONG

WHY DONT WE COMPILE A LIST OF UPCOMING COORDINATORS THAT WILL BE THE NEXT SEAN PAYTON OR MIKE SHERMAN

Armando, how about Les Miles? I could see Peterson the czar and Les Miles the coach, perhaps?

COLLEGE COACHES DONT MAKE IT IN THE NFL THAT WILL TAKE ANOTHER
3 YEARS

TONY SPARANO IS THE SECOND COMING OF MIKE TICE

Gruden would have never been my choice either, did basically nothing in Oakland and took the Dungy team to the Super Bowl, after that, nothing..Tampa was once again Tampa..enough said...And Miami fans do not have the patience for Cowher, although he would be my first choice..It took a long time for him to get Pittsburg where they are..

Who is this football czar you speak of? Carl Peterson? The Parcells experiment shows that the football czar route doesn't work.

My personal vote would be to go after Andy Reid after Philadelphia stupidly fires him. The Eagles have consistently had a playoff team since he has been around, and he is great with QBs.

".......should coach Tony Sparano not be able to turn things around."
Mando, that' funny.

Fu[k Gruden.

That Super Bowl ring should have been Tony Dungy's!

Per Armando:

"Obviously, Gruden would have qualified as a "star" coach."

IMO, Gruden would have definitely qualified as "fools gold. Seems now the football gods may be smiling upon us. Now if we can just have a lotta "LUCK."

Yeah me too, Gruden was NOT on my list of coaching wants either...he's done coaching successfully..if he wasn't he would be wanting to coach somewhere ..his coaching fire is gone guys.
In no particular order..
My List (aka 2 cents) :
Cowher
Fisher
Ryan (Rob)
Reid
Or someone I dont know that's ready!

"
Ross is apparently so committed to doing this that the source confirmed it was the owner himself who told Jeff Ireland to shut down the attempt to add Kyle Orton in the summer when the general manager was still trying to trade for the Denver quarterback.

“Orton is a nice quarterback,” the source said. “But he’s not a franchise quarterback, and we weren’t going to pay him like one when he isn’t one.”

Wow, Ross shutdown this nonesense hole Ireland was going to dig us into by bringing Orton aboard. Kudos to Ross!

Gruden just signed "a new" five-year deal to stay at ESPN. It seems that all the flirting about coaching here during the season opening MNF game was just a ploy to get a juicy contract extension.

Well played, Sir!

It doesn’t stop there. Ross is so focused on getting his team a franchise quarterback that he has told friends, much as losses pain him in the short-term, he’s aware they offer long-term gain because they put Miami in better position to pick Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck in the next draft.

Wow, it even seems short of a miraculous turn around and playoff appeaqrance. Ross is down with "Suck For Luck" too.

Im beginning to like this guy Ross.

Dont forget the team Gruden played in the super bowl was the team he coached a year earlier.
Im not taking up for gruden but just sting fact

Some posters have have rip those of us proclaiming suck for luck. We're not a very good team and will have lots of losses anyway. We are just of a crew hoping those losses pan out to mean future success in the uppr echelon teams realm.

Suck for Luck is a slogan only. We already suck as a team. To tamk a season first you have to be at least a borderline good team. This franchise has been well underneath south of the borders quite a few season ago.

We dont have to tank the season. We've been "tanking" it for well over a decade now!

Larry the Cable Guy is as dumb as bag of hammers whe he says that all Gruden did was take "Tony Dungy's players to a Super Bowl"!

I guess ol' Larry is just too stupid to realize that Gruden did what Dungy couldn't: take the Bucs to a Super Bowl and win a championship with the Bucs!!

I swear, IQ tests should be required before allowing some of you guys to post.

Suck For Luck isnt wishing to tank the season. We've been tanking seasons for well over a decade now. Some us are just hoping something great finally arises out it!

yesterday's gone,

Ross might be down with sucking for Luck, but we have some pretty stiff competition- the Colts and the Rams look unstoppable.

Russ,

KMA buddy

Ralph Ortega, as much as Andrew Luck will be 2012's ultimate prize, I would settle for a top 5 draft position. The consolation of guys like Landry, RGII, or even Kellen Moore wouldnt greatly disappoint me.

Any of these guys could very represent the upper echelon of nfl qb's over the next decade. We just can't keeping banking on qb's representing the middle of the pack or lower in our nfl future.

For over a decade now we've witnessed how well that's worked out for us. Not very well, has it?

I will not be the coach of Alabama.

I agree with dolfan. My top choice would be Andy Reid. I think his offensive mind is exactly what we need here in Miami. Dungy would be great but he won't come back to Coaching.

Cowher/Fisher would be my bottom 2 choices (though I wouldn't mind either of them).

We should "fish" Brandon Marshall for a 2nd rounder. I highly doubt anyone bites, but you never know, we should still fish him out there nevertheless.

I think we should hire the coach with the best success rate for second round draft picks.

Just sayin. :)

DC, either an offensive minded hc who can land us a defensive minded guru. Or vice vera would be fine.

Jimmy Johnson was a defensive minded guru as our hc, but he never hired an offensive minded guru and let him bring in the offensive talent. Had JJ done this we're probably not in the 10 year swoon we're in right now.

I AM WITH ROSS ON THIS I WOULD LIKE TO SEE COWHER, DUNGY WASN'T BAD,BUT I RATHER HAVE A GUY THAT IS FIRED UP THEN LAYED BACK, NO WAY TONY TURNS IT AROUND IN A 0-4 HOLE, THE PLAYERS STOP LISTENING TO HIM ABOUT YEAR AGO WHAT IS IT 7 GAMES IN A ROW WE LOST OR 8, SORRY TONY YOU JUST CAN'T DO IT, IRELAND DIDN'T HELP YOU MUCH THOUGH, AT LEAST YOU ARE A MULTI MILLIONAIRE AND YOU GOT TO DO WHAT ALL OF US FANS DREAM OF DOING, YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE SMART OR GOOD JUST GIVEN THE CHANCE LUCKY YOU, ENJOY YOUR LAST FEW GAMES!!!!

Poizen, this regime tries to get "to cute" with it's 2nd rd selections. Just like clock work the 2nd rd picks have had us fans going, "WHO"?

I too think Gruden would be poor coach, but would take him in a heart beat.He would make us better, not saying much. As another poster said, leave multi-million a dollar, travel around the country, stay at all the best places, eat all the best food, to watch film 10 hours a day? Our own beloved Dan Marino lasted a week before saying forget this.

Tony chose a very bad time to go with the acquisition of Marc Columbo. He defends this guy like his very job depends on it. Unfortunately for him, this year it really does, and vehemently trying to defend a guy(Columbo) whom everyone but the most important guy(hc) to the team clearly sees sucks. Is like the final nail in his hc coffin.

We should trade Brandon Marshall to the highest bidder before tomorrow's(Tuesday) trade deadline. Clearly Marshall doesnt seem to be our future at #1 wr. His hands are far to remote from clutch.

I've been saying since last season that Gruden wasn't going anywhere! Why should he give up a lucrative contract for 16-18 hour days and all that stress! Once again I'm proven right....he's got an exclusive 5 year deal with ESPN! I didn't want him anyway!

1) Gruden was an oyster shucker at Hooters in Tampa.
2) Gruden was given Tony Dunges team that was already built.
3) Gruden knew Oakland's play book in the Super Bowel, it was never changed from the year before when Gruden was head coach and his best friend became head coach of Oakland.
4) Gruden never won anything after the Super Bowel.

I think our President is like Yeah! Not a real person, just a program created by some socialist geek!

Trade Marshall. Time to see what we have in Clyde Gates before season's end.

I have two left feet and I'm tough. Remember that Budweiser commercial.

WASsssssssssssuuuuuuuuuuppppppppppppppppppp!

Fisher fits the bill.
Solid playoff contender and almost won a Super Bowl.
He has had enough time from the game to refresh.
And he will be uber-motivated to stuff it down the Titans' throats and win a Super Bowl.

Cowher, unless he's just a personnel guy and I don't think he's suited to be just that, won't want to go to the edge now that he's spent time with his family. Like Gruden, why get back in the sausage grinder when you've already won?

Please, please...I beg of everyone keep Andy reid off the potential list of candiates. The man is a baffoon. You think Sparano makes questionable timeout calls, watch an Eagles game. As for picking assisantas, he promoted Juan Castillo to be his DC from being the offensive line Coach.

When Castillo said to Reid that he's brining in the Wide Nine, Andy thought he was talking about the Reid family reunion. (A jab at his impressive size).

Thank god Gruden is out , he is over-rated and not that good...

Ross is an IDIOT...You don't hire a super star coach...YOU HIRE THE GM FIRST and then...Let him hire the coach.
