Perception may hurt Dolphins in hunt for Cowher

Sometimes perception is reality. And sometimes that's enough to hurt.

Well, this morning, I'm told the Dolphins may have been hurt in a self inflicted way by the lasting pictures of former Florida coach Urban Meyer sharing time on the sideline with Dolphins owner Stephen Ross at Sun Life Stadium Sunday afternoon.

I wrote in Monday's Herald how Ross and Meyer shared time on the sideline before the game, during the fourth quarter, and during overtime as the Dolphins lost to the Denver Broncos. I made the point that the time the two spent together during the game was coincidental because Ross was headed toward the locker room rather than the field had the Dolphins held their lead.

I also wrote that Meyer isn't a coaching candidate for the team on an interim basis, but if you know Ross and his desire to hire a "star" coach next January, Meyer cannot be discarded longterm from the conversation until either he or Ross says he's not a candidate.

So basically, the time the men spent together wasn't a big deal from a practical standpoint. But apparently from the perspective of football people, the time could be costly to Ross and the Dolphins.

I'm told the sight of Ross laughing and talking with with Meyer while current coach Tony Sparano was busy trying to get his team its first win upset some football folks around the NFL. This morning, I already have three three emails from football people around the league who are livid at the Dolphins owner for "dissing," as one put it, Sparano on his own sideline.

And apparently Bill Cowher could be one of those that might have been left shaking his head. Cowher, by the way, is on Miami's informal list of coaches to approach once the season is over and the Dolphins go searching for a permanent coach replacement. Fact is, Cowher might be the leading candidate for the Dolphins if anyone can be considered that.

But one person who is familiar with Cowher's thinking tells me the former Pittsburgh coach cringes at the idea of working for an owner who would "show up" his current coach as some football folks believe happened Sunday.

Cowher, you see, is keeping close tabs on how the Dolphins are conducting themselves these days because he recognizes Miami is a possible landing spot. But, my source said, Cowher has apparently been disappointed in some of the things he's seen from the Dolphins as to how they treat Sparano, dating back to last year.

It's plausible if you believe Cowher wanted nothing to do with the Dolphins last year when Ross was looking around following a 7-9 season. Cowher was rumored to have told Ross he would not speak about any coaching vacancy while the Dolphins had a coach still on the job.

I cannot say that Cowher actually got that message to the Dolphins or not. But I know people close to him are convinced Cowher doesn't take kindly to other football coaches being mistreated. And, as I just said, a handful of football people who emailed me this morning thought Sparano was disrespected by Ross and Meyer.

So it's quite possible what Ross might see as harmless happenstance time spent with Meyer on Sunday might cost him a chance to land Cowher because the former Pittsburgh coach and other NFL football people have a different opinion what that time meant.

Again, the truth is the Meyer-Ross show on the sideline during the game was coincidental. But that doesn't matter to some people. They perceive that time the owner shared with a potential future coach as disrespect toward his current coach.

And, true or not, perception is reality in their minds.

just sounds like a bad happensance to me!

happenstance even.

Ross = Moe
Ireland = Larry
Sparano = Curly

Nuff Said

If I were Cowher or any other coach, it would cost this idiot "Ross" a truckload of cash and I would get everything structured "my" way. "My way or the highway" all because of how he chased Harbaugh last year.

This Guy steps in it everytime He Makes a Move.
Actually, this Morning i was thinking the Same
Thing. More Idiot Moves. I think Ross Nerds to
Envite the Jets for His Next Photo shoot.
Frign ASK wipe!!!!

Miami is the worst team in the NFL. The Rams are much better, atleast they have a QB. This article http://adf.ly/3MtAK
said it best.
Sporano needs to be fired by mid-season.
A remedy for a winning team is to trade all the wide receivers, dump the DB's and keep only Davis.

Marshall should fetch a first or second round pick. Trade the 2011 overall pick for many picks and draft a quality QB in the second round. Miami needs to find a way to draft 10-11 quality players in next year's draft. Bring on Jimmy Johnson as a consultant for 2 years to help them draft quality draft picks.

Ross was on the sidelines because the game was supposed to be over. Everyone knows that.
Cowher is no messiah. If he doesn't want to come to Miami, so be it.
I would rather go with an up and coming young football mind than an old grumpy coach a la Parcells (I won a Super Bowl 10 years ago so I know everything about football)

A true businessman would understand how perception works. I'm starting to seriously question how Ross made his fortune. He is a complete buffoon and I am embarrassed to root for a team that he owns. His antics are going to continue costing us. I would love to have Bill Cowher coach this football team but would completely understand if he passed on the Dolphins.

What a stupid post or I am stupid for reading it!!!

You can change Sporano, you can change Ireland, you can change Dee, but what do you do when the owner keeps making bonehead moves???? Great, now if you fire Sporano you really look like the a**hole... This guy (Ross) has hijacked my team... An historically winning franchise reduced to a laughing stock... From Dee introducing clubs and other non-football attractions, to Ireland and his bumbling through drafts, to a coach (Sporano) thats lost respect completely... I'm dying here.... HELP!!!!!

Cowher has an ego problem and chucky cannot coach. Meyer would make a great hire for this team. Cowher is just too old, let him stay in retirement.

Chucky, since I cant recall his name is just not a good coach, so please quit calling his name as a replacement. He has never been a good coach and never will be one.

One great coach if was available eventhough old would be Dungy!

I am sure there's one good, young coach lurking out there somewhere. Form a committee and find the best young coach out there. We don't need a household proven coach to win.

Check out Tampa Bay coach, he's a good and cheap coach, doesn't break the bank and winning.

Start young and grow with a coach under 35.

Cowher isn't worth this column. Let the old bull roam his pasture. We want a young bull with some fresh ideas and some fight left in him.

Selling Jets shirts at the stadium, honoring the opposing quarterback and his college team at halftime... Are there any other ways we can give momentum to teams that oppose us on Dolphin home turf...?

Man, I thought my beloved Dolphins were the worst team..But, then I saw the Colts..The Rams as well....Ladies & gentlemen, we have a race our hands...3 teams down to the wire for #1!!!! So, it is not the #1 you wanted, but hey it is a start....Last week I was calling Suck for Luck people idiots..Well, I'm an idiot now.

Watching ESPN, NFL Network and anything else right now is so hard right now... Every story is about Tebow's great comeback... This is gonna last all week... Argh!!!!

I want to hear about how awful my team is, two blog posts on Urban Meyer? Ross was being a good host he wasn't taking business cards for a coaching vacancy. I don't find this the least bit enraging or wrong. Ross may suck but he didn't do anything wrong here; these "football people" are overreacting.

Below ROCK Bottom...There isn`t much to Cheer about?????

Is this like one of those idiotic "unwritten" rules of baseball? You know one of those unwritten rules from an unseen book that doesn't exist. This is completely ridiculous. If Cowher decides not to be the next head coach it won't be because Ross stood on the sideline talking to Oscar Meyer Weiner. It will be because this team is so lacking in talent that it will take years just to get to mediocre.

BANG!....goes the gun as the bullet once again tears through the flesh of our already mangled foot. Face it folks. We're in for an epic meltdown of Detroit Lions proportion. We're in this one for the long haul because from the very top to the very bottom, this organization can't get anything right.

Armando, do you want to know what I think about your article and you ?...

I think your article sucks and says nothing and I think you're an idiot.

Hey now! Ross stay up in the booth and stop your Jones impression. Oh wait, thats right we are the cowboys of the east. ross must be mini Jones.

Damn Colts!

Put Ross at the TOP of the list of those who need to be replaced in the Dolphins organization...include on that list those coaches who "teach" the players how to tackle and catch the ball.

Give Ross a break, the guy can't even breathe without being criticized. Are you really that angry about chasing Harbaugh? The 49ers seemed to have turned it around. Ross showed vision, it wasn't his fault Harbaugh chose SF.

Stupid... If Bill Cowher is worrying about the owner having a conversation with Urban Meyer, what the hell is he going to do when he inherits this pathetic roster? Cowher took 12 years to win a Superbowl with Pittsburgh and the officating in that game was highly questionable. Cowher would be a very poor choice and Meyer would stress out before halftime of the 1st game.

The media keeps saying we (the fans) want a high profile coach. We do not want another re-tred, I think we've seen enough of them. If the media wants a high profile coach than they need to say so, but leave us out of it. We want someone young and hungry, please no more, Parcells, Gruden, Cowher, Dungy... It's like the definition of insanity, "doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."

Cowher is a hypocrite then. Wasn't he the guy that had a list of three teams last year in which he'd coach...while those three teams still had HC's?

Ross has been bad at times to Tony, yet has still let him coach to this point. I think it has evened itself out.

Here is the next question: Is Cowher the answer?

Yea i gotta admit mando i never criticize your posts but this is probably the worst article ive ever seen you write!! This is crap, spin and your the one creating the perception lol
Do you think we REAL DOLPHIN FANS care about an incident such as this after such an epic but all too familiar loss!! In the great words of boomer and TJ CMON MAN!!!!!!!!

By the way, did Cowher show up Sparano on CBS when he was talking about how he should motivate the team for the Denver game?

You are reaching for stuff Mando.

Patrick, good points...BUT,see Sparano and Cam for examples of giving new guys a chance..I really believe good teams begin with the right guy in the front office picking the right players...Lame coaches all of a sudden look genius when they have great players...See that guy named Bill up in New England.

Again, I must say what is the big deal? These so called coaches need to grow up.

This crap happens to the players ALL THE TIME! Most recently Chad Henne. It just comes to say when you suck, you will be replaced.

OMG, just woke up and turned on the TV and first thing I see is Tebow and Denver making the 2. This is going to get really bad, and looking at our schedule, I honestly don't think we will win a game this year. The players just don't seem to have the heart, desire, intensity, or will to win and this isn't something new, this has been the problem for awhile. Yes the coaches and GM must share the blame, but the players too must take thier share. Most of our players would be backups on other teams. We need a total house cleaning, I can think of only a handful of our players that would be safe. Coaching candidates shouldn't include Cowher or Gruden, they're over rated. I live in steeler country and it wasn't always beer and skittles here for Cowher, he was on the hot seat numerous times, and he also had decent ownership to help, something we won't have as long as Ross owns our team. Gruden walked into a winning situation, enough said, besides we don't need 7 QBs on our roster. Dungy too old, no energy. I really don't have a solution for coach, but I feel we need to avoid these guys, even if we would find the right coach, it's still going to take almost a decade till we are even competitive, yes we are that bad, I can't even imagine what the atmosphere is like in south FLA. I will stay the course and continue to be a finfan but the GM, coaches and the players aren't making it easy.

Never gonna get on the "Suck For Luck" bandwagon. Not concerned about the QB. But I definitely want a good Head Coach.

No more offensive or defensive coordinators. We want a reputable Head Coach and if yesterday's debacle hurts us in getting Bill Cowher or any other decent Head Coach then Ross need to do the right thing...SELL THE TEAM.

Save face Mr. Ross by firing Ireland fist. Then fire Sparano. Now that would at least sow some sense of fairness.A little justice for for tony being stabbed in the back by Jeff.

scott in delaware, then I probably should be fired as a fan because I was HYSTERICALLY laughing at the loss.

This was one of the most entertaining games I've ever watched. I was watching with my buddy (Cowboys fan) and the whole game I'm quiet and stoic. After a bunch of horrible plays, my boy was like, "why aren't you getting angry, or happy, or anything?" I was like, "just watch, we're going to lose." He's yelling at Moore, laughing at Tebow. I don't say a peep all game.

Last 2 minutes, we crumble, and I get a HUGE grin on my face. "Told you," I said.

Do I know my team or what?

No matter who owns the team, it all starts with the right people (plural because it is a team effort here too) evaluating current and prospective personnel. You need coaches who can TEACH, MOTIVATE, and MAKE THE RIGHT GSMR TIME DECISIONS...

Yes, we have a clown show down here. Yes, it is going to take 5-10 years to get anywhere near what we had under Joe Tobbie and Coach Shula and his staff...

True fans bleed for their teams... I just hope we don't bleed out before we get life saving surgery...

lol, did you see me play yesterday? Mr. Ross, you might want to look at replacing your GM! You signed ME to be your QB competition and I stink!

Funny, Cowher's worried about SPARANO being dissed? LOL!!! 1-13 home record. 9 straight losses going into last Season. Question, who's dissing who? Sparano's trying to win a game, really Mando? Was your QB roster of Chad Henne and Matt Moore saying you wanted to win a game? Sparano's the QB, did he fight for anyone else.

Ask yourselves, how many times in the last 7 years has our starting QB lasted all year? My memory says maybe once ('08). So there was about a 100% chance Henne would get hurt at some point this year. Are YOU willing to risk the year on Matt Moore? Does that scream, "WE'RE SERIOUS ABOUT WINNING" to anyone?

Losing is the best thing this team could do (and coincidentally, the best thing the team does)!

Wow, now this is a stupid column! It was Tim Tebow day, Armando (also stupid). He was simply being hospitable. Is there not enough genuine sorrow to be written about?

In '04, I was miserable all year watching the Dolphins. In '07, pulling my hair out every Sunday, bad mood every Monday.

This year, I've never been as loose and stress-free in my entire life watching football. No nerves, no biting my nails. It's a pleasure.

Never thought losing could be this fun!

I agree DC Dolfan. When Tebow mount that come back in those last minutes. I took a sip of wine and said that's my Boys (Dolphins). I'm so ready to deep six this administration.

Let me get this straight.

Cowher is/was upset Ross wanted to talk to him while employing our current coach yet Cowher had not even comitted to getting back in the business?

Now because an owner is on the sidelines for the last 5 minutes of the game and he talks to Meyer now Cowher is upset again.

Sorry but this doesn't sound like a guy who really wants to coach again.

Enough with the Ross bashing.

If that is how Cowher thinks then we do not want him. Disrespectful, give me a break. Sparano has been disrespectful to the fan base for losing 12 of the last 13 home games, for celebrating field goals like they were TD's, for never being agressive and never putting an NFL caliber offense on the field, for being an offensive line "guru" and starting and defending guys like Columbo, for losing the last 9 games that he has coached, and finally for not quitting when obviously his team has.

So enough about all this respect garbage, if Cowher is too stupid to see that Sparano has been given way too much time to turn his mess around then let him walk to another team, I think that he is washed up anyway. Once a coach leaves football on his own accord and lives that nice cushy network life he loses the fire to win. Cowher is just another JJ or Parcells. If you want a big name get Fischer or Gruden they still have fire and know how to win. Remember until Cowher won a SB (after 15 years of tryiny with someone else picking his players) there was talk that Pittsburgh wanted him out because he could not win the big one. If it were not for Rothlisberger he would now have a SB ring.

A new way to lose......, I guess a blow-out will be next and the Giants might just do it...

screw cowher....coach mistreated??????? Waaaah!
sparano is a POS!
calling sparano a coach is a stretch!
stay in the studio Jaw, your days are past.
Fischer please come to miami.
bye bye sparano, you are an idiot (went for two to keep is a 2 possession game...a micro-cosm of his coaching inabilities!)

Only a fool would continue to give a hoot about this team.

There is not one single thing to admire about them from top to bottom. Not one.

That was good DC Dolfan. Laughed out loud. I nominate for best post ( ever! ) of the year.

2drink, you're formulating an opinion about Cowher based on a sepculative article from Mando? PULEASE

To all Dolphans who say we have talent & just need a coach, I implore you to revisit that line of thinking.

Funny, a questionable crop of early rd qb's this year continues to play quite well as we decided against going in that direction.

Newton is already a star. Personally watched Ponder played very well in his first start. Quite impressed & he is supposed to be the biggest stretch of them all. Gabbert has been decent enough on a bad team. Dalton has been impressive. Locker should soon get his chance.

Yesterday's game certainly hit a new low for this franchise. Tebow doesn't look anything like an NFL QB in style. I can't see him winning many games in the NFL unless he plays inferior opponents like the Dolphins.

Say it ain't so!!!

Good morning fellas,

Long time no chat with many of you. I just haven't cared to let my opinions be known because there was nothing to say. I was obvious that Miami is just a horrible team with little talent. But after yesterday's game wow! To give up a 15-0 lead with under 3 minutes, 2 TDs a 2 point conversion and to lose in OT at home when Miami had the ball in decent field position truly shows me this team is the worst in the league! It also shows me what I have been saying since last year "Tony Sparano is a JOKE".

As far as Ross talking to Urban Meyer, honestly shut the hell up Mando! You are making a story out of nothing. Report on what a joke this team is not some imaginary story. It was GATOR appreciation day or whatever Mike Dee created for ticket sales. Ross was playing host, nothing more!

Agreed about Tebow Joe. EXCEPT, Tebow has one thing that no QB has or had or will ever have...IT! He's a bonefied winner.

As far as "Suck for Luck", I'm very surprised to say this, because I never thought it would be true, but I think the team is actually TRYING to do it.

It's just too coincidental that we made the mistakes to give the game to them. It's also hilarious the two players who fought back the hardest during the week on the S4L campaign (Dansby and JT) were defenders who let Tebow win the game.

Seriously Joe, the 2-point conversion. I mean, this was even MORE PREDICTABLE than the Sanchez sneak. EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE in the ENTIRE WORLD knew Tebow was going to run it in. And the middle is that wide open?

C'mon dude, that ISN'T sucking for Luck in it's purest form? No one can seriously believe that.

I guess to all the people disgusted in that whole idea of tanking a Season, time to start screaming, because I'm not sure that's exactly what's happening in Miami.

I have to say, while I'm pleased we're losing, I felt better when we just lost because we suck. Tanking isn't very respectable.

Why talk about Cowher? If him or Chucky for that matter, were man enough to coach again they both would have done it by now. Jeff Fisher is the man we need to be talking to.

Ross can talk to whomever he wants. The only reason this is story is because sparano is about to get fired. If he was 5-1 and Ross was talknig to meyer then it wouldn'thave been a story. Forget meyer and cowher. We need a young hungry coach. And BTW I doubt cowher cares to whom ross talks. Money talks.

the best thing about yesterday was that we have the tie breaker for luck over denver. And denver is stuck with tebow LOL. Elway must be kicking himself because Tebow is his QB.

DC I agree. The 2 point conversion was sooo obvious that nolan was purposefully calling the wrong defensive play. They are trying to lose. More power to them. Now we have a chance at luck and denver get tebow LoL
