Perception may hurt Dolphins in hunt for Cowher

Sometimes perception is reality. And sometimes that's enough to hurt.

Well, this morning, I'm told the Dolphins may have been hurt in a self inflicted way by the lasting pictures of former Florida coach Urban Meyer sharing time on the sideline with Dolphins owner Stephen Ross at Sun Life Stadium Sunday afternoon.

I wrote in Monday's Herald how Ross and Meyer shared time on the sideline before the game, during the fourth quarter, and during overtime as the Dolphins lost to the Denver Broncos. I made the point that the time the two spent together during the game was coincidental because Ross was headed toward the locker room rather than the field had the Dolphins held their lead.

I also wrote that Meyer isn't a coaching candidate for the team on an interim basis, but if you know Ross and his desire to hire a "star" coach next January, Meyer cannot be discarded longterm from the conversation until either he or Ross says he's not a candidate.

So basically, the time the men spent together wasn't a big deal from a practical standpoint. But apparently from the perspective of football people, the time could be costly to Ross and the Dolphins.

I'm told the sight of Ross laughing and talking with with Meyer while current coach Tony Sparano was busy trying to get his team its first win upset some football folks around the NFL. This morning, I already have three three emails from football people around the league who are livid at the Dolphins owner for "dissing," as one put it, Sparano on his own sideline.

And apparently Bill Cowher could be one of those that might have been left shaking his head. Cowher, by the way, is on Miami's informal list of coaches to approach once the season is over and the Dolphins go searching for a permanent coach replacement. Fact is, Cowher might be the leading candidate for the Dolphins if anyone can be considered that.

But one person who is familiar with Cowher's thinking tells me the former Pittsburgh coach cringes at the idea of working for an owner who would "show up" his current coach as some football folks believe happened Sunday.

Cowher, you see, is keeping close tabs on how the Dolphins are conducting themselves these days because he recognizes Miami is a possible landing spot. But, my source said, Cowher has apparently been disappointed in some of the things he's seen from the Dolphins as to how they treat Sparano, dating back to last year.

It's plausible if you believe Cowher wanted nothing to do with the Dolphins last year when Ross was looking around following a 7-9 season. Cowher was rumored to have told Ross he would not speak about any coaching vacancy while the Dolphins had a coach still on the job.

I cannot say that Cowher actually got that message to the Dolphins or not. But I know people close to him are convinced Cowher doesn't take kindly to other football coaches being mistreated. And, as I just said, a handful of football people who emailed me this morning thought Sparano was disrespected by Ross and Meyer.

So it's quite possible what Ross might see as harmless happenstance time spent with Meyer on Sunday might cost him a chance to land Cowher because the former Pittsburgh coach and other NFL football people have a different opinion what that time meant.

Again, the truth is the Meyer-Ross show on the sideline during the game was coincidental. But that doesn't matter to some people. They perceive that time the owner shared with a potential future coach as disrespect toward his current coach.

And, true or not, perception is reality in their minds.

Team lost on defense without their leader there from the previous seasons in crowder. I'm not surprised.

Crowder...lol...cmon man...let it go...

Maybe he'll come back to the Phins next year...

As a towel boy or something

JT needs to retire...bottom line after this year, or go play somewhere else once again if he's not satisfied with ending his career here in miami, the Dolphins finally need to move on without him and not look back at what he has done for them.

Now, if he wants to be a personal coach for next year, than Im all for it...he definately has the passion for it...

I am one for posting positive things too...

Tony, good job cutting Benny Sapp after the first game...

DC, you forgot many people! I'd like to add a few. Please add Nolan Carrol, Phillip Merling & S. Smith to the list.

superPhin: I hear you, its not like he's an "IMPACT" player anymore, but I still think he's useful and still plays at a decent level. His height can still be a problem and he's still in great shape...
I don't know, he probably has another year or two in him...
I guess I could go either way with him, but I have to say, I am satisfied with his play so far on a horrible team...

Stephan Ross,

If you want your first win. You need to add Cleo Lemon, and Greg Camarillo.

Cam Cameron

I can't sit here another year and hear the SAME LAME excuses from all the SAME players on why they're losing, sorry. I don't want to ever see Yeremiah Bell's face again. Are you kidding me? You haven't seen enough dating back to 2004 from the guy not to want to replace. I don't even care if it's an upgrade or not, but if we're gonna lose anyway, let's lose with some new faces.

Ditto JT. If you have a 36 year old OLB, YOU'RE NOT A SERIOUS TEAM!

You guys seriously need to come to grips with the fact that the long-termers on our team have NO BUSINESS STILL being on the team. They should have been cut in '08 or shortly thereafter. The fact they're STILL HERE only alludes to the fact that the GM SUCKS!

No thank you. Not sure what you guys don't understand about turn the page. But I'm serious when I mean TURN THE PAGE.

New mgmt, new Coaches, new players, h*ll, I even want new jerseys, new colors, new EVERYTHING! I can't stand to see the same old people in the same old jerseys doing the same old losing EVERY Sunday.

NEW! That's what 2012 needs to be. In every respect. NEW! At least then if we lose it'll be a true NEW team doing it.

You're right Joe, there was lots of players I missed. Those 3 would DEFINITELY go on the list.

This is the same defense minus Crowder. Say what you want about the guy, but the defense performed a lot better with him on the field. At least he provided passion.

Both these QBs suck....the teams win DESPITE these two guys not because of them. Shows it can be done if there's enough talent on the team.

Wait a moment. The claim by Craig & some others is that we DO have talent.

The statement above claims that teams with talent win in spite of poor QB play. So my question is to Craig & to others who think this team has talent.

If talented teams overcome & win in spite of poor QB play, & you claim we have talent, where are our wins?

Game, set, match.

Hey Craig M,

Remember that time you were dead on right about something?

Right, I don't either.

DC, feel free to add vernon Carey, Incognito & R. Bush.

DC, it is now safe to add K. Misi, K. Burnett, P. Soliai & K. Langford to the list.

I know this isn't realistic, but I would be happy with a whole new 53-man roster. Even if most of them were downgrades from this year.

Just give me a franchise QB, and a TOTALLY new roster. And I'll wait the 3-5 years to build the team around the QB. I'd be happy to lose a couple years in that scenario.

LOL Joe, "it is now safe..." Hysterical.

What is wrong with you? Are you some kind of mental patient or something? You bring stuff up from months ago, log in under this 'Mr Crow' lame name and have to be right on everything. Isn't it you who needs to be right on everything? You're a complete mental case!! I'll let your posts from the last few hours speak for themselves and people can form their own opinions about you.

I've brought this up to you many times....you obviously can't read!! Leave me the f*ck alone. I'm here to talk football with serious fans. You're not one!! You're a whiner and a complainer and obviously a complete nut job!! Get some help pal....soon!

Reggie Bush smashed the team after the game?

Dear nutjob/Joe/Mr Crow/whoever the f*ck you are today,

If you had bothered to read any of my previous posts about the talent level on this team, you would realize that I've said it's the coaching and the players not buying into Sparano/Henne and laying it on the line all the time. They weren't ready for this season and they're not paying the price necessary to win. They fold at the end of every game and can't make a stop when necessary. You can't name me one player on the team who is playing above his capabilities this year and that's only coaching/preparedness.

You go off on this other tangent and I have no frickin' clue what you're talking about. So talk your game, set and match, stuck it up your a** and leave me the f*ck alone, you MENTAL MIDGET!!

Here's the solution: Fire and replace legend Don Shula with Jimmy Johnson. He'll lead us to the promised land for sure. Then we can get Drew Brees as our starting QB for the next 7-8 years. Lastly, if Jimmy doesn't work out, we can bring in offensive genius Cam Cameron. I heard Ricky Williams and David Boston were also available!

Nick, Mando refuses to post that story because it would be too disrespectful to Tony Sparano.

Lets not forget, let JJ tell Marino he no longer has the ability to audible, go big with the run game, even though you don't have an established RB and be sure to draft guys like Avery...he's a sure HOF player!

The only thing JJ gave us was Zach Thomas...

But look at all we lost along the way...

The whole Shula and Marino endings are still sour in my opinion...they should celebrate the two of them every day before every game for the rest of their lives...

CraigM, the mentail patient is you. You're always wrong & act right. All the time. That's a disease.

Just like accusing me of being crow. Keep convincing yourself of it. Someday it might just come true.

Ask Armando to find out who it is. You will be shocked to learn it isn't me. I don't have the time nor desire to impersonate you.

Don't flatter yourself! Good night Mary!

Did you guys get that story on Burnett threatening a Sentinel reporter two weeks ago?

You're a d*ck!!...most of the people here know it. You're not here to talk football, you're here to start fights. You file things away in your tiny little brain until you can use it to start a new argument with people. The reality is you don't even realize it and I'm not the first to tell you this nor will I be the last. I hope you get the sh*t beat out of you at the Giants game this weekend and then we won't have to hear from you any more.

Enjoy your day sunshine!

No, didn't hear that one Nick, you have a link.

The SS is reporting Sparano pleaded for a review of the 1st TD, telling the refs, "if you don't review this, we're all (expletive). Now I'm getting fired."

Is this seriously the guy anyone wants Coaching the team?

You could also make a point and add brandon marshall to the that growing list also DC......seriously has this guy earned any part of his 50 million dollar contract since he's been here, both on and off the field.......

I dont think any fan who likes THE BEAST supposedly can say otherwise....his best days are still in denver and I have yet to see anything similair here in miami except for his dropped ball routine hes developed lately....

If we got Andrew Luck, would Joe and Craig kiss and make up?

How about this, what if Luck said he wouldn't come here UNLESS Joe and Craig kiss and make up? Would they (for the good of the team)? I'm now taking bets.

Nick M. You have to understand that the majority of Dolphins fans and Miamians in general thought the "Gator Event" was a slap in the face to #1 our Home Field and # 2 the University of Miami wich plays on this field. Ross evidently does NOT care or is insensitive to what the majority of this town feels. Why would he know? He resides in New York and only visits Miami to play with his "Dolphin Toy" The man is an Idiot. Standing next to Myer and giggling with him while his team tanked just adds more fuel to the anti Ross rage.

that mentions the burnett thing

armando better watch it

funny thing is, nothing is really made of this, but the marshall thing, the ross thing, THOSE ARE BIG DEALS

Craig M

How can you say that I go off on a tangent and that you don't know what I am talking about when I am posting your own comments? They are there in the blog history for anyone to verify.

If you don't know what you are talking about, certainly nobody else does.

I just try to point out how you constantly contradict yourself. It's odd everyone but boobyd12 see's it. He is blinded by the tailgate parties.

albert: I totally understand the gator thing, it was a lame idea to begin with...

However, Ross talking to Meyer was nothing more than being cordial I am sure and guys like the hack that writes this blog would rather fabricate to the masses than write about anything truthful.

There's only so many times you are going to read an article or blog that says "DOLPHINS SUCK"

But Ross did absolutely nothing wrong...don't believe the hype in here regarding that.

Looks like we're going to be stuck with Jones or Griffin then....LOL.

DC: Apparently the writer in question was OMAR KELLY from SS.

Haven't seen anyone consider this: The Dolphins get all their players and coaches from the Dallas Cowboys... I only makes sense that their next coach will be: Rob Ryan. You can take that to the bank, Armando. Urban Meyer is happy with his new, less pressure, TV commentator job.

BTW, I was at the game yesterday and Tebow was out of his element during 55 minutes of that game. Seriously poor coaching system for him. Once he got into the hurry-up, shotgun style of play, react on the fly, it was MAGICAL. It was the Heidi game!!! So many linear thinkers in football it's pathetic. That's why Don Shula was such a winner. Use your talent correctly.

Are there any more former Cowboys we can sign?

If the Dolphins sign one more Cowboy, in ANY capacity...

I dont like ross much as an owner and i still think he is definately the type that would stab someone in the back and smile about it later, however, if your an owner of a team, U dont have to check in with anybody about who you can or cannot talk to in your owned stadium, besides its not like sparano even cares at this point....

He pretty much knows where he's headed in due time....

I am pretty sure about Ross and Sparano. But I just cannot get away from the good players Ireland drafted this year. Might have been a fluke, but I'm not so sure about that.

Nick M. I understand your point. I truly believe Ross thinks he did nothing wrong. As you say he was being cordial. However Ross, as the owner, has to be aware and understand the situation that surrounds his coach, the angry fans and also and maybe most important the media both local and national that will take that scenario and run with it. Im sorry Ross continues to show a lack of tact and understanding.

Can we please start discussing the order of QB we will take in the next draft.

Mines is
1. Luck
2. Griffin III
3. Jones
4. Barkley (although he reminds me of Jimmy Claiusen
5. Moore
6. Weeden (He's 28 remember John Beck I think he 31 years old right now)

Did anybody see Jones play against Texas Tech? He looked like the real deal. Strong Arm and accurate has some mobility. Griffin III is such a wildcard but can be the best QB second to Luck in the class.

If Cowher is such a prima donna, then let him go somewhere else.

Exactly why is he such a good coach? He won a Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Don't all of their coaches win Super Bowls, (Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, Thomlinson) Maybe it has something more to do with the organization than with who the coach is.

In any event, forget Meyer. Not only is he a college coach, but he is also a quitter. He quit twice on the Gators and that was while he was winning. Can you imagine just how quickly he would turn tail and run once he got a taste of the NFL. It would make Nick Saban's tenure here look like he was here for 20 years.

Get lost Craig. LOL We're all tired of you telling us how right you are. We're tired of being asked for a show of hands.

Everyone, including crow, realizes what a sham you are. FYI, my neighbor sold his tickets to the Giants game so you can be sure my safety is guaranteed. Go cry now!

Funny how no one has been impersonating me, ain't it? Also amusing that you say I have may haters here. Considering how I get along with everyone here except Brabara D12(who hates everyone in the NE USA), you(who acts as if he knows everything) & odinseye(who took offense to me being critical of Henne).

You & them are alike. You act like your sh*t don't stink. Well I got news for you, IT DOES.

Buh Bye now tiny dancer.

I'm high on Jones. I know some people aren't. Obviously Luck is number one. I haven't seen enough of Griffin yet but I hear nothing but good things. Someone also told me to watchout for Wilson, who I don't enough about either. Not high on Barkley either.

dis ross spend anytime on the sideline with coach shula? does that mean we are trying to recruit him too? get out of here it is courtesy as a host to mingle with everyone coaches and players alike. you making this article is only hurting the dolphins. But the only thing i liked abou thtis article is the fact that we are interested in cowher. Say wha tyouw ill but the defense has potential. We are comfortable in the salary cap meaning we could make a move or TWO in free agency plus wehter its a the first pick or 2-4 we will have two high picks in the draft next year which will give cowher 4 solid pieces to add to what we have. offensivly we got jake long a good solid rookie rb. clay has potential gates has potential we have marshall and we have pouncey. ANYWYAS I CAN GO ON...POINT IS SHOW COWHER THE MONEY. LETS RUN THE BALL PLAY DEFENSE LET COWHER DO WHAT HE WENTS WITH ALL THE PERSONELL...HAND HIM THE KEYS LET HIM DRIVE US...WE WILL BE RESPECTABLE IN ONE YEAR AND A PLAY OFF TEAM IN TWO!!!

This is why, when fellow Dolfans ask why I'm happy when this team loses: Because Ross is not a good owner. He has brought all this upon himself. The losing will either straighten him out or force him to sell the team.

Wilson is smallish maybe he can be like a Dree Brees type of QB, he's only 6'1 not sure if he can survive an NFL beating. Moore barley can

Urban Myer is a college coach. Keep in mind that when he lost Tebow his team struggled and had an awfull season. He cannot coach in the NFL. His System is strictly college. He will fail like Steve Spurrier did with the Redskins.
Having said all that, I am sure Stephen Ross would hire him in a minute.

albert: I will say that Ross hasn't used the best judgement after the Harbaugh flop. But keep in mind, Ross was on the field to praise his team, he thought they had the win. But as usual, Sparano found a way to grab defeat from the hands of victory...
So Ross is never on the field to talk to Meyer if he wasn't going down to congratulates the Phins and Sparano for what he thought was going to be a win when he left his box to the field...
He was in fact down there as a support for the coach, staff, and players and hacks like Armando are going the other way with it...

DC, please provide an updated list of players who shouldn't be here next year.

Craig m and everyone else here a read on RG3 and what can potentially make him a top 5 pick in the NFL.

Ok, on the Ross thing once and for all...

Did he mess up last off season with the Harbaugh thing? Yes, not tactful at all...

Was he out there trying to get what he thought was the best Head Coach at the time to improve this team? ABSOLUTELY

Marshall: DID HE PONY UP FOR THE BIG WR, regardless of what some think of Marshall, Ross said go get him...

So look, Ross left things status quo when he bought the team. He knows now that the team is horrendous and will make the changes this team needs to win.

And he isn't scared to spend money to do it.

So get off the slamming of Ross, the guy hasn't really done anything, good or bad as an owner...

This off season will tell you what kind of owner the Dolphins have. And if he's good, recognize that, and if not, call him out...

But to say he's a bad owner today....I don't think there's enough of a resume to make that determination...

Nick M. Everything you said about Ross is true. But again, in my opinion, he has to be aware of circustances. It's a big sideline. If you are there to support your team and coach then stand on the sideline with them. That's what all the other owners do when they come down to celebrate what they think is a win. They stand with their team.

Seriously? A star coach? I don't want Cowher--no player has ever won a super bowl with 2 teams. Plus, he's had his fame already, and won't be very motivated. I want JEFF FISHER. He's actually a good, coach, and he's not very popular, and is hungry for a super bowl. Also, let's not get Meyer--most coaches out of college aren't very good. Look at Nick Saban!

Liam, Excellent post.

I know there is a lot of competition among the different Miami Dolphin's Blogs, for the hits and $. I don't give a crap about that. We are after the Truth. You are confusing us real Fans with your petty rivalries and you must realize that it is We, who pay your salary. Also, you must realize that in these Globalized Times, we could wipe you out with a stroke on our keyboard.

I would feel sorry for any qb that comes to this team, he will get destroyed.

The notion that coaches who have won a SB don't have the fire is ridiculous.

So, you don't think they have the fire n passion to become the first to win Championships with 2 different teams? You don't think they have that desire? Every coin has 2 sides!

By that logic, I guess if Mike Mccarthy was fired tomorrow, you wouldn't want him cause he won already? Makes sense!

Bellichek? Total Sense!

Most of the people against Cowher love Tomlin. Why? Cowhers accomplishments are brushed off as a product of a great franchise, etc..But, not Tomlin? Why is he held to another standard?

Tomlin inherited Cowhers team & won. If he became available tomorrow, by your logic, you'd say Tomlin shouldn't be a candidate because he was the product of the franchise & won a ring already?

yes, you guessed it. That logic makes ZERO sense & is as idiotic, moronic & nonsensical as it sounds.

So Cowher is on the record for saying that he wants to go to a team with the best chance of winning. Seriously guys, that's the Colts. Imagine a realistic scenario that they get Luck and have Manning. Who wouldn't want to coach that team? Ba$tards!

There hasn't been much talk of the Colts' Jim Caldwell being in the hot seat. But I'm sure Polian is thinking about it while seeing Cowher in the wings.
