Tony Sparano safe despite 'brutal' night

Tony Sparano is unlikely to be replaced this week, according to a source. And I'm starting to hate my job.

I hate that the Dolphins terrible 0-5 start is roosting directly in the doorstep of Sparano, a good man and a good coach who is not blameless for his team's record but also is not completely to blame for it either.

And so with each passing loss, the watch to determine if Sparano remains or goes grows more focused. And I am tasked with monitoring it.

And I hate it because I think a good coach is about to get whacked -- if not now, eventually, and almost certainly by the end of the season.

Monday night's loss to the Jets was especially harmful to Sparano's tenure. His team lost in horrible fashion. After a bye week. Against a team that had lost three in a row.

"Tonight was brutal," a club source told me.

And that is bad for coach because owner Stephen Ross, who last week gave him something of a midseason vote of confidence, was apparently very, very disappointed. Again. And the disappointment was augmented by the fact Ross sees it as something of another home loss because New York is his home.

"It is fair to say that the fuse is burning," the source told me.

However, the fact this is a short week, with the Dolphins returning to the field on Sunday only five days from now, makes a change significantly less likely, the source said.

So coach is safe for another week despite not being able to coax a victory from his team all season.

I know you guys don't care one way or another about Sparano because he's not a person to you. He's simply the guy you see on the sideline and the guy you see as not giving you something good to cheer about and feel good about. You transfer your frustration to him.

I get that. His team stinks. So he stinks.

But I don't believe he stinks. He's still the same guy that got the Dolphins to 11-5 in 2008. And he is a person. He has a family. And, unlike other Dolphins coaches that I believed to be somewhat inept and in need of replacing, I don't share that feeling about Sparano.

So following this story is not fun for me. Nonetheless the job will get done. That's the reason you come here.

(And now I'm sure your comments will discuss what a sap I am. So be it.)

No head coach can win games when the wide receivers can't catch. I don't see how Sparano is magically supposed to give them abilities they apparently don't possess. I do blame Sparano for the O-line, which has hovered between mediocre and awful for too long.
.
Overall, I don't know why this team can't use the talent it has, I don't know why they make the rookie mistakes they do, I don't know how a good defense can suddenly become poor. I don't see much point in dragging in a new coach now, even assuming you could find a good one who wanted the job. Equally, I don't see how this season goes anywhere but down.
.
For the future, the Dolphins need to take the best QB they can with their 1st rounder and I'd suggest that a quality RT and TE should be their 2nd and 3rd round picks. I imagine a new regime will be in place before the season ends.
.
I agree that the shrill abuse and name-calling directed at Sparano is unjustified and cowardly. Still, haters gotta hate, however much they pretend to be fans as a lame excuse.

Hrm, why can't this team properly utilize its talent? It's almost as if... the coaching staff is incompetent and doesn't know how to use the players properly? Zuhhh??

Armando,

Bravo! You are not a sap. I understand the job you have to do. I actually felt sorry for Sporano, he busts his butt, I know he gets paid handsomely, but still it is disheartening. What Ross is doing is cruel, put the man out his misery, he already knows he's not coming back.

That said, the game was there for the taking in the first half and even in the third quarter but our D-line did nothing special. The O-line protected until the 4th quarter. There is plenty of blame to go around here. The stink of Parcels and Ireland are all over the rotting ingredients that Sporano must use.

I think this is it. The players know the season is over and that there will be a regime change. Why try hard and risk an injury? Right now, all they can do is play for themselves and protect whatever career they have after the season. It's now becoming self-fulfilling.

I think the Dolphins should seriously consider someone from this board as a consultant. What would it hurt? I would do it for a Solia game worn jock strap. Man I would like to snff that.

Bringing either of those coaches in as I mentioned before, isn't immediately as "THE HEAD COACH" instead, you bring them into the fold at the front office level. Let them evaluate the team through the season, let them get their coaching staffs together, let them figure out their draft strategy, all the things they would do at seasons end, they could start today...
You'd be that much further ahead of the game and the players would understand that there will be some accountability if they dog it the rest of the season.

Salguero, sounds like your are crying for this guy on this article. His one winning season was back up by Parcells being there holding his back, ever since Parcells step off the picture his coaching has gotten worse leading up to this winless year. No one here is questioning his humanity, but we are complaining about the Football aspect not the human being. And as Football coach he is just sorry right now. Bottom line. This is football didn't he cut Crowder while his wife it's pregnant? or the coaches he has fire? It's a business and this is business. He's Got to Go!! And you can stop your crying Salguero, there will be another coach you can fall in love with I'm sure.

TO THOSE THAT NEED LINKS BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE GOOGLE...

Peterson has been a conduit for Ross stemming from their close personal relationship. It was Peterson who reached out to former Steelers coach Bill Cowher through an intermediary to gauge Cowher's interest in the job. A source confirmed a report that Cowher was interested but only if he could have total control of the football operation and pick his own general manager. Ross intends to retain Ireland as the general manager, whether or not Sparano is fired, sources said.

Peterson was the Chiefs general manager when Cowher was defensive coordinator under Marty Schottenheimer in Kansas City.

So it wasn't a face to face, it was an exploratory inquiry...

Dont forget to say thanks Mr. I am too lazy to use google...

Player need to be benched! You don't make play you sit! WR LB DL DB let the next guy have a try NOW!!!!

NOT BLAMING THE OWNER FOR TRYING TO GET HARBAUGH JUST THE WAY HE WENT ABOUT IT. I APPLAUD HIS EFFORT BUT BUT NOT HIS TACT.POINT IS NEW COACHES ARENT HIRED WHEN THE THERE IS AN EXISTING COACH IN PLACE. FIRE SPARANO FIRST AND MAYBE HARBAUGH SIGNS UP. SPARANO SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED.PLAYERS ARENT STUPID...THEY KNOW HE WILL BE GONE IN NEAR FUTURE AND ARE PLAYING LIKE IT WHICH ISNT ACCEPTABLE!

Tic toc tic toc tic toc

Tony Sporano seems like a good guy, and maybe a decent coach. But winners have great coaches. We need a guy who has both a passion for the game and a courageous heart. Gruden was getting angry at sporano for kneeling it with a minute and a half in the 2nd quarter. And I was getting pretty heated as well. Point of the matter is that Sporano doesn't have the qualities, or smarts to be a winning head coach in this league, and his so-called talent for his o-line skills aren't showing one bit. I appreciate that you have a heart for Sporano but there comes to be a time when you just have to let go of something that isn't meant to be...

I'm embarrassed to be a dolphin fan. It's completely agonizing to watch this team play. It's as if the have no shot to make something happen in key situations and no shot at stopping anything in key situations. They're never close to making a big play on d. They never lay any hits with authority.

Boo hoo, Tony Sparano. He scapegoated Paul pasqualoni and John Bonamego. Now it's his turn to get scapegoated.

ONE GOOD SEASON BECAUSE OF A HEALTHY CHAD PENNINGTON AND AN NFL RECORD FOR FEWEST TURNOVERS (THANKS TO CHAD PENNINGTON). PERIOD. Chad Pennington made Herm Edwards and Eric Mangini look like good coaches while he was healthy.

Congratulations, you guys got suckered into thinking Tony is an okay coach because of Chad Pennington, the best QB the Dolphins have had since Marino.

You're not a 'sap' at all, Salguero. You spoke the truth in those comments.

Further truth? Miami would be a winning team--NOW--if they had an answer at quarterback. The fact they don't is much less an indictment of Sparano than Parcells, Ireland, and those charged with GETTING that quarterback.

And please don't beat yourself up listening to the fans.

Sorry, guys, but in all honesty there is no dumber group of people on the planet.

You're wrong on just about everything and your 'draft analysis' is the stuff of pure comedy.

The Dolphins need change top to bottom but hopefully they'll tap into a higher IQ base than their fans (who are somewhere between 'cactus' and 'chair' on the intelligence scale)

For what it's worth, I'd like to see Fisher as the guy in charge of turning this around.

Posted by: seen more games than you | October 18, 2011 at 01:31 AM

This idiot is calling you people stupid.

Yet, he points to QB as the problem. Even though the rest of us know that Marshall, our no. 1 receiver, leads the league in drops over the past three seasons. Leads the league in drops this season and leads the league in dropped TD passes. That's not even mentioning the fact that ALL the receivers that started the game tonigh DROPPED passes-Bhwaaaaaaaaa Ha Ha!!!!

You might've seen more games than me, but you obviously weren't paying attention. Lets see Andrew Luck pass catch and block for himself, snicker, snicker.

What a DOLT-ROTFLMAO!!!!

Every day that goes by without a credible coaching replacement is another day of loss for Dolphins fans.
Why wait until the end of the season so you have to compete with other teams looking for a Head Coach? Why wait until other will compete with you for the best coaches available?
Start the interviewing now, Cowher and Fisher have available schedules to meet, so meet with them.
Gruden thank goodness just resigned with ESPN for 5 years, so he's off the table.
Go get your man Mr. Ross!

Players with heart on this team that should be kept.
Daniel Thomas
Pouncey
Wilson
Hilliard
Bess
V Davis
Fasano
J long
Those are the winners on the team a few other honorable mentions.

I wish he wasn't in over his head but he is. His commitment to Henne will cost him his job. They had a chance to move on and didn't. Simple as that. He has no confidence now and is losing his ground. Sad...but he had his chances.

Sparano is not a good coach. He may be a wonderful guy, he may be a loyal guy, he may be a great guy to have a beer with, he may be a guy you call a good friend, but a good coach he is not.

Olympia, Sporano is not innocent. He makes bad game killing calls all the time. Tonight we had time left and a time out at the end of the half. He ran the clock out instead of trying a play, I would have tried a trick play. I play a lot of Madden football as many pp here do, I know it is not the NFL but u learn good and bad plays to call in certain situations. I always though Meatball should play some Madden and he would learn how to run a game without making dumb mistakes. They always try to run up the middle on second and 5 or less, my god man, try to switch up your play calling a little.

LOSING SUCKS! THE WAY WE ARE LOSING IS PAINFUL AND AGONIZING AND IT SO FREAKIN OBVIOUS THE PLAYERS HAVE GIVEN UP ON THEIR COACH. SPARANO PRAISES CRAPPY PLAY WHEN HE SHOULD BE MAKING HEADS ROLL

4th and a half yard in Jets territory and Tony punts? He has no faith in his own offense, his own hand picked players, his own offensive calls...
But we should have faith in him?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

In the famous words of Donald Trump

"YOU'RE FIRED"

Totally agree with Botris. How can I feel bad for a dude getting millions of $ to coach an NFL team, and while at it sucking so bad. He may be a good man, bad he is a terrible coach. If I do not perform at work I get the boot and no one will care, so why would I feel bad for Sparano. He had a good, overextended stay IMO. Like Botris said this was under qualified to do the job. An OL coach who has not gotten the best -or anywhere near that- of his linemen. A dude who supported the import of rejects who never paid off. But I do agree with Mando that this is not his fault alone. Ireland is as much to blame. They both need to be fired yesterday. Marshall has to be traded, for a 2nd and 4th rounders, this could be done. It will give us more cap room and will allow a true scouting team to find gems for WRs.

Yea, it had NOTHING at ALL to do wit all the Dallas castoffs-Pfsssssssssssspt!!!!

Carpenter, Colombo, Fasano, etc etc.

Bhwaaaaaaa haaaaaaaa haaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

Another T-Choke lover obviously-ROTFLMAO!!!!

MOST OF THINK EXACTLY THE WAY WE TALK. HAVE YOU LISRENED TO SPARANO PRESS CONFERENCES?

ENOUGH SAID, THE TEAM HAS NO IDEA WHAT THEYRE DOING ON GAME DAY. THIER PLAY EXACTLY RESEMBLE SPARANO PRESS CONFERENCES.

LISTENED

Sparano: "Brandon played a great game, I'm sure a couple of those he would like to do over..."
Ahh yeah I'm sure he would! The couple that cost the team 14 points!!! Not a good game period!

I am convinced, 4th and a goal inside the 1 yard line...
Phins down by 4 with 3 seconds on the clock, Sparano would go for the fg and hope there was enough time for the onside kick.
And would fist pump when Carpenter clanged an 18 yarder off the post and it went through as time expired and the Phins lost by 1.

Just read your latest column about the sad situation of Sparano, it's really the sad state of the Dolphins....... Parcells brought Sparano to Miami, he directed him and did a fine job as they won 11 games but remember when he started the following year to hand the total reigns to Sparano, Sparano failed......Ross is the ultimate failure as he set up a bad contract with Parcells who was allowed to leave the team and still receive his contract.   Ross then fails on bringing in Harbaugh because he didn't want to give up total control with Ireland, how sad is that, total control in allowing Miami to fail, why don't you write that story?

@odinseye you are a true moron. Nothing that you stated made any sense. Of course the QB is the problem we all know that...moving on- Tony Sporano has been outcoached his entire career here in Miami. Sure the team didn't play well tonight, there was no passion or confidence- but do you know where these traits come from? THE COACH!!! Fist-Pump-Field-Goal Sporano has no Guts! He has no discipline over this team. Have you even been watching the games?

FRANK, IT WAS HUIZENGA NOT ROSS WHO GAVE PARCELLS THE HWY ROBBERY CONTRACT.

"And, unlike other Dolphins coaches that I believed to be somewhat inept and in need of replacing, I don't share that feeling about Sparano."

Armando I just noticed your quote above. Im just curious, Who were those coaches you mention above? Wanny and Scam Cam? Or was it Nick Satan?

Not a good game?

Mrshall has dropped 7, arguably 8 TD passes this season alone. In addition to the "regular" drops.

Trade him? SURE, we could probably get 5th, MAYBE a 4th at best!

That's Tony and jeffy's no. 1 WR !

That's some funny stuff, that right there!

Ouch... 0 and 5,,,Who'd of thought it???????????

On a positive note, special teams did well tonight and Fields is the MVP of this team...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't some of you complaining about poor play/coaching the SAME ones who basically want the team to lose EVERY game possible in the 'Suck for Luck' sweepstakes??

If you don't see ther absurdity of how ludicrous your position is ("I hate how bad the team is, yet I want them to lose") then you are just clueless beyond belief.

@odinseye you are an idiot. You speak of what everybody already knows you goon. Explain to me what Sporano has done to prove his spot as the dolphins head coach?

Anyone who thinks Tony Sparano is a good coach is probably not qualified to write about the NFL. He's so conservative, the Tea Party is asking him to run for President. What a joke.

You're Getting Boring,

We were looking to suck for luck, not suck because we're focked!

There's a huge difference between throwing games and actually losing them. this team is not sucking for luck. They just plain suck!

Armando, here's why I disagree with you regarding Sporano's ineptitude. You yourself questioned some of the decisions being made with regard to play-calling, personnel utilization and FA / draft acquisitions. Sure, other people are involved in those decisions, but ultimately Sporano is the one allowing it to happen, and allowing it to continue. HE is ultimately responsible for consistently running Reggie Bush between tackles rather than getting him more consistently in open space, playing Columbo rather than better alternatives, playing Carey at a position he is less comfortable with than the one he was drafted to play, not trying a 4 / 3 defense when his team can't stop the run with their current 3 / 4 defense, etc. etc. etc. The list goes on and on, and nothing ever gets resolved, even though Sporano says he knows exactly what to do. I believe in many respects, he does. He just doesn't do it.

Oh, ok...so basically you want to be the worst team in football and concurrently play a lot better.

Yeah, that makes a LOT of sense.

Jesus Christ, what a bunch of nuts.

@You're Getting Boring- Obviously we don't want the Phins to lose, it is just a joke. I mean yah suck for luck- i will be pumped if we get Andrew Luck- the bottom line is we want our team to win, but thinking of luck gets us through the night.

Funny you tube vid, ross talking to meatball. Weird but funny

24 to 9 Jets win, 3 fist pumps from Tony, A pick 6 sometime during the game, Its a mess boys.... L:ike someone once said " It's a turd sandwich and we'er all gonna have to take a bite out of it" We can only hope for better days..

Posted by: Cuban Menace | October 14, 2011 at 11:33 AM

Talk about almost nailing the score.......Do I know this team or what???Only wrong guess was 3 fist pump FG, when there was only 2, My Ba..

By the way, no one thinks you are a sap for liking Tony Sparano. We think you are stupid for thinking he is a good coach. Going 11-5 against a ludicrously easy schedule and lucking into a division title because Brady blew out his knee was not impressive. His play calling stinks, his team plays with no heart, and he seems incapable of change. Maybe he would have been a good coach in 1988 but in 2011 his entire philosophy is flawed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtoJDtU3UDs

Another funny vid on you tube. The season is over and so is the drama for me. The Dolphins are dead to me until next season.

You got one thing right,Salguero you are a total sap. Until today I had respect for your opinion and analysis, but after reading you calling Sparano a good coach you're dead to me. Are you kidding me? Every sports analyst and fan has noticed and commented on the ineptitude of this bum. What games have you been watching? Are you drugged up or something? Did you see how he was content to go into the locker room at halftime without even attempting to score with enough time left to do so? Have you noticed the lack of preparation and conditioning? If he's a good coach to you I'd like to know what your idea of a good one is. I'd like to add you to the list of people fired. I sincerely hope the Herald sends you packing. You can follow Sparano wherever he goes and shed tears for him on the way. What a douc-ebag you turned out to be. Disgusting!!!!

@You're Getting Boring- Obviously we don't want the Phins to lose, it is just a joke. I mean yah suck for luck- i will be pumped if we get Andrew Luck- the bottom line is we want our team to win, but thinking of luck gets us through the night.

=======================================

I'm calling b.s. here. You clearly DO want the team to lose. Why even pretend otherwise.

It's OK, I'm not judging you on it, but the fact you included any QUALIFIER in that dynamic means you were really NOT rooting for Miami to win that game.

You know damn well I'm right about that.

You're Getting Boring- Obviously we don't want the Phins to lose, it is just a joke. I mean yah suck for luck- i will be pumped if we get Andrew Luck- the bottom line is we want our team to win, but thinking of luck gets us through the night.

Jfan, "Fist Pumped" Pumped??????

I don't doubt that Sparano is a decent guy but no one has said that the problem with Miami is that the coach is or isn't a nice guy. Harbaugh is a bonafide jerk but his team is 5-1 and his approval rating as coach of the 49ers is through the roof.

Sparano had to know he was on a short leash entering the year and in spite of that he made at least two choices that were unequivocal nightmares.

1) He hired Brian Daboll as the OC.
2) He endorsed Marc Colombo.

Everything else aside these two choices will lead to his being fired. That doesn't even include the way he has stood behind Chad Henne when he obviously wasn't the right guy or that the O-Line as a whole has gotten progressively worse on his watch.

Sometimes bad things happen to good people.
Just ask any Dolphins fan.

Odin, Did you shoot your TV???, Did you kick Debo??, And if you did, did he bite the shyt outta you????

Haha, actually thats were your wrong. Your conversations are getting boring as you are making no points. I watch every game with the intent of wanting the Dolphins to win! I am cooped up in a college dorm where i am surrounded by Patriots, Lions, and Cowboys fans. Saying suck-for-luck is something the dolphins fans say because it is our only motivation for getting us through the season as there is hope at the end of the tunnel. (If the dolphins keep playing like this) I am a true dolphins fan- i'm starting to think you aren't though. You have no intelligence of the situation.

You're Getting Boring,

Those of us with half a brain knew before season's begin we would win 3 games tops. This team's currently making that look like an overly optimistic call.

We dont have to suck for luck we just plain suck period!

Again another year shot,my heart is sad and I dread sundays so I guess I will just go to my job and and turn on polka music.(better than listening to the game)I have never felt this bad about our fins and that sucks.Oh well go flyers.P.S please don't tell me that I have given up to early or that I am not a miami fan,I live and die in football season with them but let's face it this season is a bust.Luck may not even come out next year and ross should have stuck to what he knows best, realestate.i hate this

@ Cuban Menace- Yes! I will have Sporano over my house to watch the draft just so I can witness his fist pump as the Phins select Luck in the 1st round. lol

Yesterday, I thought I was the only poster saying 3 and 13........

This team was at rock bottom last season finishing 1-7 at home!

Cuban maybe you were. Still this team makes 3-13 seem overly optimistic!
