Sparano attempts to offer reasons for hope

It's tough being a Dolphins fan these days.

The team is winless.

The team's home field no longer offers advantage.

Players say they are monsters but play like pussy cats. Others challenge reporters to strap on pads during interviews but cannot make tackles when they count. Others are upset they are being asked to "Suck for Luck," when, in fact, no one is asking them to do anything other be themselves -- which should take care of things just fine.

And, of course, a coaching staff about to be replaced inside of two months so far has no answers for turning the thing around.

But there is hope. No, we're not back talking about Suck for Luck. If you listen to coach Tony Sparano there is a bright side to these dark days. Sparano was asked Thursday what fans -- you folks -- can dig your fingernails into and hold on to as hope.

His answer:

"Well, the only thing I can say in that situation is the team is playing hard. These guys are playing hard and they practice hard. If you want hope, I mean, they’re playing hard, they’re practicing hard, there’s improvement in different areas, there really is.

"I can point to three phases in the special teams game right now that has improved tremendously. Now the phase that we’re not quite where we want to be right now, we’re not anywhere where we want to be right now, is in the kickoff return phase. We have to be better in that because that’s going to help us finish drives better offensively. Just field position, we’re not very good in that phase right at this particular time. We got to do a better job there. But that, the defense from a run standpoint right now has gotten themselves a little bit better. We’re starting to play better there.

"Offensively we’re running the ball better and doing some different things. You’re getting bigger plays, you’re getting chunk plays. That’s all I’ve heard from three years here is trying to get the ball down field. We’re one of the top teams in the league in getting the ball down the field right now. I’d be encouraged about those things. I’d be encouraged about the players that are out there playing right now, the (Charles) Clays, the (Daniel) Thomas’, the (Mike) Pounceys, the Jimmy Wilsons. You know, the list is long, talking about a lot of young, Reshad Jones. I mean these guys are all young players right now. For me, I think those things are all really positive.

"And I think the more those guys play, the better this football teams going to get. This team is just going to continue to get better and that’s what I really believe in my heart that this thing is going to turn. I know the attitude of the people in that locker room. I’ve coached four teams here now and I love this team. I just, for whatever reason, I don’t know what it is, they just come to work every day and they go to work. I don’t know if that gives them optimism. When you’re 0-5 I understand that there’s not a lot of it but in that locker room these guys come in here and they are trying to win every single game that we play."

There.

Did that work? Feeling more hopeful, Dolphins fans?

#1.

You suck Yeah!

Yes, i'm more hopeful that with each passing day we are closer to getting the QB we need. Not sure about the rest.

H-E-L-L TO DA NO.

I CAN CARE LESS ABOUT GETTING LUCK.

I CARE MORE ABOUT GETTING A COACH.

CHAD ISN't BAD THIS COACH IS.

OH BUT LET's ALL BE HAPPY BECAUSE THEY PRACTICE HARD.

HEY ROSS: YOUR MONEY AND OUR MONEY IS PAYING FOR SOME GOOD PRACTICE.

HOW CAN YO REPLACE HIM?

HE SAID "THIS FOOTBALL TEAM IS GOING TO ONLY GET BETTER"

ARMANDO:

TO BE HONEST I WISHED YOU WOULD HAVE ASKED HIM "WELL HOW CAN IT REALLY GET ANY WORST".

THEN MAKE FUN OF HIM. BY SAYING "IN THAT WAY".

HIM AND JEFF ARE JOKES.

THEY CAME IN TOOK THAT TEAM TO THE PLAYOFFS.

THEN THEY STARTED BRINGING IN EX COWBOYS AND WE WENT DOWN FASTER THAN "KRIS" IN A DARK ALLEY.

HE SPEAKS OF OUR YOUNG PLAYERS HE BROUGHT IN.

I'M SURE THE NEXT COACH WILL THANK HIM "IN THAT WAY".

TO ROSS:

IF YOU WANT THE BEST COACH THAT's TONY DUNGY HANDS DOWN.

HIS COACHES TREE SPEAKS FOR IT SELF.

HE BUILT THE BUCS FROM SCRATCH THAT GRUDEN WON WITH.

THEN TOOK THE COLTS THERE WHEN THIER COACH AT THE TIME COULDN't.

DUNGY. DUNGY. DUNGY. DUNGY. DUNGY. DUNGY. DUNGY.

I like Tebow and want to see him succeed but I'm feeling a Miami victory this Sunday. And of course if this happens it will bring back all the Tebow nay sayers.

Justin

Did you go to school? Did they teach you what a paragraph is? You write like a laboratory animal with electric sensors on its head.

The Dolphins need to look at some recent moves and rectify some mistakes. They have a new middle linebacker and the defense went to hell. Fix it. Bring back Channing Crowder. The Dolphins hired a new pass rush coach, Bryan Cox and the pass rush went to hell. Fix it. Fire Bryan Cox. These two simple moves would bring us closer to the 7 9 team we know we can be.

Tony is trying hard. The team is trying hard. These are not jerks that don't care. They are however players & coaches & FO personel that just aren't coming together. They just aren't getting the job they are paid to do done. At year's end there will be replacements for many. I prefer DeCosta -GM and Jeff Fisher or Tony Dungy (but I preface that with the 'no coach has ever won a SB w/2 different teams' sentiment). I prefer Andrew Luck over GriffinIII or Jones. We don't WANT the Phins to lose to get Luck but its an appetizing afterthought to the futility of our Sundays. Wish you the best Tony, honestly. We just would like better.

Ok thing that makes me feel is.............
There gonna mess up our draft luck status. They will be 1-7 when they win 3 in a row pushing Indy in the winning pick.
While we get to watch with no franchise QB them Bastet ds. Will have two!!!
Makes me sick!!

The truth is the season was over before it began. The front office refused or failed to make adequate personnel decisions - adding backups and
failing to acquire NFL caliber starters.. There is hope - once this front office is cleaned out!

As phinsman said, it would be miserable to finish 3-13 and miss out on Andrew Luck. Unfortunately for Us(again? a curse?) it appears headed to No such Luck.

Ugh....I can't stand Sparano. Or this team. What a joke.

And how annoying is it that he always refers to players as plural? The Clays, the pouncey's, the Wilson's.....it sounds like a (explative)-ing game of family feud.

I think "yea" is actually DC in disguise..lol

Lets stop going to home games..that will dictate a change at the top...

Ok Tony, Thanks for the insight. However you gave us NO ANSWERS to anything as usual..Just the same ole blah blah blah. No one denies the team wants and tries to win. No one denies they might be practicing hard, however conditioning still seems to be a question mark.
I stood back, I watched, I gave this regime a chance. I did'nt call for there heads last season, I was not on the HANG HENNE parade. But enough is enough. I want my team to win. I root my team on every game. But this regime has to go..You can draft whatever QB you want, Bring in any coach you want, but as long as that, idiotic, lame brain, could'nt sniff talent if it was stuck in his asterik GM remains, it will do no good..Sparano, maybe, with a different staff, different team, maybe he will be a good coach. He's just not one now!

I have hope.
I hope they lose enough games to get a top five draft pick.
I hope they draft Luck or Jones if Luck is gone.
I hope a new coach and GM is brought in.
I hope they sign/draft RT,LG, or move Carey back to RT.
I hope they dump Marshall after this season.
I hope they get some smart WR's.
I hope they get some CB's that can cover.
I hope they can get a pass rush.

I don't understand why everybody complains about the Dolphins.

Week after week I long for as many three and outs and cheer for every non-converted third down situation to be able to see our BEST player on the Field: our punt kicker who's having an all-pro year!!!

Gee! I love my proud Dolphins!!

And just in case the playrs don't get it, NO ONE wants the DOlphins to suck. Just as you make it implicit here, they suck.

What should we fans then do? F&%%ing wait some more 11 months for us to have fun being the case that they stop sucking as they have for already 10 years?

We're not idiots, you Taylor. All of you are if you think we don't have the right o complain your lousy level. You humilliate all of us being 0-5, your mediocrity is the cause ffor all of us to be the joking objective among friends.

So, Dolphins players, don't expect us not to humilliate you: we're just universalizing your maxim.

Here's how unlucky this franchise has been:

We'll probably win 9 of our remaining 11 games and finish 9-7. Miss the playoffs and draft around 15th overall again. Hopefully Kellen Moore will still be available.

But who am I kidding, 9-2 over the remaining 11 games with Matt Moore as starting qb I must be seriously stroking myself.

Anyway, if miracuously this team finishes 9-2 over the remaining 11 games and we still get to take a qb of kellen Moore's talent. I would be very much more sympathetic to having Tony Sparano return as hc.

Now I have hope! There has just got to be some Cowboys rejects out there that can help turn this team around.

Dungy, not a bad choice. But I think he has given up coaching for good..I wish Mando would cover that subject though.
Mando cant you come up with a list of available or probable new coaches? How about a few probale GM's on that list. Get a debate going thats worth soemthing. Instead articles regarding how great of a guy Sparano is, or how he loves the practices..We know this regime is leaving (well we hope) so give us some of your best picks.

finfaneurope, Cowher and Fisher would have to be thought of as leading hc candidates right now. It's thier job to turn down.

No mention of improved QB, 3rd down efficiency, or red zone scoring....Until that improves everything else is meaningless.

Why doesn't Sparano address HOW MUCH the Dolphins have regressed from last year? Why doesn't Sparano talk about the defenses decline and inability to rush the passer?
Why doesn't Sparano talk about the red zone issues for the last THREE YEARS?

I truly feel sorry for Sparano and Know its not all his fault for the teams troubles. But just once he should speak to the fans as if we are not stupid and tell us he realizes no fan would like the way this team plays despite "the team is playing hard".

Ultimately, the fans are the ones who need to be happy with the team. They are not.

Sparano, YOU HAVE NOT LEARNED THIS YET!

Redzone issues wont be addressed until we get a "real" #1 wr and a "real" TE. Plus a qb who can throw into very tight nfl windows. Henne couldnt do it and having Brandon "Im Alergic To Redzone TD's" Marshall plus Anthony "Im Just Plain Average" Fasano, only worsened matters.

WHEN I WATCH THEM PLAY I DON'T THINK THEY ARE PLAYING HARD, MAYBE FOR THE FIRST TIME THE SEASON THE FIRST QUARTER OF THE JETS GAME BUT AS THE GAME WHEN ON THEY LAID DOWN BIG TIME , TONY IS WAY OUT OF TOUCH, BUT I GUESS HE HAS TO SAY SOMETHING.

Vikings TE Schianco becomes a ufa in 2012. We really need to make a very aggressive play at him this offseason. Then hopefully Gates can develop into a #1 wr and trade Brandon "Im Allergic To Td's Marshall.

I've seen all I want to see from Brandon Marshall. At 0-5, the primary focus should be to now develop Clyde Gates as quickly as possible. Marshall has proven his hands arent great enough to be a true #1 wr.

Neither are Marshall's smarts.

Dear Mr. Salguero

"I’ve coached four teams here now and I love this team."

I've had four other girls working the corners, but I really love these STD infested, toothless, one eyed hookers I am currently placing on the streets.

"I just, for whatever reason, I don’t know what it is, they just come to work every day and they go to work."

Dee's Bit-ches be commin to work to get paid.

Coach be pimpin

Soiled :)

Marshall will most likely have to be cut. I dont see any team taking on the huge numbers of his remaining contract no matter how low the draft pick compensation we're willing to accept.

Neither do I see Marshall restructuring his contract to make moving him more feasible. As far as td production is concerned Marshall has been a total bust in Miami. Josh McDaniels is looking like a genius now for moving him out of Denver.

Soiledbottom,

Dee's ho's be pimpin Sparano because these ho's be keeping all the money. Their yelling to Sparano "biatch better have my money"!

Sparano's a "sugar-daddy" not a "pimp".

Get Robert Griffin III. Finishing somewhere in the bottom three may just do it.

More coach speak, that is all that this is. Armando, it is time to start giving us who will be the next one up. No real Dolphin fan cares what Sparano, Irelend or anyone else on this years team says. This is a losing bunch and all of the front office people will be gone after the next 11 games so why bother listening to them talk. BTW where is Ireland during this mess??? The little man is hiding in Davie, afraid to come out and tell us why this team is falling apart. I would respect Sparano and Ireland alot more if they just stood up there and said, look we are gone soon so what do we care, hopefully this pathetic team we put together loses the next 11 games and you get Luck to enjoy for the next 15 years, that will be our legacy.

finfaneurope, Cowher and Fisher would have to be thought of as leading hc candidates right now. It's thier job to turn down.
-------------------------------------------
Would have to agree, However I do have a few question marks regarding Fisher, He did'nt realy take Tenn. anywhere. They did remain above 500, and I know he is hungry.
Cohwer would have to have the staff he wants,But more than likely (just an opinion) most of the candidates he would like are either HC's somewhere else, or are content with there current jobs.
Either way I would have to say they would top my list.

I'm feeling objective and conciliatory today. So I'm going to parse Sparano's comments as diplomatically as I can (however, just as an overall statement, NO, I DON'T FEEL BETTER!).

But, taking what he said, great, I'm thrilled we've gotten better in 3 phases of the special teams game. If that's what Sparano wants on his tombstone as HC of the Dolphins, then so be it:

Tony Sparano (2008-2011): He was an offensive line Coach, however, succeeded in improving 3 phases of the special teams game.

It's really kind of like walking past Ground Zero 9/12/2001, and remarking about how beautiful the windows are on the Chase Manhattan building a block away.

Ok, next. Chunk yards. Here, I agree with Tony. We've bemoaned the lack of chunk yards for what seems like decades. FINALLY, this year (I guess thanks to Daboll, and of course Henne) the team has entered the New World of the NFL. You can script a play to get more than 3 yards. Thank you Tony for FINALLY coming to terms with your failed philosophy and updating it to fit the times. And this is one area I do give you and the team credit for.

But then Sparano talks about the young guys, and has the NERVE to include Reshad Jones in there. Can anyone name a BIG play Jones was a part of this year? I'm not talking about a tackle (which to me isn't anything special). I'm talking about a batted ball, INT, causing a fumble, fumble recovery, blitz, etc. Jones have ANY of those in 5 games? Yeah, I didn't think so.

And this gets to why I'm not satisfied. Because everyone knows it's too little too late. Everyone KNOWS it's over. I'm happy to hear the guys are still trying hard. Because it shuts up all the idiots complaining about "Suck for Luck" when that's all a media invention (I've yet to hear ANY NFL player or Coach discuss that topic without being prompted by a reporter).

So, for EVERY poster today, THE TEAM IS TRYING HARD! Just so happens, THEIR BEST IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

And that's why Tony is a dead man walking. That's why Jeff is nervous and worried, and that's why Chad Henne and Matt Moore are looking around the NFL to see where they might land up if they aren't backing up a new QB here next year.

This is a fact that's been conceived, just has yet to be born, but in the spirit of anti-abortionists, it doesn't mean it's not STILL A FACT!

Wow. So many people think an upgrade at quarterback will fix everything. I say upfront: I am NOT a Tebow fan. I live in Ohio and I am not a religious zealot, so if he does well, great. But I am not a fan.

If Miami get's "Lucky" they better do something about that OLine. Or he will be no better than Henne or Moore.

Which leads me to my next thought...if Henne was in say, the Patriots' system, I have to think he would succeed. Not because he is also from Michigan, but because the system makes the player be able to play to their potential.

Marino would probably suck - or be average at best - in this organization...because it wouldn't cater to his strengths. It is why Shula was a great coach and Sparano is not...yet.

Shula took Marino and built the team around him, getting a pass-defending OLine and Dupers and Claytons. Sparano (Parcells) philosophy appears to be "Here's the blueprint we are going to shove up your arse and you WILL fit in it."

So for all those thinking Luck is the savior, better hope A) Sparano/Ireland vastly change the blueprint to fit him, B) They get replaced by an organization who will. Or C) Luck wears armor to protect his arse.

Chunk yardage for touchdowns, Tony....Touchdowns...Still doesn't get it.

"It's tough being a Dolphins fan these days."

Correction - it's tough being a Dolphins fan these YEARS.

Sure they play hard until they get tired & cramp up or the other team makes adjustments that somehow bewilder the team where they can't respond.

The Fins better get a strong and populare head coach or else Luck will pull an Eli manning and force a trade. Why would Luck want to play for this team with the front office such a mess? Or he could always opt to stay in school 1 more year which is very doubtful. He wont risk injury for another year plus he is losing some key starters.

2 COMBO'S THAT A 37 YEAR PHIN FAN WOULD BE PLEASE WITH

BOISE COMBO MOORE AND COACH PETERSON

LUCK AND GRUDEN

DONT SETTLE FOR LESS
ALSO BRING MARINO INTO THE FOLD AS A OFFENSIVE
QB COACH OR OFFENSIVE CO-ORDINATOR

They practice hard, maybe they should practice smart.week after week its the same problems that cause them to lose. They dont have to lose games on purpose, just keep coaching the way they do and the players play like they are an LUCK will be ours

How can a team be 1-7 after winning three in a row?

This team is officially stuck in the mire of a losing culture. No QB alone can fix that. Ross has to hire a ball-busting disciplinarian of a coach who will have the players respect from day one.

And, he will have to be capable of communicating his expectations to each and every person involved in the org. No more OJT on the fan's time & dime. We need a master, not an apprentice.

ajdczar,

Your first mistake is thinking Sparano/Ireland will be here next year. As far as Sparano, I don't know how to say it more bluntly, WHEN PIGS FLY!!! Qaddafi will resurrect from the ashes before Sparano gets another year as HC of this team. That's not even a discussion.

As far as Ireland, all the chatter coming out of Miami is that he's toast too. And even if he isn't, he won't determine the philosophy of next year's team, the new HC will. And if you believe Ross, he wants a more dynamic offense to get butts in seats. And he's the guy who will hire the next HC. So you make your assumptions based on that information (sounds to me like the days of "3-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust" are over).

Secondly, no one's saying a QB upgrade ALONE will answer all our problems. But, one IMPORTANT thing it WILL do, is answer ONE VERY BIG problem that's lasted through 16 QBs, and that at least the QB position WON'T BE THE PROBLEM.

As far as I'm concerned, if we had a situation next year like Carolina this year, where you have an amazing QB, Top 5 in the league, and are still sub .500 winning percentage, I wouldn't be mad one bit. I'd know we have something to work around, and it's just a matter of time before the rest of the team catches up.

So, I disagree. A QB upgrade will give any new HC the time he needs to develop his players, install his system, and get the team in shape to win games.

I agree Blog Fodder, I don't want a HC who the players like. I want a Tom Coughlin-type, that won't take any bull, that's all about business, that's tough as nails and tells his players they'll do it his way or can look for other work, and gets on players for being hurt, gets on players for making mental errors, BENCHES players for things other Coaches make excuses for, and break these players down like they were in basic training and rebuild them to be mentally and physically strong.

Marino would have been successful in this offense. Simple fact is the guy was a tremendous player, but also a tremendous leader.

He would've beat the snot out of the tackle that let him get continually hit (Columbo), and would demand success from his teammates.

Brady has that, Manning has that, Brees has that, Roethlisberger has that (whether you like him or not)...more than a QB, we need a field general, not a tentative yes-man.

That's what Henne and Moore, and every other QB since Marino have been lacking.

Hope for another field goal.

Hope to kick another field goal on 4th and inches from the 3yd

Hope to punt it on 4th and inches from the opponent's 41 yd line

Hope for a receiver to run out of bounds when he's not going towards the sideline and there's no one in front of him

Hope to see another scatback run right up the middle

Hope for an over rated receiver to say how easy the game is for him right before he drops another touchdown

Hope for another 2nd round pick to be a bust

Hope for another 3yd punt return from a sure handed receiver with no speed

Hope for another conservative game plan

Hope for another coach who plays it safe

Oh, and let me not forget to say thank you to Nick Saban for not signing Drew Brees when Brees wanted to be a Dolphin. Thanks for starting all this hope.

Yes, thank you Mando - that worked.

I now feel more hopeful. If the coach thinks getting better at special teams - I mean, except for kickoff returns, which somehow helps get the ball in the endzone - will lead to a single win then I feel quite hopeful that we won't win more than 2 games, if that. That will absolutely mean Sparano/Ireland will be in a different city next year and we will have a new QB at the helm next year.

I hate seeing my beloved team struggle week in and week out, but if we have to blow the whole thing up *again* at least it would be nice to have a super high draft position to rebuild with.

luck sucks ..henne iis qb we need. n all u jets fans stay on ur own site.

Im glad Tebow has the Dolphins on TV come Sunday, Sunday. But whos gonna watch? Not me, Ive got better things to do. I will watch Tampa Bay Buc's, they at least have heart and can win in the fourth qt. They got a young, go get'em coach and not some tired, old field goal, "fist pumper". Go Buc's.

I'm rooting really hard too, but that is not making much of a difference.

IF the players are all doing what they are supposed to be doine. i.e working hard, then it must be the coach right???

Replace the coach!

There's always hope- in the first half we played well enough to beat the Jets. Then there's the fact that Ireland has failed to put a good team on the field.

On the bright side, our next opponent is not trying very hard.

I'm also thinking the Phins win this week and put a big dent in Suck 4 Luck....

I love how he says, his team plays hard, and shows improvement every week.

You're 0-5 dude, there is no improvement.

I would just like to know, because I find this remarkably unbelievable. And I'd like to hear from fans who don't think QB is the top position to upgrade on this team.

How can you feel that way? SIXTEEN QBs have tried and failed! There hasn't been a steady or consistent hand at that position since DAN MARINO (who retired in '99, remember that long ago). MULTIPLE ex-Head Coaches have said one of the biggest detriments to them winning while they were here was they didn't have a good QB at the helm.

After ALL that info, ALL that history, how are some fans still not understanding that this team won't change anything until they get a franchise QB? I just want to know. Because even in the furthest recesses of my mind, I can't even fathom how someone who claims they have watched this team over the last decade+ wouldn't believe the greatest chance of improving this organization is to have a true franchise QB.

I'm just trying to understand, not trying to pick any fights. Someone help me please.
