Players should recognize they're auditioning for next administration

The Dolphins are 10 weeks from the kind of transformative change that will spin your head. There will be a new head coach. There probably will be a new personnel boss. And the players you see on your program on game days?

I would estimate that the coming change will sweep many of them out as well.

That simply is the truth of most changes in administration. The players this administration considered treasures may be trash to the next administration. I've seen it happen when Jimmy Johnson blew out Don Shula's players. I saw it when Nick Saban blew out Dave Wannstedt's players. I saw it when Randy Mueller blew out Nick Saban's players. I saw it when Bill Parcells blew out Randy Mueller's players.

Starting next January, somebody will begin blowing out Jeff Ireland and Tony Sparano's players.

(Note to the players on the current roster: This means you! And so if you're searching for motivation these next 10 weeks, consider you're on a job interview with your next boss.)

With that in mind, I want to look at at some of the players who will require decisions when the next administration takes over:

OFFENSE

QB -- Chad Henne will not be Miami's starter anymore. He's unsigned next year and might not be re-signed at all by Miami. If he is re-signed, it'll be as a backup. Matt Moore? He's signed through next year. He's got to play better the next 10 weeks to be around.

RB -- Reggie Bush is being misused by this coaching staff, which is why his production is modest at best. The next staff might decide to use him differently and make him something of a specialty player. If not, he's gone ... Daniel Thomas is a rookie who suggests better days ahead. He'll likely be around at least next year.

OL -- Marc Colombo will be gone after this year. He should never have been signed but his ties to the current administration sealed that. He's not good and the next administration will probably recognize that ... Vernon Carey is in the final year of his contract. His fate depends on who is in charge but I wouldn't bet on his return ... Center Mike Pouncey will be here for years to come ... left guard Richie Incognito will likely be here barring some unforeseen circumstances ... Jake Long will be here with the next administration and probably the one after that as well ... A new administration may be a blessing for John Jerry because the current administration sees him as something of a disappointment, depending on who's opinion you ask.

TE: Charles Clay is only a rookie and has shown a flash of talent. He's too young to discard ... Anthony Fasano is a good soldier so most administrations like that. But ultimately his playing talents will determine his fate, which I would say looks good short term but nothing beyond that. Depends on what kind of offense the next coach runs ... Jeron Mastrud and Will Yeatman are guys. Impossible to predict how much they'll improve or not or how much next coach will like or loathe them.

WRs: Brandon Marshall is an acquired taste. Yes, he's talented. But yes, he's not productive to the heights of his contract. As the next administration is not tied to the decision to bring him here for two second-round picks, getting rid of him will be easier ... Davone Bess is dropping too many passes to be totally secure beyond this season. If he steps up his game, his spot seems much more secure ... Brian Hartline is a favorite of the current administration. No idea how the next administration will feel ... Clyde Gates has not been very productive as a rookie, but most later-round rookies are not. He will likely get next training camp to show he belongs ... Same with Marlon Moore ... Roberto Wallace has to prove he's healthy, improved and among the best five or six to stick around next year.

DEFENSE

DL: Paul Soliai is expecting a big payday this offseason and I have serious doubts that payday will come from a new administration that has time to rebuild the entire team through the draft and won't be held hostage on money matters. So I'd say it's 60-40 against him returning under a new administration ... Jared Odrick is a young guy and relatively productive as a bacup so he's back ... Randy Starks is signed through 2012 so he's likely back ... Phillip Merling is unsigned and unproductive so he is gone ... The plan of this administration was to re-sign Kendall Langford but then the season began, the team stunk and owner Stephen Ross put the stop sign up on re-signing players that are only borderline productive. Langford has his best game Sunday, if he has 10 more like that he comes back. If he doesn't, his chances of returning are 50-50, depending on who is making the call ... Tony McDaniel is signed through 2012. He's not great and not terrible. He's a role player and so he's got a role player's chances of returning ... Igor Olshansky is unsigned after the season so his chances of returning are 50-50 at best. I do like him at the right price, but I can confirm I will not be running the team next year.

LBs: Jason Taylor is playing his final year with the Dolphins and likely his final year overall. A new administration is unlikely to bring back a 38-year-old player to start a new tenure in a new town ... Cameron Wake is signed through 2012 so he'll be back ... Karlos Dansby had perhaps his best game on Sunday. He's excellent against a downhill running offense. He's signed through 2014 so no use making an extra hole to fill when you've got a pretty solid player in the spot already ... Kevin Burnett is a curious guy. He's hurt the team more than he's helped. No idea what the next administration will decide there. He's obviously not a slam dunk to keep ... Koa Misi will likely be back, but unless his production increases, he cannot be assured that he would start for the next coach and general manager. Their commitment to him won't be like the current coach and GM ... Jason Trusnik is a role player. He's neither an absolute keeper or guy one gets rid of.

DBs: Please use your heads and not your hearts here. Don't shout kill Sean Smith or dump Vontae Davis just because ... Both are signed for next year. Both are young. Both will be back. But both will have to compete in training camp because I expect the next administration to look at CB as a need ... Both safeties are in the same boat. Strong safety Yeremiah Bell is starting to get up there in age. The free safety spot is probably the second-highest need on the team behind QB. This defense does not have a playmaker in the secondary. The free safety as that guy is a blessing -- just look at the teams like Pittsburgh and Baltimore for proof ... Jimmy Wilson is getting better and will be back no matter who the coach is, assuming he keeps his nose clean ... Nolan Carroll will have to win a job next preseason.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Kicker/Punter/LS/RET: Brandon Field might be in the Top 3 in the league and definitely in the Top 5 ... He'll be back ... Dan Carpenter is solid but I wouldn't be surprised if the next administration will bring competition to camp for him ... John Denney is still excellent, but just as he surprised Ed Perry many years ago under a new coach, he has to be vigilant to falling to a similar situation based on his salary ... The Dolphins will be searching for returners in 2012.

First - Woo Hoo!!

Sean Smith has been getting abused!

Good Article, Armando you think you could do some investigative work and quite a small blog on what would happen if both Miami and Indianapolis have the same final record??

Does anyone else suspect that a 3-4 may be the reason for the struggles of the Saban/Cameron/Sparano era?

It seems that this big-bodied defense cannot (especially in the 4th qtr) run with offenses in the high heat/humidity climate of Miami...run straight at them, it's a wall, but around them is another story...

This defense was stellar the years of our quick, undersized D with Zach, Jason, Sam, Pat, Brock...

With an exception of a few players, it would be a simple transition back to a 4-3 (Wake to DE, Starks/Odrick to DT)...

When Johnson/Wannstedt/Parcells were here, they brought a "play in the cold of the playoffs" mentality to Florida. Pittsburgh, N.E. of years past, and Baltimore are the most successful big-bodied defensive teams--all northern teams...shouldn't you aspire to play at home in the playoffs???

...anyone else?

I meant write a small blog, stupid spell check..

Hey Tony, Don't let the door hit you in the --- on the way out!

And so the coaching carousel continues with the Miami Dolphins.

Will it be like this for all eternity?

When we settle on the Moon, will the Lunar Leopards drop in on Sunday to beat the Dolphins' butts?

When we colonize Mars, will the Martian Greenskins travel to Earth to kick the Dolphins' assses?

Maybe we should just get a computer to call the plays on offense and dial up the plays on defense!!

Sniglets... I call shanannagans! I don't care what has to happen..I want my real Miami Dolphins back!

Every year we wait with anticipation for...Aprils draft. I am quite sick of that.

Funny, I scream for the coaches head, but Ireland signed and picked a lot of acorns that will never be an oak.

What bugs me most is that players will leave, sign with New England or the Jets and kick out butts next year. Henne will come back to haunt us. And we will find out, that is wasn't him but players around him or the coach or the heat.

I do think that Steve is right. Big guys wilt in the 4th in Miami. 290 lbs and under for the d line. 240 for linebackers. No bigger.

To bgballer40, The Herald reported last week that if Miami and Indy finish tied (or if Miami and St. Louis finish tied), the No. 1 pick would go to the team whose opponents have the worse record. Look up the story last Wednesday or Thursday on quarterbacks available in the draft. It's in that story, I believe.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2LNHkbTExw

I have to say it, bye bye bye Tony and Ireland and Dee. Flush the orange toilet. We all know it is time. Even Hitler knows, below is his reaction to 0-5. its pretty funny, meant for humor. Time for the dolphins rebirth, we need an abortion from Sporano first...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpQOia_8OWU

Good Article. Definately agree. Miami has a lot of needs. With a little tweaking, the defense could be a top 10 again. I wonder if soliai has trade value? Would the next coach go to a 4 - 3 defense? I doubt Marshall has any trade value.

Bad article....

The players should be motivated by thier PAYCHECKS....not the CHANCE to defraud another FO.....

As far as i'm concerned....everyone should be open to trade....NO ONE should be off the table....NO ONE.....Not even my man-crush..Marshall....

Well it will be easy to blow off the Parcells, Ireland, Sparano players. What's up with not bringing in a tight end or keeping an inept right tackle this season..................... Sparano-Colombo-Fasano, they are a family and are sure to leave as a family.

KRIS:

I KNEW YOU WOULD HAVE SOMETHING NICE TO SAY.

YEAH YOU ARE RIGHT. PAYTON DRAFTED IN 98. UMM

DUNGY GOES THERE IN 01 OR 02.

THEY HAVE BEEN WINNING SINCE.

TAMPA BAY.

THEY WERE THE LAUGHING STOCK OF THE NFL SINCE LET's SAY 1980.

TWO YEARS AFTER DUNGY GETS THERE THEY WERE PLAYING FOR THE PLAYOFFS.

THE NEXT TWO YEARS THEY WERE IN THE PLAYOFFS.

WHY WOULD I WANT TO FIGHT A GIRL.

MAYBE YOUR HUSBAND BOYFRIEND BROTHER.

NAH I DON'T FIGHT ANY MORE.

BUT I DO MISS IT.

POINT IS DUNGY's A BETTER CHOICE

WE SHOULD TRADE KRIS FOR NAVEL LINT.

At what point do you good folks come to realize that it isn't the players that is the problem with the Dolphins, it is you!

The Dolphins are already homeless, both sets of lame ass fans (Dade/Broward) have disowned the team, that's why they did better on the road.

Time for Miami to cut the cord and let the Dolphins go to a place where they will be appreciated by the fans, citizens and media.

Perhaps Armando they will let you cover the Heat when the Dolphins are moved to another city.

Luck will NEVER play for the Dolphins. Get used to that idea. For as long as the Dolphins are still in this lame city, they will NEVER attract a top talent like Luck. A/C repair isn't in that dudes future plans.

5 million to Reggie Bush? This front office needs to get off the GLUE and out of politics. If Ireland Ross and Dee want to play in politics they should go do that and get out of football.

SLART:

GREAT POINTS BUT MOST OF THEM UP HERE ARE DEAF.

THEY're STILL LIVING IN THE PAST.

THERE ARE VERY FEW UP HERE THAT SUPPORTS THE TEAM AND THOSE WHO DO LIVE IN OTHER STATES.

BUT I THINK THE TEAM IS OK.

I NEVER SAID SUCK FOR LUCK.

BUT I DID SHOUT SPARANO CAN GO.

this is all BS ... I think the Dolphins dumped, I think they dumped the draft and this last game because there are shenanigan being waged in the NFL. We pass on Demarco Murray, beasst from Oklahoma for Thomas, We pass on Ryan Mallet, a 1st round talent that slipped a la Marino, for Thomas. Daniel Thomas better wind up an all pro or this administration runs the risk of being a minor league squad. Did Walden get 'called up' to the majors to play for Green Bay, a real football market? I think when Aaron Rodgers puts on the wrestling belt what he is really saying is that NFL football is FAKE! I think this is all BS and shenanigans for cash.

NFL FOOTBALL IS FAKE LIKE WRESTLING. ITS ALL BS!

ANDREW LUCK WILL NEVER PLAY FOR THE MINOR LEAGUE MIAMI DOLPHINS. GET USED TO IT. LUCK IS NEVER COMING TO THIS SECOND RATE CITY. NO WAY.

GET THE HELL OUT OF OUR TOWN, DOLPHINS ! THIS IS HURRICANE COUNTRY !

what was the line for miami v. denver? was miami favored? what were the odds on Tebow getting his first start and win in the same game? Matt Moore held the ball a little too long on that last play, was that on purpose? How can one make money thru losing in the league besides from their pay checks? I wonder ...

Right on Only Canes! Teach them a lesson for soiling our UM home field with UF gators of all god awful things...

NO one is safe.......0-6

parcells bolted but convinced ross to keep his buddys, ireland and sparano. they needed to go with parcells, which many of us screamed at that time.

GREAT article Armando. It really reveals maybe the biggest of the MANY problems this organization faces. It is so low on talent that 0-6 is not a complete surprise. It is hard to find more than 3 or 4 guys that would start or be major contributors on most other teams in the league.

THEY HAVE TO CHANGE A LOT OF THE PLAYERS JUST BECAUSE YOU DO NOT SEE THE EFFORT, THAT WE SAW LAST YEAR ESPECIALLY ON DEFENSE, I DO NOT THINK TONY IS A GOOD COACH OR ANYTHING BUT EFFORT IS SOMETHING YOU SHOULD GIVE ALL THE TIME AND ALSO, WHEN YOU WATCH THEM PLAY THERE CLEARLY NOT ENOUGH TALENT ON THE TEAM, REALLY ON EITHER SIDE OF THE BALL, BUT WITH THE RIGHT COACH AND GM WE MAY BE ABLE TO TURN THINGS AROUND PRETTY QUICK, I WOULD TRADE MARSHALL IF YOU COULD FIND SOMEONE TO TAKE , HE IS NOT TEAM PLAYER, OR AN ELITE PLAYER LIKE WE THOUGH WE WERE GETTING.

yesterday i wrote that sparano was lying when he said he knew tebow was going to run it in for the 2 pts. i said that wasnt true because his big bodys werent on the field(soliai, starks, langford) and the fins were in "nickel" which was useless. now fins players have confirmed what i said. mcdaniel has said they were in the wrong defense. everyone in the stadium knew tebow would run it in EXCEPT SPARANO!

How do expect fans to stay loyal, and root for a team that gets worse week by week? Don't the fans deserve more? I think Sunday was the final straw. What an embarassment losing a game like that.

Yuuuuuuuuup. Worst franchise in the NFL. Good luck finding someone legit who is going to want to work for mr. "Orange carpet, celebrity owner, club in stadium, gator day, Henne is better than Marino, dissing HC on national TV" Ross.

When Ross dies you will have a shot again.

JUSTIN....yOU REALLY SHOULD HAVE LEFT well enough alone...You really should have left it on the last blog....especially considering you felt the need to include me inone of your MORONIC post first...

but.....

If you LIKE looking like an @ss....then I LOVE making you look like an @ss....

Here we go....

1. Tony Dungy came to the colts in 2002....(its easy to find)....

2. Manning was drafted in 1998...the Colts finish...3-13 in his ROOKIE SEASON....however...In his rookie season, he passed for 3,739 yards with 26 touchdowns, set five different NFL rookie records, including most touchdown passes in a season, and was named to the NFL All-Rookie First Team....

3. In 1999...his second season (for those counting....The Peyton Manning led Colts finished 13–3 and the AFC East champions. The 10 game turnaround from the previous year set an NFL record...BTW...MANNING went to his 1st of MANY Pro Bowls.....No Tony Dungy yet....

4. 2000....Manning finishes 10-6 2nd consecutive trip to the PLAYOFFS....and 2nd staight PRO-BOWL....You herd of the play-offs right....

5. in 2001....Manning finished 6-10...and STILL went to his 3rd straight PRO BOWL.....

6. Enter Dungy in 2002....10-6....back in the playoffs....

and son on and so forth until until 2006....when Manning won the Super Bowl....

and while I will not discount totally discount Dungy....I will still give Manning 95% of the credit....

Why......

Because after Dungy Retired....Manning went back to the Super Bowl in 2009.....

and in 2010....he was still went to the playoffs.....

and the best evidence of all.....

the 2011 COLTS.....NEED I SAY MORE.....

JUTIN....

Who do you think the COLTS miss more...

The QB play of LEADERSHIP and QB play of Manning....

Or the COACHING of Dungy......

Patiently awating your answer.....

Let's not forget, there's something else that needs to go along with the regime and under-performers...
The air conditioned practice dome!
Since it's been in use, the Dolphins have looked weaker than all opposing teams in the heat. It's been sickening actually to watch them sucking for air on the home field sidelines.
Go back to practicing HARD in the heat, and the team will be in tip-top shape again.

BOO-YAA!!! Did you see that Justin...THAT JUST HAPPENED!

TKO KRIS!

Don't forget to get your Tony Sparano ( Fist Pumper )commemorative bobble head. It has a real fist pumper motion and comes with a little field goal to make Tony happy. Or you can waite for the boxed set of Jimmy Johnson, comes with a little can of hair spray and bottle of prozac. Dave Wannstedt comes with a little lobster trap. Cam Cameron comes with a little Ted Ginn is a Miami Dolphin teddy bear. And Nick Saban comes with the bubble dome and match box moving truck.

While kris is waiting for that answer, I'm waiting for someone to tell me how we won't be picking #1 in the Draft (unless you believe we'll lose in strength of schedule).

But I want an answer from someone that thinks we'll win more games than another team this year. Really? What game, describe how we'll win it? I really gotta hear this. Let me put my slippers on so someone can tell me a wonderful bedtime fantasy story. On how Matt Moore and this atrocious defense that couldn't even beat a guy that can't throw an accurate pass over 5 yards after being up 15-0 for FIFTY-FIVE MINUTES, will actually be able to beat the Giants (who score TDs), KC (getting better), Skins (Beck's revenge), Bills (will crush us twice, along with the other division games we'll lose), Raiders (with Palmer fully involved), Cowboys, Eagles (2 home losses, YAY!).

I'm waiting for some creative mind, make me believe.

You know who's licking his chops right now, Mueller. He got canned day after the last game, in an embarrassing and cold fashion, they showed him leaving the stadium in shame.

He CAN'T WAIT for the end of the Season when Ireland and Sparano will be frogmarched from the stadium. S FLA fans, is tarring and feathering legal in Florida? Just wondering.

C'mon people. Still waiting for my story. I've got my hot cocoa right here.

Bess has had his fair share of drops lately as well. I'm starting to believe he & Marshall are simply in a funk. Bess was barely in the game plan the first 4 weeks.

Disfunctional franchise, QB questions, coaching questions, etc etc etc...I think these professionals are allowing the forces outside of what they can control start impacting their play on game days.

Same can be said for other players as well.

DC, we'll be in the running for #1 all year. The Rams play the Seahawks & Cardinals twice. I'm sure they get at least 2 wins. By the same token, the Caridnals & Seahawks play again so 1 of them will get another w.

The Jags shocked the Ravens last night so they're 2 up on us. But they also improve Indy's strength of schdule, doesn't make them as soft. That also helps Miami's cause.

Ponder looked pretty legit on Sunday so I think he gives Min a shot to win every week.

The real struggle will be with the Colts. Not sure if we get the #1 overall or not, I think we'll clearly be in the top 2-3.

Being that the Colts made the playoffs last year, they should have had the harder schedule going into the year. Not sure how it will turn out now.

What ultimately hurts Miami in the strength of schedule tie breaker scenario is the Bills winning as many games as they already have.

Joe, do you see us winning at least 1 game this Season, or going 0-16?

nflx is down 45 dollars TO 74 DOLLARS

Franchise QB's are like woman with big boobs, they hide alot of other flaws.

Steve of PA: "Does anyone else suspect that a 3-4 may be the reason for the struggles of the Saban/Cameron/Sparano era?"

I couldn't agree more!

This is why JT's role resulted in decreased sacks and tight ends killing miami for years...

I work in a building of 3,000+ people. Many know I am a diehard Dolphins fan. The last couple of weeks, I can't WALK ANYWHERE without someone stopping me in the hall saying how sorry they are about my team. They look at me like a homeless kid, like they want to throw me a buck or something.

It's totally embarrassing. Here I am, trying to project testosterone and manliness, and I have to be the face of the franchise to all these people.

Ross OWES ME BIG! I think Andrew Luck should just about cover the debt!

DC, looking at it a couple of weeks ago, the only real potential wins I saw were against Denver & KC. KC looks much improved from earlier in the season. Denver, oh well.

At this rate, since they are floundering, maybe the Skins can be a win. Not much else....

Ok DC get Cumfy in those slippers. Get some warm milk too!

It is late December, and snowing in Patriot land. The Pats have home field locked throughout the playoffs. They decide to sit all their starters because there is ice all over the field and it is snowing like crazy.

Miami is licking their chops, thinking YES, we may get our 1 win this season.

BUT then Mallett takes the field -- ah crap it will be a Mallett revenge game. Nevermind, we'll go 0 and 16. So there will be a happy ending...hahaha

Truthfully I would say the redskins will be the best chance foe 1 win this season but I feel like whomever is QB then will get pummeled by Orakpo and co.

I pretty much agreed with everything you said Mando. I do belive bess and hartline will be back. I doubt marshall will be here.
I also think unless they draft a QB high in the first round they should either re-sign Henne or sign matt flynn as a FA.

Dolfan,

Good analogy with the franchise QB and women with big boob hiding flaws, Im always thinking about boobs. DC I as well work in an office that everyone knows Im a Dol-fan. I too get the snickers and giggles at me every Monday I get in.Better days are ahead...

Matter a fact, I'm about to take down this Dolphin poster in my cubicale, its embarassing.

LOL Texas @ 9:24. You got me, I was all waiting for you to tell me it was gonna be a win.

DKM, well ahead of you bro, ripped down my helmet poster after the Cleveland game (that was the clincher for me).

Charles Clay is a "football player."

#54.

Nobody on this current roster should be here by the start of the 2013 season. By the start of the 2012 season would be ideal, but that's not realistic. Eff them all. They're all worthless, gutless, heartless pathetic disgraces, as athletes and as people. I wish them nothing but the worst.

What changes lie ahead for this team? Well, first of all, I will be taking over as the new GM. As the new GM i will be instituting the following changes:

1. Brandon Marshall will be traded. I will be seeking a 2nd rd pick for him and may not be able to get it. However, I will take no less than a 3rd and a 4th. I like Brandon, I really do. He's got a ton of talent. The only problem is I don't have time to deal with his issues. I need to get this team back on track as quickly as possible and that means I need to get something for him. I want a 2nd rd pick but I will settle for a 3rd and a 4th. I have something in mind for those two picks if I can't get a 2nd round pick for him.

2. Davone Bess is one of the best possession receivers in the league. That is, when he can get off the line of scrimmage. I'm also looking to trade him for another draft pick. I feel I should be able to get at least a 3rd round pick for him. So, after trading Marshall and Bess I should have two 2nd round picks and two 3rd round picks or three 3rd round picks and two 4th round picks. Remember, I have something in mind for all of these picks.

3. If the team does get the first pick in the draft I promise Miami fans I will not try and get creative by trading it away for more future first and second round picks. I will draft Andrew Luck and he will come to play for me in Miami. I promise.

4. Mark Colombo will be looking for a new home after this season. I have no tolerance for players who do not want to do the job they are getting paid to do. With that said I will:

5. Trade Sean Smith. What will I get for him? Well, after last year I would have been in a better position in a trade but after this year's performance his stock has dropped and it will be difficult to get anything higher than a 3rd round pick for him. However, a 4th round pick may be something I may need to settle for.

This is just the beginning. There are more changes to come and I will continue with additional posts.
