Looking ahead to the Bills who may or may not stink

The Buffalo Bills, the next opponent for the Dolphins, have hit an interesting point in their season.

After starting out an inspired 4-1 and leading the AFC East, the Bills have, shall we say, hit a rough patch of late. No, check that. If "of late" is defined as yesterday, the Bill have stunk. They lost 44-7 to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

It was their third loss in four weeks. It was their third loss in four road games.

Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw three interceptions including one that was returned for a TD. Running back Fred Jackson also had a fumble that turned the ball over. The 37-point loss was the worst of the season, surpassing a 16-point loss only one week earlier.

So the Bills are not just going badly but getting worse.

That, of course, only matters if you adhere to the facts.

"Listen, I think Buffalo has been playing really well," Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said moments ago. "I don't think because of what happened yesterday, you can look at any of that. The bottom line is just looking at the game, I haven't watched it yet, but it appears to me that turnovers had an awful lot to do with it.

"It seemed like they had three or four turnovers in the game."

Yes, the Bills had four turnovers. That is playing poorly in my estimation. That is not playing really well.

Anyway, the Bills are beat up, having lost key contributors at WR, OLB and DL in recent weeks. The Dolphins are 2 1/2 point faves.

The Dolphins, winners of two straight, are also playing well -- except that the facts actually back up that stance.

2 watt, we've had more than our fair share of injuries too. Who got injured for buffalo? I think Kyle Williams and sure that's a big loss but who else? Merriman? That juiced up freak has rendered his muscles and joints so brittle with drug abuse that he will never be healthy again.

Well, it goes without saying that there has to be no doubt that he would need a clean bill of health. Now hopefully the team has new doctors. Not the same ones who thought culpeppers knee was healed and not brees' shoulder.

I can see peyton in Washington.

DC,

The defense is beginning to play its best vall of the season. Though I would like to see the secondary as whole step up to the same level that our front 7 has. Hopefully Vonte Davis' pick Sunday is the spark that begin a secondary fire.

On offense, Columbo still has his well known problem with speed rushers. The fewer 2nd and 3rd and longs we have the more that can ve covered up. The oline's been run blocking well but it could be better.

Big kudos to Matt Moore. When was the last time we saw a fins qb lead a game sealing late 4th qtr scoring drive when the game was still in doubt? It wasnt with Henne.

Have we ever seen Henne bounce back from a poor 1st half performance with an above average 2nd half performance? No! Moore's 1st half qb rating was 47.3, he bounced back to jack his qb rating to over 70 to finish the game. Im not ready to declare Moore our franchise qb, still the last few games he's given us all encouraging enough signs to sprout even the smallest of optimism.

Mark, I hope that doctor that was working for Saban got fired...Man, talk about screwing up...

In terms of starters, the Bills have lost Wood, Merriman, Williams and Parrish for the year. Easley is out but I am not sure whether he would have started or how much he would have played. Kelsay, Bell, Hairston, McGee, and A. Williams have missed signifant time.

.

Peyton in Miami, oh God no. Not enough of a stretch. Let's go after Culpepper after coming off a leg injury. Let's stretch for Pat White in the 2nd round. Let's entertain bringing in Orton.

But a proven SB winner? Elite franchise QB? Why would we even think about bringing him here? That makes too much sense for our organization. We'd rather do it the hard way.

yesterday's gone, our secondary is still awful. Don't get fooled by the last 2 games. These guys can't cover. The reason we're having a bit more success of late is because we're putting more pressure on the QB and the play of our linebackers. That's it. Secondary is a MAJOR AREA OF NEED this offseason.

Fin fans, I'm not really seeing the Andy Reid coach thing for the Fins. We shuld, culda and wuld had Harbough but noooooooooooooo, we have an idiot for an owner. Every time I see SFran I think, yeah, that coulda been our coach darn it! Nice one Ross... I expect we'll be disappointed again with your coaching hire and only until you sell the team will we be taken seriously.

Good morning guys,

Forget the Andrew Luck sweepstakes at this point Miami might end up out of the Barkley and Jones sweepstakes as well.

Don't get me wrong it's nice to see Miami winning but not for the sake of not getting a franchise QB. Miami might play themselves right out of the top 5 at this point. I'm not drinking the Kool-aid guys. I would rather keep losing. So Miami might finish up with 4 or 5 wins where does that get you?

Neck injury mend or not, at 35yrs old Peyton has 3 great seasons left max. Even Favre begin to seriously decline at 38yrs old.

He played for the Jets and Vikes. He couldnt get the Jets to a playoff and was beaten down like a red headed stepchild in his only playoff appearance with the Vikes.

With at most 3 great seasons left, Manning would cost about $30 million a year. At that price, plus whatever we have to give up in draft pick compensation. We need Peyton to win 2 SB's in 3yrs. He only won 1 SB in so far 13 seasons as a Colt. So do the math.

DC, the only concern I have about Peyton is health related, not abilities.

#1, spot on. Our secondary is as bad as it's ever been. These guys cannot cover. Every week it seems like it's a drill in practice where they're working on their trail technique.

Every WR & TE is wide open. No balls are contested. Our DB's can't even get close enough to draw penalties! That's how bad it is.

...I mentioned this last week. The defensive line has been playing at a much higher level. There is a connection between why the linebackers have been playing better...Dansby, and Burnett do not have a chance to make plays if the interior line isn't holding off the offensive line.. Well done group!

The difference between Buffalo and KC/Washington is the Bills at least have the capability of putting up points. Beats me whether or not they will on Sunday. And they're desperate for a win to stay in the playoff hunt. The Fins may be fat and happy now that they got both the first win and first home win off their backs. I don't see how we get our third win this week.

Matt Flynn? What do the Packers want for him, a 6th rd'er?

Guys we just signed a backup qb this offseason, Matt Moore. So what are we running now, a system that starts the best backup qb on the team? Have you guys not learned your lesson from AJ Feeley?

Comparing Feeley, who cost a 2nd rd pick, to a hypothetical 6th round pick for Flynn is not a good comparison to make.

A 2nd round pick would likely start or have a decent role on a team. a 6th rounder would be lucky to wind up a ST/Practice squad player. More likely, not even make the team.

ANYthing is still possible. We have not been mathematically eliminated from the Playoffs.

Some of you need your brain radiator water levels checked. Matt Cassell is an above average nfl qb. A huge upgrade to Chad Henne. We held him and the Chiefs offense td-less simply because the defense continually came up with nice pass pressure when it mattered most.

Give Cassell time and he'll carve up the best nfl defenses. It blows my mind how some discount our defensive effort when they held Matt Cassell and the KC offense td-less.

..Miami 2 and a half point Favorites at home. Pretty good value on Buffalo here since the home team isn't even laying 3 points(standard in a game where teams may be considered even) It's funny how a bad team that wins 2 games in a row is considered "even" with a pretty good team that has lost 2 straight. If I was betting this game this week. You have to play Buffalo.

I play to Win. Always.

Joe Shmoe,

Hypothetically Im saying that's all Feely was worth(6th rd'er). I know some here may think Flynn maybe worth a 2nd rd'er too. I just hate to see this team make the same mistake(Feeley) giving up a 2nd rd'er for a guy who produces 6th rd'er results(Flynn).

Flynn has a national championship with LSU. He wasnt a primary reason they won it. LSU won that championship on the backs of suffocating defense and a high level run game.

I consider Flynn average at best until the opportunity arises for him to prove otherwise.

I'm not saying I know one way or the other if Flynn is the real deal. I've seen him the same as you guys in a few games last year and at lsu. I just know that I'd feel better rolling the dice with Flynn for a few years if we miss on the top 3 or 44 qbs and peyton doesn't leave Indy and matt Moore falls short of doing his best rich gannon impersonation for the rest of the year. Just another option. Another thing to consider.

You guys think the draft order is certain. We can fall behind Indy, kc, Seattle, and Washington ... all that would be or should be in the qb market. There will certainly be a run on qbs in the top 10. And there's Cleveland too. There's trade up scenarios with these teams. It will be very competitive for these draft eligible qbs. And god forbid one or more of them don't declare.

yesterday's gone, I'm very satisfied with the play of our d-line and linebackers the last couple of games...But I can't say the same about our secondary, Cassel or not. WR's are still way too open for my liking. I would like the Dolphins to get a playmaker at the free safety position and a shutdown corner. 2 major needs imo...

ANYthing is still possible. We have not been mathematically eliminated from the Playoffs.

Way to go out on a limb.

DD,

We're 2.5 point favorites because the Bills laid 45-7 flat out stinker performance against Dallas Sunday. Not because they lost 2 in a row.

I guarantee you had the Bills lost by 10pts or less against Dallas we would not be favored right now.

Flynn is worth a 6th rounder and cassel is an above average qb? Cassel stinks, kc is worse than Miami in pass offense 28th overall. In a weaker division.

I play to Win. Always.

Posted by: oscar canosa | November 15, 2011 at 11:41 AM

If you play to win, you should realize the odds of Miami making the playoffs are 10,000 to 1, and bet against it.

#1,

I posted I hope Vonte's return and the pick he had his first game back sparks enough spark to start a fire with our porous secondary.

Mark T,

Put it this way, given a choice, I would chose Cassell over Henne every single time.

While not technically, mathematically eliminated from the playoffs....c'mon, it's not going to happen. Even if we run the table and finish 9-7, it isn't going to happen.

I actually believe there will be TWO 9-7 AFC teams that make the playoffs this year, but Miami won't be one of them. They will be the division winners of the AFC South (Houston or Tenn) and West (Raiders or Chargers). 9-7 isn't going to win the division in the AFC East....sorry, I just don't see an all out collapse of the Pats and I still have the Jets going 9-7 this season (out of playoffs due to AFC North wild cards). I also don't believe the Phins can run the table.

After that, you have to take into account the AFC North...I think the Steelers take this, but it's quite possible that the AFC North ends up with TWO of the wild card slots as well when you consider the records of Baltimore and Cinci.

Moral of the story, it isn't going to happen.

yg, I agree with kingsford as far as when we played him. Cassell has been banged up this year. Plus his best weapon got hurt early. They didn't win last year with Cassell being the driving force of that offense. They had the best run game in the NFL.

This year, Cassell, being banged up, has been asked to do much more. And his oline isn't that good.

So, no, I don't really give our defense much credit for stopping Cassell. Being held without a TD, yeah, that's all well and good, but does it overshadow the fact that the week before they allowed Tim Tebow to score 15 points in a few minutes? To me, NOPE!

Does it overshadow them letting Colt McCoy lead a game winning drive? NOPE!

If you're saying the defense is playing better, I agree.

If you're saying the defense has any chance to be the Top 5 defense many of us thought we'd see this year, well, cancel Xmas because that shipped sailed in like Week 2.

I'm interested in Matt Flynn, but NEVER did I say I would give up a second round pick for him. I thought he was a free agent. We have so many needs on our roster...Trading draft picks wouldn't make any sense.

Yg...It doesn't matter why we are favored. I'm just looking for the smart play. Taking Miami, and giving the points is not a prudent move. We suck against the spread at home(I know the Phins covered last week, if you want to bet them..cool). Buffalo has more ways to beat us then we have answers for stopping them. The game Vs KC was a fluke offensivley. How many times have we scored 28 points the last 2 years? So in my mind Even if we are close in this game, it isn't unreasonable to think the game would come down to a field goal. If the game isn't close..I would imagine that it would not be in our favor.

Flynn is unrestricted next year. I still think we keep moore and draft a QB in the top 10. Forget about Flynn. he'll be asking too much and I'm afraid of a west coast offense QB to come in miami unless we hire a west coast offense type coach. Look at kolb.

KC sucked so bad and is so lousy taht they won the Afc West division crown with Matt Cassell as starting qb last season. Guess what division rival they sent home to watch the playoffs in taking the west? San Diego Chargers.

Yeah, when having the full compliment of his starting offense Matt Cassell really sucks. The Chiefs have been decimated with injuries on offense this season.

I consider Flynn average at best until the opportunity arises for him to prove otherwise.

Posted by: yesterday's gone | November 15, 2011 at 11:43 AM

Flynn is average at best right now, I get that. He has no body of NFL work to really study to declare either way. Andy Reid is a swindler with QB's (Kolb, Feeley, Mcnabb)

However, the GB organization has been pretty good. So Flynn has that going for him. With that said, I would not trade a 2nd or 3rd for Flynn. 4th & Higher, sure. I'd rather have a potential QB than practice squal or ST fodder.

But, Cassell is above average? Ummmm, I don't think so LOL

If Peyton, Brees, Brady & Rodgers are the best,
I think the next group of above average would be the likes of Vick, Rivers, Eli, Big Ben, maybe Ryan & Romo.

There is NO way Cassell would fall in the above average QB category with those guys. He is like Henne, average, at best. IMHO

Oscar,

get real dude. Yeah anything can happen like Miami finishing with 4 or 5 wins and F-ing themselves out of drafting a potential franchise QB. I hope you weren't insuating they can make a run at the playoffs. They beat Washington and KC, man.

Put it this way, given a choice, I would chose Cassell over Henne every single time.

Posted by: yesterday's gone

Who cares? Because you'd take him over Henne this makes Cassell above average? Compared to Henne he might be above average.

Thats about the weakest & dumbest supporting claim to back up an opinion I've seen on this blog for some time. Congrats!

#1,

If I were Flynn I would stick with Packers and get a free paycheck sitting behind Rodgers(LOL).

Anyway, I posted yesterday a smart gm like Ted Thompson could draft Kellen Moore 31-32 of the 1st rd. Now with guys here posting Flynn's a ufa in 2012. That just may be more of a possibilty Than some here would imagine.

Ted Thompson drafting Kellen Moore bottom 1st rd would be just another case of the rich getting richer.

It seems fairly certain we'll draft between two and eleven, given the fact that the 12th team has four wins. My greatest fear is that the three top QBs will be gobbled up before we pick and we'll have to either A) make a huge reach for a 2nd tier QB or B) try and trade up or down for a QB, which rarely seems to happen or C) just say screw it and take the best player on the board which knowing us would be a lineman. Of course C would be the definition of insanity which you all know too well.

A few more wins and we may be searching for an option D. Also starting to wonder if losing out on one of the three top QBs will hinder the search for a "name" coach. One thing's for sure. It's going to get interesting between now and April.

Packers are smart. They spent a backend 1st rd pick on Rodgers when Favre was still great. They could afford to then because they didnt have glaring holes anywhere else.

They dont have glaring holes anywhere now and are threatning to go undefeated. Seems like another time to draft a great qb bottom 1st rd and groom him to me. The rich keep getting richer!

yesterday's gone, I see your point. I'm not sure Flynn is a free agent. I thought I read that somewhere but now I'm not sure anymore.

Exactly! LOL

Oscar, we don't need you to point out what everyone already knows. We want you to state opinions & back them up to prove your point.

If you have an opinion, MAKE IT.

Spare us the usueless facts that can easily be found on every Snapple bottle cap.

Chris623,

We picked 15th in 2010 and many thought we should have taken a qb. So why be overly pressed if we dont get one of the top 3?

For years our primary problem has been not taking a qb in the 1st rd period!

THE CELLAR

For years since the Marino era ended we have been bringing in average at best qb's. The problem has been that these average at best qb's have shown just enough hope to lull into thinking they'll turn the corner the next season. But they never do.

It's the false glimmer of hope they showed that prevented those regimes from rooting up and spending a #1 pick at the qb position. The latest line of those average at best qb's:

Chad Henne!

ALoco,

Do you think we could have gotten AJ Green too? The Bengals did. (Andy Dalton)

If we eand up picking like 10th or 11th and Peyton politely requests a trade, I can see trading that pick plus a 2nd next year for Manning - if healthy. Why not?

Ross is sweating not having attendance, he wants to make a splash. Sure it's a short term move but if Peyton can make that sorry excuse for a roster in Indy a playoff contender - why couldn't he do it with ours. Think about it - with peyton putting up 25 plus points a game, it take more pressure off our pass defense, we take a rt or safety in the 2nd round and you have a top lt protecting his blindisde - something he was super stressed out about in Indy.

Sure in about 3 or 4 years, we would be 3-13 again but for a brief shining moment, we would be relevant again, we would be darlings again.

All I'm saying is if Peyton forces Indy's hand - and we show improvement - why not? I think it would be a great move.

You seem to be the blog's expert food conisseur. Sounds like the only thing that would help your pet iguana now is how he would best be served as a dish.

YG, reason being based on the experts opinions there may not even be another concensus 1st round QB talent out there. They seem to think the dropoff is fairly dramatic from three to four. If it comes to pass I guess we need to consider all the options.

God I hate to start thinking this way but maybe Blackmon/Weeden in rounds 1 & 2 would be interesting. I know the age thing is a biggie but what are you gonna do? Along with a new administration it could work.

I was singing the praises of Andy Dalton all the way up to the draft....funny, most folks on this forum scoffed at the idea of drafting Dalton in the 1st. Even funnier, so did most GMs and other draftnicks who had him peggged as a 2nd round "project" who would need at least 3 years on the bench.

I guess you never know, it's all a crap shoot.
