All things Jeff Ireland following Sunday's victory

ORCHARD PARK, NY -- During yesterday's Dolphins victory in this hazy, cold town, I conducted an unscientific survey of my twitter followers (please follow me, if you aren't already).

I asked if people have confidence in owner Stephen Ross making a good head coach hire. It's a yes or no question. I also asked if people people have confidence general manager Jeff Ireland will make the right call on finding the Dolphins a franchise-caliber quarterback this offseason, another yes or no question.

Neither fared well. And, believe it or not, Ross fared better than Ireland.

Within the span of 30 minutes, 46 people answered "no," to the question Ross would get it right on the coach hire. Thirteen (13) peope said "yes," he would get it right. One person answered, "Hell no!" that Ross would not get it right. So not much confidence in Ross.

It was worse for Ireland.

Forty-one people said no, they have no confidence in Ireland getting the QB pick right. Eight said, "yes," Ireland would get the QB issue right. And five people said, "Hell no!" Ireland has no chance of getting it right.

So 49 of 54 respondents have zero confidence in Ireland.

I told Ireland after the game that folks simply don't have much confidence in him. He was somewhat surprised, asking me what people? Fans, I answered.

I tried to convince Ireland to speak to me, and thus to you, after the game. He declined. But I wrote about him and his situation in today's Miami Herald nonetheless.

Simply, Ireland is in a no-win situation right now. Most folks don't dig him too much. And, as I wrote, it doesn't seem to matter to those folks that Ireland picked Matt Moore and he's worked out. It doesn't matter that Ireland picked Reggie Bush and tha he has also worked out.

But, as I wrote in my column, the guy whose opinion of Ireland really matters is Ross. And I tell you in the column what Ross thinks of his GM. I also tell you what Ireland's exact role in the looming coach search is and how far along that search currently stands. I also tell you about the caveat that might get Ireland fired despite Ross claims that he is safe for 2012.

I have news for you on what the Dolphins think of their chances to get Bill Cowher and Jon Gruden. And I tell you why I believe Jeff Fisher is today -- even without an interview -- the leading candidate to get the Dolphins job. I also tell you who will lead the coach search -- no, not Ireland.

Please read the column.

But I must warn you if you are anti-Ireland: The column makes the point that however you feel about him now, you will definitely change your mind if the Dolphins get the right quarterback in the offseason. It is what it is. You folks are fans. And fans are a fickle what-have-you-done for me lately bunch.

Ireland gets the QB call right as a GM, he is going to be in a win-win situation for a long time.

I'm sorry, but, Matt Moore is still a backup. Reggie Bush was a gamble that payed off. Marshall and Dansby both worked out, and Burnett occassionally, but, I don't have enough room in this box to list the failures, and LONG has been atrocious this year. SEAN SMITH is still a bum. Odrick? Misi? Pedestrian at best. The list could go on. I agree, IF, and it's a huge IF, but, IF he gets a QB not named Moore that could start for any of the current playoff teams than he will likely last a long time. But after White, Henne, Moore, etc. it seems like a long shot. Especially considering he could have snagged Mallet last draft and didn't. I don't think he'll be able to trade up.

Forget it Phins 78, you're a block head.I was just mentioning the guy does his homework and seems to have an uncanny knack at picking the right teams and scores each week.
Only making conversation,I happen to like betting on the games.
What are you jealous? Geez!

Ireland already got the QB pick right:
Matt Moore is the only QB under contract and he will QB this team next season.

WOW LOT OF OLD TIMERS SHOWING UP, NOW ITS CROSS DRESER MARK,MARK WHAT KIND OF DRESS YOU WEAR TODAY?
(BUFFET OF FASHIONS)

Phins78, thanks for the Fisher insight. I must admit I have limited exposure to him up here in New England.

I do recall him being a big force at the annual owners meetings and was always on the competition committee who helped set the new rules.

I would not be mad or upset if he was chosen, I just need time to digest the pick and feel comfortable that he is the "next Shula" as Ross keeps saying he is seeking.

Fisher already has 17 years under his belt and may not have the stamina for the long haul.

The problem with Ireland is he trys to to hard to be like Parcells he needs to be his own person and take his own road he compares players to acorns as Parcells does. It's time Jeffy to leave the Parcells nest and be your own man. The QB situation is draft a QB let him learn and let Moore start the next season he has earned that right the team just looks better with him right now.

All I'm saying is that were 1 and 6 against teams with winning records. Matt Moore got that win. Chad Henne sucks period! (For the Henne supporters).

DC, Im not sure if the Pats are even interested in the Dolphins game, didnt they clinch the division? It's a shame coaches didnt realize there back up was always better than the starter (Henne) earlier in the season.

Why exactly should we have faith in Ireland and his outdated parcells philosophy? This team I think is performing quite well for what it was built to do. Run the ball and stop the run. Unfortunately that doesn't amount to a hill of beans in this league. You've got to pass the ball and create turnovers. Dolphins do neither well at all. Our formula works on the bottom feeders in this league but guess what? Teams like Baltimore, Houston, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Dallas can also stop the run but will also pass the ball on you all day. When the dolphins face any team with a resemblance of a passing game they suck the big cokk. For this I should congratulate Jeff Ireland and have faith? The team sucks, its barely mediocre and will be in the draft abyss again. Too good to not get the player we need and not good enough to reality compete. Thanks Jeff.

I was never realy against the Bush move, was not exactly sure if it would work, But it has. As for Moore I did'nt know enough about the guy to have a view point, actually if I recall, I said "who"? But Moore has shown he is the answer going into next season. Someone mentioned that he has not won games against winning teams, such as Ravens, Pittsburg, etc. true, but until you have an Ol that can match the talent of those defences your QB is going to struggle, or run for his life..as far as Ireland finding the right QB, Im not optimistic, but I do feel Ross is going to have more say so on that anyway. whether that be good or bad, we will have to see. My real concern is at the HC position, not many coaches would want to work in a "watch ur back" organization. Thats what you have as long as Ireland is around.

Henne put up 425 yards against NE in the MNF opener.
I expect Moore to put up 500 yards because he is a superior QB.
Also Henne beat the Jets 3/4 times he faced them and I expect Moore to beat them also.
Beating the 2 of them will give us a 3rd 7-9 season and prove once and for all that Moore is the franchise QB that Henne will never be.
At least for this team full of pro bowlers.

Nice win yesterday...Man, 2012 can't get here soon enough...Reggie for president!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's great to know we can beat teams with less than 500 records but cant beat teams with winning records. Again this leads us to a middle of the pack type of team. This is what its been like for the last 10 years.

I must admit it... Home has some type of weird clairvoyance going on.
He has an uncanny ability to predict things.

I too would like to go to Vegas with Home!

Home is accurate on the phins and on chemtrails, which we do have again in Broward county Florida this morning.

Home is a 55 year old living in his mother's basement full of Justin Bieber posters.

AMAZING HOW THE DONKYS ON HERE ARE HAPPY AT 5 AND 9 AND WITH AVERAGE QB AND MEDOCORE DEFENSE.
AND SEE A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM MISING ONLY QB,WERE DO I GET SOME KPOOL-AID?
(BUFFET OF TRUTHS)

This team was/is built to run and play solid defense. Problem is, that formula is rarely a winner in the NFL of today.

Dolphins are 3rd defensively against the rush, 5 defensively in scoring D, and 7th overall in rushing offense. Our quarterbacks are asked to manage the games, not win them, and our coaches have been game managers, not go for throat winners.

We need some more skill guys, and a coach who doesn't manage a game to keep it close and try to pull out a win at the end. Too many variables with that strategy. Unfortunately, IMO, that is exactly what Fisher is.

Last we heard from Home was he was filming the summer block-buster "Have a Harrpy Day" Starring Tom Cruise in the lead roll, Home, Whens the release date??

I'm not a big fan of Ireland, but unlike others, I'm not afraid to mention the good moves he made. Matt Moore is really playing well, he's making some awesome throws, I don't care who it's against. He's doing this with a pretty crappy o-line (aside from Long and Pouncey), only one good wr (Marshall) and one decent TE (Fasano). Henne had the same people and FAILED. It's not Moore's fault if Sparano didn't let them compete to start. We all know Henne was going to be the starter no matter what. That was a BIG MISTAKE. Yes we should draft a QB in the first round but Matt Moore is an above average QB, I don't care what anyone says. I'm a Matt Moore fan. Reggie Bush was also another great pick up by Ireland. So was Burnett. The rookies, Pouncey, Thomas, Clay, Gates, Wilson, they've all contributed. Unlike other years, I get the feeling the Dolphins are heading in the right direction. Having said all that, if Ross has a chance to get Cowher and Ireland is in the way, too bad. Business is business. I doubt Cowher wants to coach again so we'll see. I say Ireland probably stays. Let's get rid of Colombo and Serena, that would be a pretty good start. Can't wait for next year!

MONTRAL, HAVE THEY OPENED THE BANK/SUSHI CONCEPT YET?, IT WOOD BE GREAT TO WITHDRAW MONEY AND GET CALIFORNA ROLLS IN SAME STOP.
(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Thank you Armando for bringing it to the public's attention that the fans HATE Jeff Ireland.

As for the fans getting off the back if he makes the QB situation right in this draft, NO IT WON'T.

He already blew his chance in this past draft. The fact the Fins didn't draft a QB was RIDICULOUS! It made this season a COMPLETE WASTE!

Everyone and DEZ BRYANT'S MOTHER knows the Dolphins will draft a QB in Round #1 this year. If they don't, then you will see the fans rebel like you have never seen before!!

Of course Jeff doesn't know the fans hate him. He is too stupid to self evaluate himself. And credit for Reggie Bush?! Please. Well Reggie is having a good season he is NOT a stud and he is getting older. Is he significantly better then what we have had the last 4-5 years with the Ricky/Ronnie combo? If you take out the two Bills games (Buffalo is pathetic) then NO. The real question is can DANIEL THOMAS play. The bigger issue is can Daniel Thomas be a STUD. Because if not, it was another waste of a 2nd round pick.

Jeff Ireland is a LOSER and will always be a LOSER. Let him go to Minnesota after Spielman is fired there!

ALoco, I'm not happy with 5-9, but we started 0-7. What can you do?? The players weren't ready to play, and the coach already paid the price for that. Average QB? Mediocre defense? LOL!! Yeah, right...

LOL@Tom Foolery, I saw color pictures of Home on Miami Dolphin Training Camp on opening day and on another blog where he posts Dolphin photos.
Home is only in his thirtys, looks like a beach guy, tanned, blonde hair and obviously works out.

I'm surprised he looks so sun drenched and fit because he is always mentioning the chemtrails outside in South Florida. LMAO!

I would love if we signed D. Jackson in the offseason to complement Marshall on the other side. Draft a QB. Find a RT, RG, TE, and the offense would be set!

Warning: Matt Moore can look good for 4/5 games but he will have a set back of 5/6 games. See Panthers in 2009/10 or the coming games vs N.E AND N.Y

Reggie Bush is averaging what, over 5 yards a carry?? Nobody talks about that. What's Matt Moore's QB rating?? Again, you don't hear anyone talk about it. Our defense is what, 2nd or 3rd in the league against the run?? You don't read about it much. Yeah, tell me we've nothing in Miami. No talent. Still years away...LOL!!

AL FROM NJ, DO YOU HAVE MAN-CRUSH ON HOME?
(BUFFET OF EXPERMENTATION)

By the way, MATT MOORE is not a franchise QB! He is an UPGRADE from Henne, but is not going to win this team a Superbowl! PLEASE STOP IT! We need to draft a QB in ROUND #1. Let Moore start next year and groom the franchise behind him.

P.S. Can someone please get Moore some sticky glue for his hands? We always emphasize TD to INT ratio, but there are WAY too many fumbles!

Al from NJ = Home.

This situation remembers me those days when after years of no running game to support Dan Marino Miami finally gets a RB that hit the 1.000 yards mark, Abdul Jabbar, suddenly Miami has a 1.000 yard RB, Marino has a running game. A deep analysis of those yards shows one thing, 25% of those yards came against that bunch of looser the Jets were those days, against the rest ot the league Jabbar never could run, his average attempt was 3.6, pedestrian.

Matt Moore and Reggie Bush flourish against crappy teams but when things still mattered they didn´t get anything close, 200 yards against the Bills means nothing, 100 yards against Ravens or 49ers does mean something. That is the truth as numbers do not lie, you can dress them, but if you study them they don´t lie. We can continue believing in both, but next year when in December this team will be playing again for pride, we will again see Miami winning against crappy teams and loosing against who matters.

For all you Tebow fans, when he plays against a legit starting QB, Denver has no shot.

We need 2 more o-linemen, another fast WR with good hands, another TE, another pass rusher, a shutdown CB and a playmaking FS. Looks like a lot, but it's not. Miami is always a factor in free agency, Ross won't mind spending $$$ on the right players. The draft will also allow us to find these players. The future looks great guys, it really does. The 0-7 start killed us...

AL FROM NJ, DO YOU HAVE MAN-CRUSH ON HOME? (BUFFET OF EXPERMENTATION) Posted by: ALoco | December 19, 2011 at 11:05 AM

"Not that there is anything wrong with that."

Al in NJ, post the pictures of Home if you can, I always wondered what Home looked like.

Old news SEPTUM, his stats from the Panthers have been covered. Thats with the Panthers, that was then, He is playing well now, even in games that we lost, he looked pretty good. And those losses can not be blamed on Moore. Im not saying he is the next franchise QB or will be elite, but he has shown enough to be a starter.

That's exactly right. None of these wins mean a thing. They're all insignificant. We haven't done a thing and if anything, this team keeps getting further away from significance.

Just kidding around AL, it came off wrong. I used to joke back and forth with Home a while back, that's where this is coming from. I didn't mean any offense to you.

Ok, Ireland is improving....i would like to know exactly which mistakes are on him...Mando this should be one of your columns this week....going forward we all know that the likes of cowher and gruden will not be our next coach if Ireland remains the gm.

here's where we stand in the draft:

1. Colts
2. Rams
3. Vikings
4. Bucs
5. Browns
6. Panthers, Skins, Bills, Dolphins

We are still in a great position to grab a franchise QB!

Colts are getting Luck...next
Vikings are sticking with Ponder
Rams are sticking with Bradford
Bucs are sticking with Freeman
Browns - may be shopping for QB
Panthers - Duh...Newton
Bills - just extended Fitzpatrick
Redskins - actively shopping QB
Dolphins - QB #1 priority

So...other than the Browns & Redskins we could still be grabbing the second QB after Luck in the draft.

Yesterday's win was fun and I was rooting for them to win...and will the next two weeks. But, if they lose to the Jets & Pats I will not be shedding too many tears.

I too would like to see what Home looks like. I always thought of some long haird charactor out of Lord of the Rings

For all you Tebow fans, when he plays against a legit starting QB, Denver has no shot. Posted by: Spiderman

To all you Dolphin fans, when it comes to playing against a stud QB, the Dolphins have no shot. Why criticize Tebow? At least the Broncos are going to make the playoffs and are a good story everywhere. No one could give a crap about the Dolphins anymore.

Tebow winning.
Dolphins losing.

Irelandsucks you can't do that. Fans always say "if you take out,,,insert games here,,,then he wouldn't have the same numbers". That's a pretty dumb way to look at it because you CANT TAKE THOSE GAMES OUT, they were played and count toward an average no matter who the team is or when they played them.

KC beat Green Bay. Green Bay isn't going to say" well if you take out the KC game were were undefeated". It's just a bad way to look at things, it makes no sense.

First; Ross did one hell of a job picking a new coach last year. Too bad his first choice chose the 49ers instead....Let's give the guy some SERIOUS kudos for that.
After saying that; I don't think the coaching is or has been the problem. Or, even the QB. However, if Manning happen's to become available, AND the Dolphins can land him, they are in an unbelievable position to shore up the teams main problem with the first two or three picks in this draft. OFFENSIVE LINEMEN!!. With a few good picks of offensive linemen to help protect Manning, and Moore, if need be, and make bigger holes for our running backs, this team will be very tough to beat!

Bwahahahahahaha a Tebow disciple in here. Hey douche get lost. No one cares about your man crush on Tebow. GO Tebow in front of his poster and keep fantasizing that Tebow is a good QB. The only reason he ever wins is because his defense holds the other team below 20. Otherwise he is not good enough to keep up with good teams. You are not a dolphins fan so please stop talking about our gm. You are obviously a denver fan if youre making fun of the dolphins while prasing Tebow. get a life you loser.

Ps I'm not sold on Moore as being our long term solution at qb as I have still yet to see him defeat a legit playoff team or ralley us from behind late in the fourth quarter to a victory...he has freakishly small hands too which is why he leads the NFL in fumbles...if Moore can lead us to victory over ne, that could sell me on him a bit Moore.:-)

Irelandsucks, Again whats crtical about my comments. It's the truth, I think the guy is a heck of a leader and generally a good guy but this doesnt speak for his actual football skills.

You are what your record says you are...Tebow is 6-2.
Next topic please!

Flipper, How the heck do you know Moore has freakishly small hands? And the Pats have nothing to play for.

SPIDER, YOU DESCRIBING ODINSEYE.
(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Pats are playing for the #1 seed and home-field advantage throughout...

So...other than the Browns & Redskins we could still be grabbing the second QB after Luck in the draft. Yesterday's win was fun and I was rooting for them to win...and will the next two weeks. But, if they lose to the Jets & Pats I will not be shedding too many tears. Posted by: NHFINSFAN

#1 Whose to say Miami won't win again? NY Jets are pathetic and are Pats even playing for anything?

#2 A lot of teams may still consider a QB even if they recently drafted someone (Bradford). Also, other teams WILL try and trade up if they need a QB...

Bottomline:

What dolfans are ultimately judging Parcells(yes Parcells), Ireland, and Sparano by is the old "4yr rebuilding plan". By this plan "smart nfl regimes" have thier rebuilt teams poised to make a "deep" playoffs run by year 4.

In this regime, the 4th yr, this team stormed out of the gates falling flat on it's faces, at 0-7. That's "totally unacceptable" under the "4yr rebuilding rules" and "ALL" responsible should be held responsible.

Doesnt matter Ireland had a few hits. It's "OVERALL" performance that matters most in year 4 of rebuild. Year 4 should signify the job is complete, not almost done.

In "laymen's terms" almost done signifies halfassed. Halfassed signifies failure for "ALL" involved. This includes Jeff Ireland.

NHFIn, Tebow ids 6 and 2 great! What legit QB did he face in thoughs 6 wins?

Damn IrelandSucks...did someone crap in your cereal this morning?

The old 'he should have drafted Ryan Mallett argument'......just CLASSIC!! How much longer will we have to keep listening to that one? Gets crticized to death for drafting Henne in the second but it would have been OK to draft Mallett in the third?.....Ok, that makes a lot of sense.

If we get a first round QB in April's draft, is there ANY possibility that guys will shut the F*CK up about Mallett? Probably not....they'll say we drafted the wrong guy. That's how guys roll.....bunch of Monday Morning QB's, criticizing EVERY wrong move Ireland makes but given no credit when he makes a RIGHT move. That's why you're NEVER goign to win with the fanbase, Jeff. You're right not to talk to the media or the fans. They have ONE agenda when it comes to you....kick you in the nuts at every opportunity.

TRUE. But overall I would say Bush has had a GOOD year, not great. The fact Daniel Thomas (2nd round pick) hasn't shown much is a bigger problem. Reggie Bush didn't cost you much, Daniel Thomas did. Also Reggie is getting older, only has 1 year left on contract, and still is injury prone. I wouldn't expect Reggie Bush to continue to be used the way he is past the next year or so. If Daniel Thomas is a bust, Miami is still going to have to find a stud RB somewhere.

NH, we are in an awful position to grab a qb. We are at least 4th in line. And up here, talk in buffalo is that drafting a qb is entirely possible. We're fooked.

Going to have to mortgage the farm to get a guy. I'm all for it, however doubt Ireland would be. Get used to the names Riley Reiff or Johnathan martin.

YG/FLIPPER/DYING BRED/LOL/LMAO/ STILL SEZS THE GARAGE MACHANIC IS GOING TO BE THE MOST SOUGHT OUT COACH THIS YEAR, WHAT A DONKY.
(BUFFET OF ACORNS)

We have to trade our 2nd and 1st to move up. Prob would have to draft lower in the 2nd if we still have one.

NEWSFLASH: Ryan Mallett wasn't a first round QB, regardless of what he does will never be a first round QB.....can't rewind the clock.....32 teams agreed he wasn't and 32 teams agreed he wasn't worth it in the second round. If he was SUCH a sure thing, why didn't anyobdy stast hi on their roster and develop him for down the road, as tradebait? The truth is, only one team used that strategy...the Pats. They figured he was worth a gamble in the third....let's see if they were right.

"I told Ireland after the game that folks simply didn't have much confidence in him.
"He was somewhat surprised asking me what people?"

If this doesn't say clueless, I don't know what does.
