All things Jeff Ireland following Sunday's victory

ORCHARD PARK, NY -- During yesterday's Dolphins victory in this hazy, cold town, I conducted an unscientific survey of my twitter followers (please follow me, if you aren't already).

I asked if people have confidence in owner Stephen Ross making a good head coach hire. It's a yes or no question. I also asked if people people have confidence general manager Jeff Ireland will make the right call on finding the Dolphins a franchise-caliber quarterback this offseason, another yes or no question.

Neither fared well. And, believe it or not, Ross fared better than Ireland.

Within the span of 30 minutes, 46 people answered "no," to the question Ross would get it right on the coach hire. Thirteen (13) peope said "yes," he would get it right. One person answered, "Hell no!" that Ross would not get it right. So not much confidence in Ross.

It was worse for Ireland.

Forty-one people said no, they have no confidence in Ireland getting the QB pick right. Eight said, "yes," Ireland would get the QB issue right. And five people said, "Hell no!" Ireland has no chance of getting it right.

So 49 of 54 respondents have zero confidence in Ireland.

I told Ireland after the game that folks simply don't have much confidence in him. He was somewhat surprised, asking me what people? Fans, I answered.

I tried to convince Ireland to speak to me, and thus to you, after the game. He declined. But I wrote about him and his situation in today's Miami Herald nonetheless.

Simply, Ireland is in a no-win situation right now. Most folks don't dig him too much. And, as I wrote, it doesn't seem to matter to those folks that Ireland picked Matt Moore and he's worked out. It doesn't matter that Ireland picked Reggie Bush and tha he has also worked out.

But, as I wrote in my column, the guy whose opinion of Ireland really matters is Ross. And I tell you in the column what Ross thinks of his GM. I also tell you what Ireland's exact role in the looming coach search is and how far along that search currently stands. I also tell you about the caveat that might get Ireland fired despite Ross claims that he is safe for 2012.

I have news for you on what the Dolphins think of their chances to get Bill Cowher and Jon Gruden. And I tell you why I believe Jeff Fisher is today -- even without an interview -- the leading candidate to get the Dolphins job. I also tell you who will lead the coach search -- no, not Ireland.

Please read the column.

But I must warn you if you are anti-Ireland: The column makes the point that however you feel about him now, you will definitely change your mind if the Dolphins get the right quarterback in the offseason. It is what it is. You folks are fans. And fans are a fickle what-have-you-done for me lately bunch.

Ireland gets the QB call right as a GM, he is going to be in a win-win situation for a long time.

Also, who would you rather have? D.Sproles or Reggie Bush? Even McGahee is having a MONSTER season in Denver. Bush is having a good year and deserves credit. But the fact that Daniel Thomas is another 2nd round pick which could be a bust is a MAJOR PROBLEM. They can't seem to get any studs in the 1st/2nd/3rd rounds while other teams do.

Biggest problem with this team -- LACK OF STUDS AT SKILLED POSITIONS.

Problem with Jeff Ireland --- Doesn't draft skilled positions in draft. Would rather trade down and take "good" or "safe" players and hope to get an acorn.

The only acorn Jeff has found is up his butt.

This is a PHILOSOPHICAL problem with the Dolphins.

Craig we wont find that out until Brady retires who knows how long that will be.

Yep, Ireland's done a great job. Look at how much better we've got. Yep, Ireland is great.

I know this probably won't happen, but since we are out of the playoffs and the April qb derby, what if St. Louis finished last and selected luck. Would you trade Jake long for Bradford straight up?

Plus the moves Ireland made that failed, and the moves he didnt make period. Are just as much reason why this team flopped out of the starting gates this season 0-7.

Armando, the exact same argument you make for keeping Ireland could also perfectly apply to Tony Sparano. Yet someone's still going to finish what he started. the good and bad of it.

The question is "why should Ireland not be held to the exact same accountibility standards as Sparano"? Life is not always fair and this situation presently speaks volumes to that point.

Just like this regime did a halfassed good job over thier 4yr reign. Now Steven Ross seems to be executing "halfassed" accountability in determining who stays and who goes.

Halfassed has never made anything right!

Couple of last points and then I'm gone:

LOVED seeing the Jets getting the snot kicked out of them by the Eagles yesterday. I've thought they are complete frauds all along. Nice to see it backed up again yesterday. Are they going to the playoffs? Maybe. Can't see them doing a thing....but let's see.

If we aren't able to trade up for a QB, for whatever reason, I am fine with this team drafting Landry Jones. I don't believe this talk about him not being the real thing. Experts had his as the number two QB earlier this year and I like the kid. He's got a way's to go to be an NFL starter but didn't people say the same thing about Aaron Rodgers. Get the first round talent and let him develop behind Moore. If it's 2-3 years, then so be it. Just get the talent and let's get the ball rolling.

Lastly....I am convinced that IrelandSucks is in fact Joe Bloe. Anybody else agree on that one?

Have a good one guys....

Fin4Life... IMO.....people have clinged to the perfect season for far to long.... You want my honest opinion.....without the PERFECT SEASON under his belt....Shula doesn't get to be mediocre with the GREATEST QB in NFL history....and get chance after chance after chance....to not EVEN MAKE it to the SB.......without that 17-0......perhaps Shula is gone sooner....and we get a coach who understands that in that ERA of football..he needed a top10 Defence...and a top 5 rushing attack to win the SB..... I put many of Marino's failures directly on Shula's shoulders..... kris | December 18, 2011 at 04:38 PM

Kris,

I don't know how many times I've posted that very same thing regarding Marino extending the career of Shula. If Marino doesn't slide to 27 in the 83 draft then Shula probably drafts Darrell Green (DB, Wash.) to replace the often injured Don McNeal or over the hill Gerald Small and more than likely goes by the way side late 80's like Noll and Landry did.

That wasn't the point though, you said you wished the Packers would run the table to stop everybody from living in the past and more in the here and now. To which I agree given are almost two decades of futility but don't see how celebrating the single greatest accomplishment in Pro sports affects anybody in seeing what the team is today. You may very well have a very legit point but for me it's about preserving a historic moment which has nothing to do with another loosing Season or the Q.B. of the future, who will be the next H.C., my dislike for our SCOUT g.m. and I meant to put scout in caps with G.M. SMALL, our lousy owner who can't get out of his own way ect...

The old 'he should have drafted Ryan Mallett argument'......just CLASSIC!! How much longer will we have to keep listening to that one? Posted by: Craig M

Craig, the Dolphins #1 need was a QB. The Dolphins chose to NOT DRAFT A QB! It doesn't matter if it was Ryan Mallett or someone else. They didn't do it. The fact Mallett FELL and they STILL didn't draft him is what pisses people off!

Reminds me of TE also. Everyone the last two years have been begging the Fins to draft a stud TE. Gronkowski was there, we pass. Aaron Hernandez is there, we pass. Jimmy Graham is there, we pass. People get pissed off!

I think Jeff Ireland is so smart he outsmarts himself and ends up being a dumb-ass. If everyone KNOWS you have to draft a QB, you know what? It is OKAY TO DRAFT A QB! You don't have to try and trick everyone! I would rather do what everyone THINKS we are going to do in the draft and draft the RIGHT PEOPLE instead of trying to outsmart everyone and drafting the WRONG PEOPLE.

Everyone wants Dez Bryant, and the Dolphins PASS.

I could go on and on and on...

Oh, and then we decide to take Patrick Turner in the 3rd round when most people have him as a late round pick or not being drafted?!?! (I know this was a Parcells pick, but still!)

FRUSTRATED!

ALoco Kim Jong is here folks! LOL

"I told Ireland after the game that folks simply didn't have much confidence in him. "He was somewhat surprised asking me what people?"

Maybe he won't be clueless when he sees that airplane banner some people are running at the Jets game. Clueless!

FLIPER,WILL YOU BE POSTEING TILL 3AM IN MORNING LIKE NORMAL?
(BUFFET OF ACORNS)

So, you are constantly bashing Ireland, Sparano and the team and their stupid decisions and ask them to go.

Hhhmmm.

Do you really wonder that your twitter followers are not huge fans of Ireland? Don't you have the impression that the guys who follow you, might have the same negative the-world-will-stop-and -the -Fins-are-garbage-attitude?
I really do not like Ireland, but if I was him, I would not respond to you either.

Lastly....I am convinced that IrelandSucks is in fact Joe Bloe. Anybody else agree on that one?

Craig,
Not sure who Joe Bloe is, but I promise you I am not him. Sorry if you have an issue with my posts, but believe me I am a huge Dolphin fan and season ticket holder for many years. I criticize Ireland because I do think he sucks. I love the Dolphins, I hate Ireland. If you feel that makes me lesser of a Dolphin fan, then that is your right. Just because fans don't see eye-to-eye doesn't make them not fans. I want to see this team win more then anything. They aren't going to do it though until clowns like Jeff Ireland are gone.

Brian billick would be a very good coach. We need to pursue him with full force. Also, we really need to get the draft right. If Robert Griffin III is on the board, he needs to be drafted. He's michael vick with good passing skills. I remember last season around draft time Armando wrote a column stating that he wouldnt draft cam newton with the 15th pick. Now cam is tearing up the league on his way to rookie of the year. Lets get our franchise qb and be done with it. No more second round "maybe" qb's like chad henne and pat white. Keep Matt Moore as the backup and cut robot henne. Also a right tackle would be wise and another pass rusher. Here's hoping we dont win another game this season. oh yeah...i guess reggie bush is an every down back. hahaha to all the haters!!!! go phins!!!

BIGOT ROSS, GUESS IT'S OK WITH YOU DEZ BRYANT WAS PASSED OVER BECAUSE HIS MOMMA'S A HO'.

HAD TEBOW BEEN INTERVIEWED BY IRELAND AND THE SAME QUESTION WAS POSED. HE WOULD DEFINITELY BE FIRED BY NOW.

BECAUSE SHE ALMOST "ABORTED" HER PREGNANCY WITH TEBOW, COULDNT THE SAME CALOUS LINE OF QUESTIONING APPLY?

It's amazing to me that our former head coach who was an Oline guru struggled for 4 years to fix our Oline depite spending more money there than any other team in the league. Then Todd Bowles comes in, makes one move (John Jerry to left tackle for Jake Long), and all of a sudden our Oline looks like world beaters. Reggie goes for 200 yards and we get 250 total yards rushing. That in itself justifies the firing of Sparano. I don't think the guy had a clue when it comes to talent evaluation or putting the right guys in the right positions.

ALOCO KIM JONG IS IN DA HOUSE! LOL

Unless, Craig, IrelandSucks is Kris talking about Ryan Mallet again

Hated the Moore and Bush signings at the beginning of the year but am kinda a believer, need to see it against good teams though, it's great that they can be mediocre/8-8, but we still need a QB in the draft ... not Mallet

No question, Ireland has made HORRENDOUS decisions since being gm. Even a broken clock's right twice a day.

Why give Dr. Frankenstien amnesty?

Last comments (promise this time)....

Jeff Ireland knows more than the fans. Argue that if you want but him and his staff of scouts are ACTUALLY at these games and the combine. They spend hours upon hours on the road and in meetings. Us?....we sit in our living rooms watching games and browsing the Internet listening to experts like Mel Kiper tell us how smart they are. Only problem is, if guys like Kiper are SO smart, how come they've never been a GM or scout in the NFL before. If they were right more than GMs, don't you think guys like Jerry Jones would back trucks full of boatloads of money to his door. Answer?....he's not any smarter....he only makes it seem that way. If guys like Kiper were GMs they would have been fired YEARS ago. Problem is ESPN pumps these guys up, people pay lots of money to them for the info and then believe everything as gospel....it's all crap!!

Last point, interesting that people had Odrick as a Jeff Ireland 'bust' after the guy got lost for the season after one game last year and now he's playing well. Also, interesting that John Jerry was being deemed a bust after only his 'rookie' season but he played well yesterday. Fans and media maybe a little knee-jerk'?......hmmmmmm....

IRELAND SYMPATHIZERS:

a BROKEN CLOCK'S RIGHT TWICE A DAY. ENUFF SAID.

Kris, Ryan Mallet and Eminem are going to be featured in a new rap video called "White Gangsters"

Explains why kris like Ryan mallet so much..

CRAIGM,

A BROKEN CLOCK'S RIGHT TWICE A DAY. ENUFF SAID.

LOOK LONG AND HARD ENOUGH, ONE COULD FIND SUPERLATIVES ABOUT ADOLPH HITLER. STILL IT DOESNT MAKE HIM ANY LESS A MONSTER TO HUMANITY.

Ireland sucks, if I'm wrong then I apologize. Haven't seen him on here for a bit and your styles are similar.

Tuna, great post. Awesome that you picked up on that fact. I don't EVER remember Jerry being used at either of the tackle positions. Could he have been better than Colombo all this time? We'll never know now....

I WONDER IF IRELAND ASKED MALLET DOES HIS MOM SCREW BLACKS? HE ACTS LIKE HE'S FROM THE 'HOOD DOESNT HE?

Craig M,
Sure Jeff knows more then us. The problem is he knows more then us and still makes the WRONG DECISIONS.

He has the wrong philosophy on the draft and building a football team. His strategy like Bill Parcells IS WRONG for 2011. It worked in 1991, not 2011.

You have to draft STUDS in the SKILLED POSITIONS high in the draft. Your chances of finding an "ACORN" at a skilled position is VERY SMALL.

TOM BRADY WAS A FLUKE.

REPOSTING THOUGHTS ON BRIAN BILLICK

The fact we seem to be the only team seriously considering Brian Billick for a Head Coaching job again speaks volumes about our F.O. and the fact some fans are considering it also speaks to the low depths to which we've fallen as a franchise. The school of thought being sold on Billick is he adapted from running a scoring machine of an O in Minn. to a ball control attack behind his D in Balt. but I have a different take on the matter. In Minnesota he had the premier skill players of the late 90's in R.B.'s Robert Smith and Moe Williams. At T.E. with Andrew Glover and of course the 3 headed monster at W.R. with C.Carter, Randy Moss (rookie phenom) and Jake Reed. The one thing about those Vikings which gets lost in the conversation is the fact they arguably behind the Cowboys of the early 90's had the best OL of the decade and one for the ages anchored inside by Center Jeff Christy, Guards, Randall McDaniel and David Dixon, Tackles Todd Steussie and Korey Stringer (RIP) It was this OL that gave Randall Cunningham all the time in the world to look deep and have a career rebirth in 98, all Billick had to do really was not meddle to much and they were going to light up the opposition. In 99 he's hired to replace Marchibroda in Baltimore because of his supposed knowledge of building Offenses to compliment the D that Ozzie Newsome had put together and again Billick was Johnny on the spot inherting arguably the Greatest D ever assembled in history. He does nothing for the O really, the side of the ball he was hired to affect and improve really given Marvin Lewis ran his D very effectively. They actually win inspite of Billick's poor showing with T.Dilfer draging the O along for the ride. It's hard to loose when you have in their primes, R.Lewis, P.Boulware, J.Sharper at LB on DL T.Siragusa, S.Adams and P.McCrary with R.Woodson, D.Starks, C.McCallister and R.Bailey all on the back end. Sorry folks but Billick is a fraud and it's why since 2005 NO team has come calling for his services until we resurrected the name from the dead, his NFL Net show with J.Mora Jr. called Coaches corner was for the brain dead!!!

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF A "PARAGRAH"?

(BUFFET OF SEPARATING THOUGHTS)

Draft position update:
With the recent win, and the fortune-favored wins of a couple of our draft rivals, we've only slipped to around 10th. But we've gone from around #3-4th best QB available, to now #6-7th best QB available.
This also has reprocussions on our head coach search, as surely a potential star candidate will want the option of being able to pick a top rated QB in the draft. Otherwise why commit to the torture of trying to win with retreads/average QB? Not alluring to Cowher, Fisher or Billick to be sure.
Be careful what you wish for, all you win-no-matter-what uber fans.
We do have the Patriots next, and I don't see us knocking them down despite our good play of late. And the Jets will be a dirty nasty grudge match, so who knows.

Message to Jeff Ireland-- in case you honestly were unaware-- many fans believe you are in way over your head as GM of a NFL franchise. To say they lack confidence is being generous. Some would say you simply lucked into a position you were not ready for, due to your association with Parcells. Your reluctance to speak does not help... again, in case you were unaware.

ALOCO KIM JONG,

THEN YOU CAN WASH IT ALL DOWN WITH A SPERMACIDAL SLURPEE.

(BUFFET OF THROAT COOLERS)

I GOT TO GO TO WORK TO SUPORT THE GANG OF DEFEAT(FLIPER,CUBEN,DC,ODIN) AND THERE WELFARE, I SEE YOU LATER.
(BUFFET OF LATERS)

Our new crop of QB draft possibles, now that we've dropped in the draft:
L. Jones, EJ Manuel(please NO), Foles, Weeden, Cousins.
Jones prob gone. Manuel isn't elite or a winner (don't understand his popularity here). Foles, Cousins and Weeden are considered 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round propects.
Ross better be promising coach candidate X that he'll trade anything to move up to pick a top rated QB. Otherwise, we're looking at greenhorn assistants for the job.
Losing faith.

ALOCO KIM JONG,

THE SPERMICIDAL SLURPEES COME IN ALL FLAVORS. BANANA, STRABERRY, ORANGE, ECT.... EVEN YOUR FAVORITE, "MANGO-NUT".

ARE YOU SURE YOU WONT HAVE ONE BEFORE YOU GO?

JS in LA @12:18

There also is something more to take into consideration and that's the Rams sitting at #2. I don't for one minute believe they give up on S.Bradford just yet, he had a great rookie showing and has for the majority been hurt this Season. You analyze the needs they have across the board and I can see them dealing their 2nd overall pick, will we enter the biding war?? I can't answer that but if we are willing to get aggressive about it we could trade a large chunk of 2012 picks and slide into the 2nd pick. The Fins can afford to do it once given how young a team they are, we aren't the 09 Jets which did it for Sancheez with an older vet heavy team built through F.A. just a thought!

I know it was a meaningless games, but I must admit Moore's throws to both Marshall and Fasano for TD's were beautiful with great touch.

Also, I <3 Reggie Bush! Dude has played lights out!

PROFF POSITIVE THAT FLIPPER AND ODIN ARE ROOMMATES, ALWAYS DRUNKEN.
(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Everyone keep this in mind when talking John Jerry's performane yesterday. Buffalo has 19 sacks on the season. 10 came in one game vs Washington. They have ZERO pass rush.

If he can string together multiple healthy seasons, REGGIE BUSH could possibly become the 2nd coming of Marques Allen. Another famous USC tailback.

Minus the pirouette, Bush's 76yd scamper reminded me of Marques Allen's 76yd scamper to lead the Raiders to an upset SB win over the Redskins.

fin4life,
I have no doubts that we CAN trade up, what i question is the gumption to do it.
Latest rumors is the one where St.L beats out Indy for top pick. Then what? Do you pass on Luck? Indy still wants a top QB too.
bradfors is over his head right now, but the Rams have a lot invested in him. As does Minnesota in Ponder. So the conventional wisdom is that they pick other than QB, and or trade down for more picks. So yeah, we certainly have a shot.
But will we? Or are we looking at 2nd-3rd round QB talent?

ALOCO KIM JONG,

YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU MAN! LOL

By the way, Jerry's position at Ole Miss was left tackle so it wasn't a huge stretch to play him there in a pinch.

Hey Einstiens,

Everybody and thier illigitimate kids knows that we can trade up. Its not a government ufo secret.

Question is whether or not our cowardly fo actually do it? I dont place it past them to convince themselves Matt Moore is adequate.

Isnt that what always happens in Miami?

JS -

Don't dispair too much....I think we're still in pretty good position to pick up the 3 or 4 (RG3 or Jones) where we are.

Despite what almost everyone around here seems to think, these QBs aren't coming off the board 1,2,3,4 or anthing like that. Yeah, new CBA makes for less risk, but many teams have a variety of needs and have recently taken QBs...at some point, they have to build around that QB and allow for development.

Also, while it would seem like everyone in need of a QB would jump at the chance in the draft....there will be a few who opt to go the FA route which has a handfull of potential candidates this year. Personally, this is the way I see Cleveland going. Not quite ready to give up on McCoy, but disgruntled enough to go after someone like Hoyer or Flynn in FA to bring some competition in the mix and reserving those picks build the team.

Just my two cents for what it's worth. I'm not too worried yet...a win or two more, and I may be very solidly in the trade up crowd.

I have better question for everyone:

Do you think ET is hiding the fact from his people that "humans" actually exist?

I have not been impressed with Ross and Ireland over the last year, but Ross has spent a lot of money: I am open minded about giving him one true shot at reshaping this team. The debacle of the last couple years is of Parcells doing, even more than Ireland and certainly more than Ross. The next few weeks will answer for certain if they really get it...

Pot calling the kettle black, YG.
But we're in agreement on that. I'm in the faithless catagory until they actually do it next draft.
Rapidly becoming a Bronco fan (yes, I'm a Tebow fan).
But I was really hoping not to have to dump 40 years of Dolpihn fandom. One last chance.

Reggie is playing motivated this year, and he's staying healthy maybe that turf he played at in NO did factor in his knees holding up this season.

Our government is hiding the existence of ET to us and ET is hiding the existence of humans to its people.

I dont know about you guys, but, Ross looks eeringly like a ET plant to me. He definitely could have had a supporting actor ET role on "Men In Black"!
