« Will Dolphins play spy who loved Vick on Sunday? | Main | The answer to the question you ask more than any other »

Brian Daboll willing to embrace the unorthodox

I am a fan of unorthodox football.

I loved the 46 defense when it first reared its angry head. I applauded the Wildcat package. I was applauding passing the ball 70 percent of the time when Bill Parcells was winning titles running 65 percent of the time. Oh yeah, I also love the shovel pass, the quarterback draw, the safety and corner blitz and God bless Dick LeBeau and his Fire Zone.

So have we established that I like the unusual approach?

That is one reason I like Brian Daboll. The man isn't afraid to try different stuff.

This year, you've seen the Dolphins line up their entire offensive line on the right side of the center and try to out-flank the defense with a run to the strong side. You've seen Flea-flicker Wildcat plays on the first series of the game.

On Sunday you saw left tackle Jake Long split out wide as an eligible receiver who was really one very, very big blocking flanker for a receiver screen. No, the play didn't work because the timing was terrible. But when the Dolphins lined up, I just about fell off my chair with glee.

It was different. What can I say?

That willingness to embrace something different isn't the only reason I like Daboll. Let's face it, he was ripped for how terrible the Browns were scoring points last year. Dolphins fans were screaming at Tony Sparano for trying to improve his offense by hiring the guy who ran one of only two offenses in the NFL that scored fewer points than Miami last year.

Yes, Cleveland was 31st in the NFL in scoring. The Dolphins were 30th. But despite that seemingly fair point, Daboll has injected some life into the Miami offense this year.

With Daboll guiding him, Matt Moore has shown steady improvement. And the Miami offense that was 30th in scoring (just ahead of Cleveland) is tied for 22nd this year while the Browns are 28th.

Back in Cleveland, meanwhile, quarterback Colt McCoy has seemingly regressed this year after playing surprisingly well under Daboll last year.

So props to Daboll for everything but this: As he explains in the video below, he ran the tackle eligible screen last year also. Except it apparently worked there. (Turn up the volume, the sound is admittedly poor.)

Kris @8:28,

I don't know IF Dying Breed (YG) was simply kidding to see who'd agree with that post or had been seriously drinking before he posted it.

Of course the line between the posters at the SS and TMH is getting blurry. We are winning.

Most Fans are fair-weather Ones. And it's being proved right here, in Miami.

Its has been a long season!...

Yet I cant wait for every sunday to see my beloved Dolphins. Yet I cant help but think about our next draft and head coach.

I have read many negative things about my boy Matt Barkely and cant help but think most of my fellow Phin fans hate any QB from USC.
That my freinds is a mistake.

Sure I hate the Jets and their QB but again he is only in his 3rd season and quite frankly I feel it has been the defense that has let them down.
There is also talk that all SC qb's have been a bust, again non sense.

But here is the kicker Matt Barkely might be the best SC qb to come out of that great program in last decade and half.

The guy can flat play and has played in a pro style offense since day one. Matt has improved every year, and this year was a DOOZY!

40TD! wow but what sets him apart from Sanchez, Palmer, Cassell is he can throw well on the run and can scramble very well and run.

I've watched every game hes played this year and last. The difference I see is that he has cut down his mistakes and gotten better throwing on the run.

I have only seen Robert Griffin 111 play one game and looked good, but up until this year I didnt even know who he was.

IMO Barkey is as good as Andrew Luck and true hope since Luck will be the first player taken in the draft that the Dolphins target and pick Barkely.
The other player I like and have seen play 3 times is the QB from Oklahoma State, Brandon Weeden, has a strongest arm I've seen this year and is very poised in the pocket.

Barkley is in the mold of Aaron Rodgers and Weeden is a Brady clone with a stronger arm this dude can rip it!

So thats my two cents good luck and see ya sunday.
Dolphins4life out!

Dolphins finish 5-11 or 6-10.

Dolphins draft a right tackle.

Dolphins keep Tony Sparano as head coach.

Dolphins4life,

Given the under achieving was of the USC Q.B's in the NFL (Palmer) and the overrated ones (Leinert, Sanchez) I was ready before hand to dislike Barkely but in having watched him more than any of the high profile College prospects he's made a believer of me.

I have seen some of RG111 this year and feel he has immense upside but Barkely I believe the more PRO ready given he plays in a Pro set system, although don't discount RG111 at some point maybe being given his off the charts ability being VERY special when he learns to play in a conventional Pro set.

Weeden is interesting but in the 2nd Rd. were he probably falls because of the age factor a nearly 30 year old rookie with a high 1st Rd. pick is a huge gamble.

In my opinion the one guy in this group that is more hype than anything is Landry Jones, I've seen him a few times and he always seems to be throwing short passes that his skill players turn into long plays and his OL gives him enough time to order a Pizza back there. I'm thinking he could be a Joey Harrington hype machine.

OHHHH BOY there goes Kris again or should i say krissy.....sissy

Dolfan since I was 9 yrs old in 66 and big fan of Daboll. I could tell in games like CLE , Den and DAL when he was handcuffed. DABS helped Bush become a complete RB the last few weeks than he has ever been.

OK guys....I'm out.

Good talk....enjoy the game Sunday.

Eagles victory 24-17.

Craig,

You are wrong. Miami will win this game. I believe it will be close (as per Dallas) but this coming Sunday will add another W to the Fin record.

I really don't believe in the "spy" theory, but more in the sharp-shooter mentality.

I hope our entire D has Vick in the crosshairs, and he goes out in the first quarter with his ribcage caved in.

Off to the wharf. Heard the fish were biting...

I suppose the trollers will be here at any second.

Rats! I just heard Ron Zook was fired at Illinois. I'm sure Ross will replace me now. Gotta win 5 in a row! Maybe he'll replace that creepy Ireland with Zook?

Wow!! A GulfD sighting been a while Bro!

Bien escrito compay. At first I was critical of Daboll, I mean who wouldn't considering his past and Miami's condition at the time of his arrival? Without a doubt, he's done an exceptional job and has made the offense fun to watch and clearly the players are havin a blast as of late.

fin4life,

I have kept abreast of Mando's blog, and read most of the comments since I last signed in.

I was being trolled and trashed by someone that even created their own, "blue" GulfDolphin name.

However, the troller put his, "blue" named GulfDolphin in TypePad, whereas, my true identity is at the wwwwmyspace link.

I want to make that distinction.

The other (and most notable) difference is that the queer whom trolls me, usually posts some faggotted, anti-dolphin remark that makes my blood boil.

Wide open the sound sucks...from the podium...get it fixed!!!

fin4life,

I have posted here exactly six times the past two weeks. Mostly to throw in an opinion, and acknowledge Odin. Hey Bro...

Call it: Swimming beneath the troller's depthfinder.

Anyways, GOoo MiAMI!

Period

GulfD,

Good to know will call the troll on it if I happen to catch any funny posts with your name on it. Happen to agree about the Fins looking good this Sunday. The Philly OL has been swiss cheese this year if we can contain the perimeter and not let Vick get outside especially to his left then he becomes more one dimensional than people think. I actually feel that more than spying Vick you need to keep the quicker Burnett on McCoy to contain the screen pass were I feel there the most dangerous, also keep the FS deep in a sort of cover 2 if you will on Desean Jackson whose game has been off this year given his mind is more on the payday he didn't get instead of the game. There front 7 has been suspect especially their LB's. I like our ability to run in this match up, in short we should be able to be the more physical of the two teams at the point of attack on the line of srimmage.

oh god

fin,

I agree. I want to add that the offence (now streamlinng) is going to utilyze our passing even more this Sunday. I hope we use the play action on first down. Alot.

Although I am not very keen on trickery, I pray we try something unique at least twice. Not a stupid fake punt, mind you, but something in the lines of a fake double reverse, deep throw to Gates, or Marshall.

Gotta go bro, dream about all those lovly Dolphin cheerleaders1

Man Oden, I Thought your constant 17 hours of posting yesterday You would have givin us a break.

Sparano would probably be the hottest hc prospect, should we fire him, everywhere in the nfl except Miami. Be oh so careful what you wish for!

I hardly think it is worth the argument. People like winners and this organization has failed miserably to put forth a winner for a long time.

long sentence.

It would be different if this team was in the midst of a run of two or so losing season preceeded by 4 or 5 years of winning seasons but seeing as though that is not the case I would hardly characterize anyone who has lost interest in the team and is "waiting in the wings" for them to turn it around before regaining interest a fair-weather fan.

New England also has two first round picks this year. It will be interesting to see if Belichik stays put or trades down to accumulate more picks. They acquired the pick from New Orleans in a trade during the 2011 draft. They also acquired an additional 2nd round pick during the draft in a trade with Oakland. So, they have 2 firsts and 2 seconds, again.
There's a lot of talent in the draft if a good number of juniors declare. Last year there was a record 56 underclassmen that declared for the draft.
If this draft comes close to that it could be one of the deepest draft classes in history.

Should a good coach be good at evaluating his own talent? Should he know who his best players are or should he play favoritism?

In Moore's four wins as a starter, he's thrown seven touchdowns, one interception and has a 110.1 passer rating.

Does anybody really believe Moore was given a chance to compete?

Bye Tony, you know nothing.

Those changes made by the Eagles to their starting LB's mean they want more speed outside. Wary of Reggie Bush breaking containment, other.

I believe that now is not the time to criticize anybody in the organization as it takes away from whatever + the Team is achieving. Later.

oscar

Here in America, it is ALWAYS the right time to criticize or express ones opinion. Always.

mijo, I have been in America longer and know about It more than you could ever comprehend. I'm talking about discretion and not freedom of expression, specially on this Day.

Fines. Rodger Goodell and the liberal sports media are turning pro football into the Peter Pan football league. You want a more nice, not so violent pro football game and it just doesnt work. Players wear helmets for protection, sometimes they get a concusion. What are we to do says the liberal media, oh we cant have a blow to the head, we cant have two people blocking one man at once,,,its against the law. The liberal sports media types have NEVER played the game but boy to they make money writting sh** about the game they know nothing about. Kinda like the President, he has all but ruined this country and the media will ruin pro football. Football is a hitting, violent game. Dont like it, dont watch it,,,go away.

Oscar.

You know absolutely nothing about me. Here on the blog is not the place to share my life story. But I will tell you I have led a very full life in terms of education, work, traveling, and living abroad. Not to mention I am born and raised in the USA, have lived all over the country, and nobody can tell me they know it better than me. That is both arrogant and ignorant on your part.

So lets not be judging others you know nothing about.

The day it is not a good time to speak your opinion or criticize, is the day the America as we know it no longer exists.

Here in America, we have no rules, barriers or politically correct times when opinions are welcome. It is Un-American to not welcome them at all times. Founding father, Mr. Thomas Jefferson gave me that piece of wisdom.

(Oscar I hope you have learned something today)

Here in THIS country, we have a saying "No Ticket, No Laundry"

I'm concerned about a Chinaman who thinks it's wise to come to a business meeting carrying automatic weapons. Because in this country, it don't add inches to your dick, you get a life sentence for it..

Hate Bart Scott....

Love the Bart Scott "CAN'T WAIT"...commercial.....

Hey kris,

Back at you from yesterday. I agree that if a new FO comes in, the chances of either coordinator sticking around becomes very slim. In most cases, they are changed.

Still though, let's just assume for a minute Ross is not a complete idiot and has done his homework. If his own personal consultants view the OC and DC as valuable as we do, he could very well insist that any new coach has to keep them on. Just saying its not out of the realm of possibility. Many candidates would gladly accept that stipulation if it meant an opportunity to get the HC position.

As always with a big mess, its fun to watch how things play out.

Ross just announced a game day stadium give away.

The first 5000 fans through the gates will receive free WereWolve masks. All Miami Fans are being encouraged to bring your own.

I think Ross is trying create a game day atmosphere at the stadium. Wear your Wolf Masks and join in the Barking, Howling and Jeering every time Vick steps on the field.

I'm liking it, it beats the BeJesus out of JeBow day!

Devil, I agree that it's not out of the realm of possiblitites. I think you're mistaken in that many canidates will gladly except these conditions.

ANY stipulations, ESPECIALLY this one will/would severely limit desireablity. I for one just don't think it happens. If SpOrano goes, so to goes Daboll and Nolan. I'm not completely positive, but I don't believe this scenario has ever played out in the NFL. I remember once or twice when an OC was kept, but that's it. I don't ever remember a DC staying on with a new regime. Interim Coaches aside of course.

What's more, there will be 2 to 3 other teams, most likely, looking for Head Coaches. There won't be any stipulations with taking those jobs. Thus making them much more appealing.

Just my Two Cents..................

In have two cats, CoCo and Cha Cha, and a toy poodle called Mr. Whiffenpoof.

Can't come near Diamond Lil. I'll bite 'ya like a COBRA.

Smell me. Absorb my elegance.

Diamond Lil says "Go Timberwolves!"

Agree Odin.....

But it did happen in KC.....if I remember correctly.....the head coach....Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weis were APPOINTED as the CHEIFS OC/DC a few years back.....

But I agree...that is a hard stipulation for anybody with TRUE NFL CREDIBILITY to swallow....HC wise...

Odin, will you be making up another fantasy girl this evening or is today going to be full shut-in mode?

If it's a girl may I suggest the "librarian" type. Sure, it's a cliche but always sexy regardless. You could even concoct some nonsensical fable about meeting her in the "fiction section" y'know?

ALOCO, I now appoint you President of the:

PS: Don't forget your WereWolf Mask tommorow!

BTW, I don't know what happened to Dying Breed last night. The last time I saw him, he was looking for his Trench Coat and Guns, muttering something about a Harry Cable Guy ;)

odinesye

I wouldn't bet my money they would stay in the event of a coaching change, but I'd still give it around a 20% shot in this teams situation.

There are only a precious few HC openings each year and how many assistants and coordinators have been at this for decades waiting for that rare golden opportunity? Way more than the few names that get thrown around. If the candidate happens to like those guys and feels he can work with them, then...its not that far fetched.

However to DA's point....(and mine).....

Ross is getting what he wants (more exciting "O")......and DaBoll seems to be the direct result of that.....

I think Daboll has an "O" that is easily translatable to QBs......Henne Looked better...and and Moore is playing perhaps the best ball of his life.....

and Cleveland "O" is still more of the same....so on the surface...DaBoll is a plus...and not a minus.....

I just hate to see the NEXT BIG THING......walk off our club after ONE YEAR.....

ODEN YOU POSTED FOR 17 HOURS , 12PM THURSDAAY TO 5 AM FRIDAY MORNING,DONT YOU REMERMBER OR WERE YOU TO DRUNK?
