Tony Sparano fired:The press conference

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and general manager Jeff Ireland sat side-by-side at a desk in front of the Dolphins main meeting room moments ago and announced the firing of coach Tony Sparano and hiring of interim coach Todd Bowles.

Neither Sparano nor Bowles were at the press conference.

First things first, Ross confirmed my report from Sunday that Ireland will remain the general manager going forward. So secure is Ireland that Ross said the next coach must be able to work with Ireland and not have a conflict with Ireland.

Ross spent a lot of time praising Sparano, "who has really been a wonderful person and done a wonderful job with the Miami Dolphins," the owner said. Nonetheless, Ross cited "the best interest of the Miami Dolphins," as the reason for firing Sparano now.

Ross said there has been much "distraction and speculation" regarding whether Sparano would stay or go. "I think in the interest of the football team and the development of this team,' Ross said, "this is the time to make this change."

Ross said the final decision to fire Sparano now came this morning. He said Sparano "wasn't happy about" the decision to fire him now. Having said that, the Dolphins knew long ago that Sparano was likely out at the end of the season and Sunday's 26-10 loss to Philadelphia sealed the coach's fate.

Ross said the Dolphins record is "not indicative of what the team is capable of. The foundation is there to build a winning team."

Ross said Bowles will be interviewed for the head coaching job once his interim time is complete. Bowles, who is black, would help the Dolphins fulfill the NFL's Rooney Rule requirement for filling coaching vacancies.

"I'd like to find a young Don Shula if that's possible," Ross said.

Ross said he has not had conversations with Carl Peterson relative to his friend taking over the Dolphins as an executive vice president of football operations as ESPN report.

It was interesting to me that Ireland was so prominent in this presser. He has not spoken to the media this year -- a fact that has torqued me off quite a bit, as readers of this blog know.

Ireland will be part of the search for the head coach.

"Obviously, you're looking for experience and the best candidate out there," Ireland said. "I want someone who's been in the trenches before -- someone with some of the same qualities I saw in Tony -- a guy who is a tireless worker, a guy who understands both offense and defense."

Ireland had not until today taken responsibility publicly for the 4-9 team that Miami is today. Yes, Ross believes the team is more talented than the record. But, come on! They're 4-9!

"We all feel responsibility for what happened today, we all do," Ireland said. "This is a game of winning and when you don't win, you feel responsible for that. I have responsibility in it. Mr. Ross has responsibility in it. Our players have responsibilty. Ultimately, Tony had the ultimate responsibility."

Ireland said he's "not happy about being part of this decision that Mr. Ross and I made together." But added, he's looking to finding the next coach for the franchise.

TradeDown Jeff stays. This is the dumbest franchise in sports.

for all you dan marino hopefuls******
Marino was offered the GM job a few years back and when he saw what kind of hours he was going to have to put in he quit!!! So mark him off yr list

you don't fire the GM unil after the draft

Sparano was not a very bright man:
Miami's only chance to win the Dallas
game was to let them score quickly
and leave Miami with nearly 3 minutes
to try to score for the win...

Instead, Sparano chose to try to stop
Dallas from making yardage FROM a
line where Dallas has already won the
game with a simple fieldgoal~!!!!!!!

He could have let them score the TD
because Miami needed to score a TD
to win in any case! This tells you
Sparano wasn't thinking straight about
actually trying to win that game at all.

I don't know who's going to be the next
coach, but I doubt it'll be Cowher
because ... he's just not stupid. Sorry.

S D Rodrian

The problem with Ireland is he was a scout and still thinks like one. He doesn't know how to build a team from the ground up, people say he was always under Parcells tutelage while others argue he had input. If he was Parcells pupil then that isn't a positive but a problem in itself given Parcells never really ran a F.O. either with any efficiency and didn't have a clue how to build through the draft either.

In Parcells time with the Giants he had no control what so ever those teams were built by Floyd Reese. In N.E. Bob Kraft had a F.O. in place which Parcells constantly clashed with leading to him referring to 96 1st Rd. pick Terry Glenn as "SHE" in a press confrence. He later wielded control with the Jets but really didn't draft anybody of note but built that team through F.A. with the likes of Curtis Martin, Bryan Cox, V.Testaverde, Jimbo Elliot, K.Byars and a host of former Pats and Giants ect...

In his final Coaching stop Dallas J.Jones ran things and the final straw was Jones force feeding him T.O. when he walked. So the question really is at what point in his Coaching career did Parcells ever truely build a team without stop gap F.A.'s who had history with him from other franchises?? You analyze his tenure in Miami were some drafts were almost exclusively dedicated to two positions tops instead of addressing multiple needs and you see that the great Tuna was pretty clueless in the franchise building dept. himself.

The draft Ireland ran this last offseason seemed safe with no risks being taken even with a pressing need at Q.B. and an enticing talent like R.Mallett sitting there were the value could be had Rd.3 I'm sorry but the fact Ireland was prepared for this moment by Parcells works against him not for him.

Will someone be able to break Jeff Ireland's addiction to dumpster diving for Dallas Cowboy's rejects?

fin4life--

I would love to make penguin cakes with you and then cuddle naked.

Ross fired Morano cause he got scared that the chiefs are gonna get a head start on getting Jeff Fisher..so THANK YOU HALEY 4 GETTING FIRED TODAY!

WOW, wasn't expecting this one at this time!

Yeah, I guess they don't want to tamper.

They fire Sparano but keep Ireland? It wasn't Sparano that drafted Pat White, Chad Henne, Sean Smith, Nolan Carroll or signed Mark Columbo. It was under the Ireland rule. Yes Parcells was there too but so was Ireland. Don't be surprised to see Ireland look to Dallas to hire the next coach..ie Rob Ryan to head the list. After all, we have all their cast offs, thanks to Ireland. Ireland sat at the conference today like a cat who got away with eating the mouse. What prominent coach will want a Pacells holdover? Now the Fins start from scratch, yet again. New schemes, new coordinators..maybe going back to a 4-3? So now we have to wait another few years before there is continuity? And bringing in Carl Peterson in a football role? He sure was successful in KC. Now I Know how Cub fans feel. Always having a team that could never quite win and never will. Yet I remain loyal since 1970. What's wrong with this picture.

Ultimately Sparano did himself in. He had no feel for calling a game. His decision when up 7-0 yesterday with a 4th down on the Eagles 35 to kick an extremely difficult 55 yard field goal changed all the momentum in the game, let Philly right back into the game with great field position and deflated a defense which up to that point was playing lights out. That kind of poor decision making will ruin any team. He seemed like a nice guy and a good leader, but he kept setting this team up to fail.

Forget Todd Bowles who will add nothing to this team, or, the empty seats at JRS.

Stephen Ross wants the stadium filled and I'm proposing the folowing:

1. Fire all the coaches.
2. Bring back, as coaches, all the former Dolphins who exceeded at their postions, i.e. The Dan, or, The Bob at QB; The Dwight at center; Larry, Jim and Nat at running back; The Paul at wide receiver; The Nick at linebacker, etc. etc. You get the picture and you gotta love it.

Everyone will flock to the stadium to see the former greats lose but have a great time.

Is Ireland's lead interview question going to be "Is your mother a prostitute?"...Good grief, cut this moron loose too!!! He was more responsible than Sparano for the failures of this regime!!

From the Ashes the Phoenix will rise!

Not sure how this works out. Can they start talking to Head Coaches currently active in the Game? If that's not allowed, then it points away from Fischer and towards Cowher.

I say they didn't fire Ireland because they don't want to start from scratch again...so Ireland stays and leaves slowly..this guy knows people don't want him here.

Not sure how this works out. Can they start talking to Head Coaches currently active in the Game? If that's not allowed, then it points away from Fischer and towards Cowher.

Fisher is not coaching right now. Another clueless blogger

We wanted Tony gone and he's gone!
We wanted Henne gone and he's gone!
We wanted Tuna gone and he's gone!
We wanted Henning gone...he's gone!

Ireland...that's a different story, let's see this through with Peterson calling the shots.

Things are looking up my friends!

Here's to 4-12 and a top 5 pick next April!

How is Fisher currently active in the game?

And, no, you cannot talk to coaches under contract elsewhere. That is tampering and any team doing it will be penalized by losing draft picks.

From a brief interchange that occurred between Marino and Cowher in their pre-Game show about 2 mo. ago, I kinda gathered that Cowher was the Man.

Give me Cowher and a top 5 pick next April and I'll show you a team that is in contention for a playoff spot!

oh god Ireland is in charge of selecting the next coach? Who would want to come and work with Ireland. Rob Ryan is one but who else?

Maybe someone can explain why Cowher hasn't taken a HC position in several years now. If you think he is waiting for the right opportunity, think again. There have been several openings and he hasn't interviewed for even one of them.

Cowher appears to be done with coaching.

Then it's Cowher and Fischer. What you People think?

AMAZING HOW DYING BREED,YESTERDAYS GONE,FLIPPER BREED HAS NOW POSTED FOR 7 STRIGHT HOIURS AND STILL NOT SAID ANYTHING.

OSCAR, CHINA MAN COWER WILL BE COACHIING APE CITY DONKYS, FISHER WILL TAKE OVER CHINA MAN COWERS SUB SHOP IN PITTBURG.

Thanks Tony, for being a good person... But you were a below average coach. We need a winner here in Miami. Polish up on your o-line coaching because that has gone to hell also. then maybe you may be a nfl o-line coach again.

oh, please take columbo with you

I DON'T SEE ANY REASON TO FIRE HIM NOW UNLESS YOU ARE SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING THIS TODD BOWLES GUY, WHO I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT, BUT THEN AGAIN NOBODY HEARD OF TOMLIN EITHER, i GUESS AND THIS IS ONLY A GUESS SINCE I AM NOT IN THE LOOP WITH THE OWNER THAT HE WANTS TO TRY TO KEEP SOME CONTINUITY AND I CAN SEE WHY IT IS NOT LIKE THEY TOTALLY SUCK OR ANYTHING A GREAT COACH LIKE SHULA WOULD HAVE HAD THIS TEAM IN THE PLAYOFF HUNT OR THE PLAYOFFS NO DOUBT , NOT SAYING THEY DON'T NEED SOME PLAYERS BUT I DO FEEL THAT THEY HAVE ENOUGH TO BE COMPETING FOR A PLAYOFF SPOT AND THAT HAD TO FALL ON TONY

Ireland should have carried Sparano's boxes out of the building before Ireland himself was escourted off the premises by security. Ireland is a rat and must have compromising pictures of Ross to keep his job.

Joe Robbies Corpse

In favor of Jeff Fisher is the fact that he might be easier to "work" alongside Ross and Ireland than Cowher might be. In favor of Cowher is that he might be described as a Star Coach, which is what Ross and now Petersen want.

I feel dirty after reading unclean words of Ireland and Ross

As long as we stay away from any more dumb Eye-Taliano coaches! Let them stick to something they know like meat balls.

Imagine the publicity, if all the finfans in Miami would make signs demanding the removal of Ireland and form a picket line in front of the Dolphins office building. I think Ross would get the picture really quick. But then again, he probably wouldn't care anyway. I'm worried what will become of this team, an earlier poster said it best, "one boneheaded decision after another", and as I see it, no end in sight.

Carlito from golfito is back!

What good coach wants to come here if he can't hire his own GM? They are going to find a puppet just like Sparano was. This move makes no sense to fire Sparano now people on the outside see how he was treated and won't come here just can't see Cowher or Fisher coming here as long as Ireland is still here.Who is going to trust Ireland he is dirty?

Fans should realize there are more than three coaches to choose from.

Fans should realize even the big names do not guarantee success. No SB winning coach has ever won it again with another team.

Were Tomlin, McCarthy, Payton big names before they got their first HC position? Nope. Yet they won the last three SB's.

The same way most here feel about Ross and Ireland, I also feel. I don't like their ways. But, first, Football ownership and management is not a popularity contest and the ultimate aim is to make $, and to make $ in It the Team has to win. Second, we have to coexist with all sort of Animals.

Chuckie is secure with his microphone and no sideline pressure.

Cowher deamds complete control and a piece of the team. How many partners does it take to make a team?

More firings are on the way.

Let's wait since we have only three more games to lose.

I think that Ireland and Sparano were both subpar and deserve to be fired. But Ireland was worse in my opinion. Last year we saw one of the worst displays of quarterbacking ( by Henne) that I have ever seen. Yet he was our starting QB thus year, and we drafted no one This isn't saying much, but we know that Matt Moore is much better than Henne. Other failings: Columbo, Jerry, Dez Bryant, no premier tight end, will Allen IR last year and cutting him this year,

The Dolphins are the hardest team to continue to lose with. Make a f decision and get a qb, yes qb,qb,qb,qb,qb,qb.....We havent been a legitmate contender in a decade. The heat are spending money and the marlins are spending $. Hey Ross spend some dough. Scared $ dont make $. All good teams in this league have a good franchise qb. Football a little more difficult than real estate, hey ross !!!

Hey.. How about this one.

Since there is the Dolphin - Cowboy connection.. I hope Ross trades Ireland for Dez Bryant.

Hell, we'll even throw in a few Cowboy rejects to sweeten the pot.

All jokes aside, we're in BIG TOUBLE. Not because of SpOrano's firing, we all knew this was coming. But SERIOUSLY, I'm CONVINCED we're in for a lot more bad before we see any good. That is, if you accept Mando's reports and the Presser at face value.

The Problem as I see it is spelled out in these few excerpts:

1. So secure is Ireland that Ross said the next coach must be able to work with Ireland and not have a conflict with Ireland.
--------------------------------------------

TRANSLATION: This pretty much gives Ireland "Carte Blanche". It means the next Head Coach will have to be prepared to be a bigger "Ireland Lackey" than Ireland was for Parcells. This means, when Ireland makes up his mind on a pick, when his ego and narcacism takes precedence, the new Coach will have to play the guy and stick with him REGARDLESS. Recent examples of this are Henne(even Matt Moore to a certain extent), Fasano(instead of Olsen, Miller, Boss, Shockey or any of the others in the drafts). Colombo, Carpenter. Olshansky and all the other Dallas retreads that Irelands ego wouldn't let go of.
-----------------------------------------------

2.

Ireland said he's "not happy about being part of this decision that Mr. Ross and I made together." But added, he's looking forward to finding the next coach for the franchise.
-----------------------------------------------

Translation: This means, in addition to not being able to find a Franchise QB, A pass rusher to compliment Wake, a Free Safety, a Right Tackle, this means Ross is trusting this Dolt to find us a Head Coach? WTF is that?

We needed a true no.1 WR worse than ANYTHING in the world and this idiot couldn't even figure out how to conduct an interview with the Top Prospect coming out? How the FVCK do we trust him to interview canidates for the all important Head Coaching Job?
-----------------------------------------------

Dick Marks,

If Cowher deamds complete control and a piece of the team... HELL, give that to him..

I mean, Ross is selling partnerships to people like Marc Anthony and the rest.

It's worth it.

Take a look at the standings. All the teams ahead of us in the draft need QB's. We will not get one of the top 4 QB's in this draft.

Jets going to the play offs again. We are always 3 years and 2 players away.

I believe Ireland very possibly is a talented Draft Man Period That's why Petersen has come along.

Havent drafted a QB in the first round since Marino, before him it was that Griese guy. Youd think these knuckleheads, for all the money they get paid could figure that much out.

One recent move that Tony made was very dirty, self-centered and a straight up dick move, almost extortion-like and showed his true colors. Recently when the talk became heavier concerning his impending firing, he told the players that if he goes, many of them will be gone too. It got the attention of many of the players. Naturally they perked up out of fear and insecurity and there was a temporary improvement in play, mistaken by some media writers in SoFla and reported as a sign the players were standing up for and demonstrating support for their HC. Ireland said it today, they are looking for a coach who's experienced, been in the trenches. Odd thing about the whole thing is Ireland's miscues with Ross and "the search' caused us to have to endure another torturous season with T Spo. At least Ireland admitted and accepted today that he and Ross were also responsible for the failures in Miami.

So this is done! Now go out there and trade for Peyton Manning using our 1st rounder as bait.

In return, we get Indy's 2nder along with Peyton; this gives us 2 second-rounders and 3rd-rounder in the first day of draft. We can fill the need for a rush LBer, get secondary, TE and RB help. OL needs can be addressed via free agency. Please no more "False Starts" or "BS" draft picks, please draft smartly,

And if the above suggestion makes a lot of sense, and management does not like it; just draft every available QB in the draft with every pick..... Strength might come in NUMBERS...

***** MY DAILY RANT*****

I have been calling for Armando to be suspended and/or fired along with Sparano. The reason why is that the Sparano firing came at 3pm and none and I mean NONE, not even Armando with all his so called sources, inside people and other fantasy people, didn't report anything until over an hour later which then became old news.

ESPN, NFL network all were on air reporting the firing as well as the interim HC name. Even as Armando reported an hour later he still didn't mention that the interim HC was Tod. He wobbled on this one.

IMO, Armando was asleep at the wheel on a breaking story that he, the Harold, Sentinel missed. hell i knew about it up here in the boonies of NY.

I'm not picking on him but WTF man. The most sought out breaking news that all of have been waiting to hear all season and beyond and he missed it. Shame on him.

OK, let's continue.

I been saying that Ross will transfer Peterson to Football Czar.

The reason why he will do that officially (which nothing official about it) is that he will be Ross HIRED GUN.

Ross wants Ireland gone but calls him his friend. Well as the interview showed... Ireland said that Sparano is his friend and that he and Ross just had to fire him.

Now, back to the hired Gun... Ross will be actively behind the scenes talking to a few potential replacements for HC. At the top of his list IS Cowher.

What Ross is doing is feeling out if Cowher would be comfy working with Ireland as GM. If cowher says no, then KABOOM... Ross has Peterson pull the trigger and Ireland is GONE.

If Cowher says yes to keeping Ireland BUT, Cowher wants all control over drafting and personal decisions and others. Then Ross would put the Gun away until needed.

After all, Ross is ireland's friend and he didn't become a billionaire by being a dumb ass.

Ireland... Look out because your NEXT.

That's my rant for today.

Silly nyg. Very silly. You must be very young or not very experienced in business.

Firing Sporano now is a direct result of Jacksonville and KC firing theirs. If the Fnns are gonna try to be in the mix for some decent quality coachng candiates, they need to be active now to show enough prospect. He probably would have stayed until end of December of the heads had not already begun to roll.

I do worry, though, of how to attract HC's if a GM is anchored, and who may not be HC's type or choice--THAT is a potential huge problem.

Sporano had many faults as HC, but he tried. Keeping Ireland (or locking so hard on him at this time)may be another bad idea---but, unfortunately, recently typical of this team's management.

Sparano leaving only solves half of the problem. Ireland, Mueller, Spielman....the list of failures in the personnel department go on and on.....

odinseye at 07:59 PM,

Great post and translation. I said it before and I'll say it again.. Ireland will not pick a QB in the first round. it's not in his blood.

He will trade for some VALUE picks and look for Acorns.

On another note.. i believe that Patten will be a Dolphin next season if the colts draft luck. I see them doing that because they will owe manning over $30 million to keep him.

"G", I agree with your view on Petersen, but I believe his main responsibility will be to fill seats at the Stadium; he has a good track record at that. I also believe that the Cowher thing has been a done deal for sometime now.

Dilbert.

Silly nyg. Very silly. You must be very young or not very experienced in business.

I base my opinions on the track record of Ross and ireland. He is not to be trusted in anything he says.

IRELAND SPEAKS WITH FORKED TONGUE!

Ireland needs to go!

So this is done! Now go out there and trade for Peyton Manning using our 1st rounder as bait.

No need to worry about anything in your post making sense. In fact, it's complete nonsense.

The Colts trading Manning to the Dolphins AND giving them their second-rounder in return for a #1??

Um, yeah...I guess that might happen if Stephen Ross could manage to hypnotize their entire front office.

Seriously, where do you people come up with some of this crap?
