Going further in-depth about Jason Taylor retirement

While everyone is digesting the news that Jason Taylor is retiring after Sunday's regular-season finale -- something I have been told by a Dolphins source Taylor is scheduled to confirm during a press availability today -- let me keep you guys ahead of the curve with something more to chew on and digest:

This retirement means something significant.

This retirement is something to celebrate for its nostalgia and meaning to the history of the club. But it also is meaningful in that it speaks, no, speaks is understated ... It screams the Dolphins have yet another significant hole they must fill this offseason.

Outside linebacker.

The hole is not new. It was obvious when the Dolphins drafted Koa Misi in April 2010. It was obvious when the Dolphins put in a waiver claim for Shawne Merriman in the winter of 2010, just before he was awarded to the Bills. It was obvious when the team came crawling back to the 37-year-old Taylor in July even though two seasons before the front office cryptically referred to him as a "progress stopper."

Seems Taylor wasn't a progress stopper in July, considering no young player on the roster other than Cameron Wake could rush the passer as well Taylor.

And that means this:

Misi has not developed into the pass-rusher the Dolphins hoped he'd become by now when they drafted him in the second round.

And the Dolphins will have to somehow -- either through the draft or free agency -- acquire another pass-rush threat to replace Taylor and compete with Misi.

None of this mean Misi is a bust. He is, after all, in his second season and everyone I talk to says he works hard at his craft and is seriously trying to get better. But it does say that Miami is ready to hedge its bet on Misi. The Dolphins cannot simply let Taylor retire and be confident Misi will take his repetitions and fill the production void.

They need an alternative to provide competition with Misi. They need someone else who must be better than Misi is right now and has the probability of being as 7-sack good as Taylor.

It's interesting that a 3-4 defense team must have outstanding outside linebacker play to be effective. And yet the Dolphins will go into this offseason with only one OLB (Wake) anyone has certainty will make plays on a consistent basis.

So, yeah, add a playmaking OLB as a major need for the coming offseason.

deal picks for luck!

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the new staff goes back to the 4-3 scheme. The most important thing is that whoever the next coach is, he must implement a scheme that fits the personnel and not try to force a particular scheme into play. I think that's where a lot of teams get into trouble.

IMO, the 4-3 is easier to implement in RE to personnel because this is the scheme most common in college. When they come into a 3-4 scheme, many if not most players are being asked to play out of position. How many athletic DEs have we seen converted to OLBs in a 3-4 who have failed? It happens all of the time (and seems to be happening with Misi right now).

Not to mention, a great NT is very hard to come by and is arguably the most important position in a 3-4 scheme. Ever notice that most prominent NT are aged veterans who have learned this craft along the way? Rarely do you see a true NT come out of college, they take years to develop.

Mark in T,

Colts win #1 overall, Luck it is, nothing will pry him away.

Rams win 1st overall, they "may" get the Woody for Luck. If not, they probably go Ryan Kalil to protect Bradford.

If they pick Luck, then they maybe interested in trading Bradford straight up for Jake Long. If Indy gets #1 overall, more likely the Rams pick Ryan Kalil rather than pursue a trade involving Jake Long. Long's nfl wear and tear's beginning to show.

Moving Dansby would not be robbing Peter or Paul you can find a good ILB free angency or draft

Switching to a 4 3 also makes Soliai expendable.

They have a million 4 3 defensive tackles on the team. Starks, McDaniel, odrick. And that is with letting all of Langford, Soliai, and merling walk.

Wake is a natural at defensive end. And Burnett and dansby are fits in either system

Yesterday's Gone

I like it when you talk about "woody."

Luck is the first pick regardless of who is drafting. Long only has trade value in this scenario if St. Louis drafts luck.

On switching back to a 4-3,

The team would have less needs and priorities to resign a guy like Soliai.

DE - Cam Wake (he is undersized a little for a 4-3 but so is Freeney, Trent Cole, Cliff Avril etc etc). Wake would still produce sacks and go all out.

DE - Kendall Langford he is 6'6 290 lbs and he isn't a speed rusher and the long term answer but would fill in decently.

DT - They could resign Soliai but he would have more value and get paid more for a team in a 3-4. Odrick and Starks could be penciled as starters and McDaniels as rotation guy.

OLB - Burnett has come on and had some moments in the mini revival. He is capable of playing weakside LB.

MLB - Karlos Dansby he is versatile enough to play outside or inside but he gets paid like an ILB not a 4-3 OLb.

OLB - Misi and why not? He isn't a very good pass rusher and seems to be targeted in the run game but he isn't really cut for 3-4 OLB so give him first crack it. Miami would have a hole there at 3-4 anyway. Draft a guy 3rd or 4th round to compete.

Or they could switch back to a 4-3 defense. Never been a fan of this 3-4 thing. And the Dolphins are pretty stocked on the defensive line. Starks could move back inside with Solai or if they let him walk, whomever they pick up in fa or the draft. Dansby stays in the middle, Burnett to the weak side and Wake on the strong side. Misi backing up Wake and Burnett.

This seems the simpler more logical solution to me.

jeffro,

Finding a good olb or ilb this offseason. What's the difference?

Either way it better be a really good player. Move Dansby to olb and you may see Crowder resigned by the next hc. LOL

Phins78,

Wake could play strongside and still get plenty of pass rush opportunities similar to what Von Miller does in a 4-3 in Denver.

I think he would be fine at DE though. The way he is built like a tank and coming off the edge. Guys like Trent Cole and Avril are his size and I think he would be much better then them guys

the conditioning coach needs to be fired at seasons end!!! We have had way too many key injuries at bad times. We need someone to get in here and kick some butt on thes lazy millionaires

Just read a few posts, guess I'm not alone. And what does that mean? Well any time the fans see something that is plainly obvious the team misses it. That means they will stick with the 3-4 while Ireland drafts another LB that is a question mark and will need years of development.

I don't have a problem with Ireland's free agency moves, wish he would have landed a tight end in FA but I'm not sure what the thinking was with the organization on that one. Looks like they knew Clay had the talent but expected him to come along quicker, same with Thomas. And I guess that's the problem with Ireland. His free agency moves seem to be solid while his draft moves are suspect.

Unfortunately to build a winning team you need to get your draft right. Why is Ireland still here exactly?

ericatl,

The conditioning can be blamed on the NFL lockout and their stupid practice rules but more so that freaking practice bubble has taken away a home field advantage Miami used for years. I guess the conditioning coach can be thrown in as well

Lastly how many times do we have to wish Jason Taylor luck and say goodbye? I've done it already, two times. Not doing it again, who knows, he may change his mind and play for the Patriots to get that ring next year.

They could trade for Tebow and he could play both ways

Tebow plays both ways?
How exciting.

Nick Perry or Sam Montgomery 3-4 OlB

rams dont want luck, they will deal the pick if they get it

tebow will be out of football in a year or so, that guy is so bad.

dusty bottoms @ 4:43 -

Totally agreed. I for one can't be happier with what has happend with him and the Broncos the last couple of weeks. Living in NM, I'm pretty much in Bronco country, so I've had to listent to all of this Tebow the Messiah nonsense for quite awhile now....the shine is already fading thankfully, as he is exposed for what he is:

A genuinely good guy and all around good football player with a lot of heart....but ultimately not a franchise calibre QB. He would be an interesting guy to have on a roster for trick plays and the like, but that's about it.

agree wolf, no way will he start at qb after this year

dusty,

You're not exactly a guy who should be in the prediction business are you? Henne would never start another GM in the NFL, Ireland and Sparano were both out at the end of last year, Cowher was in. You're not EXACTLY hitting on two many of these, are you?.....I guess if you keep making predictions you'd get one right at some point.

It's a good thing you're not in the weather business or you would have been out of your job a long time ago.

Btw dusty,

I'm not a Tebow fan by any means but I'll take some action on your claim that Tebow won't start another game after this year. They guy's only taken his team from being 1-4 to 8-7, with a shot at the playoffs. That kind of stuff, generally gets you invited back the following season.

I'll let you know where you can forward my winnings....thanks.

yup craig eveyrthing i said happened, even my 4-12 prediction was close, and your playoff prediction, well, hilarious. told u sparano would be gone during the season after ross couldnt convinve any coach to take the job, wasnt like they didn try to fire them , but u already knew that. craig tebow is garbage and elway knows it. now fans may force elway to go with him to start the season, but he wont last much past that. u and everyone else knows tebow isnt an nfl qb. yes i even gave u credit for being able to see that

Koa Misi is "working hard".
When you say that a player is "working hard", it's a bit like when you say that someone is "nice": you're trying very hard to find what he's good at...but you just can't find anything...
After 2 years of football, we still don't know what Misi is good at = he's an obvious bust

I don't understand why some guys are haters about JT. He and Zack won a lot of games when we had no qb. We actually had a few winning seasons.
Give the man his due. Even if he did go to the Jets, no way that suck Sparano was going to go to bat for him with those fat turds Ireland and Parcells running the show.

agree marshall those drafts have been so bad. send misi to the bench and replace him with somebody that can actually play. 2012 im fired up for, a new qb, new staff, and a cake schedule. cant wait

NFL guys have played with torn biceps MANY times. If this game mattered, Long would almost certainly be in there.

The IR designation means nothing. It simply frees up a roster spot for someone else to get some snaps in the final game.

You guys go to 'Defcon3' over the most trivial crap. Seriously.

jt is the man, always will be. hes done alot for south florida and im sure will continue to

dusty,

But you weren't right. You told all that stuff was going to happen a YEAR ago. NONE of it happened. Yes, Sparano it gone NOW....but that's not what you said. Also, I'm not even convinced NOW that Henne will never start another game in this league. I believe he's done here but he'll play somwhere down the road. What kind of odds would you give me on that one?

whatever u want craig. he will never win a starting job, doesnt count if someones injured and he takes over. no team would ever ever want henne as a starting qb. another one u missed badly on , u kept hyping henne all the way into the season. guy is complete garbage

DUSTY BOTTOMS.........

TELL ME WHAT JT DID FOR SOUTH FLORIDA ,PLEASE ...........

dusty,

All I wanted was for him to get a chance to play away from Dan Henning. ANY QB in this league deserves a proper opportunity to show what he's got. Under your scenario Drew Brees would NEVER have gotten his shot and would have been dumped before showing who he is today.

Henne got that chance...I'm completely fine with moving on from him now.

WE WILL NOT BE DRAFTING LUCK OR BARKLEY (HE IS STAYING AT USC). SO WE NEED TO DRAFT COURTNEY UPSHAW FROM THE TIDE. ABSOLUTELY THE MOST DOMINANT PASS RUSHER IN THIS DRAFT. WE CAN THEN DRAFT A QB IN THE SECOND WITH FOLES OR WEEDEN. OR GO OT IN 2ND AND PICK UP KEENUM IN THE 3RD OR 4TH. WE NEED TO SERIOUSLY LOOK AT UPSHAW.

aloco he has given and raised millions of dollars for his foundation

Craig M--

I enjoyed our time together at Christmas, ESPECIALLY those amazing showers!! The nutmeg-scented soap we lathered each other's nude body with really put me in the holiday spirit!

ALoco
Did someone tell you that or did you figure that out by yourself?

Oh Man The Dolphins Has So Many Holes Coming Next Season Is Scary . Soliai is a free Agent And I Don't Really Know If He Is Worth Paying What He Wants , Langford Is A free Agent Too And He Is Worth Nothing To Me 14 tackles This Year That's Bad , Merling A Free Agent Too Worth Nothing , You Can say After Sunday We Got Mc Daniels , Odrick, And Starks On The Defensive Line That's Scary , We Need a Free Safety Badly And Very Soon We'll Need A strong Safety Too , We Need A Cornerback Too To Compete with Smith , Smith Is Ranked 104 out 107 Cornerbacks That Have Started This Year In The League , We Need A Pass Rusher Because Misi Is Not A Good One And We Also Need Depth At That Position , I Do Really Believe That Stephen Ross Will Have To Open His Wallet Next Year To Keep This Defense Decent, Now That's Only On The Defensive Side Of The Team

0-7 was a season, lol who is this clown jt best miami player on that side of the ball ever

BEANS.......... JT WAS THE LEADER OF THAT TEAM OF 1-15 ...........DUMBO

true ivan, we start with a franchise qb in april

DUST...YOU DUMB.......

MARINO IS THE BEST EVER IN THE DOLPHIN HISTORY,NOT JT RESIDED OVER THE WORST MIAMI YEARS AND WORST TEAMS .........

MARINO............ DUMBO ////////////

MARINO
MARINO

NY G...it's clear there's no other fan here that bleeds and deeper Fins colors than you, based on your taylor rant. A good thing, in my book.
Still, Parcells was a uber controlling SOB who pulled a power trip on JT, and JT had no choice AS A MAN to tell Parcells to shove it.

I'm not saying I was pleased he went to the Jets, but what better way for JT to shove it in the Tuna's face...twice a year?
Not for a MINUTE do I think JT was doing this to the FINS.
At least that's MY take. Your case was well stated, and your anger pretty scary, man!! LOL
As those in MY gen would sway, RIGHT ON, MAN!

Sorry, meant to say "any" not "and' in the first sentence.

OT, but in this era of no defense allowed by db's, Marino (with HIS receivers) would have thrown for 6k yards...easily.
With the current Fin receivers, uh uh.

said jt on that side of the ball, cant read either i see,wow dude is a mess

As much as I'd like to wax poetic about JT Mando, I got a Pit Bull Bull Mastiff with finger nail polish on his claws.

I like to Party as much as ANYONE, but right is right and wrong is just WRONG!

Happy New Years!!!!

Odin, As a new Years resolution how about never appearing on here again, Lets start the New Year B.S Free. Thanks.

Courtney Upshaw would be a good pick if the new regime stays with a 3-4. If they go to a 4-3 then Quinton Coples would be the better pick and true 4-3 DE pass rusher....of course, this is all provided we can't get a QB in the first round, which is starting to look more and more to be the case unless the Phins can make a move via trade.
