Latest on Carey, Jerry, blackout, Marshall

The Dolphins are on the field and practicing. Vernon Carey is on the field but is not practicing.

The club's starting right guard is missing his second consecutive day of preparation for Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders. Tomorrow is a big day. If Carey can do some work, his chances of playing will look much better. If he cannot practice tomorrow ... don't bank on him being ready for Sunday's game even though he said Monday he'd be ready to play.

And that would test Miami's offensive line depth. And that would test John Jerry.

Jerry is the first guy up at both right guard and tackle so if Carey cannot go, Miami would call on their second-year player.

Between you and me, it's time to call on Jerry anyway. The fact is Carey played well in spurts against the Cowboys and has done that most of this season. But the truth is Carey has been playing in spurts -- and only in spurts -- since 2009.

And the Dolphins have tolerated the inconsistency.

The team gave Carey a big contract after 2008 and the player hasn't been the same since. This season, the inconsistency led to his move from right tackle to right guard and a pay cut. Carey, 30, is unsigned for next year.

If Jerry were a good player, I'd tell you this is definitely Carey's final year in Miami. How much playing in spurts can one team take?

But the problem is Jerry so far hasn't been good enough to play in spurts himself. He started last year but it wasn't pretty. This year, he hasn't been better than Carey if you believe coaches. So he's sat and learned.

Well, it is December so it's time to stop sitting and show what you've got, in my opinion. Perhaps Carey not being available would be a blessing. Perhaps it would be an opening for Jerry to show all that he's learned and how far he's come. Obviously, it would benefit the Dolphins to know if Jerry is capable of filling the hole that an unsigned Carey would leave after this season.

Isn't that how it's supposed to work? The draft is supposed to fill in gaps and offer an orderly succession from an older veteran such as Carey to an up-and-comer such as Jerry. If the Jerry pick is correct, this would be a no-brainer.

Of course, not every pick goes quite according to plan. Already Jerry is biding his time on the bench while other players drafted behind him have become starters for their teams.

NaVorro Bowman in San Francisco, Major Wright in Chicago, Colt McCoy in Cleveland and the killer, Jimmy Graham in New Orleans, were picked after Jerry in the third round of the 2009 draft. All are starters for their teams. Graham is on his way to the Pro Bowl. Bowman is similarly a beast.

That is not opinion, but fact.

Here's another fact: The Dolphins need Jerry to show up before the start of the offseason. If he does, it would fill a hole for a team that has more holes than premium draft picks. If he doesn't, well, then the Dolphins might have to address the position again, either in the draft or free agency.

The Dolphins addressing the offensive line. We've been there before, haven't we?

-----------------------

Sunday's game between the Dolphins and Raiders at Sun Life Stadium will be shown on local television. The club along with CBS-4 have guaranteed to buy any unpurchased tickets, thus guaranteeing a sellout necessary to televise the game.

Fans living within 75 miles of the stadium that otherwise would be affected by a local blackout, will now have the game available to them on CBS-4.

------------------------

I am told that Brandon Marshall will address his taxi cab incident that is all over the news after it was broken by the South Florida Times Wednesday evening.

Marshall is expected to say the issue has been resolved and is something that should not be blown out of proportion. Too late. Newspapers and websites from South Florida to South Dakota, from South Carolina to Southern California, have run with the story that on its face seems harmless.

Problem is, and Marshall will someday learn, nothing that involves him and being handcuffed in the back seat of a police cruiser will be deemed harmless.

Understand that the plan is for Marshall to address the issue. But Marshall is unpredictable. So we'll see. Check back later.

@finsfan78

I also think this manning thing smells fishy.

They gave this dude 20 million bucks and a week later he's out for the season? Why wouldn't Manning renegotiate his contract then? If Manning didn't know his neck was jacked up BEFORE signing the contract...then he should have gave the money back.

I think they are paying him off. I think he will retire after this season. I think they didn't want to go through the whole "releasing" or "trading" Peyton Manning.

The fans wouldn't stand for that plus Manning would be in the drivers seat because of the remainder of his contract would come up due eventually.

So they AGREED that he be paid off.

I'm saying, if you take a guard in the first two rounds of a draft, he better be the next coming of Steve Hutchinson where john Jerry is more likely to be the next coming of fat Albert. If you have to debate, go with the player of the higher upside. I fail to see where the upside was in john Jerry. Even I'd he was starting, how would he be better than the multitude of guards in the NFL that were signed cheap or acquired using late picks??? Look at the top ten teams in the league and how they compile their interior lines. You will see a whole lot more late picks in there than early picks. By a wide margin. No accident that the beat teams in the league assemble their teams that way. Its called maximizing your resources.

All you guys saying Graham would be a blocker here are making the case for firing Tony Sparano end of Season. I hope you understand that.

Andy, because I like you I'll agree to disagree (and won't force you to accept my opinion on the matter). lol.

JSLA,

Only one of three things can happen:

1. Jerry's ready to be at least a solid starter next season.

2. We need to address free agency for a solid rg next season.

3. Draft a rg no later than 2nd rd to get a solid starter.

One thing for certain is that only 1 of these 3 things will happen next season.

So what you're suggesting is 20/20 hindsight then yg? Of course he's going to the Pro Bowl and of course he's going a talented player but he plays in a offence that caters to his skills.

You're doing the exact same thing you'e excusing Armando of. You're beating the dream for this guy as a stud and a first round pick but you had him as a mid pick only a year and half ago. So which is it?

Wait, are you guys really saying Matt Moore isn't comparable to Drew Brees? That their talent levels aren't similar?

GODFORSAKEN *$%&, ARE WE ALL WATCHING THE SAME SPORT?

Ok, dramatic effect intended. Just wanted to once again point out how you're making the case for Moore being a backup....and nothing else.

Mark T,

CraigM is the only one here thinking Graham's just a product of the Saints offense. DD was only stating his only present weakness.

OK, guys I'm out....

Good talk...

CraigM,

Marshall's the exact same wr he was in Denver. He dropped passes, had very few td catches, yet still had a ton of receptions and went for a thousand yards recieving.

Where do you live, underneath a rock?

Remember that 30 yard scramble Manning did last year? Then he flopped down at like the 1/2 yard line or something.

It always bugged me why he did that.

Here is why: Peyton Manning is not going to get himself paralyzed from the neck down playing football. This dude has neck issues that go back years. Its genetic apparently.

Peyton Manning has played his last down in professional football. Dude will retire once they draft Luck. They gonna start Luck right away. Just like they did with Cam. Just like they did with Peyton.

I wouldn't be surprised if Luck already has an INDY playbook.

yesterday's gone,

So because a guy is rated top 3 or so at any position that guarantees results according to you then? Wow. Talk about asinine.

QBs who were supposed to be great also included Tim Couch, Akili Smith and Cade McNown the year McNabb was drafted and none of them ever went to a playoff game, pro bowl or last 5 years in the league.

QBs who were supposed to be great is a long list of repeat failures more then successes.

Yea, that could be true. I hope not. I really enjoy watching him play.

Had to laugh at some of the don't draft O-line comments. And not for the reason(s) you might think.

When it comes to the non-skilled positions, player evaluation should be realatively easy. And this bunch can't even get that right.

The sooner Ireland/Sparano are gone, the better.

DC,

Likewise (truce)

Wouldnt take Manning simply because he's now definitely damaged goods. The price would be far too high in risk vs reward.

Now that the Colts now see how talent starved thier entire roster is. They will be in total rebuild mode beginning with the taking of Andrew Luck.

At best, Manning is thier Hershel Walker piece, to asesemble the neccessary personel around Luck. Manning is now one well placed hit from career ending injury. The clock's ticking.

The Steelers have been taking offensive linemen early in the draft for decades. Last time I checked, they were a fairly successful franchise.

You guys talking in absolutes don't have a clue. The whole deal is drafting the RIGHT guys...not putting undue emphasis on one position over another.

If you don't believe that, call the Steelers and tell them how much better your thinking is.

AndyJ,

Acording to your counter argument, The Akili Smith's, Couch's, and McKnoun's would have been successful had they landed at Philly(Reid) or Titans(Fisher).

A bust is a bust, is a bust dude. Those guys bounced around the league and no one had success with them.

A bust is a bust, is bust!

That right drafting the right players.

So why is Miami having such a hard time.

They fix the QB issue. Everything else will fall in place.

They may be drafting the right players. Who can tell when the blame gets thrown around all the time.

Reality,

Ireland's primary draft strategy is about finding "ACORNS". Every year after the 1st rd, like many dolfans, I went "WHO"?

Besides Pouncey, what other OL has the Steelers taken in the early rounds of the draft? I remember them taking LB's more so.

Have you forgotten about Nate Garner?

I believe he's next up, not Jerry.

Hey the blog is open 24 hours so we can stay here saying the obvious forever!

yesterday's gone,

No I clearly said it takes both to succeed.

But you clearly said that it wasn't a surprise they succeeded considering they were top 3 talents at the postion and Reid and Fisher succeeded because of them and suggested Sparano would do the same

THE DONKEYS ON THIS BLOG FORGETTING IT'S ABOUT THE QB AND THE HC .........................IT'S THE ACORN OLD THINKING ................SAD.

GUYS...............

DON'T FORGET WE R NOT A GOOD TEAM.............

WE R A CELLAR TEAM .............

phinsfan78,

Ireland hasnt been terrible with the 1st rd drafts. Though I do highly question drafting a DE 1st rd when your team plays a 3-4 defense. The DE position in a 3-4 isnt high impact enough to warrant spending a 1st rd pick on it.

Jake Long is unquestinably a great 1st rd pick, though many wanted Ryan. Vontae is a "good" bottom 1st rd pick up. Pouncey's a great mid 1st rd pick up.

Odrick 1st rd as a 3-4 DE is very questionable. Could have been better if we played a 4-3 defense.

I have nothing of value to add.....

...just wanted to say Hi, and that I enjoyed reading thru these 2 pages....

....laters....

..(hope that wasn't too much the way Kris would write it...lol)

It is not Armando's job to know ahead of time whether a player is going to be good or not. In case you have not heard, that job belongs to the Miami personnel dept.

I say Cowher will go where ever Luck goes.

But Sparano might do the same.

I think he has learned a valuable lesson here in Miami.

Don't try to be a HC for a team that has little desire to have the best QB in the game.

Aloco's right, we're not a great team because of the acorn thinking after drafting 1st rd. This year's draft class after the 1st rd maybe the best. But I warn you, that's not saying anything great based on past Ireland drafts.

A bust is a bust, is bust!

-----------------------------------------------

This is a truism....

...and one look at Beyonce confirms that!! :-)

Wouldnt it be ironic if Sparano landed on his feet. Getting a future hc gig with a great qb and become the next Bellichik?

Take away Brady and the Pats probably struggle to be a 8-8 to 9-7 team.

YG..............THANK YOU ...THE ACORN THINKING DOES BELONG TO TO HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUTS LIKE ARMANDO,WE NEED FRESH THINKING FROM SMART PEOPLE WITH DEEP AND LONG TERM IDEAS TO WRITE NEW POSTS TO RAISE THE FLORIDA FANS IQ'S .

Why isn't Garner starting instead of Jerry? Play the guy.

I know. Where ever he goes I'll root for him.

Ireland has done a great job drafting and bringing in talent. Tony should be fired for not putting the best talent on the field, for playing for fg's late in game, for bad clock management and bad use of timeouts and challenges.
Ireland has been great but Tony must go

Uhm, without Brady, pats won 11 games.

And I never said don't take o linemen early, I said don't take interior linemen early. Learn to read please.....

Wouldnt it be ironic if Sparano landed on his feet. Getting a future hc gig with a great qb and become the next Bellichik?

----------------------------------------------
Yo Y G....surely you jest!!

If you dont have a top 5 nfl qb, you better have a lights out championship calibre defense. We have neither in Miami nor does Sparano.

Woner where Bellichik would be now had he come into a similar situation? Can anyone say Cleveland Browns?

YG please don't take this personally.........but could you avoid using the names of our present coach and Bellichek in the same paragraph....let alone in the same context ?

...thanks cuz....:-)

Mark T,

Yes they were 11-6 without Brady. You gotta remember there were still elements of the post championship roster still with the team then. Brady and a couple olinemen are all that's left now.

Im not taklking about 2008, when there were still remnants of the championship era left, Im talking 2011. They would struggle to be 8-8 to 9-7 with the current roster they have now without Brady.

Mallet isnt Tom Brady just yet. LOL

11-5

The people how condemn me for wanting to use extra picks to get the best QB in the draft.

Are the same people who thinks Pat White was a reasonable pick.

You guys are yes men.

Tell me are your ankles ok from jumping on and off bandwagons?

Makes no sense.

IAM WATCGING "PLANET OF APES" ON HBO. THEY HAVE A GOOD TEAM, WITH A GOOD DR(CORNILUS) AND A GOOD GM( DR.ZEAHUS} NOW WITH LIPPY LION COACHING THE DONKYS ANYTHING POSSIBLE. SOONE ARMANDO, THE CHINA MAN COWER, AND OPRAH WILL BE SIPING COLADAS ALL DAY.

Phinsfan....you'll get no quarrel from me on that...

....a premier QB is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL in the league anymore....

...no question...and get him any way you can ..I say....

There are two ways to win nfl championships:

1. Great qb, above average defense, average run game.

2. Great defense, above average qb, average to above average run game.

Either formula works. Cant have one without the other.

BUSTER.............ONCE WE A GREAT QB ,WE WII SEE ALL THE GREAR PLAYERS WANT TO COME TO PLAY FOR THE DOLPHINS....................

(( BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE ))

PS...MOST BLOGGERS HERE TALKING DRAFT THIS GUY FOR THE OL OR THAT GUY FOR THE DL,,,,IT'S ALL CRAP ....

QB

QB

ONCE WE HAVE A GREAT QB

YG.

I LIKE YOUR FORMULA ,BUT WHY YOU DIDN'T GIVE TO THE GARAGE MANGER OR TO THE ACORN WRITER ???????????????

YG....accepting your theorem.......the first option is the shortest route to the goal...

secure the great QB...then work on the solid D..and the reliable run game'''

and I believe that's what most of us have been BEGGING the Dolphin FO to get thru their friggin thick skulls.....

ALoco, you said it best. Qb changes everything. No reason not to sell out this entire draft or anyone on the roster if it means securing your qb. Nothing else matters.

Matt Moore has played as well, if not consistently better than Henne has this year. Throughout the last 4 games Moore has been the best Dolphin qb since Marino.

The missed Graham fg would have led to the upset of Dallas. Moore did his job although it could have been sligthly better. When was the last time Miami lost a game even though the starting qb posted a 99.5 qb rating?

You'll have to go back to the Marino era to find that.

I luv Matt Moore.

.......I wanna go drinking with the guy for krisssake...

...but he is not the answer we seek...

...not if it's premiere..elite..whatever adjective you wanna put in front of Quarterback...

Oh, and this who want to mock my claim that interior linemen should not be valued so highly in the draft; of the top Ren teams in the league by wins, the average draft position is 4.7. That means anywhere from a late 4th on average. Yes there are 5 1stpicks and 3 2nd round picks among these 30 linemen. However, consider that there are also 9 undrafted players. That's right, more undrafted starters on the interior o line for the best teams in this league than 1st and 2nd picks COMBINED!

yg SOUND VERY SMART BUT HE'S NEVER BEEN TO COLLEGE ..........

Buster,

Ireland has a HUGE EGO problem. He only seeks ACORNS, therefore, he can glorify to the world and himself how great a gm he is.

With Ireland its not about building a great team through traditional routes. It's about his vain, "Im a legend in my own mind" attempts to seek self glorification.

After the 1st rd of every draft dolfans are
