The fallout from the Ireland staying, Sparano going column

So what is the fallout?

That's what the Dolphins are worried about today. Actually, that's what the Dolphins worry about a lot: The Fallout.

Today, the fallout comes in various forms but to discuss that, first we must establish the explosions that happened to create fallout. Sunday's explosions came first in the form of a 26-10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

That game sealed Tony Sparano's fate as head coach. The Dolphins vehemently deny any decision on the coach's future has been made. But it is done. The coach will not return for the 2012 season, as I wrote Sunday evening.

I also wrote Sunday evening that general manager Jeff Ireland would be retained for the 2012 season. My column on both topics appears in today's Miami Herald. (Kindly check out the column and my take on the coach and GM.)

So why do I reference the fallout? Well, because Sparano has been concerned whether or not his players will be affected by the news and or speculation that he will go. I predict this news and or speculation will have zero effect on the Dolphins.

Proof?

When asked about the topic Sunday afternoon, Jason Taylor answered with a question of his own. He was asked about Sparano's departure being on everyone's lips and he answered, "How's that any different than September?"

Um, well, it is no different. The Dolphins continued to play hard for Sparano when it was clear their season was over by the time September passed from the calendar's pages. They continued to play hard for themselves, for pride, for the sake of enjoying whatever wins they could muster and, yes, for their coach.

It will be no different now these final three games.

"We play to win games," linebacker Karlos Dansby said. "We got pride, man. Like that dude said on ESPN, we play to win games."

So that fallout will be minimal and manageable.

Then there is fallout from my report about the club's decision to retain general manager Jeff Ireland as general manager.

Fans have mixed reactions. That is part of the fallout. Some media is scrambling to confirm my report. So that's part of the fallout the club is handling. And then there's the truly important stuff:

Forget whether you agree with this or not, the decision is made. Ireland stays for 2012.

The questions are, what this means to the looming coach search. Can the Dolphins still hope to lure a "star" coach while having to hitch him to a present personnel man? Can the Dolphins truly become a championship caliber team with Ireland at the helm of the personnel department, a pertinent question considering they haven't done so in his tenure.

Will Ireland's return be part of a makeover in personnel, one that also includes the additional hire of a football operations czar akin to what Bill Parcells was? Carl Peterson, anyone?

More fallout?

Does retaining Ireland give he Dolphins an advantage in knowing, scouting, acquiring information on Robert Griffin III, the Heisman Trophy winning QB from Baylor? Ireland, it should be noted, graduated from Baylor and has obvious ties to the school.

[RADIO NOTE: I know this is controversial stuff among fans in that you have opinions on the subjects. discussed. You may voice that opinion on my radio show, Armando and the Amigo, as you watch the show stream live here at the Miami Herald. You may call into the show, toll-free from anywhere in the United States. Good morning guys...I think firing Sparano is the right thing to do. Again yesterday, trying a 55yd FG when our defense was playing great was a stupid decision. Accepting a holding penalty when they were going to punt anyway?? I was like "what???". He might be a good man and all that stuff, but his decision making is terrible. Thanks but no thanks. As far as Ireland is concerned, I think he's getting a pass because it's hard to say how much he's contributed to this team since Parcells had total control for a while. Last year's draft was a pretty good one, he signed Kevin Burnett and traded for Reggie Bush, so that was 2 good moves as well. Signing Matt Moore was another good move because DESPITE what people will say, Moore is still a pretty good QB. NOBODY would of done ANYTHING yesterday against the Eagles. Brady wouldn't of done better, Rodgers either. That was one of the worst o-line performances I have ever seen. EVER. Nate Garner is not even a LT, why was he there I have no idea. Carey should of been there instead, another bonehead decision by our coach. Pouncey was awful. Carey sucks. Colombo is a JOKE. I still think Matt Moore can get it done. Look at that throw he made to Marshall in the end zone. He was running for his life yesterday, he didn't even have time to blink. Our biggest needs on offense is wide receiver and o-line. Bess and Hartline suck, Carey, Colombo and Garner suck. Draft a young QB and let him and Moore fight it to start. Give them weapons and find a coach with an offensive mentality and things will start changing. I have a feeling Mangini is on the way.

Craig, you can go back and read all of Mando's excellent reporting, as well as that on the SS, and you'll see that Parcells didn't bring any more talent to this team than any of the other HC's here (save Cam Cameron since all he got was 1 year). So if you think 1 odd year is a big deal, you're happy to believe that.

But Parcells wasn't brought here for a 1-yr success story. He was brought here to turn around a franchise. And all the reporting from the LOCAL PAPERS is that he didn't do that. Anymore than Saban, Wannstadt, Johnson.

As far as Fisher, I know, he's your guy. I've voiced my disagreement in the past, and continue to voice it. Like the Ryan thing with Mark, I'm of a different opinion here. And I haven't been swayed by your reasoning that he'd be a good fit.

Not saying I'm sure I'm right, just saying I don't get that good feeling with Fisher. Also, don't think he's EVER produced teams that will do what Ross wants, be exciting and put butts in seats. You need a high-flying offense for that, and Fisher isn't known for producing high-flying offensive teams.

Just my opinion.

If you want the Dolphins to return to being an intelligent, fundamentally sound, discliplined team then Jeff Fisher is absolutely the right choice. I believe he would transform the franchise immediately.

Montreal, hated the decision to try the long FG. Stupid in my opinion. You have to know your personnel. And Carpenter misses far more than makes from outside 50 yds. I knew he'd miss it before he even attempted it. Could have pinned them back and made them go the length of the field. Instead (hidden yardage Sparano) we gave them 1/2 field, and they scored no problem.

That TD was on the HC. Definitely.

Craig M.....

Isn't INDY's LT still playing.....just saying.....

Chiefs just canned todd haley, competition for a top coach is going to be tight.Add in the fact that we have a retarded owner, and well, we might have a hard time getting a good one.

shaggy,

The rumour is that Pioli wants to reunite with McDaniels and put him and Cassel back together. We'll see.

kris, I didn't get your point about Indy's LT.

If Indy has any sense they'll fire their fake HC too. So, there's going to be LOTS of coaching openings post-Season. Ross better be on his game.

Fisher? You think the players in Miami havent heard about the discords he caused at Tenneesee with his locker room there.

You dont think players dont talk to other league players?

I dont claim to know what the real answers are, but, I do have a gut feeling what they arent. One thing that truly is indisputable, is the fact that pro football again has hit rock bottom in Miami.

I just dont see as a matter that will be sufficiently resolved anytime soon. It's feeling more and more like the light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train.

DC, they scored 7 points off that missed FG, 7 points off the Bess fumble, and 7 points off Matt Moore's INT (Yes, I admit, it was a bad throw, but all QB's make them once in a while. Look at Brady yesterday vs the Skins in that 4th quarter, he cost me some $$ that pr**k.They didn't cover the spread because of that.) You do the math. That's 21 points. Our defense had another pretty good game. Davis got burned by Jackson but so do many other CB's. I think overall they played pretty good. Was it their best game? No, not at all. But it was good enough for the Dolphins to win the game imo...

YOU SAY HARBAUGH IS FIGURED OUT, LAUGH AT HIS 10-3 RECORD. HE IS NOW RATED #1 IN CONTENTION FOR COACH OF THE YEAR:

1. Jim Harbaugh, San Francisco. A very, very close race that got paper-thin close Sunday when the Niners lost to the Cardinals. But to be 10-3 after meeting your full squad for the first time six weeks before the season, after your coordinators and many position coaches meet the players for the first time six weeks before the season, and after most of these same players floundered to a 6-10 record in a bad division last year ... that's great coaching and great organization.

TELL US MORE HOW SPARANO IS THE HOTTEST COACH ON THE MARKET. TELL US HOW HE IS GOING TO INDY TO WIN A SB.

BETTER YET, STAY AWAY WITH YOUR SILLY CONDESCENDING THOUGHTS TO EVERYONE.

BYE FOOL

Craig M....

My point is this.....you talked about what a difference a LT makes.....

I am merely stating what a difference a QB can make....

I like Ireland. I'm happy Mr. Ross does too.
Ireland would shut you dorks up, when a coach come in here and start winning games. We'll win a super bowl and u F _ _ _ tards would still hate on Ireland. The NFL sucks as a whole, nobody is consistent, everybody is 8-8. Parity sucks!!!

I want Rob Ryan and a 1st round Quarterback for X-mas.

Happy New Year People! Next year is going to VERY,VERY interesting year on many different levels.

- Ron Paul 2012 voter

Wake up Ross, Bill Parcells got all his buddies nice high paying jobs regardless of whether or not they were qualified. It's a fraternity, neither one of them have shown they are capable of putting together a top notch football team. Clean house and find a talented, young, hungry coach. Ireland will continue to plague this team otherwise. I would rather see them keep Sparano and find a new personnel guy.

I fear a hc, even a new gm alone, isnt going to bring much change about in Miami. We're not rotten to the core, from top to bottom. Ross himself is like an aborted enema.

Not only is Miami going to become an even less desirous place for great fa players to come. As soon as the players we do have under contract become fa's, they'll be bolting the very second thier contracts expires.

Oh it's bad dolfans, awfully bad!

kris,

No question. Manning makes all the difference in the world to that team. I just think we saw yesterday how important Long is to this team. He's got some kind of back injury. Why risk making it worse. The team has nothing at stake amy more. Shut him down completely for the rst of the year.

I'm not against that Craig. Winning any more games this year just makes it harder to get our franchise QB in the draft, everyone needs to understand that.

Or, makes it that much MORE we'll have to give up to move up.

So doesn't really make sense any way you look at it. Won't save Sparano, won't get the team to the Playoffs, won't do anything but hurt the opposing team if they still have their Playoff hopes alive. That does nothing to OUR team long-term.

yg,

What are you talking about with respect to Fisher's 'discords' in the lockeroom in Tenn? Are you referring to the Vince Young situation? Do you mean the QB who quit on the team on more than one occasion, embarrassed the team on more than one occasion and threw his uniform into the stands? The supposed 'franchise leader' who showed Fisher up more than once? What should he have done? Please explain what you are talking about?

Aslo, they said the same thing in SF last year. Called the team dysfunctional and everything else. Harbaugh has turned things around in a hurry. Also, no one is talking about it because it's Tebow 24/7 but John Fox has done a nice job turning the Broncos around this year too. Doubled their wins from a year ago. It could happen here too.

For the young dolfans who never got to see what a "Dolphins SB" championship team looks like. My greatest sympathies go out to you. It looks like you never will.

For those dolfans who have, we are a "DyingBreed". Yesterday's Gone"!

I would be o.k. with either Jim Tressel or Jeff Fisher, I think both would be safe choices that would turn the ship around, but doubt they would have the exciting brand of football Ross wants... But I would prefer Jon Gruden as my 1st choice as long as he had a good GM to work with, if you give him total control, could end badly... But he did a lot with some suspect offences in Oakland & Tampa Bay, he took journey man QB's & made them stars.. Gannon & Brad Johnson were average at best before Gruden got his hands on them. He's an offensive guy with a good system, whether he has the heart for coaching would be the only thing I would be weary of.
I would even consider Martz, but would need someone else in charge of player/personnel as well..
Both those guys are offensive genius's, but both are alittle to nutz to put in charge of the whole show...

The reality of the situation (despite what yg is TRYING to say) is that this team has thrown away 4-5 games last year and this. The good teams, like the Jets and Steelers, win those games. That's how close we are. Put the right guy in there, make a couple more changes and this team will show just what we've been missing the last three years.

Obey the commands of Lord Pelican!

HAVE THEY FIRED THE PIZZA GUY YET?, MAYBE ROOS SHOULD TAKE A PAGE FROM KANSAS AND END THIS MESS.THAT WAY THE PIZZA MAN CAN GO TO INDY AND WINN SUPER BOWL ACCORDING TO FLIPER BREED.

CraigM,

Doesnt matter how "YOU" choose to view the "VY" Tenneessee matter. What matters most is how league players who might "potentially" play for Fisher in the future or near future view it.

It's very possible some black players may choose to view entirely different than some white players. It's definitely a thing that could become a potential "problem child" in luring some black superstar fa's coming to Miami.

Play the tape all the way thru. If you miss something, hit "rewind".

Can't remember who it is who's saying that it's the coach's fault that the O-line couldn't protect, etc. but, last I checked, the coaches get the available personnel ready to play. The GM brings in those players. If the players suck and no amount of getting them ready to play is going to overcome their general suckiness then whose fault is that? The GM's. Duh.

Ireland is a fukktard and needs to go. Sparano is a good guy but a perennial .500 coach who makes the same mistakes season in and season out.

Haley fired by chiefs. Uh oh.

Mike Martz would be another unmitigated DISASTER!! Are you guys kidding me? He's nuts!! Might be a good offensive coach (still wouldn't want him) but he is NEVER a head coach. If he showed anything in St Louis it's that he was in over his head. Think Cam Cameron. Disaster! The mess that is now St Louis is partly Martz's doing. No he wasn't responsible for all the decisions there but he had a hand in it after taking over a pretty good team.

My best buddy is a Chiefs fan. Saw it coming a mile away.

Anyone else see Cowher call out jason Garrett yesterday? Interesting.

yg,

Now you're just making crap up!! Are you trying to say the Jeff Fisher/Vince Young this was racially motivated? That's crap!!

You don't know Jeff Fisher and neither do I, so why make crap up? Vince Young was thrust on him by the owner, who wanted him. Fisher never wanted him to be the leader of his team. Was he right? Sure looks like it. Don't make stuff up to try and create debate.

I have a feeling Mangini is on the way...Ross seems to like him a lot. Mangini or Miles. I also think Carl Peterson will do what Parcells was doing. Ireland might get a pass this time but needless to say 2012 will be a VERY IMPORTANT year for him. Another year without playoffs and Ireland is next.

Ireland had better become an absolute genius draft evaluator now. As long as league players know that Ross and Ireland are in charge in Miami. Forget about luring really good fa's.

They'll sign Albert Haynesworth over the offseason. Only fa's like Haynesworth, looking for moderate to big pay for little play will be signing with Miami.

Wake up dolfans, looks like this franchise is flunking out even in "purgatory".

Montreal, and o line is still a need. Everyone getting it done with 4th and 5th round picks starting on the o line but apparently we need 4 #1 picks. WTF??!!?

Mark in Toronto,

I said earlier I could see Jerry Jones dumping Garret, with Jeff Fisher out there, if the Cowboys miss the playoffs. Garret has been out-coached and outsmarted the last two weeks and Jones won't miss that stuff. He won't hesitate to pull the trigger if he thinks Fisher could help his team.

Bring Rob Ryan for HC

Why the hell are some people still on Rob Ryan? Because they see him a lot on TV and think he's "cool."

It can't be the coaching. n Unless you love defenses that fold in crunch time.

The Giants had over 500 yards of offense versus Rob Ryan's defense last night.

FIVE HUNDRED YARDS.

Enough about this putz.

#1,

Miles has a very good thing going at LSU. Gotta remember Miles is now hc there because Saban bolted to come here. Then Miles was promoted new hc.

I dont see Miles making the exact same mistake, coming to the exact same team Saban did. Im sure even if we contact him, his first phone call would be to Nick Saban.

Think about it, I believe we can safely cross Les Miles off of our hc list. If he bolts college football, I really dont think it will be for Miami. He and Saban are still very good friends.

Dang, just spilled some gravy on my Zegna cashmere sweater. Glad I had some Perrier near by to keep the stain from settling in.

How's that for a football blog post?

Someone is pulling the wool over Ross' eyes. The Dolphins have the least talented team in the AFC East and their record proves it. You are what your record says you are.

Ireland is a poor evaluator of talent, but apparently he is a good brown-noser.

Ireland and Norway had better become an absolute genius corn flake draft evaluator now. As long as National Butterscotch league players know that Doris Ross and Rock Ireland are in charge in Miami. Forget about turkey bones and luring really good fa's.

They'll sign Albert Haynesworth over the moon offseason. Only fa's like Chrysanthemum Haynesworth, looking for moderate to big cranberry pay for little play will be signing with Miami or Osaka.

Wake up little dolfans, looks like this franchise is flunking out even in Velvet Underground "purgatory".

Maybe Ireland is gonna hire Wade Phillips to be the next coach?

FIRE TONY NOW. ENOUGH.

Like other posters have said, with Ireland staying, it makes sense Mangini's on the way. Ross has relied heavily on him as a football consultant.

Miami get ready for your next pizza delivery guy. Hopefully this time you get it in 30 minutes or less.

THE ARAGE MACHANIC IS SUCH A BROWN NOSER I DONT KNOW WHERE ROSS ENDS OR WERE IRELAND BEGAINS

Jeff Ireland in 2012=empty stadium.

FLIPER, DID YOU SEE ODEN TRYING TO BEAT YOUR 18 STRIGHT HOURS OF POSTING LAST WEEK? HE HAD 16 HOUR.
(BUFFET OF MARATHONS)

I say Ross needs to hire Wiston Moss from GB to be the next HC. And Moss should bring Darren Perry to be the DC...

Don Shula coached the Dolphins for 30yrs. Now we're working on hc #6 in slightly over 10yrs.

Wakeup dolfans, though you may not see it now, there's a very long line of future hc's lined up just outside our turnstile doors!

Tim Tebow > Lord Pelican

ALoco,

DID YOU SEE MY "POST OF THE DAY" PROPS TO YOU YESTERDAY"?

MATT MOORE MY AZZZ! LOL

(BUFFET OF TOILET FLUSHERS)

Talk about a HORRIBLE personality. If anyone thinks Martz is bad, or Cam Cameron, wait to see how the team responds to a guy younger than them thinking he's god's gift to football coaches. Mangini would probably be one the very last people on Earth I'd suggest for this job. The guy did NOTHING as a HC to deserve ANOTHER shot this soon. He should be a coordinator.

Plus, anyone remember a Mangini offense? Me neither. Look forward to more games where we score under 15 points with Mangini as HC.

Horrible, horrible idea.

Craig, understood on Fisher but do you think Cowher himself went out of his way to dump on Fisher to perk Jerry Jones' ears? Sounds an awful lot like what JJ did to H. Wayne to get our patron saint Schula out.

TODD HALEY MY AZZZ!

(BUFFET OF COSMOSIS)

I missed the comment, Mark. Did he dump on Fisher or Garrett? What did he say?

DC,

Sorry but that's the present state of the Dolphins organizational heirarchy. Mangini "man-genius" is on the way. We have officially flunked "pergatory"!

Like other unhygienic posters have said, with Ireland staying, it makes pecan pie sense Mangini's on the great white way. Francine Ross has relied heavily on him as a parakeet football consultant.

Miami get ready for your next balsamic roasted fig, swiss chard, and proscuitto pizza delivery guy. Hopefully this time you get it in 30 minutes or less or more or inbetween.

Robert Griffin 3 will not be a good quarterback. Black people aren't meant to be quarterbacks just as much as white people aren't meant to play cornerback. Cam Newton is an exception of course

I'll say it again, the team that pays the price to trade up with St Louis or Minnesota gets Matt Barkley. Our competition will come from Washington, Cleveland and Seattle. I expect Seattle will end up with a better record than us, so unless Carroll goes nuts, we shouldn't lose out to them. But I expect Washington to be aggressive in going after Barkley. I like RGIII a lot but to me, the guy we really want is Barkley. I'd pay the price for him. Failing that (ie. the price is exorbinant and Washington goes off the deep end in what they want to give up) we should take RGIII top 5 (don't care where he's ranked). We can't get too casual with this. Pay the price and get one of these two. Only thing that could also factor into this if the Colts decide they want a bounty for Luck and then we should get involved. They may figure that Manning has one more shot at this and they could decide to stock up on picks to help him. This could happen but doubtful.
