Carl Peterson likely role? President of the Dolphins

These are three things I'm hearing:

General manager Jeff Ireland will remain in the GM role throughout the 2012 season, as I first reported two weeks ago, owner Stephen Ross confirmed during a press conference a day later, and everyone in the organization I've asked maintains as truth rather than temporary P.R.

Yes, there is a slight chance Ireland might not be around if, say, Bill Cowher changes his mind, wants to coach and is hired by the Dolphins. But sources insists the chances of that happening are slim to none. Thus Ireland's chances of getting bounced are slim to none.

So there's that.

I've also heard from good sources that on the business side, CEO Mike Dee is safe. The Dolphins had good business years in 2009 and 2010. This year has been a bomb. No, actually it has been a bomb dropped in a sewer. It''s been bad because no win, no sellout ... no sellout, no money ... no money, no good.

The Dolphins have conducted internal diagnostic studies, if you will, to gauge the performance of the organization's business side. Sources tell me these studies encouraged employees to openly rate their supervisors. And some nerves were frayed by this at certain levels. But, apparently, the very top of the organization's business side is expected to remain stable.

So there's that.

And finally, I'm hearing that owner Stephen Ross continues to seriously consider adding Carl Peterson to the Dolphins -- essentially transfering him over from his FanVision business to his greater, more valuable, more important business.

The NFL team.

But if Peterson isn't coming as the GM (thank God) because Ireland is that, and Peterson isn't coming as the CEO because Dee is that, what the heck role would Peterson fill?

Here's a purely speculative possibility based on the purely speculative whispers from within the organization: He'd come as the overseer of all things Dolphins.

He would come as club president over Ireland and Dee. He would be charged with presenting the Dolphins as one united organization under one umbrella rather than a divided organization that on the one hand plays football and on the other hand considers itself a business that happens to play football, as one internal memo last year maintained.

Peterson has done this before. His role with the Kansas City Chiefs was president, general manager and chief executive officer. So obviously he's got experience in all three. He obviously knows what all three jobs entail as his time in Kansas City spanned 20 seasons.

And he could come on board as a liaison between football operations and the business side -- working to unite the two sides of the franchise as owner Stephen Ross has been thinking about and wanting to do for several months.

So there's that.

Boy youre dumb. Why would the Rams trade the #1 overall for Jake Long, when they could use it on Ryan Kalil. Kalil's rated 2nd best player entire draft.

Long just had his worst season as a Dolphin. Plus now he banged up every season.

Yeah, only in your twisted thinking Rams passing on the 2nd rated player in the entire draft(Kalil) who happens to be a LT too.

Maybe you should go apply for your "hit the road jack" scholar application.

Mark in Toronto...I don't give to much creedence to the report about Griffen going to the Olympics.Actually it wasn't a report, but an interview with his agent, or handler. That should tell the story right there..I guess I could be wrong. But this is kind of out of nowhere. You would think that if Griffen was thought of as an Olympic team possibility it would have been talked about before last week. Again, I'm not in the loop as far as Baylor, or Griffen stories. I just caught this on the Chris Russo show..

JSLA saying his gut feeling's Barkley stays isnt a Capt Obvious statement like yours. Geesh, pick a vowel, buy a clue dude. ROTFLMAO!

Ross, Peterson, Dee, Ireland and Mangini????

You obviously missed the earlier conversation I had with yg. He called me an 'idiot' and a 'dumbass' for evern suggesting there was a chance that Barkley returns to school. Claims it's 99.9999% a sure thing h's turning pro. Seems to know way more about the topic than anybdoy else. Not sure where he comes up with this stuff but he's the man!!....

I wasn't trying to suggest you are a dumbass. Thee was sarcasm in my voice. For the record, I think it's 70/30 he comes out but there is definitely some doubt. Kid loves USC and the College life. It may be a big deal for him to be the number one pick and not to get lost in the Luck mania....we should find out today.

Such an ignoramus.....why bother!

What do you think of the chances of RGIII being picked ahead of Barkley or does it depend on the team? I haven't quite got them figured out. I think you have to marvel at everything RGIII brings to the table. Could be pretty increbible in a Shanahan offence. Barkley, maybe a little better suited for what Cleveland or ourselves want to do? Tough call....but where so you see these guys lining up and how far down do you think Jones goes?

Also, if Barkley announces he stays, it only increases the likelihood we aint getting Barkley if not at least sitting 6th position.

The teams that will be ahead have specific need position and impact players will be available to fill those needs. If the Skin sit atop of us forget about RGIII.

If anyone thinks Landry is better option than trading Manning, especially if the Colts are willing to accept a traded down 1st rd pick(allowing us to grab an extra 2nd rd pick), you gotta be out of your minds.

Of all of the qb's Landry seems to have the most potential for bust. Hell, if we cant get RGIII we may as well trade down, pick up an extra 2nd rd pick, and get the best available 1st rd qb with the traded down pick even if we dont get Manning.

Ah, ok Craig.
I generally skip the mudfight conversations. Sorry for doubting your integrity.
Anyway, most folks say he's coming out, but based on nothing but their own gut feelings. Not a single expert or source close or not to him has a clue. That said, if it's THAT hard to decide, then I say he pulls a Leinart.
if he's coming out, wouldn't he have contacted agents, or "experts" on his staus? Wouldn't those things have been sussed by his close buds? Wouldn't SOMEBODY squeak something?
Just seems too quiet for an NFL announcement to me.
But as always, I'll own it if I'm wrong.
Really do hope he comes out.
Hope he's a Dolphin too.

Spiderman, I love Jake Long. Probably my favourite player on the team. It's why I defend him so much when the Long/Ryan debate comes up. He's everything you'd want in a LT.

The reality is though that this team has been 7-9 the last two years and doubtful that they even get there this year. It's not Long's fault by any means but it's the old addage, you have to give something up to get something. Luck could be the next Manning. We don't know. I think this is something the Rams would look hard at and if we could expand it to include a RT, like Smith or Saffold, then all the better.

Craig M | December 22, 2011 at 01:24 PM

Best Nickname hands down is Big Jake's, he's referred to as THE WAR HAMMER, talk about fitting regarding his pain threshold, his intangibles are off the charts as well but if we can trade him for a dominating future presence at the Q.B. position then it's worth the conversation when weighing the Pro's and Con's.

I remind everybody that Chris Hinton is a H.O.F worthy LT but the most interesting thing about him is he was the Franchise LT sent to the Colts in the Elway trade and while Hinton went to boat loads of Pro Bowls he never was part of a winner were Elway went to 5 S.B.'s and won 2, end of conversation of if the scenario is viable for me.

Meant to post if Barkley stays it increases the liklihood we wont get RGIII.

Very well said. Huge Jake Long fan but I'm open to anything to make this team better. Would really hate to see the guy go but all I care about is for this team to win.

Agree with the liklihood agument. Another reason I want Barkley to come out.

Ryan Kalil(LT) is the 2nd rated player of the entire draft. Why would a team like Rams trade for him if they can get Kalil?

They would be getting a younger version of a franchise LT to go with thier franchise qb.

Agree that Kalil is the pick before any Long trade scenarios but if the Rams want more bang for they're proverbial buck then trading Long and say some players along the DL might be more enticing. Remember at the end of the day it's simply an idea everybody is spit balling around. I hear what your saying about all the scenarios really being to early to call and feel the best decision for Barkely would be to enter now with his stock through the roof which changes the thinking as well, at the end of the day his decision will weigh heavily in every teams move at the top of the next draft regarding picks, trades ect...

We trade away Jake Long to get a franchise qb, then at same time increase the chance of getting him killed. That just makes so much sense.

Our oline has enough pass protecting problems, now you increase them? Hope we can get a franchise qb that can throw from the "horizontal position" is all taht I can say to that! LOL

Craig M..Good question. I think Barkley is staying at USC..If he comes out the question about he and Griffen is a tough one. Like you said it depends on the team. Each has a skill set that is attractive to a different audience. It isn't a case of Andrew Luck who is clearly rated higher then any of them. So It is a case of the individual teams evaluation.

If it were me..I'm taking RG III. I'm drinking the kool-aid. I like Barkley. I think he is going to be a good quarterback. I just Think that Griffen may end up being FANTASTIC..

I concur. It's no the typical way I view QBs but after seeing what Newton and Tebow have brought to their teams and how well they have their teams playing, I'm sold. Count me as one of the believers in RGIII.

RGIII has the top college qb efficiency rating. That's higher than both Barkley and Luck.

Plus RGIII gives you a better chance of extending plays and turning broken plays into big plays out of the pocket with his world class speed.

RGIII's top qb rating is simply incredible when considering he's far from a "dink and dunk" passer. He also has a higher yards per completion average than any qb in the nation.

He's a very efficient big play maker. He's proven it over and over and over again.

DD, I too would pick RG3 ahead of Barkley. Don't get me wrong, Barkley is great, but he had a far more talented team to work with than Baylor. RG3 had to carry his team much more so.

Plus, Barkley seems to be a traditional pocket passer. Nothing wrong with that. But RG3 is more diverse while being accurate too. If I were an OC, I would be drooling at all the schemes I can create with him.

Don't like the idea of doing the announcement on campus either. Yikes.

RGIII showed big balls too. Im referring to the interview immediately after smashing Landry Jones and the Sooners. When asked what he thinks, he said, "I think Baylor has just won thier 1st Heisman trophy".

Shows the guys has big balls to say that before it even happened.

YG...I'm in. I don't need any convincing.

Ross, Peterson, Ireland, and Dee?......

Sounds like "Lion, Tigers, and Bears...Oh My!!!

But we weren't in Kansas in the first place...

We still have the guy behind the curtains to contend with... but isn't that a horse of a diffeent color?

Reminder: if we lose to the Pats and the QB-starved Washington beats Minn, then we move up ahead of them in the draft.

Scott, you're pretty dumb if you think that. SunLife Insurance is a Canadian company, and it didn't do too well in the US. They are ceasing operation in the US. Do you think it would make sense to have a Stadium named after them in the US where they have no business unit, of course not. Quite being stupid.

That's an acceptable thing for Ross to do with Peterson. As long as he has no say on players or coaches.

Darryl / Craig M,

The HIT factor with RG111 is to much to over look seems like a focused version of Vick but like Vick I worry how he will hold up physically at the next level. He does seem to have more of a pocket presence than Vick ever had before last Season but in the NFL the up field and outside rush will give him happy feet early in his career. Like most off the charts talents he will run and have success with it incorporating it to his game.

Then the size factor leaves you guessing just a little as well while listed at 6'2" seems closer to just about 6' on the nose. I'm more partial really to M.Barkely and while I could be wrong think he is the real deal. I've watched him some and can't help but notice he's putting up # in a team were his skill options are all Fr. That isn't the Semi-Pro squads that C.Palmer,M.Lienert, John David Booty (stud in that O) or M.Sanchez had to work with. I wonder watching them when the contain breaks down just how much improvising Barkely actually does with those young guys breaking routes, very heady kid with lots of moxie.

..One thing that Cam Newton has done that could help Griffen. And this has NOTHING to do with their styles of play, or skill set.

Newton came out of nowhere last year to become the number one pick. Be honest, who had Newton on the radar as the number one pick, even first round prospect at the beggining of last year? Newton laid the ground work for a player like RG III to come out of obscurity(or mid round prospect) to Player on the rise, and perhaps the second qb taken..

To be honest, I'd be happy with either kid at QB. It actually doesn't matter to me. The Henne project is over and it's time to get onto a new one. If we're unable to trade up, I'm even in the Landry Jones camp and while I don't know enough about Sproles, I hear good things about him too. I'm not looking for a day one starter, just someone we can get in the fold and start developing further. I think we can over-analyze this stuff....I just want someone with the talent to step in until he's shown he can beat Moore out for the job.

Darryl, good point on Newton. I remember last year when the Dolphins tried to bring Newton in for a visit. I think he declined stating he wasn't going to last that long so it was a waste of time.

fin4life...The hit factor is always an issue. That is why I don't like the running quarterback. Griffen isn't a running quarterback. He was last year, he was his freshman year, and that is why his stock was mid round-prospect.

But Griffen has done a nice job of learning how to stay in the pocket and deliver accurate passes..Again something he didn't do with consistancy until this year.

One worry that is very valid, and will come up. Will Griffen be able to be this kind of passer in the NFL? Can he read defenses, and have enough guile to be a pocket passer? Every young quarterback is going to run. It is just easier then making your reads when the play breaks down..Griffen isn't Cam Newton. He isn't going to last long playing a Vick style. He just won't. His speed, and escapablity are what make him attractive until he figures out his craft. but a team would be foolish to think this would last forever.

Call me crazy but the upside with a guy like RG111 could prove for a shocker on draft day when he goes ahead of everyone. The consensus going back to the 2011 draft was A.Luck but he struggled Vs.a team in Oregon St. that Barkely took to school in a clinic he put on just one week later in playing his Bowl game because of NCAA sanctions. Then you see what RG111 did in the Okla. game and I don't think every team sees it so cut and dry anymore, your observation regarding Cam is also something teams will look at without a doubt, good observation.

Michael Vick weighs 215lbs. RGIII 220lbs, still RGIII looks much bigger.

The height concern was also something that was talked about when Drew Brees came out. Probably a big reason why he feel to the first pick in the second round. I would be perfectly happy with the next Drew Brees in fold....thank you very much!

RGIII seems to have more muscle mass on his framw than Vick. Muscle is lighter than fat.

Not saying Vick is fat, just saying 5lbs more muscle mass can look at least 10lbs heavier. Also make an athlete absorb impact better.

You trade Long and you immediately downgrade the abilities of Reggie Bush, Daniel Thomas, and the Future QB

Im muscular built myself, weigh 195lbs. Most people think Im anywhere from 210-220lbs. Muscle has the illusion of making you look heavier.

Fat just makes you look fat.

Yg, muscle is denser than fat. For example two men that weigh 200 pounds, the one with more fat will take up more space and appear bigger.

What's heavier, 50lbs of bricks, or 50lbs of feathers?

Craig M,

I would also be pleased to get the new Q.B. era on the way but am scared to death of Landry Jones and while others simply tell you they don't like him, I'll give you my reasons which I've been posting during the Season.

1) Alot of his passes seem to be of the screen and hitch variety were his skill guys are getting lots of YAC. You don't see a great deal of downfield stuff in that O.

2) Has an eternity to throw behind a HOG OL and while not his fault to have the luxury, I for one want to see him under pressure more. In the one game I saw the pressure applied he was toast and threw very erratically.

3) Call it Dolphins syndrome but I hate Oklahoma's redzone package because they pull L.Jones off the field and go to this behemoth Fr. Q.B. they nicknamed the BELLDOZER to run a pseudo Wildcat taking away Jones ability to show you what he can do regarding those passes or running a goal line O.

Then there is the HYPE MACHINE around this kid which frankly reminds me a great deal of the one that surrounded Joey Harrington. I could be wrong but it looks like a dog and barks like one to me.

Most concerns about RGIII are how he will measure at the combine. If he indeed measures 6'2 as listed, then he's definitely goes top 10ish. If 6'0(2inches shorter) he may get tossed into the Drew Brees colleg qb category.

He doesnt fall out of the 1st rd, but, he definitely goes middle of the pack to bottom 1st rd. Scouts are dying to get thier measuring tapes on him. No one doubts the abilities for a minute.

YG, RG3 arm more than makes up for his height. He throws the best long ball of all the QB's. Will 2 inches in height really matter that much?

My point was, if two muscular men are side by side. The guy with 5lbs more muscle could look 10lbs heavier because of the increased muscle mass.

Fat just looks plain nasty and is an entirely different category. LOL

I weight 210 at 6 ft. Normally, that would be a fat guy but not me Im so sexy with it.

To you and I 2inches doesnt matter with RGIII. It's the nfl people that have issue with a 6'0 qb.

If not Kellen Moore would be no brainer top 5 nfl qb if 3 inches taller. There's no doubting his ability niether. Nfl people are really concerned about getting more than normal batted down balls by nfl d-linemen.

Chad Henne used to get his balls knock down at the line all the time, and what is he 6'4? It depends on the throwing motion of the QB. Kellen Moore have a weak arm and played in a weak conference. If he was 3 inches taller maybe I still dont think he would be top 5 pick.

Absolutely! But its 6'4 qb's like Henne regularly getting balls batted at the los that scares nfl people of much shorter qb's.

Its the nfl people. They did the exact same thing evaluating Drew Brees. Thats the only reason Brees went 2nd rd.

Damn it!! it looks like Barkley is staying in school. The Dolphins have the worst luck ever...

spider, put this way, Kellen Moore would go higher than Tim Tebow if he were 3 inches taller. Tebow had far more issues, but like Moore he was a winner.

I thought they were announcing it at 4:00?

Barkley's announcement isnt until 4:00 PM. I snicker when people here say he must be staying because the announcement will be done at USC. Where did they expect him to make the announcement, at Starbuck's? LOL

He would NOT be a top 5 pick. Don't fall for this crap. He's trying to drag people into a debate. There's not an expert out there who would have Moore as a top 5 pick, and it'll be proved at the Combine, with even another 3-6 inches on his frame. Not saying the kid won't make it, just saying.....don't fall for these ridiculous comments.

Ohio Dolfan, This is what majority of people are reporting. Chis Fowler, Peter King, Matt Leinart. It just would suck if he stays!

NFL Net. calling it right now Matt Barkley is staying in school, live at 4:00 P.M. he will announce but several prominent perspective agents say he's staying.

I could be wrong, but, I expect the fact he's even holding a press conference could suggest he's leaving.

If he were staying, there's really no need to have a press conference. For what? To appologize to the nfl? Isay he wants to publically thank USC for the opportunity it had given him.

You obviously watch the College game a lot more than me and I'll respect what you have to say about Jones. You may in fact be right on everything you say about him. The only thing I would say is that I'm not looking for a day one starter and if he still has the ability to grow and develop at 22, then I'm not ruling him out. Aaron Rodgers had some shortcomings as a QB coming out and I defy anyone who said he would be what he is today coming out. People were split on Smith and Rodgers coming out but obviously there were an awful lot of GMs who just didn't see it in Rodgers coming out. Same with Drew Brees. Same with Brady. In these guys we're talking three of the very best QBs in the league today. I think Jones on the bench for a couple of years would have the chance to still be a good pro.

Geez, if that's the case, so much for that 99.9999 per cent guarantee.

You got any stocks you guarantee for me too, yg?

Capt Obvious again. Moore isnt 3 inches taller, so it cant be a proven fact. Dude youre so obvious. A dead man couldnt be wrong about something that cant be proven right.

Here's one for you CraigM:

Barak Obama is our president. Im sure you would have already told us that if we hadnt missed the election. ROTFLMAO!

Great, I'm not awaiting the chorus of people saying we'll be fine with Matt Moore this year, so just shore up the other positions of need and get a QB next year.

I expect the first post to that effect in 3,2,1...
