Dolphins continue coach hires, must answer questions

The Dolphins continue putting together a coaching staff these days, with the most recent announcement that George Edwards, who left the Miami a couple of years ago to join the Gators then the Bills, is back with Miami after he was fired in Buffalo.

Also returning to the Dolphins 2012 staff will be tight ends coach Dan Campbell, special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi and strength coach Darren Krein, all three of whom were on Tony Sparano's staff last season.

Zac Taylor, a former graduate assistant and tight ends coach at Texas A&M under Mike Sherman, joins the Dolphins as an assistant quarterbacks coach.

More hires will be announced in the coming days as the staff is still incomplete.

But this much we know of the current staff: On offense, the hiring of Sherman shows a move toward experience and thus a possible upgrade with the hiring of Sherman.

On defense?

Not quite as good.

The Dolphins, as we all know, hired longtime Cincinnati assistant Kevin Coyle to become the defensive coordinator. Coyle is no rookie coach. He's been in the profession 35 years and has been in the NFL 11 seasons, the past nine as Cincinnati's secondary coach.

Coyle also served as the defensive coordinator at Syracuse, Maryland and Fresno State during his career.

But he has never been an NFL defensive coordinator. That is fact. So it will be interesting to see how his running of Miami's switching 3-4/4-3 defense does compares to the work well-regarded and experienced Mike Nolan did the past two seasons.

Nolan was granted his release despite being under contract and left to go to Atlanta -- not because he was advancing, but rather because he was unhappy he was not considered for the Miami head coach position while one defensive assistant -- Todd Bowles -- was a finalist and obviously got an interview. Bowles, by the way, also left to become a secondary coach in Philadelphia.

So the replacing of Nolan with Coyle glows in neon as the big question mark the Dolphins must answer. Nolan had served as the coordinator in Baltimore, Denver as well as head coach at San Francisco when he landed the Dolphins coordinator job in 2010. The Dolphins were sixth in scoring defense, allowing 19.6 points per game a season ago.

The Bengals, by the way, yielded 20.2 points per game and finished ninth in scoring defense.

Coyle faces something of a rebuilding job and does so as a first time NFL coordinator under a first-time NFL head coach.

We'll see.

I was checking out those Nike uniforms and must admit they look interesting like when the NBA went to multiple uniforms with 4 to 5 team color schemes. Seems the Nike owner will owe the Univ. of Oregon big time if he lands that mega money deal from the League for letting him design their gear for some years now, I believe he put together over 1,000 designs for the Ducks.

you are by far the worst writer in the history of sports writing. your opinions suck and your analogy and view of coach's is pathetic. Nolan may have been a decent, I stress, decent defensive coordinator, but he was a horrible head coach. I'm a Fin fan, but I live 2 hours from SF and he set that franchise back 5 years when he was there head coach. We finally have a hungry head coach who's ready to bring winning football back to Miami and you ridicule his moves like you know anything about football. your sources are idiots who feed you garbage to make fun of you because you'll print anything they say. Go work for tiger beat or some other teenager magazine that loves pointless drama. I'm sure your followers will be happy to meet you there

Unfortunately, Bill is correct. They are a fake. It would be interesting to see something new after all these years; league wide, that is.
The Seahawks are the only team I know of who are definitely making a change to their uniforms for 2012. Mike Dee said they plan no changes but the league is supposed to be unvieling the "new" look sometime after the SuperBowl.

Actually, I believe Nike is bringing the new look to the draft. The color schemes aren't going to change for most teams but I believe the overall look of the uniform is going to be somewhat different. Nike has pushed to make it look more like the Combat design. I don't think it's going to be a full blown change just yet but it may happen over time.

Nolan should have at least been considered for HC. He had HC exp and it was his play calling that put the worst beat down that the Sanchise ever had.

I know some are going to be uncomfortable with this but, when you think about what some fans wanted as a quarterback this past season, I'm glad the fans don't make the decisions.
Carson Palmer, Kevin Kolb, Kyle Orton, Vince Young and now Matt Flynn. When is it going to end?
It seems that the fans of this team are so desperate for a quarterback that can lead it to the promised land that they are willing to lower their standards.
Personally, I would rather see the team get Foles or Cousins in the draft and develop them into starters; even if it takes a couple of years.

Prof. Lou,

They look pretty cool, the changes started at Oregon and have taken hold all over the NCAA. If Nike lands the NFL deal there owner who apparently is an Oregon graduate can thank their Administration for letting the Ducks play guinea pig to his little experiment that a few years ago was in all honesty ugly but seems to have come along in time, for example their look for the 2011 Natl. Champ game were not very nice with those ugly short yellow socks but this years version for the Rose Bowl looked better.

fin4life,
Nike has the deal for 2012. The SuperBowl is the last game that will be played in a Reebok uniform.
Nike has stated that changes are coming this year but my understanding is the NFL squelched the changes significantly.
We'll see on draft day.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the new Lingerie Football League uniforms.

Last years were Decent, but I think they could've been A LOT better!

Go Bliss!!!!

Yup.

Professor Lou | January 31, 2012 at 07:09 PM

Prof.L,

No offense taken, I personally hated the idea of Palmer because I never believed he truly got over the 05 playoff injury or played like he did before it again. Kolb I felt was AJ Feeley revisited, Orton produced in a system but could never beat out Grossman in Chicago and Flynn to me has a bit of a Feeley after taste as well but am guilty as charged regarding VY and wanted to see him in Miami.

I understood he was a headcase but felt just maybe given the talent with a change of scenery?? I guess I was wrong but do get the lowering the standard thing and believe it's the old adage about desperate measures breeding desperate thinking or something to that affect I mean when your Franchise Q.B. retires in 1999 and you haven't really made an effort to replace him by 2011 then a certain sense of despair, desperation and a mix of frustration all set in.

yes lou as opposed to ireland making the dec, henne

I replied: Who cares? It's a safe investment-LOL.

Somebody's hating!

I gotta tell ya, Greg cote is a huge douchebag. A whole bag of it. That article slamming the only playmaker we have is ridiculous. All it was was b marsh giving credit to anyone but himself, being modest, but it proves that good ol Greg will do anything to give Marshall crap while backing his go to guy, Matt Moore. Me? Matt Moore's best games are far behind him....if this is henne part two and he is our starter in 2012 then I'm gone, and cote hopefully will retire, or go away, or something.

I guess I just pissed off some of the "mob" over at the SS. I was called a troll. Is that a term of endearment?

What if... Luck says NO to the Colts like Elway did many years ago to Colts?

Didn't Eli Manning also say NO?

Luck might not want to go to a team that seems to be in disarray.

Who's to say RGIII might want to get picky as well.

I've got my fingers crossed that one of these two QBs will ask for a trade.

Who else thinks this might happen? Fins maybe?

Lou -- I thought it meant you had really ugly hair and lived under a bridge.

What we gonna do now with no Football? I guess jerk-off or SOD(those who can).

So, I have been playing with a mock draft. Here you go folks.

Miami Draft -- In this draft I am going to assume we upgrade OG and QB via FA. They get Flynn and Nicks. This is also assuming Murtha or Jerry can get school'd up and start at RT.

Trade -- Cincy trades their 1st, 1st at 17 in the 1st round to Miami for Miami's 1st. Miami gets Cincy's 2nd this year and a 4th in 2013.

At pick 8/9 Cincy takes RB Trent Richardson – Alabama

With the 17th pick in the 2012 NFL draft Miami Dolphins select Melvin Ingram DE – South Carolina.

With the 42nd pick in the 2012 NFL draft the Miami Dolphins select Coby Fleener TE – Stanford.

With the 53rd pick in the 2012 NFL draft the Miami Dolphins select Markelle Martin FS – Oklahoma State.

With the 73rd pick in the 2012 NFL draft Miami Dolphins Michael Egnew TE – Missouri.

With the 103rd pick in the 2012 NFL draft Miami Dolphins select A.J. Jenkins WR - Illinois.

The Dolphins have never done right with regards to minority hiring. They are a leading franchise for which the Rooney rule was invented. The Todd Bowles interview was just to meet the quota. A token candidate and smoke screen for owner Ross and until the Dolphins do right with regards to minority hiring the franchise will languish in mediocrity.

I have tried many times to reach the head of my dik but haven't been successful yet.

Why I write here People write no more, here.

Oscar must be a fan of George Carlin.

Lou -- I thought it meant you had really ugly hair and lived under a bridge.

But it is a very nice refrigerator box.

George, you, me, everybody =.

Armando no here. He SB?

We suck, and will continue to suck until Ross and Ireland are gone. We can hire whoever to do whatever and as long as those two guys are captains of the ship, it will go in circles.

--------------------------------------

I feel ^^^"THIS POST"^^^ should be held up and considered a monument to the Miami Dolphins Blog provided by Armando and the Miami Herald.... Posts like the one copied and pasted above are the reason why our fan base can be split directly down the middle as either.....

Solid thinking fans Fools & Morons

The statement..."We can hire whoever to do whatever"

Is now and forever more plastered into infamy as one of the Top 5 most ridiculous and mindless statements I have ever read... and after spending a few years as a steady contributor to this Blog until 2 years ago I finally realized my father was right, that one should "Never argue with idiots or the insane" because it will not be long until it is imposable to determine who is who.

EVERYONE... is due their own beliefs and the right to say what they wish. But I have become unable to distinguish between those who just want something to Bi*ch about, and those who have been "Media Bashed" by Armando & Co. into finding the absolute worst in everything... leading the entire blog (save a few) into being clinical cynic's.

What I hold Armando's feet to fire about IN THIS particular piece about is his comments about Coyle not being an experienced NFL Coordinator... even though by Armando's admission "Coyle is no rookie coach. He's been in the profession 35 years and has been in the NFL 11 seasons, the past nine as Cincinnati's secondary coach.Coyle also served as the defensive coordinator at Syracuse, Maryland and Fresno State during his career." which to me seems to be a good place to going the ranks of Coordinator...

But it is the "Mike Nolan" issue that not only Armando, but many other media guys enjoy toying with fans with the most... They speak of the great respect Nolan has throughout the NFL and how Nolan has done this or that...

What Armando and others seem to fail every time to point out... (Perhaps because it kills their stories punch?) is that the Miami Dolphins Defense gave up more 4th Quarter collapses then any team in the NFL for 2 years straight... Why is THAT not being reported about the great "Mike Nolan?"... Why is the fact that Nolan was our D-Co while we started the 2011 season 0-7 not mentioned on Nolan's resume'...? Why is the FACT that Miami was only 11 points in a total of 5 games from being 11-5 instead of 6-10...? Why did Mike Nolan's Defenses give up 4th Quarter collapses while Miami was leading games to Cleveland, The Giants, Denver (A TRUE collapse), Dallas (A Thanksgiving day game we led all day until 2 seconds left when Nolan's Defense allowed Dallas to kick the game winning FG?)... What about Giving up a 17-0 lead at the half to New England...?

WHAT IS THIS GREAT LOVE FOR MIKE NOLAN...???

Before making STUPID remarks or following dumb idea like the one written in Armando's piece.... Know and understand the facts... Nolan's defense lost games... IT took a 11-5 team to 6-10 all by itself.

The city of Indianapolis suks dik.

Armando a high living geek, and no work much.

"Never argue with idiots or the insane" because it will not be long until it is imposable to determine who is who.

Swamy | January 31, 2012 at 08:50 PM

When Elway did it back in 83 he had 2 VERY BIG Barrels over the Colts heads. The 1st being that he was also the 1st Rd. pick of the N.Y. Yankees and threatened that without a trade was on his way to Spring Practice.

The other is that back then before the 93 CBA instituting FA you held out the entire year and went through the draft process again the following Season, in effect you could force your trade by forfeiting a season. You can no longer do this, today the team that drafts you owns your rights for 5 Seasons.

Back in those days the only way a team could hold your rights for more than ONE season without signing you was if you were part of a draft the NFL held to select USFL players in 84 a rule later instituted in the regular draft and enforced every year regarding USFL players which forced J.Kelly, H.Walker, Anthony Carter, Reggie White ect... To play for the team which selected them and lead to a USFL Anti-Trust Law Suit but that's a different story.

The 1st player to use this loop hole against his NFL team and actually hold out would be Bo Jackson who went to play Baseball in 86 for the K.C. Royals when Tampa Bay unable to sign him forfeited his rights and he went into the 87 draft were the Raiders got the biggest 7th rd. steal in History. UM's Melvin Bratton who was hurt in his final College game did the same to Denver.

The Eli deal was the Chargers knowing N.Y. wanted him forced a trade to their convenience but believe me I doubt IF they truly wanted Manning that he would have been sent anywhere nor that he would have held out for 5 years either. Also before last years CBA there was NO rookie cap and teams had to fork over a mint for the 1st pick of the draft affecting there FA movements needing the cap space, that is no longer a consideration either, things to consider regarding FORCED trades!

(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Derek4,

Been a looong Time! Nice post but while I hope Coyle is more the D assistant the Giants got from Philly in Spagnuolo some years back, it doesn't mean Nolan was a BAD D Coach. You know that alot of what goes on in his particular scheme requires real good play from the DB's and he got very suspect play from this group which IMO is responsible for the collapses you mention.

You add the head scratching dilemma with the teams conditioning and you wonder what the HELL Sparano was doing or not given conditioning was suppose to be an edge under his time and we didn't seem to have any real conditioning or stamina until well into the 2nd part of the Season some argue the lock out and I say yes then pause and wonder why every team seemed up to the task by the 1st month and Miami still seemed practically in slow motion.

The entire Coaching staff and Conditioning Coaches and trainers took the year off! The collapse was complete and all deserved the boot they got. It blows my mind that some of these were pounced on like SUPERSTARS and only hope Sparano gives the Jets every ounce of what he gave the Fins (SEEPING SARCASM)

ALoco bad mood tonight. Me go. Tomorrow.

fin4life,
someone was asleep at the wheel.

(BUFFET OF QUESTIONS)

IS PHILBIN IRISH ? OR FROM MEXICO ?

somoene said " brady will eat a 3-4 defense" hmmm well he looked real good against the ravens and steelers this year......... doesn't matter we need more than 1 pass rusher either way. Wake can't do it all by himself. You need differnt kinds of rushers one or two all or nothing type of guys and a couple guys who consistently gets to a QB in 5-8 seconds........ and so on. last year we had 1 all or nothing guy ( cam Wake) the problem was when he got no pressure the qb had like 10 seconds to throw the ball.

What a bunch of total jack off bloggers. Listen to yourselves. Really. Do any of you think any GM would see this as anything but drivel?

TrojanEnz,
the name says it all.

The Fins have a strong foundation of young players who are continuing to rise. Philbin backed in to a great situation , Fisher is scruwed by his agent steering him to the team his bro works for. Ireland is hated but has put young talent in place that will improve more than what we saw in the 2nd half of the 2011 season. The west coast offense will be different than anything in the East and can compete with Belicheat's genius.
