So where is Brian Billick in this coach search?
He's won a Super Bowl. He has experience. He put together a star-studded coaching staff in Baltimore that became a proving ground for future NFL head coaches Mike Nolan, Rex Ryan, Marvin Lewis, Jack Del Rio, and Mike Smith.
If nothing else, the guy can certainly put a staff together.
So what is the Dolphins interest in him?
So far, the Dolphins have had one unofficial contact with Billick or his camp, an NFL source tells The Miami Herald's David J. Neal. And another source tells me Billick is not really in play at the current time at all for the Miami job.
I find this puzzling.
I have asked numerous NFL sources why the Dolphins haven't or wouldn't dive headlong into a chance to interview Billick for the head coach job. No one can give me a definitive answer other than, Brian Billick can be a little pompous. Someone else told me Billick thinks he's always the smartest guy in the room and has no patience of dumb people.
A little pompous? The guy maybe has a big ego?
Are you kidding me?
That's the reason the Dolphins haven't gotten serious with Billick?
There has to be something else because Billick also hasn't been mentioned as a possibility anywhere else -- not St. Louis, not Kansas City, not Tampa Bay, not St. Louis, and obviously not Miami.
If there is an overriding reason Billick cannot be considered a good candidate, fine, I'd accept that. But the Dolphins have officially paid him no mind and at this writing don't seem intent on it.
There has to be a better reason for that than the guy can be pompous.

Miami bad, nobody else has looked but rip the Dolphins only for it.

NH thanks for the yahoo article and I'm going to post some interesting things here for the haters who will refuse to read anything good about their team. I was intrigued by the fact that they list multiple examples of Fishers thinking as the Herald did not. Someone at Yahoo must have a connection with Jeffs handlers.
Posted by: Phins78 | January 04, 2012 at 03:47 PM
please get fisher ross!!!!
Posted by: dusty bottoms | January 04, 2012 at 03:48 PM
"Conversely, Fisher couldn’t help but juxtapose Ross’ five-star treatment with the no-frills approach of his former employer, Titans owner Bud Adams. Fisher, remember, coached the franchise from its move to Houston (as the Oilers) to Nashville, with an interim stop in Memphis. The team played home games in four different stadiums from 1996-99 and at one point operated out of sparse, temporary trailers." Yahoo Sports So you just have to love the haters who have absolutely no knowledge of the situation bashing Fisher because of their record. Trailers?! 4 home games in a different stadium?! Meddling owner?! Forced personnel and player acquisitions?! I'm f***ing shocked he did as well as he did with that mess!

Second!
Posted by: Yeah! | January 04, 2012 at 03:49 PM
Stephen Ross (US Presswire) In addition to coming away with a favorable impression of Ross, Fisher believes he could easily work with Peterson – who may accept a formal role of team president in the near future – and Ireland, the team’s holdover GM. He goes way back with both men. Ireland, in fact, was an 11-year-old ball boy at Chicago Bears training camp in 1981, when Fisher was a rookie defensive back. Fisher, who spent much of 2011 season watching NFL game tapes, was highly impressed by the talent on the Dolphins’ roster among other things. And while the Dolphins still have an unsettled quarterback situation, this is not a deal-breaker for Fisher. Contrary to some reports, he is not 100-percent sold on the Rams’ Sam Bradford as a franchise quarterback, either. Besides, given the Dolphins’ desire to enter into a long-term arrangement with Fisher, and his track record of stability as the Titans’ coach, such considerations are not preeminent. Instead, Fisher wants to feel as though he is part of an atmosphere where success is expected and encouraged, and he craves an owner whose commitment is unwavering.

Phins78, Jason Cole. He's the one who was doing this blog before he left the Herald for Yahoo Sports...

Phins78,
That's pretty much how I see things too. So why is it that SO much of the fanbase is SO down on this franchise and can't see some of the good things it has to offer. 40 year of mediocrity? Is that what it is?
Posted by: Craig M | January 04, 2012 at 03:56 PM
Phins78, you better watch out, Ross and Ireland are the devil and this writer and his minion followers will never see different.

Phins78, Who's the lower-case 'phins78'? Little brother or something? Posted by: Craig M | January 04, 2012 at 03:50 PM
LOL, I don't know Craig, he showed up a month ago and used my name but put in phinsFAN78 and when I asked him to change it he changed it to my name but in lower case. I'm honored and will be selling jerseys at the draft this year. Apparently I have fans ;)

I don't get lack of interest in Billick either. People say Billick's SB team was all defense and crap offense. Might be partially true, but the fact is he's a winner. 80-64 record as a head coach, 5-3 in playoffs, 1 Super Bowl win, 2 AFC North championships in 9 years at Baltimore. Before Billick arrived, Baltimore never had a winning season. Billick was fired in 2007 after posting a 5-11 record and losing to the then-winless Dolphins, but just the year before his team won the AFC North division. When he was an assistant coach in Minn, they went to the playoffs 6 out of 7 years.
If you listen to him break down film on NFL and Fox Sports, he knows his stuff. And he's spent the last four years dissecting EVERY team's game film, so he knows what they all can do.
I'm sorry, this man has a right to be arrogant. Dolphins are fools for not pursuing him.
Posted by: LoRyder | January 04, 2012 at 03:57 PM
So we want a superstar SB-winning coach as long as he's not pompous- like Rex Ryan?
Posted by: ralph ortega | January 04, 2012 at 03:57 PM
Armando on a roll today. How do you have more blog posts after the season ends?
Posted by: Clue | January 04, 2012 at 03:58 PM
I agree 100% Armando and have been thinking along those lines for the past few days. Something is up because NO team is interested. He seems to be everyone's last choice. Maybe he slept with someones wife and was black listed like Ted Nolan of the old Buffalo Sabres!

Search it. I've had this name for 4 years.
Posted by: phinsfan78 | January 04, 2012 at 04:01 PM
Billick is a better fit than Fisher IMO. He is an offensive guy who has worked with Nolan in the past, and he has won a Super Bowl. And for those who like to point out that the Ravens D won the SB, Billick was the OC for the Vikings potent, record setting offense of the late 90's
From what I've read, it's not so much that he thinks he is the smartest guy in the room. HE IS the smartest guy in the room.

I also have the same name on espn, nfl.com, yahoo, me emails, etc...

Brian billick vs Jeff Ireland in an arrogance contest. Would love to see those exchanges.
Posted by: Mark in Toronto | January 04, 2012 at 04:02 PM
Armando, you know why! Don't play dumb. Billick won't mesh with Ireland.
Billick is smart & pompus. Ireland is just pompus.
There's only room for 1 pompus a*s roaming the Dolphins facilites!
Posted by: SEARCH THIS!!! | January 04, 2012 at 04:02 PM
Montreal was Cole the one who wrote the article?
I remember Jason because that's when I first found the Herald blog back when I was still on dial up with the rest of the world! Long time ago but Jason was a great writer. And I enjoyed his weekly Q&A. He always took the time to answer all of our questions and even e-mailed me a bunch of times.
But Armando is okay I guess.
Posted by: Phins78 | January 04, 2012 at 04:03 PM
LoRyder, not only that, but they won the Super Bowl with TRENT DILFER as their QB!

Billick is a pompous ass and Ireland is not? At least Billick has some resemblance of a brain!
Posted by: IrelandSucks | January 04, 2012 at 04:05 PM
Phins78,
Put me down for a couple of those shirts.....nice to have fans on here!!...LOL.
As far as Billick is concerned, I think it's still awfully early in the process. I like how the Dolphins have handled things so far. They've made it clear to Fisher that he's the target. They've interviewed Bowles and Toub. I'm sure they will get word back from Fisher in the next week or so and at that point if he's not coming it's time to carry out the rest of the plan. Probably the guy from GB, maybe the OC in NE, maybe a guy like Gregg Williams.
Billick was really be an arrogant a** that rubs a lot of people the wrong way though. I'm not personally a fan of the guy but if he wins I couldn't really care less.
Posted by: Craig M | January 04, 2012 at 04:05 PM
Giving up the necessary picks to get a kick@ss QB is not selling the farm.
Its a good investment.
Ireland with his greatness. Still will have plenty of draft picks left.He can make up for it.
And having a kick@ss QB will attract elite FA.
Therefore making up for it.

Loryder....I agree with you, Jeff Fisher has won nothing. ....he is average at best, If we can't get the BILL COWHERE, why aren't we chasing Brian BILLICK, what a team we love, same team that needed a stud safety, and drafted a DE when we had 5-6 allready

Posted by: oscar canosa | January 04, 2012 at 04:10 PM
The fact that 5 other teams are seeking a HC and NONE of them have Billick in line for an interview speaks volumes about his reputation.
If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...it must be a duck.
So...stay clear of Billick

"Billick thinks he's always the smartest guy in the room and has no patience of dumb people."
He needs to listen to one of his broadcasts some time for a slice of humble pie. When it comes to player names the guy's butchered more than John Wayne Gacy.
Posted by: Chris in the 623 | January 04, 2012 at 04:11 PM
OK, that makes absolutely NO SENSE whatsoever. Billick is the kind of coach that the Dolphins need. But it appears that they may want someone who they can keep under control vice someone who will challenge them to be better in every aspect of the game. I have been an advocate of giving Billick an interview and see where it leads from the minute that Sparano was terminated. Billick himself has even stated that the Miami job "intrigues him". If that is not a subtle hint that he wants to speak with Ross, Ireland, and even Peterson for the job, then the rest of us must be foolish.
I know that Fisher is the one they want for the job. That is very much apparent. But if Fisher decides to go to St.Louis instead of us (which could happen), then the big 3 (Ross, Ireland, and Peterson, not D-Wade, Lebron, or C-Bosh) need to suck up their pride and contact the man. They keep saying that they want a coach that is a big name, has won before, and knows how to build a Super Bowl caliber team. Well they need to prove it. Bringing Billick in for a interview is a first step.
Any thoughts on this from the rest of my fellow Dolphins fans?
Posted by: Aaron | January 04, 2012 at 04:14 PM
I also remember when that idiot writer was more involved with the Dolphins,,,,oh yeah LeBetard! I hated that guy! He said Ricky was lying and all he cared about was money, that he wasn't worth the price and would be even worse in Miami. I emailed him a letter saying his article was off base and to watch, Ricky was going to do even better in Miami because he would be back on natural grass and Wanny would build a good rushing attack.
Couldn't believe he e-mailed me back and we went back and forth for a good week. Then a little while later Ricky broke the Dolphins single season rushing record, led the league in almost every rushing category, made the pro bowl, and was voted pro bowl mvp where he broke another record. ALL WHILE SMOKING WEED! (But we didn't know that at the time).
I emailed him after that season and never heard back, I wonder why ;)
But was also half expecting a letter when he later quit on the team. Maybe we were both a little right.

Naked Pictures...that's the only thing I can think of as to why Billick is outcast by the NFL coaching circles.
Can someone do some REAL reporting around here and get some answers?
Armando?
Make some calls, or better yet, get in front of some NFL administrators and get some answers...
Posted by: NHFINSFAN | January 04, 2012 at 04:19 PM
Compared to the Dolphins organization, Billick would easily be the smartest guy in the room.
Posted by: redsky | January 04, 2012 at 04:21 PM
Yeah Craig it has to be the mediocrity.
Also the fact that way too many people live vicariously through other people's accomplishments. When those people fail some fans feel as if they have failed themselves. They site things like "I'm so sick of being made fun of by other fans". It's pretty funny because they don't even contribute to the teams success or failure but take both very personally.
If you are happy in life this stuff becomes more of a distraction then the be all end all. I just think there are a lot of very unhappy people that don't realize they are. These people feel better about their lives when there is someone to hate and blame. Psychology 101!

BRIAN BILLICK'S FIRST PRACTICE
Brian Billick: Hey would you run the freaking route Dillon!
Ross (to Ireland): Who's Dillon?
Ireland: I think he means Davone.
Billick: You guy's need to get it together, break the damn huddle Mark!
Ross (to Ireland): Did we sign Mark Sanchez?
Ireland: He means Matt.
BRIAN BILLICK'S OPENING PRESS CONFERENCE
Billick: I really like the parts on offense with Mar..Matt Moore, Byron Marshall and Jack Long. On defense we have continuity with a guy I have history in with Nolan and look forward to him working with Jared Rickard and Calvin Dansby.
Listen to him do a game he gets every other name wrong! I think he is a pompous jerk and don't want him
Posted by: TEO | January 04, 2012 at 04:27 PM
Well good point redsky lol.
He definitely has put out signals that he is feeling ignored. But if he was an offensive "genius" who consistently underachieved when building his own offense... is the hope that he will somehow again build an impenetrable D or an unstoppable O?
