Dolphins onto second round interviews

The Dolphins are making progress in their effort to hire a head coach -- at least they seem closer to getting there.

The club yesterday made the pivot away from some candidates and is "on to the second round" of interviews, I've been told by the club.

I am looking for confirmation this means no new candidates will be added to the current pool although I believe that to be the case. I have been told several candidates have been cut from the process -- one of them being Chicago Bears special teams coach Dave Toub, who was the first candidate to interview for the job.

Toub was told Monday he was no longer being considered for the job. He re-signed with the Bears today.

An NFL source tells me Cincinnati defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer has also been cut from consideration.

So what does this mean?

It means the next Dolphins coach will be selected among the following group: Todd Bowles, Joe Philbin, and Mike McCoy.

Philbin, the Green Bay offensive coordinator, will interview again on Wednesday. McCoy, the Broncos offensive coordinator, will interview again Thursday. I am trying to confirm when Bowles will get his second interview, assuming it is not happening today.

[UPDATE: I should have mentioned this earlier, but Philbin is clearly eager to have the job. There were questions about his emtional state following the drowning death of his 21-year-old son last week. There were questions whether Philbin would be willing to relocate his family. He is willing to relocate his family, a source close to Philbin told me.]

All the interviews will be in New York, where owner Stephen Ross is spending the next couple of days.

First!

It will be the ex-Cowboy Zimmer and that will make me puke and not renew my season tickets.

Sick of ex-Cowboy players and coaches.

well zimmer is the only one that most any team would ever even consider, how pathetic is this

omg, not even going to interview saints OC?

guess my season tickets are done

Now that Nolan is gone Zimmer is the guy. A 4-3 defense takes the pressure off of paying or losing Solaia.

I'd say stick with Bowles. I think he has the most upside

This whole thing is such a joke. The entire Dolphins organization is a MOCKERY! I hope you're reading this Ross so you can hear me call you a FREAKING MORON!!!! You're losing complete control or this team and what's left of your fanbase is dwindling. You're a clueless idiot.

Hire Philbin dummies in with Finley TE A Miami need and FLYNN QB A Miami need

Zimmer isn't cut or on the list??

odin, pretty funny, your post at 4:50 & mine of 5:02. pretty identical!

It's pretty funny........in a sad and pathetic kind of way.
It's easy to say Nolan's replaceable. Ok, SHOW ME. Ah, and don't forget, these guys haven't even figured out how to replace SpOrano yet.
I can't wait to get started completely retooling our defensive personal and scheme. It's starting to feel like ANOTHER COMPLETE REBUILDING project in Miami. That means that whoever the next Yahoo's are, they'll get the next 3 to 5 years before their held accountable for ANYTHING!
Search This, I think we made a valid point!
I don't mind people trying to put a positive spin on this, but I'm not buying it. I guess as a fan, they feel they don't have much of a choice. That's fine, but don't try to sell me on there being a big long list of upgrades just raring and ready to go to work for the Ball Boy!
I would feel a little better(I HOPE and PRAY)if they'd find one Coach before we lose ANOTHER!
Let's GO ACORNS!!!!

Whoever the new coach is needs to be given time.

It doesn't matter who it is or what they've done. Nothing we say matters. The only thing that matters is if we start winning games this September.*

Time to get behind the team and support whichever lucky coach gets to lead the Dolphins. Be proud.

*oh, and how they plan on acquiring a franchise QB...

Just go with Bowles at this point. He's a good guy the players respect.

We can't get a 'name' guy and already blew it with the one that was available.

The other current openings are better jobs for these assistants, anyway. I'm sure they and their agents are well aware of that.

Maybe not the Raiders job since money and ownership remain very shaky---but the Tampa and Indy jobs beat Miami.

Yes, it has come to this.

Just give it to Bowles and hope for the best.

Mike Gundy

Yep. This proves me right on this. They are going to settle for Bowles. Stupid move. No change. Just dumb. Philbin or McCoy. I dont care for McCoy. I do not see what was wrong with Zimmer.

Suck for luck!

zimmer easily best of the worst here. hire him.....i guess does it even matter anymore

Jerry Jones cut his finger nail off...

Ireland quickly signed it to a 2 year deal...

And just to add---while I'd just as soon they go ahead and make it official with Bowles, can't you just hear the predictable spin:

"When we completed our search, we were delighted to realize the best candidate was the one we already knew best...bla bla bla"

Dolfan for life, but I really need a break from these guys. Wish them well, but I'm planning to find other hobbies on Fall Sundays to be totally honest.

The Fisher thing was the last straw for me, although I know a lot of you disagree on that one.

What about Carmichael?

I guess Ross will be buying boatloads more of his own tickets.

lowest point ever for franchise

No Zimmer? Wtf? Whatever, we're going to end up with a guy that didnt call any of his own plays in Philbin or freaking McCoy. Grrreeeaaatttt. Cant wait for more on the job training. This franchise just keeps getting worse. I actually thought after F isher was lost we were the lowest we could get, I was wrong.

And I'm starting to buy into the idea that Ross is being taken by Ireland because he doesnt know any better. Ireland will make sure no one smarter than him will be coach. This guy just seems like a weasel. He knows that a weak personality will be best for him because he can just blame the coach when the team fails in order to keep his job.

BOYCOTT THE DOLPHINS UNTIL ROSS SELLS THE TEAM!!

dusty bottoms - YOU'RE A MORON NOW GTFO

tj,
Said the same thing in a previous post. The Dolphins will go full circle and come back to Bowles and announce that they wanted to continue to build on the success they experienced at the end of the season and Bowels gives them that best chance as far as they are concerned.

These idiots had at least 6 weeks to make a list of the coaches that they wanted and obviously they really thought they would get the mediocre mustache. I have no problem with Bowles, but you just let your DC walk, so if Bowles is the fallback why waste all this time? Supposedly they fired Sparano to get a jump on the hiring process. That was all bulls hit. If Philbin is the choice they need to go hard after Flynn because they will not have a chance at getting Luck or RG3. Not interviewing Carmichael and Winston Moss is a mistake.

Dusty---hate to say this as a 40-year fan, but in answer to your question--no, I really don't think it even matters much at this point.

This franchise has become rudderless, adrift, and toxic to the best football people. And it won't be getting any better for a long time.

Why is Carmichael from the Saints not being given a look? This guy knows how to get the most out of his offenses

Its pretty funny that most fans hated Nolan in the beginning of the season and now hes a God. Hopefully we can find a coordinator that can get the defense playing well for the ENTIRE season instead of just half of it this time.

If Daboll could get anyone else to hire him, he'd be gone too.

Bowles, Philbin or McCoy!!! Wtf would u let Nolan go w/ either of these choices? How r any of these an upgrade to Sparano!! Can't believ we're the new raiders of the NFL...

Cry and cry some more it's said day to be dolphin fan with all the. Negitive talk from all the fair weather fans

Looks like its Philbin or McCoy. Im betting Bowles gets promoted to dc. I just dont see a good dc coming in to work under Ross, Ireland, or the other two hc candidates.

Im sure with Ireland running the show. The Dolphins hc position is now considered:

"DEAD MAN WALKING"!

Excellent.. great progress... well then, carry on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYyOkQUyJZM

The next Def. Coord. is going to be Bowles and the HC is.....McCoy!!! and the Offense is going to be West Coast all the time.

In truth, none of them are an upgrade over Sparano. Fisher would have been, but obviously that ship sailed.

That's not to say Sparano was great. Clearly, he had some limitations. But nothing about any of these guys suggests a true upgrade.

Years ago, I remember warning folks on another blog that the LAST thing you wanted was an owner who behaved like a fan, firing coaches every couple of years and never establishing any continuity.

Folks, that is your team now.

The Dolphins are an expansion team without the draft choices....or coaches! LOL

Boycott this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utyDw4rvli8

I guess QB has become the least of our problems! LOL

Charles Davis has Phins taking Trent Richardsin at 8-9. I know it's not trendy right now to draft rb's high but I really like the way he runs & catches. I think he's going to be special. It would be nice if they could trade back a couple spots & get him.

Todd Bowles is the right pick. He already has a good rapport with the players who played hard for him the last 3 games with nothing to play for. His stoic demeanor on the sideline was very impressive. This team needs someone who can remain calm among all the chaos. Bowles reminds me of Tony Dungy or Mike Tomlin. I think the man is just waiting for his chance to make a big name for himself and if the Dolphins don't keep him, we will regret the day when he goes to another team and is a winner.

THEY ARE THE GUMBY CARTOON OF FOOTBALL NOW. LIKE IN THE GUMBY WHERE THE LAWN MOWERS GO INSIDE THE HOUSE AND SCARE MR AND MRS GUMBY AND THE DOG POKY UNTIL GUMBY MAKE IT STOP

Matter of fact, it's ironic Philbin's name's in the final 3 candidates, considering Matt Flynn is a fa this offseason.

Philbin's probably most likely to be our next hc unless he pulls himself out of the hunt.

Philbin scares me. His son just died, exactly how focused could you expect anyone to be this soon after such a tragic loss. That really concerns me.

???

So, we're going to reinvigorate the fanbase by losing out on Fisher because of Ireland.

Losing Nolan because of...........I dunno.........Ireland maybe(Who knows, in all fairness, Ross and Ireland may know their new Coach was going to release Nolan anyways)?

We won't be getting that first round QB(unless Ireland makes a retarded stretch of a reach. Wouldn't put it past him at this point).

So, what is going to reinvigorate the fan base again?

Outside of making Pamela Anderson a mionority owner, I haven't a clue.

I don't think down grading our Head Coach and Defensive coordinator is going to do it. Drafting a project QB in the third round won't do it either.

Hey, maybe Jeffy's plan all along was to bring back a NEW Improved Chad Henne and actually have a real Quarterback Competition THIS TIME AROUND.

I can't wait! We got a wanna be Ball Boy dictating to a puppet first time Coordinator parading as Head Coach. If things continue on par, I'm expecting the Olividotti hiring to be announced by morning.

Oh yeah, that oughtta get the Fanbase back in the seats!

Let's GO Acorns!

so true tj, sad sad day

So they fire Sparano, then possibly wait 3 weeks to announce they're retaining Bowles, minus his defensive coordinator, and maybe without Daboll? You can't make this stuff up.

ross and ireland have destroyed what we love and the only thing we can do about it is hit him in his pocketbook

Then again, Ross said he likes hiring young people with something to prove.

"COULD TODD BOWLES BECOME THE SHOCKER PICK AS HC"?

Like another poster has posted, neither Philbin nor McCoy are upgrades to Sparano. So why not Bowles?

GARY DAVIS DID YOU NEVER SEE THAT GUMBY?.,HE IS OUTSIDE AND THEN THE LAWN MOWER GOES ALL CRAZY AND GOES IN THERE HOUSE AND SCARES GUMBYS FAMILY AND THERE DOG SO THE LAWN MOWER IS LIKE JEFF IRELAND//DO YOU UNDERSTAND NOW

Do not try to understand him.
He lives in a world all his own.

Hey! That's it! It all makes sense.

Ross and Ireland just don't realize it's too late to Suck for Luck!

Armando, please use your FABULOUS inside sources to let Ross and Mick Head it's to late to Suck for Luck!

HURRY!!!!

anyone is an upgrade to sparano

My desire for next year to be an epic failure to force Miami to finally get a top draft pick (which seems to be the only way they'll go after a 1st-rd QB) is going down EXACTLY as planned.

Really, it's doing nothing on my part, but asking the Miami organization to run as disorganized as usual. PERFECT!!!

Next up, get some joker HC with limited organizational skills (I hope it's not Bowles, he's the most talented of the remaining candidates and someone I believe can be an excellent HC). Also someone who just went through a personal disaster. Oh, there's Philbin.

Then, draft a lineman with the 1st pick in the Draft. Then let Ireland be Ireland and draft a bunch of role players.

Then keep Matt Moore, and bring in Orton to back him up (YES)!

Then go 1-15, 2-14 (just like Moore helped to in Carolina).

Then, it's QB CITY FOR ME, and you yahoos can come for the ride too, though you were thrilled to see a lineman drafted AGAIN!

So devious, yet beautiful in it's simplicity. Just let Miami be Miami!!!

Yeah, I'm getting that impression, lol. Jeff Ireland is a claymation lawnmower? Um, ok.

"Charles Davis has Phins taking Trent Richardson at 8-9. I know it's not trendy right now to draft rb's high but I really like the way he runs & catches. I think he's going to be special. It would be nice if they could trade back a couple spots & get him."

That would be an awesome pick. You can never have enough elite offensive threats. Touchdowns, touchdowns, and more touchdowns....

McCoy the new coach

yes just like ingram was suppose to be such a great pick
