The Dolphins are making progress in their effort to hire a head coach -- at least they seem closer to getting there.
The club yesterday made the pivot away from some candidates and is "on to the second round" of interviews, I've been told by the club.
I am looking for confirmation this means no new candidates will be added to the current pool although I believe that to be the case. I have been told several candidates have been cut from the process -- one of them being Chicago Bears special teams coach Dave Toub, who was the first candidate to interview for the job.
Toub was told Monday he was no longer being considered for the job. He re-signed with the Bears today.
An NFL source tells me Cincinnati defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer has also been cut from consideration.
So what does this mean?
It means the next Dolphins coach will be selected among the following group: Todd Bowles, Joe Philbin, and Mike McCoy.
Philbin, the Green Bay offensive coordinator, will interview again on Wednesday. McCoy, the Broncos offensive coordinator, will interview again Thursday. I am trying to confirm when Bowles will get his second interview, assuming it is not happening today.
[UPDATE: I should have mentioned this earlier, but Philbin is clearly eager to have the job. There were questions about his emtional state following the drowning death of his 21-year-old son last week. There were questions whether Philbin would be willing to relocate his family. He is willing to relocate his family, a source close to Philbin told me.]
All the interviews will be in New York, where owner Stephen Ross is spending the next couple of days.

Lou -
Maybe they'll re-sign Bowles as Assistant Coach / DC and hire McCoy as the HC. SO that is why Ireland and Bowles will be there this weekend.

if its down to these three i say bowles should be the guy. he showed what he can do with the present talent and personnel. he went 2-1 against all division opponents, and should have been 3-0 if not for a poor second half in N.E. The guy deserves a shot. what has Philbin or McCoy done in HC role

Ok, I don't post a lot but I have read the column and comments everyday in this website at least for the past 2 years...Now I read people defending Sparano after we all wanted him gone...IMO he deserved to get fired, he didn't know how to adjust to the other teams and he look unprepared and outmatched constantly...And I am pretty sure that if I search posts from the first seven weeks of last season I'll find most of you saying that Nolan Had to go because he was doing a terrible job... Grow up and make up your minds, don't hate the Dolphins at everything they do...

Agree 1000% Todd's Board!!! Unfortunately it's too late for that now
Posted by: robbyhernz | January 17, 2012 at 07:26 PM
Plain and simple!! When you allow the National Champion Florida Gators come to half time of the Dolphins vs Broncos game when Tebow is there and the Hurricanes play at Sun Life, it tells how bright he is!!!

if dolphins are kicking everyone to the curb, whats ireland still doing here???????????nolan and sparano couldnt trust the rat!!
Posted by: greg z. | January 17, 2012 at 07:07 PM
It's simple in my honest opinion.
Ross is keeping Ireland for one last draft to solidify the O-line. That's it. He's sure Ireland won't find any sleepers and trade away multiple picks for average players.
Once Ross couldn't get Harbaugh(because of Ireland), he secretly went into suck for luck mode.
He kept Ireland! Right off the bat, that's a great move that right there..........if you're trying to lose big time.
Then he resigned SpOrano knowing he'd want to bring in more Cowboy cast offs that weren't worth a shyt. And they weren't. More of the same.
He vetoed Orton and Ok's Moore in the hopes he would do for us what he did for Carolina. It almost worked.
Now he will get the absolutely worst Coaches he can find, so together they can the first pick in next years draft.
Then he'll use his solid O-line and first pick of the 2013 draft to lure in his new General Manager and Head Coach!
What else could Ross do? Parcell's quit on him and he got stuck with a freaking Ball Boy!
Bottom's Up in 2013!!!!

The top end of this organization is so short sighted. They made a big deal over the fact they were going to go out and hire a big-name guy, a track record guy. And then, of course, are reduced to what we have now. So they look even more idiotic because they can't follow through on their own promises.
I'm glad Fisher didn't land in Miami. His body of work really speaks to his mediocre record. Philbin might be great, if he had another Aaron Rodgers. I like the Tebow story, but let's be honest about the amount of offensive production under McCoy with Tebow and Orton.
We suck. Might as well Hire Coach Bowles and save some money.
Every year we're first class suckers. DUMP IRELAND NOW.

I don't care how much of a pompous asss Billick is. I don't care if he did make a blunder headed call and helped us not go winless.
He has to be better than the other guys out there. He can bring Singletary as his DC.
Lets go Old School on their assses!
Beats the hull outta Philbin, McCoy and Zimmer!
Get the pompous asss on the phone, he and Ireland will be like twp peas in a pod!

Why you think he blew them away?
Posted by: oscar canosa | January 17, 2012 at 07:46 PM
ESPN -- I am the same. I wanted Fisher, then Carmichael and now I am down to McCoy. I will support whomever is selected as the new HC.
Posted by: Texas_Dolfan | January 17, 2012 at 07:48 PM
it is obvious that Ireland and Ross want a "yes man" as coach. Ross wants to have GM authority and Ireland is his puppet. Together they are going to hire a puppet for head coach. This is why Fisher was not hired. This is getting pathetic!!!

What a joke Zimmer should get a 2nd look. What about Carmichael yet McCoy gets a 2nd look for what Denver ran 90% of the time with Tebow.
No Winston Moss not even a look please tell me Philbin is bringing Flynn and Finley. It seems to me Ross is trying his best to put the worst out on the field maybe he is trying to move the Dolphins out of Miami to LA he is star struck.

When the attendance gets low enough Ross will threaten to move the team and the state will offer to build him in a new stadium if he stays.
He will then depreciate the stadium and the next $500mil that he and his partners make will be tax free.
Revenue + Depreciation = Bigger profit that full stadium
The team is like the corpse that gets found by a drifter and sodomized.

With Nolan gone I could live with Spags and going 4-3 D. Dump Solai use that money for Flynn and draft a RT for protection. Or a ball hawk safety.
As PSU homer I wouldnt mind trading down and drafting Still and getting an extra second. Odrick, Starks, and Still would kill the middle.

We played some pretty good football the last half of he season.
I'm good with hiring Philbin, retaining Daboll, and hiring a DC who doesn't change things too much.
A right tackle, a veteran safety, an elite tight end...an olb to push Misi.
We could compete despite Ross's failings......

Broncos closer to losing Mike McCoy to Miami Dolphins
The D enver P ost(1 hour ago)
Mike McCoy worked closely with Tim Tebow this season. (The D enver P ost)There's a strong chance Broncos head coach John Fox will be interviewing for a new offensive coordinator.
The team's current offensive coordinator, Mike McCoy, is heading back to Miami for a second interview Thursday for the Dolphins' head coaching position.
McCoy had first interviewed Monday for the Miami job.
McCoy had never been a head coaching candidate before this offseason, but his prospects surged because of how he helped bring along the unique skill set of quarterback Tim Tebow.
The Broncos won seven of Tebow's first eight starts, a run that led to the AFC West title and a first-round playoff win against Pittsburgh.
-----------------------------------------------
This convinces me Ireland is trying to hammer out a deal to finally land us the long sought after first round quarterback.
When I asked my sources within the Bat-Cave, they informed me that Ireland has offered Elway our 1st and 2nd round picks this year and next for a package deal including Coach McCoy, Tim Tebow and a very promising up and coming ball boy in Dante Horkowitz.
Horkowitz was tutored at Penn State University in the finer arts of Ball Handling. Said an anonymous source: "He looking GOOD!"
