Stephen Ross is done working in New York for the week. His job as a Big Apple real estate mogul is done. His job as the Dolphins owner who has spent the past four days interviewing potential head coach candidates is also mostly done.
Time to come home.
Time to name a coach.
Ross will board his private jet at around 8 a.m. this morning and head to South Florida, where he'll arrive around 11 a.m. He is expected to have with him a decision or near-decision on Miami's next coach when he returns. It's unclear if the new Dolphins' coach will be riding with him from New York, where the interviews were conducted.
Denver offensive coordinator Mike McCoy is considered the leading candidate -- at least that's what he considered himself, as I reported two days ago. Unconfirmed reports, based on dubious tweets from CBS 4 in Denver and the assistant director of communications for the Mountain West Conference, say it's McCoy. I'm trying to confirm through, you know, legitimate means.
Green Bay offensive coordinator Joe Philbin and Miami interim coach Todd Bowles are also candidates.
[UPDATE: NFL Insider Danny More said on the Armando and Perk radio show this morning that Philbin has been eliminated as a candidate. He also reported McCoy returned to Denver following his interview with the Dolphins. That would suggest McCoy won't be on the plane with Ross when he lands.]
[UPDATE 2: A source close to Philbin tells me the Green Bay offensive coordinator has not been told one way or another what his status with the Dolphins is. Sheesh!]
[UPDATE 3: The Mountain West communications director says he has no inside information on McCoy.]
[UPDATE 4: The Dolphins contingent landed in Fort. Lauderdale. McCoy indeed was not on the plane as More said. Neither were any of the other two coaching candidates. GM Jeff Ireland and senior vice president for football operations Dawn Aponte got off the plane and returned to the team's facility. Aponte's role on the trip would obviously be one of budget and contract negotiation.]
[UPDATE 5: A Bowles family source tells me the interim coach has not been told one way or another what his status with the Dolphins is at this time.]

What has he done ?

Come on guys...just like the article suggest, there is no way to really know how an assistant coach will do as a HC.
There are examples of greatness (Tomlin, Payton) come to mind, and examples of failures.
Just because the Packers have Rodgers as their QB does not mean Philbin will make the Fins 15-1 in the near future.
We hired the "HOTTEST" offensive coordinator a few year back in Cam Cameron. He had the Chargers on fire and they were scoring 30+ points per game...but that never translated into points for the Fins the following year.
I like McCoy for two reasons:
1. He is a QB minded coach
2. He is young and hungry to prove himself

Now they will trade up to draft rg3. Thats the only good thing they can do!

Ross: "Despite the fact that Jeff has no head coaching experience whatsoever he's a joy to work with and one of the brightest young minds in the NFL and I have every reason to believe he can do anything he puts his mind to."

ALoco does talk some crap and can't even spell most of it right.
Posted by: 42LyleBlackwood | January 20, 2012 at 11:33 AM
McCoy is the pick because he worked with Matt Moore-Matt Moore loves him and Matt Moore is our QB for at least the next two years or until Ireland gets fired. The reason Matt Moore will be our QB is because Ireland is the only GM who doesn't think QB is an important position in today's NFL – that’s why he has had so much success in his career at Dallas and Miami - you know, with both teams being perennial challengers for the championship every year.
Posted by: W. Fontes Kotite | January 20, 2012 at 11:34 AM
ONLY IF OUR TEAM COULD BE AS EXCITING AS ALOCO'S 3 MINUTES AS DOLPHINS GM. WE WOULD BE BY FAR THE GREATEST TEAM IN NFL HISTORY!
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | January 20, 2012 at 11:34 AM
I think it will be McCoy because it is the one of the positions Ireland has no idea how to evaluate.

-----Breaking news----------
ALoco names his Lizard as the GM of the Miami Dolphins...
Posted by: Clue | January 20, 2012 at 11:36 AM
NH, I hope you right, because I am not optomistic about McCoy except for the fact that he has no track record and he will start his story as HC here if hired.
Philbin brought a successful system, the QB coach would have followed, they are very close and that guy is incredible. Possible Matt Flynn coming, good competition, not sure if he is the guy or not, but looked good in that system.
Philbin out of all the options looked like he at kleast had a recipe that worked. That Denver recipe was just silly.
Posted by: Poizen | January 20, 2012 at 11:36 AM
ooops sorry, QB is one of the positions Irelnad doesn't know how to evaluate.
Posted by: Texas_Dolfan | January 20, 2012 at 11:36 AM
LAY OFF OF ALOCO GUYS. HIS 3 MINUTES AS DOLPHIN GM COST STEVE ROSS $5O MILLION DOLLARS.
ALOCO CAN NOW AFFORD TO ADD "SPELL CHECK" TO HIS COMPUTER. BUT WE ALL KNOW HE WONT!

Armando,
What happened to the plane updates. Did Ross land yet. Did he get out of the plane alone?
You are slacking, Amigo!

CONSIDERING WHAT WE ENDED UP WITH AS THE LEADING CANDIDATES. HELL. I WOULD EVEN TAKE ERIC MANGINI RIGHT NOW. LOL

Mangina is an upgrade over McCoy it seems.
See what I did there?
Mangini...Mangina...
Yea, I know, brilliant.
Thanks
Posted by: Poizen | January 20, 2012 at 11:46 AM
The only good thing about all this mess is that SparAnus went to the Jets. Shame that Cam Camaron (shrimp) is not with the revolting Patriots.
McCoy will fly every week in Ross' plane to collect the rent of his NYC properties while Rubber play to be the HC.
Have you remarked that Ross is a kind of mixing between Officer Dibble and Mr. Slate ?
Posted by: marchcool | January 20, 2012 at 11:46 AM
dolphin fan in georgia,
Armando has no update because plane hasnt landed yet.
UPDATE:
Ross' jet spotted over Kansas airspace, enroute to LA X airport. Ross thinks he's already moved the team.

Wasn't Denvers D better than their O? Figures we didn't interview their D coordinator. That just makes too much sense!

Pretty amazing fanbase in Miami. All we listened to for two weeks was people b*tching and complaining that Fisher was going to be hired. 'Why don't we hire an upcoming coach?'....'Why don't we hire an assistant?'....'Why don't we look for the next Tomlin or McCarthy?'. Well isn't that what we're potentially doing if we hire McCoy? Listen I don't like this move either, I wanted Fisher all along....but Ross made a complete 'cluster f*ck' of the whole thing. So this is what we get. I wanted Zimmer too but we weren't in those interviews.
So how about everybody shut the f*ck up and give the next guy a CHANCE to coach before everyone dumps all over him. You guys would have said the same thing about McCarthy before he was hired in GB. Let's give the guy a chance....if he sucks, he's out next year and maybe we end up with a QB like Barkley. Regardless of what happens, the guy deserves a chance, just as Daboll deserved a chance.
Posted by: Craig M | January 20, 2012 at 11:53 AM
ozcar,
I wanna see Giants-Pats in the SB. Nothing would be more gratifying for me than to see Brady suffer another SB "beatdown". Via the Giants I might add!
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | January 20, 2012 at 11:54 AM
During the 2002 season, after several poor showings by the Giants' offense, Sean Payton's role in play-calling was taken over by then head coach Jim Fassel. Under Fassel the offense improved and propelled the team to a wild-card playoff berth. While Payton was still ostensibly in charge of the offense, his role in the team was clearly diminished and had he not been hired away by the Dallas Cowboys, he likely would have been fired.
hmmmm

Craig M,
Aren't you the one who said the same thing about Henne. All you did was praise him. Where did that get you? I guess you are going to tell us that Henne should be brought back and given another chance. Until this organization gives us somthing besides Barnum and Bailey descisions then we will continue to question this organization.
Posted by: dolphin fan in georgia | January 20, 2012 at 11:59 AM
So it sounds like it is going to be McCoy. There is a report that he is headed to Miami now.
And there is a rumor that Del Rio may be headed to Miami too. As what they did not say. I am curious to see what assistants will be headed to Miami or if he'll keep a bunch of what we had.
Posted by: Texas_Dolfan | January 20, 2012 at 11:59 AM

Craig interesting input for the blog.
One problem...
If everyone shut the F up, we would have nothing to talk about.
So I really do not mind the nay sayers at this point, because if they were not here I would have nothing to read.
Just sayin.

Projected Salry caps heading into next season:
Pats $99.9 million
Dolphins $114.3 million
Boy are we spending wisely! We are over paying acorns while the Pats are underpaying studs!
Let the Ireland apologists begin their irrational defense!

Please do not bring up Henne any longer, I have been so seperated from that discussion. Bashing Henne at this point is useless and unwarranted. So please let that sleeping topic sleep.
I for one would love for him to sign back.... But for his sake, and this blog, I pray he does not.
