« Which elite free agent should the Dolphins sign? | Main | Question on Manning is whether he'll play at all »

Priority would be Manning first, Flynn as fallback

For five days now I've been telling you the Dolphins are on the quarterback hunt -- again.

I told you Saturday that Peyton Manning is a possibility for the team and that he's prominent on the team's radar, assuming he is available and wants to play in 2012. The point was echoed by national and other local news sources Sunday and Monday.

As you know the hiring of Joe Philbin makes Matt Flynn another possibility in the team's chase of a starting franchise quarterback. Philbin was the Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator and is familiar with Flynn, the Packers backup.

But which one is the chief priority?

Is it Manning at age 36? or Flynn who is largely unproven?

A team source e-mailed me this afternoon that the priority is Manning. This coincides with news out of Mobile, Ala., where the Senior Bowl is going to be played Saturday. A league source there tells The Herald's Barry Jackson that the Dolphins have shown no interest in Flynn as of yet -- not even informal interest.

Now, teams are not allowed to show formal interest in soon-to-be free agents at this time. But at those Senior Bowl practices, where agents and team personnel departments mingle on the sideline, it's common for preliminary signs of future interest to be displayed. In fact, it's almost expected.

The Dolphins have shown no such interest in Flynn.

That combined with the e-mail tells me the Dolphins will wait until there is a clear course of action on Manning -- when they know if he's going to be in Indy or on the market, when they know his health -- before they decide what other direction to take.

If Manning is out there, if Flynn is available in free agency, at least we now know the team views Manning as the priority.

Why?

The club believes a healthy Peyton Manning is simply a better gamble than an unproven Matt Flynn. Flynn is younger and will be cheaper (although not by a lot) but clearly the Dolphins are more drawn to the idea of a proven NFL performer -- despite his advancing age and greater risk of his neck injury resurfacing.

For new coach and odinseye, its a team game only when its convenient to say so, and its a qb game when it suits them.

Colts with Peyton, perennial playoff team
Colts without Peyton, worst team in the league
Pats with Brady, perennial playoff team
Pats without Brady, lose to lowly fins in the AFC

Drew Brees coulndt beat the 49ers. Eli did. This is a league of wins and losses. Pure and simple, Eli's a winner. He wins when it's needed most.

If Eli's not a top 5 qb, the Dolphins need one just like him. Just keep counting the sb rings baby! LOL

There are 8 better than Eli.

None better than Georgia, ain't she.

My final comment, Eli so far has been MVP of the playoffs. Seen it with my own eyes. I was never even an Eli fan, I still am not, but...they guy DELIVERS WHEN IT COUNTS!

Did you watch the game. Eli didn't beat anyone. They needed their field goal kicker. The 49ers beat themselves or rather, their QB beat them when he could throw a pass for 9 minutes.

Ignore that reality though. Here is a new one for you.

Marino is one of the best QB's of all time and arguably the best pure passer ever. Played in one Superbowl.

Dilfer doesn't even rate as a QB. Won a Superbowl.

Your arguments would say Dilfer was top 5 and Marino amounted to a flash in the pan.

Your opinions on QB's are as valid as lifestyle advice from a crack-addicted homeless guy.

As I have known greater than Eli, is Joseph, Jacob, Jonah, and a few others that I can't recall as of now.

Come on YG, now your just making up stuff and pretending we said it.

This ain't kindy Garten Homie!

I guess the front office hasn't learned much about acquiring "damaged goods" from the Daunte Culpepper trade. Yeah, for every Culpepper, there's a Drew Brees. However, it's tough to come back from three neck surgeries in a short period of time and still be effective. Flynn is the QB to build around. One, he's young. Two, he knows the system. I look at Flynn now and see another Matt Schaub, an unproven backup who can blossom into a star. I hope Ireland and Ross are reading this.

Stafford 0 playoff wins
Dalton 0 playoff wins
Newton 0 playoff wins
Rivers born loser choke artist
Ryan 0 playoff wins.

Eli, 7 playoff wins, 1 SB and possible 1 more.

One guy on this list has been in the league as long as Eli. Two are rookies even, another in his third year and then fourth.

Throwing fairness and judgement out the window huh?

I guess it's OK then to compare Eli to guys like Farve, Marino, Kelly, Fouts..........

Oh wait.....there's NO comparrison!

Nuff Said!!!!

New Coach Wanted

Your responses are those of a simpleton.
Go home to your rat infested (your brothers) and moldy (your children) cardboard box home where possum (extended relative) is the breakfast of cham...er losers.

L - O - S - E - R!!!

Damn new coach wanted, 1st its about his statement he is a top 5 qb. Then going out and proving it. The greatest career number any qb can produce is a sb win.

You asked me earlier to provide evidence to support my argument. So I did that and it proved you did no homework before making your own baseless argument.

Now like I said, the best career number a qb can produce is a sb win for his team. Eli has did this and now threatning to duplicate it. While you still sit back sipping cheap wine and basically calling him the loser! LOL

Gotta remember, Giants had practically no running game for some reason this year. Yet they still won their division. Their defensive front is really good, but as someone stated earlier, their secondary is barely average.

So you can't deny him role of a significant contributor, at least this year. He HAS been on a tear lately, and it's this combination with his now healthy defensive line playing lights out that allowed him to beat teams they lost to earlier on this year in GB and SF.

I'm not a huge Eli fan, but if you're putting Andy Dalton before him to suit your point, it's kind of cheap. Dalton has a good defense like Eli does, and he is not good as Eli at least yet.

Man, you made put Georgia on my Mind, by Ray Charles, to get away from these inhuman commentaries. Thankyou. GN.

Whoa, dude.

you have to go with flynn. ireland, don't be an idiot. peyton will only buy you a year tops. STOP IT

Ok not to make anyone mad but Peyton Manning is the Colts. Please correct me if Im wrong they won 1 game all season ? They need Peyton, they dont have the back up to lose him. I think the smart decision is to keep him and go to the Super Bowl next year..He takes them there all the time with out him they are No Good anymore...
Iam a Colts Fan. But if we lose Peyton I will go elsewhere. Where ever he goes..I suppoted them this whole season because of Peyton. They are my team because of him so I will support the Colts win or lose.

I miss you Peyton Come back soon.

Look people,, If Manning was healthy the Colts wouldn't be the #1 pick,He would be back with the Colts with his bonus and we wouldn't be having this crap to talk about. But he's not healthy and the Colts are planning they're future w/o him. Why would we want a unhealthy Manning ? Use your head people...

Ohio dolpfan, Goodell is right in what he is doing. It seems every months more and more old players are suing the NFL over concussions. The so called real era of football. As a cowboys fan I would I would hate to face the dolphins with manning as qb.

Flynn is not proven. he could be the next Matt Cassel. Be careful what You wish for. Flynn has top notch Wide Receivers in GB. If he goes to a team that isn't Wide Receiver rich, then he is just an average QB. I say go hard after RG3.Flynn is a 2 game wonder. Mark that down!

Sign Manning so we can go through this same crap in two years.

Why is everyone is on the Flynn bandwagon because of what? That's right one crazy game! One game made this kid the greatest thing since sliced bread. Every back up is not a Tom Brady in the waiting. Now having said that why hasn't Matt Moore earned a shot at being in the mix. Moore may or may not be the answer but everyone is banking on a one game wonder. Hmmmm! Brady Quinn had a crazy game like that once, lets go after him - ha ha. Bring in Flynn, but its his duty to take the job from Moore. As for manning, nerve issues in the neck typically affect the arm. That is risk they have to think about. The arm strength may never be the same.

I cant rememeber when this douche actually reported anything that happened. First Fisher then Mccoy. MANNING IS NOT ABLE TO PASS A PHYSICAL and IS NOT A FA. Here's a thought the mgmt of this disfunctional mess should focus on someone that is not ready for AARP or injured. Trent Green, DUANTE, Penny, All old , all injured and we are here yet agian talking about a stop gap QB vs. a 15 year franchise player.

I think Manning is done.

I'm a Patriots fan but here's my take. I've been saying for months Peyton goes to Miami. It makes sense on so many levels. Peyton gets to stay on the Eastern time zone, Florida has tax breaks, beautiful weather, the hype of the current Miami sports scene, the advertising money available in Miami, playing on grass and the fact that he'll get to play Brady twice a year, along with the Marino connection all lead to Peyton heading to Miami. And as far as on the field of play, Miami has a stud filled O-line with Long, Pouncey, Incognito, Colombo, a stud WR in Marshall, great options in Bess and Fasano and one of the most talented RBs in the NFL in Reggie Bush as well as a beastly Daniel Thomas. That offense would click! The D is good enough to compete. Manning to Miami is probably going to happen and Miami will win the Division or the Wild Card if it does.

Why would we acquire a new QB? We already have two elite QBs, in Henne and Moore. We have an abundance of riches.

Why would we want RG3? We want to *win* a super bowl, don't we?

I think the fins should trade for Manning and then get another QB in the draft but I have full confidence that Ireland will blow it

How can a Quarterback drafted in the 7th round be considered a franchise quarterback, by only starting two games? Even Tom Brady had time to develop. If they are willing to spend that type of money on a 7th rounder, they might as well invest some time in Matt Moore. I say pursue RGIII or draft the next best after him and develop them, if they don't pan out draft one of the big three next year.

As long as I live, I will never understand how people who know absolutely nothing about the game of football, much less have never played the sport can rise to such levels of power within the sport. The NFL has a long rich history of morons in charge that make horrible decisions based on a persons past and they don't consider the future of their team or the future of a player. That being said, if the Indianapolis Colts let Peyton go, there is a serious problem that they are not willing to address or gamble on. Why in the name of all thats holy don't GM's and owners understand that a team would never get rid of a player of his caliber if they felt he was still able to compete in the fashion we've become accustomed to? I have been a lifelong fins fan and this ownership and management is an absolute disgrace and completely ignorant about this game. Being rich doesn't automatically make you more intelligent, I just wish more people understood that. If we actually pursue Peyton and get him, I will give up on this team until Jeff Ireland and his boss are no longer associated with my beloved Dolphins.

Mario Williams !!! If we did transition to a 4-3 could you imagine a line book ended by Wake and Williams !?!?
IMO Manning and Flynn are both to risky to mortgage our future on. For the right price yes take a shot but not for what the market will likely demand. We more than likely will have no chance at Luck or RG3 and Moore played well enough to a least earn himself another season.
Carl Nicks is a beast and I'd love to get him for the right price. But I think our best option would be drafting an elite RT, a guard in the later rounds and leaving Carrey at guard for now.

I say pass on Flynn. The guy has 2 good games and less than 150 attempts and people are clamoring for him to be 'the guy'. I'm tired of the Dolphins and the fan base going after another team's backup as their QB. Doesn't anyone remember the AJ Feely experiment - Flynn will be the next AJ, Kolb, Cassell, etc. I'm tired of us picking up another team's trash and claiming it as a treasure.

Do what it takes to get RGIII

Hey miami Front please don't get goofy -no wait- goofier on us
1. FLYNN 2. RGIII 3. ORTON 4. TANNEHILL. Why sign peyton ? 36 YRS. OLD LAME NECK, USED UP ARM& LEGS WITH the SPEED OF A GLACIER - Go young & don't forget ORTON - he has proven that he can perform in a top 10 fashion with the right offensive co.'s which we finally have - its not ORTONS fault that he had lousy def. Teams behind him -I.E. DAN THE MAN - draft offense wr.- te - ol then def. Come on guys were close stop screwin' things up!

honestlydude, flynn in both his starting games played better than Aaron Rodgers usually does, not to mentioned he lost to the patriots by 1 and beat the lions with an electric performance. Manning is done. 1 hit from Justin Tuck, Dwight Freeny, etc.... would probably lead to further neck problems, hes too old, and if we take him and hes a bust it will kill our chances to get flynn.Im tired of has been's like manning. Its time for someone who will be.
