For five days now I've been telling you the Dolphins are on the quarterback hunt -- again.
I told you Saturday that Peyton Manning is a possibility for the team and that he's prominent on the team's radar, assuming he is available and wants to play in 2012. The point was echoed by national and other local news sources Sunday and Monday.
As you know the hiring of Joe Philbin makes Matt Flynn another possibility in the team's chase of a starting franchise quarterback. Philbin was the Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator and is familiar with Flynn, the Packers backup.
But which one is the chief priority?
Is it Manning at age 36? or Flynn who is largely unproven?
A team source e-mailed me this afternoon that the priority is Manning. This coincides with news out of Mobile, Ala., where the Senior Bowl is going to be played Saturday. A league source there tells The Herald's Barry Jackson that the Dolphins have shown no interest in Flynn as of yet -- not even informal interest.
Now, teams are not allowed to show formal interest in soon-to-be free agents at this time. But at those Senior Bowl practices, where agents and team personnel departments mingle on the sideline, it's common for preliminary signs of future interest to be displayed. In fact, it's almost expected.
The Dolphins have shown no such interest in Flynn.
That combined with the e-mail tells me the Dolphins will wait until there is a clear course of action on Manning -- when they know if he's going to be in Indy or on the market, when they know his health -- before they decide what other direction to take.
If Manning is out there, if Flynn is available in free agency, at least we now know the team views Manning as the priority.
Why?
The club believes a healthy Peyton Manning is simply a better gamble than an unproven Matt Flynn. Flynn is younger and will be cheaper (although not by a lot) but clearly the Dolphins are more drawn to the idea of a proven NFL performer -- despite his advancing age and greater risk of his neck injury resurfacing.

Flynn isn't 2nd on my priority list at all, and apparently is not either on the Dolphins list. Sorry Armando, but Ireland has my vote on this one.
Just this one so far.
1st on my list is griffin or Luck (not likely)
2nd is FA like Manning or a surprise entry
3rd, is 2-3rd round QBs in the draft.
4th is Flynn (not convince he should be on the list either)

BTW, Flynn fanatics,
Flynn's first NFL start was a 3 TD 3 pick game.
He's 1-1 W-L record, career.

Are you kidding,a healthy Manning would mean 14-2
Posted by: John | January 25, 2012 at 06:36 PM

What does "healthy" mean? A doctor can deem him healthy....as in ready to play....as in passes the physical. It doesn't mean he won't be a shadow of his former self.

Posted by: dusty bottoms | January 25, 2012 at 06:44 PM
Believe as you like Dusty.
Saw the film. Wasn't impressed, personally.
Has a lot more in common with M. Moore, than Rogers to me.
But I always like smart QB's over big armed dumb ones, so at least he has that going for him. Not a horrible chance to take, but not anywhere near the top for me.
Lucky for you, Ireland is in charge not me ;)
Posted by: JS in LA | January 25, 2012 at 06:47 PM
We are completely screwed if manning chooses the jets. With him and the pats we won't make the playoffs in the next five years. We need him to pick us, but why would he? Jets have better receivers, better offensive line, better defense and more importantly (and I hate to say this) better and more experience coach. The only thing we could hope for is to get mark sanchez
Posted by: inimounts | January 25, 2012 at 06:50 PM
no doubt i watched that whole game and still remember being big time impressed.

Now you've added 'NFL Insider' to your duties as Peyton Manning's personal physician?
I'm amazed you could get out of checking x-rays long enough to drop by the Dolphins complex and sit in on their meetings.
Tell me, what did you, Jeff, and Steve have for lunch that day?

Sorry...but its true......

I was kinda thinking the same thing that a few of you said about Manning being a smokescreen to take the attention off of Flynn.
Nobody knows better than Philbin rather or not he's capable of running his offense.
Before all the QB talk started though i was happy with Matt Moore and drafting another QB in the 2nd or 3rd round.
I mean will still need a WR,TE,OT and possibly a pass rusher among other needs.

armundo i think you are a clown! free agency opens before the draft and before we will know if manning is actually healthy enough to play next season. manning almost has to be a last priority. if you have any interest in flynn he need to be 1st priority. he most likely will be signed before the draft. so either you go for him before you give a thought to manning or RG3 or you lose him. if you lose him you have to either trade the farm for RG3 have another draft pick in mind for QB or think manning is the answer. if you don't draft a QB than it's manning, a trade or matt moore. so i just don't see how it's even feasible to make manning your #1 thought at QB. some one is blowing smoke up your but and you're thinking it's fresh air!!

Steve Ross was raised partly in Miami(Miami Beach) and he knows us Cubans fully well. So do we know him. Armando, I would worry none about the future of the Miami Dolphins as we have never settled for less.
Posted by: oscar canosa | January 25, 2012 at 07:06 PM
I agree fully w/ JS
Posted by: beerphin | January 25, 2012 at 07:07 PM
Matt Flynn is the best fit for Our current Miami Dolphins roster. The defense has productive Pro-Bowl playmakers. The receivers aren't young pups. The rbs are competent. We lose very little and could gain a whole lot if Flynn plans out.
Manning has to much to overcome physically.
And RG3 would cost to much for a team that has foundational problems on the offensive and defensive lines.

JLo is not our idea of a Cuban woman(her very nice as- is of PR descent and, really, the only thing in her favour). Neither is Cameron Diaz(although of Cuban descent). Less see, less see(hey, redsky, others, give me a hand here). Nah, I guess you People that have never been in Miami have to come here to check it out.
Posted by: oscar canosa | January 25, 2012 at 07:17 PM
They wouldnt even consider Manning unless he passed a physical. If he is healthy, he is by far the best choice. He instantly makes us a potential super bowl team. He isnt like the has beens of Culpepper, Pennington etc. Manning is elite like Rodgers, Brady and Favre. Other than his neck injury (no doubt serious) he has been relatively healthy unlike Pennington who was injured every year. Much like Brady he can take what ever receivers you give him and make them pro bowlers unlike Culpepper who without Moss was mediocre.
Posted by: GAfin | January 25, 2012 at 07:19 PM
Hey, odin, have you ever been in Miami?

Cuban women wind up shaped like vending machines as they get older...and they still try to fit into three-sizes-too-small spandex shorts with sh*t stains on 'em. Ugh.

Salguero notes that the Dolphins have not even shown “informal interest” in Flynn behind the scenes despite coach Joe Philbin’s ties to Flynn. That’s good, because even informal interest would be tampering. Perhaps Miami is just trying to cover their collective backside.
Aaron Rodgers told Jason Wilde of ESPN Milwaukee on Wednesday that it’s a “strong possibility” the Dolphins will pursue Flynn. That’s practically evidence of tampering right there.
PFT
Tampering...good point...

You know, I think ah, Manning was, ah....you know obviously um, great and all those kinds of things.
Flynn also, is um, one of those, ah things.........guys that's really improved.........and I think he'll tell you that himself. He'll agree........at the end of the day...........um, yeah........so.
I still have to tell you, in the big scheme of pictures and things, you know, what matters most is that we resign Henne. He's been here, he knows the system and he ready for that breakout season. I really, REALLY believe that!
I've seen the TAPE on Henne!
Posted by: odinseye | January 25, 2012 at 07:28 PM
Manning guarantees the Dolphins 14-2? Is Manning going to block for himself, catch for himself, and run for himself? Is he going to play DE, DT, OLB, CB, and SS too?
Reading some of these posts brings to mind a truism: you can't fix stupid.
