« Which elite free agent should the Dolphins sign? | Main | Question on Manning is whether he'll play at all »

Priority would be Manning first, Flynn as fallback

For five days now I've been telling you the Dolphins are on the quarterback hunt -- again.

I told you Saturday that Peyton Manning is a possibility for the team and that he's prominent on the team's radar, assuming he is available and wants to play in 2012. The point was echoed by national and other local news sources Sunday and Monday.

As you know the hiring of Joe Philbin makes Matt Flynn another possibility in the team's chase of a starting franchise quarterback. Philbin was the Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator and is familiar with Flynn, the Packers backup.

But which one is the chief priority?

Is it Manning at age 36? or Flynn who is largely unproven?

A team source e-mailed me this afternoon that the priority is Manning. This coincides with news out of Mobile, Ala., where the Senior Bowl is going to be played Saturday. A league source there tells The Herald's Barry Jackson that the Dolphins have shown no interest in Flynn as of yet -- not even informal interest.

Now, teams are not allowed to show formal interest in soon-to-be free agents at this time. But at those Senior Bowl practices, where agents and team personnel departments mingle on the sideline, it's common for preliminary signs of future interest to be displayed. In fact, it's almost expected.

The Dolphins have shown no such interest in Flynn.

That combined with the e-mail tells me the Dolphins will wait until there is a clear course of action on Manning -- when they know if he's going to be in Indy or on the market, when they know his health -- before they decide what other direction to take.

If Manning is out there, if Flynn is available in free agency, at least we now know the team views Manning as the priority.

Why?

The club believes a healthy Peyton Manning is simply a better gamble than an unproven Matt Flynn. Flynn is younger and will be cheaper (although not by a lot) but clearly the Dolphins are more drawn to the idea of a proven NFL performer -- despite his advancing age and greater risk of his neck injury resurfacing.

Odin?
Aren't they about to impliment a new sysytem...

You odin! You have your norse deity eye on your fucksing ass! Dumbfuck!

Will this front office ever learn to keep quiet about their #1 priority? Harbaugh was their #1 priority, didn't get him. Fischer was their #1, didn't get him. Now Manning is their #1, what if they don't get him? It just makes them look worse when they can't land who they really want. It (somehow) makes them look more incompetent.

Censor those sick fucks!

Here - here!!

Hey oscar canosa I'm a Latino from Central America.

There it is. You can't fix stupid.

Sorry guys, but Ireland knows he doesn't have a lot of room for more mistakes and is not going to stake his entire career on a guy who's only played twice (Flynn). That's why you see no movement towards Flynn right now. However, that may change if Philbin thinks highly of him and is willing to push for him.

ozkar are you cuban, dominican republican, or cubinican republican?

Frankly, my greatest mistake was catching my ex-wife, too early. C'est la vie.

LOL

How to get a rise out of the dumb bloggers?

Just say you want Henne and you will get a bunch of heated responses.

Pricemaster TheSMF has done that about 172 times now and it works every time on all the same idiots.

Yeah, make your jokes. Have your fun.

I saw the TAPE on Colombo too and he started ALL SEASON. After another great season, I see him making the Pro Bowl right along side of HENNE!

I HAVE SEEN THE TAPE!

OR...they've smartened up. Perhaps they're stirring the Browns and Redskins into a bidding frenzy for Manning so there would be less competition for a trade with the Rams.

Naw...they're not that smart.

But, the Pus-y is important.

That would make far too much sense cosmodo so it can't be true.

Frankly, my greatest mistake was catching my ex-wife, too early. C'est la vie.

Posted by: oscar canosa | January 25, 2012 at 07:37 PM

Who did you catch her with?

I didn't think they had Mailmen back in the Stoned Age!

Of course you have to keep your secrets, but is hard as hell nowadays.

The problem with mentioning Henne is the best QB on the Dolphins or available in FA, is that all the guys who know nothing about playing the position simply repeat he sucks without ever being able to use one fact to support their position.

Anyone with any actual knowledge knows Henne has demonstrated more potential and skills than we have seen in Miami since Marino. The clueless scream Moore is better and should be the QB. They don't recognize every personnel man in the league disagrees with them; you would have to pay attention to realize that.

Man, do I miss my Pus-y(could it be)?

btw please tell me nike isnt changing our jerseys and helmets

Posted by: dusty bottoms | January 25, 2012 at 06:39 PM

No, but I sure hope Victoria Secrets redesign the cheerleaders' outfits. I'd put a tv in my bathroom for that. You know what I mean.

I agree with many bloggers before me. Peyton will not be healthy enough to play again. Three NECK surgeries in 9 months! Come on. This reminds me of the excitement over Chad Pennington (not thinking about his rubber shoulder); and all the hype over Flynn reminds me of the excitement over A.J. Feeley. Let's wake up, trade up, and FINALLY get our franchise quarterback in RG3! This guy is the real deal! This is quarterback league people. We need to get our quarterback at the top of the first round. Not some project in the 2nd and later rounds. Remember Henne?

I've been critized for bringing up the fiasco that was the dante bum culpepper expirement.
We should also move on from chad inept henne's grandfathered in as Our stating qb position by his fellow alumni owner.NO MORE CHUMP chad henne!

We only have enough room in the pool for one BIG splash?

Kick some of the lazy fat bastards out of the pool and make some room!

Christ, just cut about 5 or 6 of our TE's that were not even on the active roster all season. That outta make room for a little splash.

ALoco, get me Ireland and Aponte on the phone, PRONTO!

every personnel man in the league disagrees with them

Posted by: New Coach Wanted | January 25, 2012 at 07:44 PM

Ah so you have been in touch with every personnel man in the league huh?

What a maroon.

How bout that moniker?

Uh we do have a new coach dipshyt!

Why are some saying if we sign Manning, and If he's good for 2-3 years, we'll THEN be in the same situation as we are now?
Even if SOMEHOW we won the SB (!) and choose at 32, are you going to tell me we couldn't in the next 3 years grad a QB AT least as good as the Kellen Moores that are going to be 2nd and 3rd rounders?

The benefit of having a winning franchise is that you attract the BEST free agents, many who would play for less to be on a winner.
Why do you think we DON'T get the top guys?
Precisely. We've been LOSERS since 2008. And before that.

For those of us OVER 40 who would like to win NOW, please STHU and allow the rest of us a few years of POSSIBLE enjoyment.
Manning at QB means no "Sparano ball."
Worst scenario, Manning plays 1 year or less, we lose 1 year, and draft another QB.
Even if we sign Manning, we HAVE to draft a QB.
So, it's only money, and Ross has lots of it. It's the cap we have to deal with. We are not in great shape there.
Somebody's gonna have to go, besides Columbo, and Solai will have to bite the bullet for a couple of years.

I will now proceed to pan-broil my Rib-eye steak, then eat it.

I've always been a Henne supporter. I think everyone should want or wanted him to succeed right? I mean unless you are a Jets fan...
BUT
It will be a new system for him IF he is around. I think if Philbin WANTS to retain him and HE wants to stay then that says something, right? Does the situation make the QB or does the QB make the situation?

Appreciate the Second, Beerfin, @ 7:07pm.

Honestly I think there will be some ridiculous circus scrambling once we find out a few things.
1. Peyton 100% or not (or retire)
2. Interest level of several teams in the draft to move up/down/trade
3. News of some surprising team jumping into the Peyton Manning ring, and offering up their QB as trade bait for others.

Once that hits, then the Dolphins will have to work fast. No idea what's coming, but suspect a storm.

Weren't you-all the same commentators that blame Henning for chump henne's shortcomings?
NO MORE HENNE.We got rid of Tony Sparano. No let's get rid of his overpraised backup qb knowns as inept henne.NO MORE HENNE!

They don't recognize every personnel man in the league disagrees with them; you would have to pay attention to realize that.

Posted by: New Coach Wanted | January 25, 2012 at 07:44 PM

What do these personnel men really KNOW? How many bonafide signed sealed and delivered 1st round QB's favored by them were total busts?

Basing your opinion on what they say is dumber than dumb.

IMA,

Good Point. I've been kind of chuckling about that for days.

We MOST LIKELY can't get Luck or RGIII. So, the best we'll do in the draft is taking a QB in the 2nd round or later.

Some here make it sound like signing Manning or Flynn will change that in some kind of way.

It's gonna be an OT in the first round.

Would like to see Shauna Smith's replacement.

mik said: something stupid.

Yes, I have. Every single one of them.

Who is our OC? Who is our DC? Who is the receivers coach?

Oh my. New coaches are still wanted.

Can't let the Colombo - Carey circus continue.

New Coach Wanted

Only steers and queers come from your neck of the woods and you don't seem to have any horns so I guess that kinda narrows it down huh?

Blockhead,

How many on here demanded Brady Quinn? How many on here were adamant we needed to sign Kevin Kolb? How many were foaming at the mouth demanding we sign Orton?

Agreeing with any of the QB experts here is dumber than dumb.

88% or so of the bloggers here say Henne sucks. That is 88% of the population that had a high school education wasted on them.

The other 12% recognize talent and actually know what the Dolphins need to do: resign Henne. He is the only QB we have seen that can throw for 400 yards in a game.

mik,

Ask your mother.

NewCW I'll bet you agreed with the experts on Jamarcus Russel, Leaf and all the other first round bust QB's too. Can't have it both ways. You should recognize none of these media hairdo's know jack, and only a very few GM's are consistently good at picking talent. Bloggers vs Kipers and McShays is a wash. They get paid to talk, not be right.

New Coach Wanted

Based on your response game set and match go to me.
You got whooped you little sissy.

By the way, did your mother have any male children?

Henne threw for so many yards while being the worst in:

redzone
3rd down conversion
4th quarter perfomance

So Hennes strength is the last important thing and his weaknesses are all in the most important things. You want Henne being down by 9 in the 4th quarter of the playoffs? Not me.

New Coach Wanted, what happen to Us going after Rob Ryan? You remember that inspirational speech you posted some time late last year about him being our next head coach.Henne has been given ample time to succeed and each and everytime ?s and doubts linger.Chad sat for a year. Was the starter for three and here We are again discussing Our qb situation.Enough already! Henne should move on.He's fool's gold.

Anyone can also see that Chad struggled in clutch situations. With that said, I did think he was looking better this season before the injury. I just really have a hard time believing he could still be the QB of the future on this team. Inside the red zone he completed 38% of his passes this season, 50% after half time, and 20% inside 2 minutes of half. Last year his overall stats were better in clutch situations.

Manning is the only thing that makes sense. Were not trading up to get a qb without giving up the house, and there is not a lot of talent after that. So we would be gambling on later picks. He would at least buy us a few years to gamble at the later picks, and we have a 4 time mvp playing in the meantime. They're not going to hire him until he's thoroughly evaluated by doctors. We wont be locked into a long deal. Its a win win. Flynn might be great, but if hes no good then we have an overpaid qb in a long deal.

New Coach Wanted wanted Rob Ryan?

Holy Hell!

What a freakin' loser.

L - O - S - E - R!!!

No, blockhead, I did not. I don't rely on experts... or bloggers... I simply state the facts and watch others take offense.

Henne threw for so many yards while being the worst in:

3rd down conversion

Posted by: BlockHead | January 25, 2012 at 08:10 PM

I know in this internet/soundbite age we live in, remembering two season ago is a big order.

Henne, along with Bess were tops in 3rd down conversions.

There's enough legitimate knocks on Henne, get em right!

.........to add to my previous post... if we sign manning, then we also have one of the greatest of all time to teach either

a. a draft pick
b.Henne
c.moore

mik,

You haven't fashioned an meritorious argument yet.

I think you should ask your mother.

Just what we need, another broken QB. Might as well give Culpepper a call.

No, blockhead, I did not. I don't rely on experts...

Posted by: New Coach Wanted | January 25, 2012 at 08:15 PM

Which means you rely on non-experts.

Good move L - O - S - E - R!!!

Just what we need, another broken QB. Might as well give Culpepper a call.

Posted by: FireJeffIreland | January 25, 2012 at 08:19 PM

Are you seriously comparing Culpepper to Manning???

No, blockhead, I did not. I don't rely on experts... or bloggers... I simply state the facts and watch others take offense.

Not true, your post below shows you thing bloggers are idiots for not paying attention to the espn hairdo blabbers.

They don't recognize every personnel man in the league disagrees with them; you would have to pay attention to realize that.

Posted by: New Coach Wanted | January 25, 2012 at 07:44 PM

Own up and be done with it.

Blockhead,

It is relative. Do I want Henne down 9 points in the 4th quarter in the playoffs?

Henne got me to the playoffs? My faith in him has increased.

What are my choices? Henne or... Rodgers? I take Rodgers. Brees? I take Brees. Matt Moore? I take Henne. Mark Sanchez? I take Henne. Alex Smith? I take Henne. Eli Manning? That would be difficult. Eli sucks 90% of the time but come the playoffs, the guy is something else.

Does that give you a reasonable understanding of my belief in Henne?

I can't belive that We just got a new hc and here We are commenting on chump henne remaining with Our team.I like so many others wanted him so succeed, badly. But after critical loses in the 2009 season,I from my couch could see that henne had a powerful arm but his accuracy and decision making were lacking.

In todays league, 4 years is plenty of time for a QB. Henne finished 2010 as horribly as any fin QB in history and in his 4th year started 0-3.

Any logical person would conclude not to resign such a player.

We draft a QB no matter what this year. If we can't get one of the elite, we'll draft one in the 2nd or 3rd. That will happen regardless of what happens with Flynn, Manning, or Henne. I am really starting to doubt Peyton plays again. Who thinks an open competition between Henne, Moore, and high round draft pick (RG3, Weeden, Tannehil, Foles) is possible?

Eli Manning? That would be difficult. Eli sucks 90% of the time but come the playoffs, the guy is something else.

Does that give you a reasonable understanding of my belief in Henne?

Posted by: New Coach Wanted | January 25, 2012 at 08:22 PM

Well now I know you are just a complete waste of time. Eli sucks? You let his aw shucks persona throw you off. Eli comes through in the clutch BIG TIME. He is light years ahead of Henne. Henne is a wilting daisy whenever you need him most. Eli plays lights out down the stretch. See his SB season, leading his team to the biggest upset in history, and check out his last several games this year.

Two SB's not bad.

Henne, nothing but doubt.

Dumb arg. Eli is a top 5 QB. Henne is a backup.

Results are proof.

Please! Please! Please! Forget Peyton Manning! Let's get a young gun that we can build on. Why go for Manning? Two maybe three years of satisfaction and success. IF WE'RE LUCKY. Then what?! Find another quarterback. Maybe Eli Manning will be available. He'll certainly be old enough to qualify for Dolphins then. Get Flynn, or pay the price for RG3. But get young and give the franchise a chance to have a winning team for several years to come. I remind you that quarterbacks that have had success in the league are guys like Brady, the Manning brothers, Romo, Rivers and the have all been with their teams a while with a chance of developing. Armando, STOP TELLING LIES ABOUT MANNING! If Ireland and Ross are truly smart, they would forget the ten minute fix with Manning and go for one of the young guns.

Man,

Did anyone take reading comprehension? Are my sentences too long for some of you?

Read my sentence again to understand the point. I didn't say one thing about the credibility of personnel men. I simply said they don't recognize every personnel man disagrees with them (here it is) they would have to pay attention to realize that.

Point: Seat of the pants analysis with no basis in reality.
